Portland House in Powys

We were on a long drive and picked Llandrindod as our lunch stop. Chose Portland for its proximity to our one-hour parking space. Windows looked like they needed a wipe and the lobby a bit tired but we hadn't long. HOWEVER! The interior was beautifully clean and cosy, and many tables already taken even though it was early for lunchtime, so it's obviously popular. Decent WC, too. We had lovely sandwiches. Very reasonable prices, quick service although clearly fresh food not ready made, and the staff are friendly. Please note, cash only (or was that day).

A clean, value for money bed and breakfast. Central Llandrindod with a nearby pub for good food. Lovely big cooked breakfast served in the tea room on ground floor. Accommodation not good for visitors with mobility issues (loads of stairs).

A few of us called by the other Saturday morning and ordered the large breakfast x4. Our orders were taken quickly and we sat down and got our drinks shortly after. Our breakfasts didn’t follow long after and as you can see from the photo, the bacon is thick cut and cooked exactly how I liked it. Some of the others couldn’t finish theirs but my plate was clean by the end! The staff are all friendly and helpful - the only possible negative is that they don’t take card payments, but there’s a cashpoint next door. Definitely recommended.

Lovely room decor in this Victorian building. Large space and comfortable easy chairs and beds. Good shower. Lovely breakfast and host, bonus doggie to pet!

We were passing through Llandrindod Wells and looking for a brunch stop. The Tea House absolutely hit the spot. Three of us selected the Small Breakfast, which were easily enough, and our son the Large. The staff dealt really well with my annoying dietary requirements! The café is a nice space and the staff are very welcoming.

The breakfast is fantastic!!! Hot .. good quality... bacon is thick cut ... definitely be back again for this fantastic value and great service!!

This is a great and very friendly cafe/restaurant tat we eat in regularly. Disabled/wheelchair accessable. Ladies are very helpful and will help with doors. Double swing doors plenty wide enough for a wider than normal chair . No steps. Food freshly made and so may be a short wait. Parking close by. Portland House is also a Gesthouse upstairs. We are locals so cannot review this but if the cleanliness and quality of the cafe is to go by I would highly recommend.

Friendly tea room, had a couple of snacks, everything was tasty. The place has an extensive menu. Good cup of coffe.

Called for an afternoon tea and coffee. A double espresso is not a single espresso watered down. Please note.

A very cosy tea rooms conveniently situated near to the town shopping area. The staff are friendly and the room is clean and an excellent place to chill out for a cuppa and cake, or anything else you fancy that is on offer. A public car park is just around the corner, over a bridge.

A pleasant stay in a very nice and clean hotel. Close to what we needed. We were at the back and it was very quiet.

Had lunch with a group of work colleagues. Staff were happy for us to move a table so that we were all sat together. They were quite busy as the Victorian Festival was on and the waitress did warn us there may be a wait, but nothing longer than we would have expected. The All Day Breakfast is good value which includes a tea or coffee and the staff were happy to swap one item for another. The paninis were also good as were the salads.

It is a bed and breakfast with spacious rooms and a comunal lounge with a free pool table. The main pro is that it doesn't have a lift. There is also a nice cafe downstairs.

Great food available, especially the All Day Breakast, geat value for money. Good coffee. Clean & Tidy surroundings, pleasant staff

This used to be the old bank building and is very grand to look at from the outside. Stopped here a few times for a bite and a coffee. Always good service and nicely presented food. Outside space at front OK if you do not mind the traffic flowing by but I prefer inside myself. All in all very good experience. Would always pop in if peckish or thirsty.

I was in town on a visit and needed a cup of tea and some lunch. What a treat to find this delightful place. I ordered the ham and cheese panini with a pot of tea. It was delicious. I can't say anymore than that, just beautiful, very filling. I wanted a cake for dessert, but I'm afraid the panini with the chips were just too filling leaving no room for dessert. Excellent service, very nice staff and a great experience. If I'm ever in this town again and need refreshment, this will be my first port of call without a doubt.

The Portland staff are always welcoming and as most of their customers are local, it has the lovely feel of a community cafe. The prices are very reasonable and the service is prompt. There is a separate lounge area which gives a more relaxed experience if people prefer this to tables and chairs.

Excellent all day breakfast. Lovely friendly atmosphere. Food was served promptly and politely ! Quality was very good.

