We only ate at the restaurant and although it was the end of the season, the standard of the food should not drop. The steak dish was bland & cold. The burger was acceptable. Maybe the choices on a full menu might be better

Yhe location was good and easy to find. The room was musky and dusty. When moved to another room it also was musky and dusty, Cobwebs in the windows and dirty inside along with other things. It was cleaner than the first one. When confronted about they said they had scrubbed the hole room. Was offered a deluxe room with 4 poster bed etc but there would be additional charge to upgade. Cooked breakfast wasn't included in the price, the continental breakfast was poor as well. Not as expected for the price.

Would not return. Ordered a gin and tonic and was told they had run out of ice and lemon. Not a great start. Ordered the chicken curry which was completely inedible due to being the spiciest thing I have ever eaten. Other guests I was with tried it and agreed. Another friend had also ordered this and had tears streaming down her face. When we passed this on to the staff, instead of being understanding we were told the chefs didn’t think it was spicy at all. The chefs started shouting at us. And when we got to speak to the manager, she came over and was very unhelpful told us ‘the kitchen can’t win’. Abysmal customer service and were told we could have £5 off the chicken curry with no apology.

AVOID!!! Went for a meal in a group of nine. Two meals were curries. When these arrived they were inedible because they were too spicy. A few others tried and agreed. When the bill arrived I explained I wasn’t comfortable paying full price for them. Manager not in so spoke to the chef. He was immediately aggressive, intimidating and shouted at me and across the bar area, bringing other members of staff over to intimidate me. He then shut the door in my face. Spoke to the manager (who had returned to the restaurant) and her response was “the kitchen can’t win because people ask for hot curries then say it’s too hot.” Got £5 out of £15 off the curries and no apology. Poor food, terrible customer service, horrible staff. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

When I stayed at the Portland the new owners had only reopened it two weeks before. Despite the obvious amount of work that entailed, they were very attentive, accommodating and cheerful. I got a couple of tours of the old hotel, which retains much of its beautiful architectural detailing from a century (or more?) ago as well as lovely period furniture. My room had been fully updated and was very comfortable and private, although there was a slight musty smell, which I expect will just take a little time to disperse. The breakfast was generous and fresh and Caroline was a delight to talk to. The new owners seem so excited to be bringing the whole hotel up to date and I think it's a very worthy undertaking because the result will be fabulous. I hope I have a chance to stay there again and see The Portland in her new glory.

If you want a night with the locals, and a few odd extras, the pub at the Portland is the place. When we got there a few larrikins in the corner made sure we got to try a selection of whiskeys, only doubles thank you very much. They were poured with a tale of how to truly experience them - think open fires, snow falling outside, the Dalwhinney slowly warming you as you sip a double. The experience was only made better when a fellow pub goer decided he wanted a red wine with Fanta and a twist of lemon, to remind him of the sangria he and the missus had just had in Spain. Our effervescent publican was quick to acquiesce, and added umbrellas for good measure. The food was delicious, well portioned and timely. It was so good that we went back for a second night and was not disappointed. This time a lorry driver named Dave educated us on the differing accents of Scotland and thoroughly entertained us with his impersonation of a horse. But don’t let our account fool you. The Portland is elegant and richly dressed without being garish. The large hall out the back is perfect for weddings, and the staff confident, friendly, and more than up to the task of completing your perfect Highland holiday. Highly recommended by a pair of Australians, possibly on the hunt for a reason to stay in Scotland. That reason might wear a kilt. And own a castle.

My friend and I stayed at the Portland for 3 nights. We received a very warm welcome, bags taken to our room which was a twin. The room was spotlessly clean and had everything we required. Kettle with plenty of supplies. The beds were very comfortable and good quality bed linen used. Bathroom was beautifully tiles and again plenty of supplies. I am a fresh air fiend so I was delighted that the windows opened. The breakfast was superb, everything you could ask for from juice, cereal, fruit and plenty toast. I had poached eggs and they were cooked to perfection. My friend had the cooked breakfast and what struck us both was the high quality ingredients used. The staff were so friendly and courteous and couldn’t do enough for us. This hotel is a little gem and I’ll definitely be back

Was recommended this place by a local B&B for an evening meal. The atmosphere was cold, dark, bare and unfriendly. Ordered a roast dinner. When it arrived it had no roast potatoes. I returned the plate and it was returned with the potatoes and an apology. Upon paying the bill I asked if I could take away a small amount of ice but was told they had nothing to put it in. A local said surely you have a plastic bag it could go in. Then the rep as we don’t have enough ice. It was quite clear we where not welcome and it’s equally clear we wouldn’t dream of returning.

