Food is good but they take ages. I phoned up 30mins before collecting. When I got there I still had to wait another 15 mins. Order Aloo paroante. All the filling was falling out.

Had samosas from other places for years , so I decided to try this place after a friend recommended it. Had veg samosas and a cob type thing (which I was told had veggies on and was indian street food). The shop owner suggested that I butter the top and bottom exterior of the cob and to fry it. Did so on his recommendation, and it was spot on. Now the samosas , they were large and hot , but they had a spice taste to the pastry which wasn't very nice - tasted like fried samosa snacks I had , had before sold in supermarket like crisps ( taste is off putting ). Prefer plain pastry with the spices mixed in with the potato and peas etc. My partner said she thought they tasted like frozen pre - prepared items and not like the fresh ones we have from elsewhere. Shame really , as the place is clean and modern, and I really wanted to give this place 5 stars on food , but the taste issue for me caused me to mark it down. Sweets looked nice in the shop too , but I don't think I'll be going here for samosas again. Shame.

Visited on a recent trip to Shrewsbury. Visited after walking past on the street and fancied a bit of lunch.PositivesStaff are lovely and polite. Unlike a previous comment I think that there was a great deal of warmth actually from the people there? Really good how they handled a full cafe as well. Not flustered.ProblemsThe food was no more than average. Menu is unimaginative. Had a prawn sandwich. Come with a side salad with fruit in it? A bit strange for me. Rest of the menu just wasn't appealing. A sausage roll and salad? Seems the place is frequented by an 'older' crowd. Some may like the old world charm of the decor, in some cases I do but this place was simply tired. Sadly would not return

I have visited this tea room a lot recently with my mother. The service is always very good, the staff are polite, helpful and professional. The food is also very good, homemade, and it is excellent value for money I think. I have recently had a delicious, moist lamb burger with sweet potato fries, a chicken and ham pie with some lovely vegetables and very nice pastry, and some sort of chicken enchilada. I have enjoyed each of these very much. The puddings are something else though. I recently had a homemade chocolate fondant with blueberry and maple sauce - it was seriously good, one of the best puddings I've ever eaten. Yesterday I had a chocolate, raspberry and cranberry pie, which was also delicious and very rich, although not as good as the fondant. I hope to eat many more chocolate fondants here in the future.

My friend and I went here for lunch last Saturday while on a day trip to Shrewsbury. We found Poppy's on the internet - so glad we did!! If not, we would have made the mistake of looking for somewhere else as it looked so full! It was busy but when we went in the staff were so friendly and helpful and found us a cosy table in the back room. Great choice on the menu, took us a while to decide, we weren't rushed at all. We opted for the baked potatoes with maple ham....mmm ....delicious. Only downside was that we didn't have room for a pudding!!!! My coffee had a 'free' top up. The staff were very helpful and attentive, without being pushy. Look forward to visiting Shrewsbury again ..... can't wait to sample some more delicious meals at Poppy's!!!!!! Yesterday, Saturday 18th October, my friend and I were on a day trip to Shrewsbury. We had found Poppy's on the internet (we had not read any reviews on Trip Advisor) and decided to have lunch here. Arriving about 1pm the Restaurant looked very full. We were given a very friendly welcome and asked if it was a table for two before we could even ask!! The waitress looked around asked us to wait a moment and very quickly reappeared to back us to a table in the cosy rear room. We were warned about the low beam over our table, given menus and shown the specials board. We were allowed plenty of time to decide on our choice, this was needed as the menu is quite extensive! We both decided on baked potato with maple roast ham, I had Earl Grey tea with lemon and my friend had filter coffee. The baked potatoes were large with a huge amount of chunks of beautiful ham, served with a side salad and coleslaw. My pot of tea provided more than two cupfuls and my friends coffee was refilled during the meal.We were asked by at least two members of staff if our meal was satisfactory. When paying the bill I was asked about our meal, our visit to the restaurant and our plans for the afternoon. We were give advise on places to visit and directions around the town. As we left the staff were busy finding space for an unbooked party of 11. The food, atmosphere and staff are all brilliant. Do not miss this lovely little gem.