Soy un profesional que trabaja en y alrededor de la zona - Hoy fui a este Càfe que trabajar fuera de lo normal en lugar de trabajo y para conseguir un poco de paz y tranquilidad. Hice la decisión consciente de ir a una cafetería local independiente para apoyar negocios locales, en lugar de las tiendas de la empresa de café. Compré varios café y estaba en la cafetería durante algún tiempo ofreciendo negocios. He tenido un personal sumamente desagradable que no reconocen en absoluto si me dijo gracias o pedir más café, simplemente se procedió a completar la orden mientras me ignoraba. Nada de esto me pareció hasta aproximadamente las 15:55 cuando un miembro del personal me dijo: "disculpe señora estamos cerrando en 5 minutos, así que tienes que pagar". Esto obviamente fue sin problemas y fui a pagar de inmediato, entonces fui a preparar todas y dejar mi trabajo. Cuando me fui a otro miembro del personal dijo que había pagado a gritos"! ? '. Obviamente me dijeron que sí. . Otras dijo 'en realidad señora puedo tener una palabra. . En el futuro. Por favor no sentarse aquí por mucho tiempo y continúe para trabajar". Me sorprendió esta actitud como pensé este negocio independiente estaría encantada de cualquier comercio. Nunca me he sentido tan distante y creo que esta actitud es horrible. A cualquiera que esté pensando en utilizar esta cafetería no me molestaría.

Not a brilliant ambiance but certainly OK for this type of straight-forward, good value, good food. Served by pleasant enough, young, local kids.

Wanted something for lunch and found this place. Excellent food, reasonably priced and very good value for money. Staff excellent. Superb find.

we called in here whilst shopping in llandrindod on wed its our favourite place to eat in the town .i had a baguette with prawns in seafood sauce and my partner had a small breakfast .my baguette came with coleslaw and crisps and a salad garnish i opted not to have the salad ,the baguette was deliscious and the coleslaw was really nice really creamy and there was plenty of it ,service in the portland house is always so good the staff are always very pleasant and the restaurant is so clean ,we have never found portland house empty when we have visited which is a good sign and yesterday there was a steady stream of people coming in we called just before lunch time .I had a capuccino coffee which had a lovely layer of chocolate on it the waitress did ask me if i would like chocolate on it and she put a really nice amount on it ,my partner had a glass of milk and this was a reasonable size too this restaurant is such good value for money .

lovely little break here - the most friendly and pleasant owners you could meet, it really was lovely to be made so welcome by the family who run this very nice B & B, Ruth and Ross and Ruths mum, who is a delight, good humoured and so pleasant. I could not recommend it more highly if you are visiting Llandrindod Wells - it is very central being at the top of the high street and opposite the entrance to the beautiful Rock Park & Spa but quiet, with a terrific homecooked breakfast using good quality ingredients served really promptly by friendly people and a large and airy pleasant en suite room - what more can you ask? Will definitely visit them again!

As we’re local, my wife and I visit Portland House often. Our most recent visit was par for the course.I was feeling peckish so I opted for the two sausages, two eggs and chips; my wife had the Coronation Chicken Jacket Potato. She always says the Coronation Chicken here is the best ever. My meal was excellent as usual.I have read some petty reviews of this restaurant which have grumbled that the carpet is filthy. I wouldn’t disagree, but do you eat off the carpet? Bear in mind Portland House is busy so the consequent high level of footfall would make any carpet filthy! Also I would point out that the restaurant has a five-star hygiene rating.We shall eat here regularly as usual. Good place, we recommend it.

Came here for lunch with friends greeted by friendly waitress, there was a good choice of food on the menu all at very reasonable prices, our curry was very nice as were the chips and omelette. Visited during Victorian week and locals were in the cafe dressed in costume would recommend.Tea came in pots.

Very enjoyable meal, I had an omelette that was one of the best I have eaten. Great staff that give you a warm welcome, thank you.

We'll never been before despite family and many visits to Llandrindod..Service was poorFood was poor - only good thing was they served fentimans drinks, bar that it was an alround poor experience... Never mind trying out the B&B that they had there..

We love this cafe we always find it so clean ,the staff are so nice and friendly and the food is always perfect today we had the small breakfasts which were really nice the bacon was delicious nice and thick and the portion sizes of the breakfasts were really good and the presentation was wonderful as usual ,the place is always so clean and the staff are always very attentive and keep the tables clean ready for the next customers,shortly after we had been here we went up to the lake side restaurant and what a difference in the two places ,portland house should be proud of themselves as there overall service is fantastic i know previous reviewers have mentioned the carpets in portland house well they need to see the state of the tables and chairs at the lakeside restaurant they hadn't been wiped or cleared even those that had been cleared still had crumbs on them and spillage marks .