We booked at short notice and stayed in a room with a huge four-poster bed. It seems that the Hotel has been refurbished by new owners who are doing a good job of up-dating and revitalising this large property. The staff we most welcoming and the manager agreed that he had made a mistake in the pricing of the room (too cheap) but honoured the agreed price. We ate in the restaurant/bar on huge portions of Battered Scrabster Haddock, chips and Peas, the staff were welcoming and friendly and after dinner we enjoyed a couple of beers and a chat with some other guests. The hotel is ideally located on the A99 some 30 miles south of John O'Groats, there's plenty of parking and the pretty Old Lybster Harbour is a 20 minute walk away, The Full Scottish breakfast on offer was beautifully cooked and of significant proportion. We would stay again and I would happily recommend it.There were signs of further works being carried out and once these are completed I suspect the Hotel will become a popular venue for the North Coast 500 travellers.

Have just been for their Sunday Carvery lunch with my family and yet again we had an excellent meal at a very reasonable price. The meat choices were well presented and efficiently served by Bobo and the vegetables were "properly" cooked as my grandfather would have said, neither too hard nor too soft and with lots of variety to suit all tastes. The meat gravy, always my favourite, was superb, just as it should be, however, there was also a vegetarian alternative if required. Choosing a dessert was difficult although we could have had more than one if we'd had any space left, but after a delicious Prawn Cocktail to start, followed by the Carvery, there was only room for Apple Crumble with Custard and Cream although my family had Sticky Toffee Pudding with Custard which was up to the usual high standard with lots of caramel. Fortunately we didn't have far to "waddle" home!It is lovely to have such a friendly establishment as our "local", lead by brother and sister team, Steve and Sharn along with other family members and staff. It is always a delight to pop in and discover the topic for discussion even if there are widely differing views on occasions.Other than The Carvery, the food on offer during the week is equally mouth watering. My favourite has got to be the Harvest Chicken (chicken breast smothered in bacon and cheese with BBQ sauce) served with vegetables and a choice of potatoes or chips. If you like Haggis, my daughter swears by the Haggis Bites to start followed by Highland Chicken. In any event there are so many choices, whatever you choose, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. On special occasions like Mother's Day, for example, they add that special touch as Wallace 108 mentioned. In that instance it was a potted Primrose, supplied by Jo and her husband from the local Nursery, but I do believe they will be doing something similar for the Easter Carvery next weekend.Whether it is a special occasion or you can't be bothered cooking one evening, if you stop in at the Portland Hotel, you will receive a friendly welcome, be served great reasonably priced food by efficient staff and will return home sufficiently satisfied, having had a pleasant experience.I look forward to our next visit :)

As the B&B we had booked was unable to accommodate us due to ill health it was suggested we stay here. A kerfuffle ensued as we had booked our original B&B through an agency however we received a phone call on the morning of our stay from the agency to say they had spoken to Amie at the Portland and paid our bill therefore we had nothing to pay. Upon arrival we were advised by Steven that there was no record of this anywhere and he had been on duty all day. We had dinner and we were then asked very quickly to pay for our stay. My husband again told him of the phone call from the agency saying the bill had been paid but he was told of a client who had "claimed" the week before that his stay had been paid by an agency however he had dinner and drinks and left at 4a.m. and no agency payment had been received. We were obviously being treated as behaving in the same way, which is ludicrous and upsetting. My husband paid on our credit card and came upstairs. The next morning, a note was in our continental breakfast bag offering apologies and saying Amie had confirmed the agency had paid for our stay. We felt we were being treated as "strangers to the truth". Hardly the way for a hotel owner to treat guests. I would also say when we ordered dinner in the dining room my husband advised Steven he was allergic to onions however his salad was full of onions!! All in all a very poor and frustrating experience not to be repeated.

I stayed here for two weeks with work. I’ll start by saying that the food and service here are first class, with fantastic staff who are very polite and helpful. The one thing which lets this place down however is the ease at which noise travels through the building. Everything seems to creak like hell here, the stairs creak, the floorboards creak, the beds in both rooms which I stayed in creaked, even the walls creaked. This is all well and good when the hotel isn’t busy but during my stay a large group of people arrived and the noise was just horrendous. As people move through the corridors the building sounds like it’s ready to fall down, the noise of peoples footsteps and voices travels through the place as if the walls are made from paper, not ideal when you’re a light sleeper like me. The shower in my room had an extremely poor pressure and was like standing underneath a watering can, once it had taken 5 mins to warm up. In summary, come here if you are looking for a restaurant which serves a nice meal with good service. Avoid if you’re looking for a peaceful nights sleep.