Nice location centre of town. Walked in to no hello and no real smiles given just told to sit anywhere. I was alone and sat at table for two. Once my pot of tea together with cup, saucer etc. arrived there really was no room on the table, for much else. The tea was very nice. I ordered at first lamb burger which was advertised outside on the board. But this was not available. So ordered beef buger with chips with side salad. I asked whether there was any tomato on the burger or if it was in side salad. As I am unable to eat tomatoes. I was told no. Meal arrived quite quickly looked lovely. Chips were very crispy quite nice, although was unable to eat nearly half of them because they were on top of the side salad and there were sliced tomatoes on them! Weren't risking allergic reaction for a few chips. Burger had onions on it but both were completely tasteless. The bottom of the bun was soggy and started to fall apart. A lot of grease was coming out of the burger I wasn't enjoying it at all so left half of that too. I was asked if my meal was ok by a lady who was half way up a staircase when asking and had no intention of listening to my answer as she carried on walking. I didn't reply to her but I don't think she noticed. I felt no warmth nor welcome in this cafe. When I paid my bill the lady took my money she did half smile and I felt dismissed. My opinion is that there are probably a lot of local regular customers who use this cafe. Someone like myself who was just visiting isn't their clientele. Sad really

We found Poppy's whilst exploring Shrewsbury on a Sunday and were attracted by the selection of burgers advertised; unfortunately they offer only a limited menu on a Sunday, so we returned two days later. The pork and apple burger was everything I had hoped, topped with caramelised onion and Shropshire blue cheese. I even managed to eat black pudding for the first time in my life. An additional treat was the home made coleslaw. The only down side was that I was too full to try any of the mouth watering desserts on offer. The staff were also very friendly, with helpful suggestions on where to visit.Final warning: Poppys is in an old building so the toilet was not designed for anyone over 6ft!!!

We left the flower show earlier than intended at 6pm as it had started to rain and decided to get something to eat. Being one of the most difficult nights in the year to get a table in Shrewsbury everywhere was fully booked then we came to poppy's which was half empty, the menu looked good so we went in. After ordering I said to my wife there is no smell of food from the kitchen or adjacent table, if the is no smell there is no taste e.g in the 2 for 1 chain pubs that take a portion from the freezer, heat it up and serve it. I was not wrong, the mushroom starter was covered in some mushy (not mushroomy) tasteless sauce. The pork main course arrived with a similar sauce on the plate, when the waitress was leaving apparently finished we asked where the pork was, on investigation we found a tiny piece beneath the sauce, it was incredibly small, in fact I took a pic of it for a laugh. The waitress arranged for another piece to be brought but too be honest the lamb, pork and sauces were so tastless we lost our appetite. I am puzzled because so many people say the Sunday roast is so good, all I can say is the menu looked well put together but the sauces and meat were almost certainly pure cooked, frozen and reheated losing all taste. Incidentally the oil the croutons were cooked in needs changing it has had all sorts cooked in it in its time.

For starters we chose a cream of leek, lentil and mushroom soup from the specials board. The soup arrived promptly and was fantastic and piping hot with croutons and a choice of bread roll. Very tasty and filling. For the main course we chose from the main menu, Chilli con carne, and I had the roast beef, served with a yorkshire pud and mixed veg and again the food was piping hot and served on hot plates. We didn`t have room for a sweet, as the starter and mains are decent size portions.Nice relaxed atmosphere in Poppy`s, all the staff are very polite and attentive, Even David the Chef/Owner came out from his kitchen and chatted with us.We couldn't fault any part of our lunch at Poppy`s, and we`d certainly return to eat there again.Thank you David and your staff.

