Porters Steakhouse in Southampton

A disappointing experience. There is no excuse for a restaurant of this nature to be out of so many menu items on a Saturday night. The service for the almost embarrassed waitress was fantastic but given it was our first visit here we are not sure we would return. The food although decent was not mind blowing ( We went to Miller and Carter 3 days ago and it was a different level to this) Maybe this was an exceptional circumstance and let's hope it was.

Came for a special date night and was overall impressed. The fillet steaks were cooked to perfection (one blue and one medium rare) and were full of flavour. Possibly best fillet I've ever had. Peppercorn sauce was also delicious and good texture. However, the chips were very disappointing and were quite oily and soggy. When it said triple cooked I expected crispy, might be a preference thing for me. The breads and dips were also very good but the croquettes were a little dry for me and wouldn't have those again. What really made up for those few negatives were the drinks. The cocktails were delicious and possibly best espresso martini I've had. The lighting was a bit harsh too, it didn't feel very intimate which given the Saturday night and also fact it's not cheap was a shame. I will definitely go back again one day but at the price, it's a treat not a regular dining experience.

Food was ok had the Tomahawk steak 🥩which was average a bit sinewy. The service was excellent and attentive but the place was quite empty for a Thursday night - the next door Porter House bistro thing which was part of the same place looked a lot busier.

Popped there for Sunday lunch and superb. The meat was excellent and the service absolutely spot on

Overall a terrific option for excellent steaks! They could stand to trim down the peliclle a bit closer. There were a few bites in the Steak Tartare where there was a bit more funk that kinda overwhelmed it. Same with the Porterhouse. It was great and I overall do like dry aged beef, but just a more careful hand with the knife would make these dishes perfect. Great service by our bartendress. Good cocktails and some reasonable choices of wines. Sides and sauces for their Porterhouse were great, but the cabbage slaw I felt was a bit of a mis-match for a steak dinner. Would like to see more vegetable options for sides.

During our visit to Southampton, we happened upon this hidden gem, perfectly situated in the heart of the city. Our waiter, Noel, was a consummate professional, displaying an impressive knowledge of the menu. With his expert guidance, we opted for the dry aged T-bone steak, which proved to be outstanding. The true stars of the meal, however, were the sauces—particularly the peppercorn and blue cheese, both of which were absolutely sublime. If you find yourself in the area, make sure to stop by—you won't be disappointed.

Came her as I love steaks, very dirty and mouldy smell in all areas Service very slow , ordered the sirloin steak , wife couldn’t cut hers and sent it back I was hungry so ate mine but it wasn’t good tough skin on top of steak?? Not melt in your mouth like all other steakhouses Overpriced menu

We had a lovely meal serviced by the staff on duty! However we order an cheese board for our desert, order taken by a lovely waitress, only to be then told we couldn’t have it which was disappointing but fine! The manager in an orange jump suit then came over I explained the situation to her and she was nothing but confrontational and rude! She basically made us feel like rubbish and even when telling her every time we had come before we had had this she made us out to Be liars! We have travelled miles to come here and even booked hotel based on lrestaurant choice only for us to be left with a sad birthday girl whom never wants to return! Sadly the lady in the jump suit has ruined any chance for us to come back again! She was vile to us! Instead of listening to us she was up for an argument! No wonder the restaurant was half empty! So sad as was my wife’s favourite restaurant ever! Sadly we won’t return! A 50th birthday spoilt by management not the team! We spent over £200 on our meal and only ordered second bottle of wine to have with the cheese board! The manager needs to learn how to listen and not be so rude! The manager seemed just up for an argument instead of actually listening! Such a shame as once loved this place!

A Hidden Gem in Southampton! The restaurant's signature dishes feature locally sourced, dry-aged beef. We ordered a rib-eye steak and a sirloin, and both were perfectly cooked to a medium doneness. The exterior was beautifully seared and crispy, while the interior remained juicy and tender. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Thanks to Noel for his friendly and attentive service. We can't wait to return!

I had an absolutely fantastic birthday meal and service here, couldn’t be happier. Thank you. I had the fillet 8oz steak medium rare.

Food was so good, I had to give compliments to the chef. No music, the place lacked an atmosphere ... shame. Toilets are in the basement so not very accessible unless they had a hidden disabled loo.

Came here for dinner as many positive ratings of this being the best steak house in Southampton. Firstly, the staff here are incredible - they are all very positive and friendly despite the pressure they seem to be facing. We bought the dry aged sirloin as it was the only on site dry aged steak that they still had available - this was £90 for 2 people. Unfortunately, on arrival, the steak was truly terrible - incredibly chewy, high fat and bone percentage - probably 30% of the total weight count was ‘edible’ albeit heavily chewy meat. The manager was 10/10 at dealing with our concern and arrange for replacement steaks for the kitchen. Unfortunately the replacement steaks took 25 minutes to arrive and were relatively average. I feel that the owner is most likely applying indirect unnecessary pressure to his fantastic team - this could be not hiring enough staff, forcing the kitchen staff to serve all cuts of meat regardless of quality or some other reasons.

