Lovely hotel lovely people Comfy beds Warm rooms Clean Super helpful cheerful receptionist and all the staff we came across were kind helpful and friendly. The breakfast was continental and perfectly suited for what we required. Fresh juice, fruit, croissants, toast, jams filter coffee. Cooked breakfast some days but they were very clear which days before booking. Very sadly the chef died whilst we were there are there was one day no cooked breakfast but they did let us know and they did their best even though the chefs passing was a shock to them all. It's obvious they all work as a team and staff stay as they enjoy each others company. It felt like a family reception helped us to stay in the same room when we needed to stay longer at short notice. Any issues they would quickly resolve if asked. They provided extra towels and biscuits for my son. It's not luxurious in terms of decor but I'd rather stay here than the previous one which looked better but wasn't as homely, comfortable or as friendly. We will definitely stay again. Thank you for your warm welcome Becky and David xxx

Stayed here a number of times the years - and had always been our first choice for food and a hotel stay in Newtown. The restaurant meals and breakfast were always amazing and the staff lovely and friendly. I would never stay or eat here again, which pains me to say. Staff brusque and unwelcoming. We stayed at the front of the hotel - opposite a night club. Very noisey. The room was sub standard and a throw back to the ‘70s. The furniture is mismatched and basic. Very cramped. The TV was in Japanese. We got help - there is no terrestrial TV - just I-player and lots of Japanese channels. The TV was propped up in a wierd shelf practically on the ceiling. However, it was all clean. There was no food available in the hotel/pub. Seemed rather odd but after our breakfast experience the next day, was probably for the best. Breakfast was APPALLING! No glasses, no butter, no fruit juices, no cutlery. When these items were requested a very disinterested waitress gave no apology, and eventually managed after quite some time to respond to what seemed like reasonable and polite requests but she certainly had a bit of an attitude and zero customer care skills. You can only have one set breakfast served to you on a plate- you can not deviate from it under any circumstances even to take an item away! Seemed like a waste of food to me and the waitress seemed horrified that we were wanting to buck her system! The food was poor quality. Nobody finished it on our table or anyone else’s. We left the hotel and went into the town to get some food to eat. The breakfast room had an unpleasant atmosphere - probably set by the one disinterested waitress who seemed to want to be anywhere but there. We picked up the vibe and felt the same to be honest. Such a shame as this was a lovely hotel and pub in all the other times that we stayed there.

We arrived in Newtown mid morning on the 16th June. After viewing the river a local young lady with her grandson recommended we go in to the Elephant and Castle to have a drink and lunch. I walk with a mobility aid, a rollator and have an assistance dog who detects the level of my blood sugar on a constant basis. After finding that the beer garden was unaccessible to disabled people with mobility aids, We attempted to enter the front door to the lounge bar. On the second attempt, I went to the bar using my rollator to move, showed my assistance dog ID to the female bar staff member. She read the ID, Which clearly states that it is a right under the Equality Act of 2010 that we are not be refused access or entrance under this act. Full access required by law. The female bar staff did not understand this clearly stated legal right so I asked for the manager. I again explained to him why I needed access with my assistance dog. He tossed my ID card back at me across the bar. At my further insistence he turned his back and walked off muttering I will see about this. He didn't return. He was medium build, ruddy faced and bearded. I eventually left and sought a meal and drinks elsewhere for four of us. I will be contacting the relevant commission to report this obstruction of access.

Arrived for an overnight stay. Firstly the lift was broken which wasn't the end of the world. Staff were friendly. Room was dated with a couple of broken floor boards you could feel through the carpet and wall paper hanging off the ceiling. The TV didn't have any normal channels I.e. BBC or ITV. I had to link my amazon account to watch anything. Bed was comfortable and clean and a nice view of the river. Breakfast was served. And all of it was cold. Probably because the plate was also cold. Not the worst place I've been in but wouldn't come back.

The Chef is an absolute legend what a menu the flavours were immense, I left the restaurant and had a few drinks in the bar where everyone else was saying the same about their roast beef/lamb dinners. There's not a lot happening in in this old market town however if you find yourselves here and looking for somewhere to eat then try the Elephant and Castle it's a breath of fresh air

We were celebrating a birthday so decided to go out for a nice meal. The restaurant itself is very nice and welcoming, the staff were also friendly. The food we had we enjoyed, however slightly disappointingly it seemed half the menu wasn't available (around half our party had to order something else). The one thing that particularly disappointed me was the steamed sponge I had was quite clearly reheated in the microwave causing it to become very tough and chewy to eat. I would have expected a little better for the price we paid. I would come back to eat here again because we have been before and had a good experience leading me think this may have been a one off. Despite the few problems we overall had an enjoyable time and the food we did have was nice.