All of my party had a main from this menu, either the Strawberry Chicken, or the Normandy Pork. We've been to Poppy's a few times and I would have to say, overall it was fine, nothing special, basic food which was edible and staff were generally friendly and helpful. We've had some friends who had recently eaten at Poppy's (a week or two before we did) on a Sunday. They were shocked at how bad the Sunday roasts were, really awful quality in terms of meats, vegeatables etc. We were a bit surprised to hear it was that bad, after all how wrong can you go with a Sunday roast? So out of curiosity and somewhat desperation we went there and tried it. Well we totally agreed with what we were told, I would go further and say it was disgusting, which is a term I have rearely had to use when describing an eaten out experience. Dried out - tasteless meat and vegetables, really awful, roast potatoes which were reheated (deep fied) which were absolutely vile. We did complain to staff but to be honest they didn't particularly care and to our horror we were still charged the full amount despite leaving over half of it there on the plates as it was inedible. Overall a dreadful experience. Will certainly not be going back there. Avoid the Sunday roasts if you do go there !!!!

First visit to Shrewsbury and found Poppy's by chance. We only wanted a light lunch even though it was Sunday lunch time there was no problem with having just soup. It was very good. The building was amazing, and what was good was that the staff was able to tell us a little about its history which was very interesting. So next time we visit Shrewsbury we'll be back for a full meal.

We were in the area and decided to pop in this lovely looking tudor tea room for some breakfast, I had the Henry tudor 15 item breakfast which was excellent and my partner has scrambled egg on toast with gorgeous mushrooms, the food and service was excellent with free filter coffee refill, a real pleasant and relaxed breakfast, would definitely recommend and go again :-)

Prawn omellette was absolutely wonderful and the pecan and toffee roulade to die for. Have been going to Poppy's for over 14 years and although it has changed hands in that time have never been disappointed with a meal there. Friendly service, prices just right, excellent food, what more could you want.

WE went for a girlie lunch and decided after perusing the menu to go for the thai fish cakes with sweet chilli and the chicken turkey and ham pie, both absolutely delicious however the side order of rustic chips was a little disappointing as it was just ordinary deep fried frozen chips quite expensive for what they were. The pudding menu more than made up for it, My friends hot lemon meringue pie with a raspberry jus and I think raspberry parfait ice cream was delicious as was my chocolate fondant. Well worth a return visit . The service was excellent and nothing was too much trouble, We finished with 2 lovely coffees and although we were there for a while, we were not given the impression that we had outstayed our welcome

Often been to Poppy's for lunch but as a member if their new Dining Club decided to try their new Evening meals (evenings only open usually on Friday and Saturdays). Glad we did ! Have eaten in many restaurants world-wide and in our opinion. This Valentines Night special meal could not have been better anywhere. Food terrific. Service exemplary. The owner and chef greeted us almost as long lost friends. Food imaginative twists on old favourites. Full of flavour and as a "special", we had lovely little treats: champagne cocktail and canapés to start, three courses, a red rose, a small bag of sweets, chocolates and liqueur coffee (of our choice). Outstanding. But the "ordinary" evening menus are outstanding as well. Wake up people. Just go there. You will not be dissappointed!

Sort of stumbled across this restaurant cum tea room when wandering aimlessly around Shrewsbury on a long weekend break.Tucked in a side street, it is easily missed and certainly not particularly attractive outside but as the rain was just coming on, my wife and I decided to pop in for a drink and let the rain pass.Run by a chef/owner with two young lads doing their waiter, we were quickly and nicely welcomed and left menus.I decided to have a coffee and my wife, a Lemon meringue pie with tea.Service was quick with her cake (looked and tasted lovely) and tea delivered quite promptly and my (empty) coffee cup placed in front of me with the milk jug, sugar etc. also delivered.Waited for the coffee to be poured, waited, waited and as my wife was coming to the end of her meringue,During this time, I noticed a few other customers being given wrong items or orders being sent to the wrong tables so I decided to go to the counter to find out what was happening to my coffee. "Did I not give you it" was the waiters reply "ooops! and very apologetically I was finally given my coffee which, I must admit, was pretty good. Despite all this 'entertainment' I would certainly use Poppy's again as the staff were very polite, friendly and did sort out all the problems which they created and as far as I could see, the quality of food and cooking was excellent.