Went for a combined birthday/anniversary celebration dinner on a Wednesday evening when it was very quiet. Excellent welcome and offered complimentary prosecco for our anniversary! Shared an amazing brucshetta starter then had the fillet steak and ribeye steak mains. Both were cooked perfectly and very tender. The clearly homemade hand cut chips were great and they happily substituted thin fries on one, as well as a different sauce on one (both were excellent). Service mainly from Liam was brilliant who really looked after us - we were really too full for deserts but while looking at the menu he brought us a mini chocolate brownie on a plate decorated with a chocolate "Happy Birthday" which was much appreciated! They normally have the excellent Cornish Orchards cider on draft but the tap wasn't working so had to have a bottle instead - still great, just more expensive!! Overall a really enjoyable evening with absolutely top quality food.

We paid £100 for our meals and we had to pay £23 pounds more for service fee. The service fee is supposed to be the waiters service which was little to none, they just took our order and ask us 1 time if everything was okay. I don’t believe thats enough to force someone to pay this fee keeping in mind that your only option for a meal was at least £30 pounds.

Fantastic roast beef lunch with all the trimmings & great friendly service as always.

I came today with my partner at 7pm for a date night. The food was lovely and despite long waiting time we really enjoyed it because of this lovely young gentleman (we didn't get the name)taking good care of us and checking constantly if everything is okay. I just want to say he really did a good job and we are definitely going to be back Food worth the wait.

I am disgusted at how porters steak house treat their loyal customers. I bought 2 gift vouchers for family for Xmas.Both family members used over the last 2 weeks one last and was fine no questions only for my brother tonight to use it and be told you have to use with in 6 months. Even though there is no expiration date on voucher and told it's in the terms and conditions. They refused it, so they basically stole my money and his. I am furious that this could happen how many places have gift vouchers for 6 months, and if they do, they surely should have an expiration date to say when it's running out. So people, I advise you not to buy gift vouchers because they are basically taking your money, knowing full well they aren't gonna accept your voucher. Well depends they accepted my mother in laws but not my brothers even though they were purchased same time ??? On your gift vouchers it doesn't say anything about an expiration date ???

Honestly the best Steak & Service in Southampton! Staff are so friendly. I must thank Cam for her hospitality, always a delight. The food is absolutely amazing! I’ve tried a few dishes now and every one has been perfect! A great range of cocktails and wines available. I’m excited to visit again soon.

We had tomahawk steak we wanted it medium well done , it came out red so bit disappointed. The cocktails were amazing. The side salad was good but very expensive beware.

My first visit to Porters was lovely! The food was great, very nicely made; the atmosphere was very cosy, not too cramped even though there was a fair bit of customers. The staff were very attentive and friendly. They made sure our visit was enjoyable. We will definitely visit again!

Very disapointed went for my birthday wasnt great abd 10%service charge for 2 people is a joke we didnt pay it.wont be going again not a patch on miller and carter.

Ellis was fantastic! What a lovely guy! The steak was DELICIOUS! We had a lovely time. Was quiet so no real atmosphere but that didn't matter when we were sat in our lovely booth with comfy chairs and table. Service was amazing and so was the food! We will be back

Our first visit to Porters and certainly not our last! We visited for our anniversary meal and were treated so incredibly well with all the staff wishing us a Happy Anniversary and bringing us a complimentary glass of champagne which was so special. Josh was serving us throughout the night and he was so professional yet friendly at the same time, thanks Josh! The food was beautiful we had a few 'nibbles' from the menu and then Fillet Steak for main which comes with chips, salad and peppercorn sauce so no faffing around with having to order all the extra bits. Everything was top notch and certainly some of the best food we've had in Southampton. Thank you to Josh and the Porters team for a great experience!

An impressive restaurant with tasty quality dishes. The nibbles were delicious especially the beef croquettes and the charcoal arancini. The fillet steak was great quality and full of flavour, the wagyu burger was also delicious. Very friendly service from Liam and Camilla welcoming us with a drink on the house for our anniversary a very thoughtful touch. Overall a great experience and definitely recommend.

Had a really good Sunday roast. Roast Lamb with Mint sauce, crispy roasted Parsnips & Potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, creamy Cabbage & Pumpkin served with a side of creamy grilled Cheddar Cauliflower😱

Visited recently for a graduation celebration. Despite seeing good reviews, we had an awful dinner and were let down on multiple fronts. 1) When we arrived, we were told our booking wasn’t in the system. This wasn’t necessarily bad in and of itself as we were seated quickly, but it was a sign of things to come. 2) Service was incredibly slow. All in all, it took over an hour for starters to arrive and 2 hours for our mains to arrive. There was no mention of slow service, and no apologies afterwards. It was very strange that this wasn’t acknowledge at all during our dinner. 3) Two steaks were decent, but one was impossible to cut and incredibly tough. Honestly, the menu was like a game of roulette. Many dishes were passable, some were horrible. All were overpriced. The waiting staff were relatively friendly (if not attentive) and the decor was nice enough. Seems the kitchen staff were not on point and in general there was a sense of mismanagement. Would not recommend based on our experience.