Went for Sunday lunch with my family. We had been there before with friends and the meal was great, succulent roast beef and all the trimmings were excellent. The view is really nice if you get a table facing the river. However, when I went with 2 family members who are vegan and gluten free, it was a bit difficult to get meals they wanted with very little to choose from, even tho one had called the chef earlier in the day to go over options and settle on a dish. It was just so so for her, but the rest of us had to keep waiting for bits and pieces of our orders, rather than everything coming at once. What really spoiled it was the overly campy waiter who we thought fancied himself as a comedian, we were not THAT amused when he kind of pushed our patience with his shtick. He was very nice and polite, I won't deny that, but it got to be too much after a while.I was happy with my food but the others at the table were not as they are strict vegans and it's insulting to get undercooked broccoli and cauliflower. I mean COOK it a bit more, for pete's sake. Desserts were yummy, I can't complain about that, and I would go there again for Sunday lunch, I guess it's hard to please fussy eaters...but we didn't need the constant irritating 'floor show'.

We had a good welcome on arrival, with champagne or orange juice, the barman managed to find me a glass of apple juice. We had canapes in the bar, which were really good and very welcome as we were all pretty hungry. We went through to our table, which was on the upper floor at the back of the restaurant, which had a double aspect view. We soon had our starters, soup, chicken roulade, salmon and filo basket, all were delicious. We had a wait til our mains,we didn't mind at all. Our mains arrived, roast turkey, rump of lamb and lemon sole. The lemon sole was a real disappointment and was the tiniest portion around. Everyone else enjoyed their mains and because there was so much we were able to find some extra turkey. The veg were lovely, fantastically ungreasy roast potatoes and roast veg as well as leeks in a sauuce and sprouts and new potatoes. We had rather a long wait for our desserts,we noticed the waitress did not stop and there weren't enough of them. When are desserts arrived ,they were good, however,we could have done with more brandy sauce, the croque en bouche were lovely, but the cheesesbiard didn't have any blue cheese on it. We waited for a long time for coffee,we mentioned it to the waitresses, after 45 minutes,er gave up ,paid for our drinks and went home. We were disappointed as this was uincluded in the price. All in all we had a lovely meal out. But,the service needed more staff. The staff that were on,did a great job, were all efficient and friendly.

Have eaten here many times and normally VG. However, 2 of us went Easter Monday (2017) in the bar at lunchtime and noticed menu is new. Anyway we both had the Lasagne with Garlic Bread and Salad which we have had on previous visits and it was £10.95 each. When it came it was less than half the size of the previous ones we have had here and came with one small piece of garlic bread. At £10.95 each this is very much overpriced and would consider it a very light snack and whilst the quality of the Lasagne was good we both left still hungry as it was simply not much more than a starter portion size. I voiced my concern at this change when I paid the bill and got the impression from the staff many people have commented on this change and not been happy. The fact previous Easter Mondays we have been there it has been full and at 12.45 on this day there were only 6 of us eating perhaps tells us a story compared to previous years. Next time we will go elsewhere.