I found Portland House on the internet, but could not have found anywhere more comfortable or welcoming. I had a good size, light and airy room with splendid bed, en-suite bathroom, all spotlessly clean and a full English breakfast which set me up for the day, and all for a most reasonable cost. The House is Grade 2 listed but has been very sympathetically renovated to the highest standards by Ruth and her Husband and if I need to stay anywhere near this part of Wales again I shall not hesitate to return to Portland House.

Being a local I love the Portland and it is very much a favoured choice to eat out for us in Llandrindod. My advice to anyone is seek out the places where the locals eat. Many of us eat here. Large menu, generous portions and homely cooking to hotel standards. All the waitress staff are mature and pleasant. The summer sees an occasional well trained youngster on the waiting staff but everyone is without exception very pleasant and helpful. They always help or offer to help my husband with my wheelchair by holding their swing doors even though we entirely have the knack now. The tables are large enough to slip my legs under and remain in the wheelchair - not always the case! There is a slight wait for hot food because nothing is microwaved and all is freshly cooked on order but the tea / coffee is rapidly at your table. There is a wide selection of cakes. Paul and I love their collection of teapots and the locally painted art (which is for sale) on their walls. Never a boring wait. THANKS PORTLAND HOUSE!

A visit to Llandrindod is not right without a visit to Portland house we really like this place this time we had the small breakfast it was plentiful ,nicely cooked and hot and great service ,I don,t understand why previous reviews have made comments about the carpets you don,t eat off the carpets and food isn't put on the floor what do people expect when people are coming in off the street in all weathers and with all sorts of foot wear .The tables in Portland house are clean and so are the counters etc i have been in many places where the flooring is worn looking and depending on the design or colour you may not be able to see if the floor is dirty unfortunately for Portland house the carpet colour shows marks but this does not put people off, every time we have visited it has always been busy and we will visit here again .

We dropped into Portland House on a "busy" Saturday... (it was very quiet in the town as Wales were playing England at Twickenham!). Upon arrival, we walked into the foyer and were greeted by 3 local senior ladies who were delightful and extremely friendly, as they left after enjoying their meals!We seated ourselves (myself, my beautiful wife and 2 of our daughters) at a favourable looking table and were warmly welcomed by a staff member - we had quite a chat and ordered afternoon tea for two and a cup of tea and a hot chocolate. The food was of exceptional quality as was the atmosphere (the portions were very generous!!!).We had a lovely afternoon in Llandrindod Wells and would strongly recommend Portland House to anyone.Thank you Portland House!

We called here again a week ago and again we were not disappointed my partner called here again whilst we were in the area my partner had the BIG all day breakfast and i had the quiche both very enjoyable ,staff were very friendly and service was great ,It is great value for money with plenty of choice on the menu .

We were returning from North Wales to Swansea and needed a quick refreshment stop. We were lucky enough to find Portland House in Llandrindod. The jacket potatoes we had were great and very fairly priced. Coffee and cakes wre also good. It's a relaxed place to visit with free wi-fi. if we lived closer I'm sure we'd be regulars here! We noticed they do rooms too and pets are welcome - so we may be stopping for longer in the future - thanks!

Often visit for coffee and a cake, on occasion have also purchased savory food and been very satisfied. Venue is always very tidy and presentable. Staff are helpful and friendly.

Had to ask for second slice of bread on sandwich to be buttered, was told they only butter one piece of bread in a sandwich!!!! Never known this to happen before in any other café!!!!!

Menu here is good. Food prepared to order so there is a short wait which isn't a problem as there are lots of things on the walls to look at.Had a slice of delicious home made cheese and onion quiche with coleslaw and a side salad and, at £4.95, felt it was a bargain. Saw many other delights being taken to customers, sandwiches looked very good, jacket potatoes etc. Chip portions seem to be on the huge side so if you aren't a bit eater, share a portion. Lovely young waitress served us with a pleasant smile. The only down side is perhaps that the teabags they use are not very strong so if you prefer strong tea, might need to ask for an extra bag.

Very enjoyable lunch time menu , friendly pleasant staff and nice food. Portland offers a wide range of homemade cakes so if you fancy a pot of tea and something sweet - this is the place for you

we chanced upon these tea rooms set in the former home of Barclays Bank. Lovely retro feel. Extensive menu and very competitively priced. Very friendly staff.