Highly recommend Porters Steakhouse, from the food being amazing to the staff going above and beyond to ensure everything is perfect! We had a table of 30 for a birthday event and not one thing was wrong everything was organised and we could not fault any of the food!! All staff members were lovely, we will definitely be back!

Ellis and Liam made our experience the best! They truly care about their customers dining experience and the food is absolutely delicious! Strongly recommend this as a must eat place while in Southampton.

Very nice and polite staff and quality surroundings. If I could fault in what I've have been told is the best roast in Southampton, I'd say the gravy wasn't thick enough, not enough vegetables and the potatoes a little under done plus not crispy enough. It was still great, but a few adjustments and it could indeed be the greatest.

Beautiful atmosphere and dishes

Had brilliant Mothers day the food you just couldn't find fault with. The staff went above and beyond. Will not be going anywhere else for a meal they were the complete package.

Steaks are good but almost everything else is microwaved - piping hot in the middle and luke warm on the outside. Service is pretty slow.

We have been here twice and we have already booked a third. The food is something else, the dry aged steaks are incredible, I've never tasted flavours like it! The cocktails were really good, so refreshing. Liam was our server this time and he was amazing 👏 He was very attentive and answered every question we had ( sorry about all the questions! ) He made us feel very well looked after! We are looking forward to coming back for the rib steak 😊

We visited for a company Christmas dinner and overall the impression was outstanding. Everyone enjoyed the food, the parsnip soup starter was mind-blowing, would've been happy with 3 bowls of that. There were a few odd niggles - my starter got claimed by someone else in the group, but all issues were quickly resolved and the waiting staff were excellent, taking extra care to ensure I was getting what I expected after the initial hiccup. The 3 vegans in our group (me being one of them!) were very impressed with the food considering we were in a steakhouse, although would have appreciated an extra vegan offering on the Christmas set menu, as the set menu offers one vegan dish per course (no choice) whereas the main menu also offers a plant burger and a polenta, it would be good to offer vegans some choice on a set menu - 3 vegans in a group of 25 meat eaters shouldn't be a big kitchen issue when you're serving the same to other customers. The nutroast with trimmings was good though! Not a big dessert person but the pear tart was incredible. I have no doubt we'll be returning next year, as will many of our colleagues now and again. Our own experience aside, I see reviews raving about the food but not liking the decor and dropping 2* on that (priorities!), and food complaints with photos of empty plates (confused!), I'd recommend Porters to anyone. Thanks for a great night and kudos to the staff, they were all great and very attentive to our group.

Parking on a meter paid with card. Spacious nice ambience. Fast and friendly staff. Clean. Toilets downstairs didn’t see disabled toilets. Delicious t bone steak tasty veg. Fine dinning!

I cannot stress enough how delicious the food was. I highly recommend their steaks and the pigeon breast as a starter! The atmosphere was nice and the waiters were very polite. They made sure everything was okay.

The food was amazing but the service was very slow food took more than an hour to come and they gave us the drinks for free We will be back soon

I’ve been to Porters for a roast a few times now, NEVER been disappointed, absolutely delicious! I’ve been with my partner and with a large group of friends and the staff have always been very attentive, welcoming and polite. Even my little pooch gets fed and watered 🐾 DEFINITELY in my top 3 for Roasts in Southampton :)

Went here for bottomless brunch and it was excellent. The food was fantastic as were the mimosas and cocktails. The staff were lovely and not once did we have to flag someone down to get another drink, someone always noticed and came over to take our drinks order. We will definitely be coming back for another brunch!

I visited here before and it was lovely, we were so impressed with the food, atmosphere and the staff. But now they have put up some ridiculous, very tacky leaf things all over the place which completely ruins it. I have visited other places that manage to pull off the plants look and makes for a great Instagram which is what I assume Porters is going for but they really missed the mark here. Unimpressed and won’t be returning.

I’ve always wanted to go to Porters for dinner but never got round to it. So we bit the bullet and did a family trip. Tonight was amazing! We we’re served by Liam, who was very attentive and lovely. He helped us decide on which steaks to have, and drinks also. Prices were very reasonable and perfect for the food you got. Every steak was cooked perfectly. All our compliments to the chef. I definitely recommend this place. Very calm and peaceful and a great vibe overall. 10/10. Thank you very much to Liam and the Porters Team

Best steak in Southampton for sure. The dry aged steaks have a brilliant meaty taste to them and come in generous portions. Perfect for a special occasion!