The main courses came,Roast Turkey and rack of Lamb were our choices, although there wer plenty more to choose from. The table was really nicely presented, good space around the table and no one knocking elbows with each other. The waiting and bar staff were welcoming and helpful. The starters offered a wide choice and catered for different tastes and flavours, nobody was disappointed and the portions were very good. We had a light, refreshing sorbet which was delightful. The majority of the party had turkey and thought it was excellent. 2 of the party had lamb rack which was superbly cooked (medium rare). There was a choice of 5 vegetables which were all really nicely cooked. The desserts offered the choice of traditional to more contemporary and catered for all. The Christmas pudding was so light. We had coffee and mince pies included in the price. We felt relaxed and the staff were attentive. We had the table for the afternoon and didn't feel rushed at all. Went there for staff Christmas party, it was such a disappointment, we had to choose what we wanted to eat, when we booked in October, as well as paying £10 deposit then. My starter vegetable spring roll was fine, some people ordered Ham hock, it was not what any of them thought it should be it was like, it was a small round of lumpy pate, For main course some of us had roast beef, and some had turkey, you could only have roast potatoes with the turkey, not with the beef, the beef was served on top of mashed potatoes, with tasteless stuffing on the side there was no Yorkshire pudding, when we asked which gravy belonged to the beef and which one for the turkey, the waitress went to ask the chef, we were told it's just one gravy for both dishes. The sprouts were greys and mush, all the vegetables were over cooked. When we got to dessert, 4 people ordered cheesecake, when they tasted it they all said this is off, it wasn't just off it was rancid, we called the manager who took it away, came back and said the chef says it Bailys, all protested it was off, reluctantly they were given an alternative dessert. The cost for three courses (no mince pies or coffee included) was £21:50, we had to reminder the manager we had already paid £10:00 when we booked. Very disappointed with the whole experience.

After reserving my table, on arrival we were first moved in to the bar area, as someone else had just sat at our table. We were then moved back to our original table, with an apology, which was gratefully accepted. The staff were clearly extremely busy, and a mix up was certainly forgivable, given their circumstances. I was however quite shocked to see only one member of staff on the bar, and only one waitress to serve a very busy lunch time period. This, in turn led to quite a few errors, and ultimately the worst meal, and service that I have ever had here.My pint of coke was served in a dirty glass, which in turn made it as flat as water. My Mother also said that her pot of tea was luke warm, so not a great start.I ordered Ham, egg and hand cut chips, and my Mother ordered Jacket Potato, Cheese and Coleslaw. We also ordered our puddings in advance. On arrival, my Ham looked grey, and although smelling okay, was quite tasteless, and my chips were mostly raw. I sent my meal back, explaining the problems, and had no problem in waiting for a replacement. When my replacement arrived, the chips were still mostly raw, and it was evidently clear that they had just been thrown back in to the fryer, and flash fried again to be re presented to me. The only thing that was brought back fresh was the egg! My Mothers Jacket Potato was cooked, but not hot, which surprised me, as it had clearly been microwaved to melt the cheese. I told the waitress that my food had again come out raw, and that I wished to cancel our puddings and just leave. I was only charged for my Mothers meal, and the drinks, but sadly, that will be the last money this establishment will have from me. I left a tip, which I hope went directly to the waitress, as that poor girl was trying so very hard to carry a very much sinking ship, and taking all of the flack for pretty much nothing being good enough.

Smartly refurbished since the last time I was there, this proved an excellent choice for lunch. The service was efficient, polite and helpful. The food was freshly cooked, the plate just large enough to carry the absolutely excellent fish and chips. The chips were hand cut, and both these and the fish were cooked to delicious perfection. The portions were VERY generous, so don't expect to be playing squash straight afterwards!

Went for an evening meal with Friends. The meal was awful. Waited so long for it to be served, was on the cool side, one member sent hers back to be warmed up, they then returned it without her fork. One sent her pudding back, it was presented very badly. Long wait between courses and it wasn't even busy. Delivered puddings then had to go and get the spoons. Went a few years ago for Christmas dinner, wasn't impressed then and didn't return for a long time. Still not impressed. Don't think I will ever return

On this occasion i was staying at the Elephant and Castle as my wife had to go to Goa (India) on family business. I was given Room 101 for Three nights and what a lovely room it was i couldn't fault it at all the bed was better than the one i have at home and that is good ! The en suite bathroom was big and wonderfully clean the shower temperature was just how i liked it.Getting between the rooms and the riverside restaurant for breakfast is quite an adventure just follow the signs and you won't get lost !! The breakfast choices are good and for the main breakfast you have a two hot choices and a continental option. The view whilst you are eating breakfast is just wonderful with the River Severn just outside and the view of the opposite bankOn the Saturday evening both myself and the Elephant and Castle were having problems, mine were quickly resolved but the Elephant's cost them time - money and lost business due to a major power failure in the kitchen, My parents and i were due to have our "Christmas Dinner" in the restaurant but had to go instead to The Black boy further down Broad Street, and because my room was right where the electrical company needed to be to drill to find the cable i had a semi disturbed night but without any question at all i was not charged for the first night even though i would have paid as i knew this was not the hotel's fault. Louise (Ian the owner's daughter) could not have been more apologetic she is a great front of house manager. All the staff at the Elephant & Castle are extremely friendly and helpful, and when the other half returns we hope to be staying again in January 2017. Thanks for a great stay on this occasion !! - Car Parking is a little tight but arrive early and you will be okay.