Tried in June 2015, food very good, chips, jacket potato, leek and potato soup. Really, it's about time the carpet was changed. It's bad enough in the restaurant but on the way to the toilet it's positively disgusting. We saw a few people walk in and straight out when we were there and I would expect that to be after looking at that carpet. It is way beyond cleaning.

Lovely traditional tea rooms. The large menu covers everything from breakfast thorough morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. Delicious homemade cakes. Friendly and attentive service. Parking is reasonably close and disabled access is good.

I recommend the lattes and the Lemon Meringue Pie is Lush.. Some people actually reserve there slice of it.

Me and my girlfriend had been walking around Llandrindod for some time looking for a place that offered a decent afternoon tea (and which actually stayed open into the afternoon) and had all but given up when we saw this place. The best thing about it was the value, £14 for two. We're often used to paying that each when we go somewhere in England, and it was good food as well.

Portland House is one of the more modern places to eat in Llandrindod Wells. Their is an extensive menu choice all reasonably priced and the portion sizes are more than adequate. A chill counter provides a lovely selection of cream cakes etc. There is a more relaxing area at the rear of the cafe with comfortable leather sofas, for meeting up with friends. Upstairs is a B & B but cannot comment on this as I have not stayed there.

Small family run bed and breakfast with very helpful and friendly owners. Rooms well appointed and very clean, superb breakfasts and reasonably priced. Highly recommended and would stay there again. Also a teashop/café on the ground floor.

Portland House is another good eaterie in Llandrindod. The meals are substantial and good value. There is a huge selection of cakes. Lovely coffee even though it is out of an automatic machine. Great place for a no nonsense meal or meeting with friends.

Ive been here a few times and on each occasion the staff have been rather moody have had food and the hot chocolate is fab and the tea cakes are nice to even had a burger and chips the chips was lovely but burger wasnt my taste but is a nice place

coffee was ok, but i had the nicest bit of cake i think i have ever had, was a white chocolate thing, was perfect. was very cheap too and seemed a nice and added place, free WiFi is an added bonus especialy when i had not had any phone signal all week

Myself and three friends visited the Portland today. They had nearly finished their meals whilst mine had not been delivered. I asked if my meal had been forgotten? The waitress apologised and offered to prepare my meal, as I was on a tight schedule this was not possible. I was then offered a sandwich to take away. I chose a baguette which was duly delivered. The price to eat in was £4.75 which included crisps, garnish and coleslaw. I was charged £4:50 just for the baguette to take away, no garnish, no crisps and no coleslaw. Helen Thomas Treorchy.

A beautfiully clean and relaxing cafe with the most amazing breakfast served by very friendly staff. The walls were adorned with lovely paintings of two local artists.

Seem to have made a visit here a regular event... Because we want to. The bacon in their cooked breakfast is consistently good.Drool over the cakes at the counter while you're paying and wonder if you could possibly make room for one?

Second time we have been back to the Portland house Tea room and B&B.Perfect service, Coffee was stunning and food lush.It is the most relaxing and comfortable atmosphere.Next time we go back to Llandrindod Wells, were booking into the B&B above the Tearoom.Lovely old stone building; right in the heart of the little town.

I had an all day breakfast and the wife a jacket potato. The portions were good and the jacket potato was fine, however, the all day breakfast was disappointing; sausage was of poor quality, the mushrooms were plentiful but bland, the tomatoes were tinned and the juice from these soaked into the toast making it soggy. The hot drinks were good and reasonably priced. Plenty of people coming and going so must have a good local reputation.

Went here with a friend for lunch. We both had a sandwich which came with salad, coleslaw and crisps which was very reasonably priced. This is a "roomy" place to eat and caters for people like my friend and I who met up for a chat, or families with children. Downside is the toilet area which certainly needs a revamp although it was clean and well stocked.

A little biased I suppose since I visit at least once a week !Always a good selection of fresh cakes and pastries, and a full and varied menu as well with daily specials.Recommend without hesitation !

We've visited Portland House twice, it's such a lovely little cafe which offers really well prepared food at very reasonable prices.As I have a thing about food and hygiene I love it when I walk into a place and it looks clean. The tables are cleared as soon as vacated and the staff are very much on the ball. Your food arrives piping hot and not luke warm as in some places.This will now be our eatery when visiting the town.!!!!