To be honest on a Monday night it seems to be the only restaurant open !It's very good - nice food, friendly/helpful staff. Not expensive given the lack of other restaurants in the area, but maybe there is a lack of tourists as well.I understand the hotel has recently been extensively renovated, it's been nicely done, and the restaurant/bar area is warm and welcoming. The web site lists things like scallops, which weren't on the menu during our visits (we dined twice in the hotel). Lovely place to eat if staying in Lybster (not much else there!) or a stop off along the north coast 500. Reasonably priced and extremely tasty. Staff were very friendly and accommodating as the main restaurant was full.

We had the pleasure of dining in this wonderful restaurant after a very stressful few hours. We had booked at short notice by telephone The Bank b & b in Bridge Street Wick, Only to find on arrival the rooms were up up three flights of stair and quite unsuitable for our octogenarian travelling companions. The proprietor was thoroughly obnoxious and initially wanted to charge us for both rooms.!!! After a three hour ring around we were lucky enough to find accommodation close to this lovely hotel where we enjoyed the most delicious dinner. Amy who looked after us was a real sweetie and commiserated with our feelings as she had also had a difficult day.The food and the service was first class. If you are in the area and in need of a meal DO stop you will be delighted as we were.

Ambiente con pochi clienti al ns arrivo e clima imbarazzato. Il servizio però si rivela cortese e veloce. Piatti abbondanti e birra buona. Prezzo nella media.

Visited for meal with family. Food was beautifully cooked and so nice to have fresh vegetables and potatoes and chips. Lot places now frozen. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The interior is beautiful. The outside does need a make over but understand inside first. However my son did say the front could make you carry on not realising the wonderful place behind it. Prices are competitive to places round about. It is worth a visit if in area.

Beyond saying the rooms are spacious, clean and en suite, the food is good and sensibly priced and the staff are friendly and kind, not much more to say. Provided a warm, dry refuge for 2 nights during particularly nasty thunderstorms (in July) . Then free recovery from my next stopping point (Brown Trout, Watten) back to collect my car. Highly recommended.

Have many happy memories of this hotel from my youth and was happy to be invited to visit following its refurbishment and reopening. The atmosphere was good and the welcome was warm. There are lots of interesting things to see in the dining room and the lovely aga was the talking point.Locally sourced produce meant the menu became limited as the day went on. We had to request yorkshire pudding with our roast lamb main course and sadly when they arrived they were stone cold although the waitress had needed a serviette to hold the metal dish they arrived to the table on.We were all astonished by the prices as main courses were £2 dearer than equivalent eateries and deserts were £1 dearer and half the size.My personal preference regarding mint sauce/horseradish etc., is that they are served separate and not put on the plate. I love mint and rosemary jelly but hate vinegary mint sauce so my main course was slightly spoiled by the mint sauce on the meat when it arrived. If I am invited to return I now know to ask for sauce to be left off my meal.

Lovely meal - the day's special's included a salad of freshly-caught local crab. A slightly limited menu - and they were very apologetic (and kindly adjusted our bill) to have run out of various dishes. We saw this as a plus - obviously menu was locally sourced and food cooked to order, not pulled on demand from the freezerVery friednly and professional waiting staff. It's an old hotel that's recently come under new management, so the setting isn't swanky - tho the dining room has a nice old-fashioned charm.A great find for us hungry (and delayed) travellers needing supper on a Monday evening.

This must be one of the worst pubs I have been in. Tables were filthy , floors were sticky and staff were uninterested. We ordered two drinks and could not find a clean table, then after using the toilets and actually feeling the stickiness of the floor , left. There are so many nice bars in this area, if you see it ... walk on by ! Giving it one star is flattering!!

Visited 3 times in 5 days and probably spent more on coffee than we did on merchandise (and Tiso is an excellent shop by the way). Excellent coffee, lovely cake selection and a truly fantastic full English/Scottish breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful. View to the Cairngorms outstanding and our doggy companions most welcome.

Dreadful food. After waiting for more than 40 minutes our inedible burgers arrived. Mine had 2 pieces of lettuce and a dry patty that was inedible until I added barbecue sauce. By the time the sauce arrived it was cold so even less pleasant. My husband's burger had bacon that was so hard he couldn't cut it. And the same patty. I gave an honest answer when asked about my meal and suggested they needed a new cook. It was the worst meal I have eaten in years. I'm told it used to be good. Avoid it at all costs.

Fantastic to have so many GF options to eat. We both opted for GF pancakes with bacon and maple syrup and a coffee. The coffee was perfection and the pancakes utterly delicious. Big, fluffy and just THE best find in Inverness! Thank you ❤️