I have stayed here on a number of occasions and this busy hotel in an excellent location for those staying in Newtown as very central and in a scenic spot by the river. The rooms are generally clean and tidy with excellent bathrooms, you can upgrade to riverside rooms which are lovely but expensive. The bothy rooms are very basic with no wifi and no sound insulation and to be avoided unless on a tight budget. The breakfasts is the best meal with an option for continental and a packed lunch, cooked breakfast is also good.Parking is a little haphazard as the car park is unmarked and once the round table get in youre knackered!!Evening meals are atrocious . found one i liked after a few attempts,a mushroom risotto only to have it made with no mushrooms - There is talk of a new chef??Service is ok staff are generally helpful ,young and quite inexperienced. They have messed up my bookings previously ,so i had to move mid stay to the Bothy rooms which are best avoided unless you enjoy listening to the nocturnal noises of a travelling truck driver next door. No apology given even after they mislaid my bags. This could be a really good hotel if they sorted out the dining standards

I recently went to this hotel for a meal with some old school friends, there were 4 of us in total..I started off badly when the bar staff couldn't find the menus, then we waited ages for our orders to be taken.2 of the 4 meals were sent back.We were not impressed at all, I certainly wouldn't consider returning. The only plus point to the whole visit was the poor waitress, she was very apologetic and did everything she could to help sort things out, I'm sure her name was Freya..Well done to her... Not much to say about the others.. Sorry.

We went in for Sunday lunch as it is very near the house we are staying in and looked decent on review sites. When I walked in it all looked very modern and a little too like a hotel and I thought "I won't get a decent pint in here", Wrong! I had a superb pint of local pale ale. The food was very good and a reasonable price based on how many courses you have. The meat was plentiful and the veg cooked very nicely and were fresh. The lady in charge was very helpful and good with the kids, and although the other staff were teenagers they were all good and helpful. My only slight improvement would be the children's offering. The main meal was great and excellent value if you have older children. Mine are 7 and 10 year old girls so starters and sweets at adult prices is too much. If there were half price versions of the starters and sweets this would be great, even just a cheaper ice cream offering for desert. I will be back later this week, even if just fr a beer!

I am a seasoned traveller but have to rate my room at The Elephant and Castle as the worst ever. Both myself and friends were attracted to the Hotel by the wonderful pictures of the River Severn running past and the description of the Riverside Suites. Although we booked well in advance we were not aware that we were allocated rooms in the old part of the hotel, opposite a night club and late night bar. These are NOT fit for occupation when the club and bar are open and we were not warned that there was a problem. People using the facilities opposite seemed to spend much of their time in the road, shouting, swearing and driving up and down. Clearly public order offences were being committed and whilst there was a police presence no attempt was made by them or the club's security staff to control the situation which I understand was typical of a week-end night. The noise finally stopped at around 4 am. Sadly, this experience has now changed my view of Newtown as the authorities clearly have no control over the town centre. I would also add that there were two single beds in my room and the mattress on one was very badly stained. There was no mattress saver fitted so the filthy condition of the bed could be seen by the house-keeping staff every time the sheets were changed.

Stayed here for one night - we were upgraded to room in new part of hotel. My partner has stayed here before and said the upgraded room was worth it. The receptionist who was on when we arrived, at the end of our evening meal and in the morning when we left was fantastic - cheerful, helpful and a really good advocate for the hotel. The breakfast, although basic was superb (of 3 hotels in 3 days definitely the best breakfast). We did have an even8ng meal - the food waa lovely but the service hit and miss - a number of youngbinexperienced staff were in duty, they were very friendly and helpful but needed guidance. All in all a pleasant experience and ine which I hope we can repeat in tge not too distant future.

I stayed several times recently with some work colleagues, like most things in life you get what you pay for. Main hotel rooms are very nice, but the ones to the front can be a bit noisy. The river view ones are the best and you will not find fault unless you are the type of person who likes looking for things to moan about. Bed is first rate . They also have some rooms in a separate block called the Bothy rooms , these are not refurbished but clean comfortable and very reasonably priced . These rooms I think are better than the road facing rooms as they are quiet and a bit cooler.Breakfast is good , as is the food in the restaurant , having tried most eating places in Newton I would rate this as the best. Oh and it will not break the bank at 12-15 pounds for a main.

Stayed here for one night and although it had taken us two hours to drive here seriously thought about turning around and going straight home. Very unwelcoming at reception on check in, area tired, needing upgrade and for someone to water the thirsty plants. Got to our twin room and nearly passed out with the heat. Rang reception who then organised another room for us which was a little cooler. All of this took ages. Had dinner in the bar. Starter of fishcake with poached egg and hollandaise was average. Egg yolk hard and hollandaise was from a jar and served cold. However, it was edible. Main courses arrived, my sister had ordered beer battered haddock and chips. I commented on how well cooked it looked to the waitress i.e. Batter was burnt! No response. Batter was inedible, fish inside shrivelled up and dry. Chips were a disgrace, it was clear that the oil in the fryer had not been changed in months! My dish of griddled chicken with a risotto of chorizo and tomato was gross. It was a congealed mess in the bowl and frankly looked as though it had been thrown up. It had a thick skin formed on it and looked like custard! Sent it back and they returned with a fresh one, frankly inedible . In the end ordered the cheese board as I was starving . That was very nice and presented nicely also, however there is not much you can mess up by putting some cheese, fruit and biscuits on a plate. Drinks from the bar were fine and there was a nice choice of wine. When we complained about the food it was dealt with appropriately by the staff to their credit. The place appears to be run by teenagers front of house and they cannot be held responsible for the quality of the cooking. Room was basic but clean but no hot water from the shower this morning. Pillows were dreadful. Breakfast was described as cooked to order but came in less than ten minutes, sausages need at least twenty minutes to cook and it was obvious that stuff had been precooked and sat under lights or zapped in a microwave. Will not visit again.

Our welcome was a let-down and I felt I was an inconvenience, but I think this was more inexperience than rude and he seemed a nice enough lad.Evening food in the pub/restaurant was excellent. Staff I talked to were all in their early 20's - they lacked some experience but were friendly enough once we chatted. I had a small room, but my colleagues got lovely large ones so worth asking if its important; having said that my room was perfectly adequate for the one night stay and had a lovely large corner bath. Suites have a view of the river - which I got in the morning for Breakfast, which again was excellent! All in all, a great little place to stay in a beautiful little town and I'd stay again

This was my second stay in the hotel. I highly recommend paying a little more for the theme named rooms - they afford amazing views over the river Severn. They are worth the extra money and this is the main reason for staying here.I had dinner in the bar and the staff were really friendly and there was a good range of pub grub to choose from. The bed was comfortable and the wifi was okay - a bit intermittent at times but I did manage to watch some Netflix. My only complaint (and it is minor) is about breakfast - I was rushed to make my choice as soon as I arrived in the breakfast area and it doesn't offer waitress service which I would expect for a hotel charging £100+ per night. Service could be a little better in the breakfast room.

Nice, clean, bright, modern decor. Visited on a weekday lunchtime. Pleasant barman asked us to take a seat (anywhere, as the tables were ALL empty). Brought our drinks and menus - (quite a limited choice if you want just a reasonably priced bar meal). We ordered a fish and hand-cut chips and a chicken curry. It took at least half an hour for the food to arrive. When it did the curry portion was meagre and the chips were brown and greasy. Total cost of said meals and three drinks (pints) was over £25.00! The only reason we visited this pub was because Wetherspoons next door was fully occupied by people enjoying their value for money menu and drinks. We won't be dining in the Elephant and Castle again unless they change things to encourage us away from The Black Boy. Similar cost of said meals there, with two drinks yesterday was £12.99 and the chips were great!!

Went here for a quiet meal. Food was good and the price ok (but they do seem to be creeping up). The staff were friendly and helpful . Picked the wrong night really as we went in, what was called the restaurant. If it was a restaurant then why did it have big screen TV on the walls with rugby on. It ended up being an overflow for the bar. And you couldn't move and the staff had to fight there way to the tables. Which really spoilt the evening. I have also been here before and there was football on that occasion. It's a real shame as they have an excellent restaurant over looking the river which never seems to be open. So if you want good food and a quiet night just make sure there are no sporting events on otherwise you maybe disappointed.