This place is a hidden gem just off the town centre of Shrewsbury! Me and my partner popped into Poppy's after being recommended to go by many friends. We were not disappointed, although seen as a cafe the food is restaurant/ bistro standard! Greeted at the door by friendly staff we were well looked after the whole time we were there. Seeing that there was a January/February special of 2 courses for £7.50. I started with a tomato, leek and lentil soup which was a lovely combination and amazing flavour! My partner enjoyed a warm salad with Shropshire blue cheese, walnuts, pears, celery and grapes which was to die for! Especially the dressing! For main i had a hot open chicken sandwich which was a mouthwatering combination. My partner enjoyed sausages and mash which seemed simple on the menu but the sausages were of a very good quality and the red cabbage and beetroot mix was a nice change from normal red cabbage. I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable meals I've ever had and at such value!Would recommend to anyone of any age!

We had an overnight stay in Shrewsbury and found the restaurant via a board pointing off the main shopping street. They were offering a pre-christmas menu in addition to the usual and there looked to be lots to choose from so we went in. Very friendly waiter looked after us. Canapes were a nice surprise at the start and very tasty. All 3 courses were beautifully presented, perfectly cooked and in good portions - honestly one of the best meals we've had.

Great food in substantial portions. There is a regular menu with daily blackboard specialities and diets catered for. Didn't have room to try a dessert.

Poppy's is such a delightful building, with a real history, beams and uneven floors, the character is just immense. Not just wanting to know more about their new F1 room, we decided we would enjoy some culinary delights whilst we were there, especially as it was the evening dinner menu that was on offer. We were seated at a spacious table and handed the evening menu and specials available that day. I instantly was drawn to a starter from the specials menu, beer and cheese croquettes with a roasted red pepper dip and balsamic tossed baby leaves. This came as a generous portion, excellently presented and the dip was an excellent choice to compliment the croquettes. I was delighted with the flavours and pleased with my choice. My colleague had opted for the classic creamy garlic mushrooms, this was served in a white wine and chive sauce and accompanied with hot garlic ciabatta croutes. Again being a decent portion size, Andy soon cleared his plate and said the it had the right balance of garlic and the consistency of the sauce was perfect. Having enjoyed the starters, we were keen to taste our mains and after a short period of time they arrived. I had opted for one of Poppy's very own speciality 6oz burgers, the pork and apple burger, served with Shropshire Blue Cheese and black pudding, I was delighted with the choice or rustic chips or sweet potato chips being available with this dish, sweet potato is my favourite and very rare to see it as an option on a menu. The presentation was fantastic and it was also accompanied wit fruity coleslaw and salad. There was no doubt the burger was homemade and I can honestly it was fantastic! The Shropshire blue cheese was the perfect partner for it and I was really pleased with my choice.Andy had opted for the pork Normandy, soft tender pieces of pork in a calvados brandy, cider, garlic, honey, fresh apple and chive cream sauce. Accompanied with a four grain rice mix and fresh green vegetables, Andy claimed the dish to be flavoursome, the meat just fell apart and every mouthful was pure taste bud delight. Again presentation was fantastic and from what we had experienced so far you could be mistaken for being in a fancy restaurant. Not wanting to miss out on sampling the desserts, we noticed that David had claimed one dish has his 'special recipe' the sensational sticky toffee pudding, served with whipped Devon cream, vanilla bean ice-cream and hot caramel sauce. Now adding the word 'sensational' to your menu to describe a dish you put your name too is brave, but myself and Andy were amazed by the taste, texture and a caramel sauce to die for, there was no doubt this dish was sensational. Sharing two desserts, the second was also home-made, hot lemon meringue pie served with tangy lemon sauce, raspberry coulis and raspberry pavlova ice-cream, being on the same level as the sticky toffee pudding the quality of the desserts was worth the visit alone. The lemon meringue was warm and the flavours combined with the raspberry flavours just exploded in your mouth, purely delicious! Every dish we had tasted was fresh, presented amazingly well with a high amount of attention to detail and we really could not fault anything. We asked our waitress, Beth, if the ingredients were fresh and she explained that where possible everything was fresh and they tried to source as much locally as possible, we also learnt that Beth was David's partner and his daughter was also a chef, this added a lovely touch knowing it was a family run business, and showed they all strived to provide top quality food and service. Now back to the original reason for our visit, the F1 room. David managed to spare us ten minutes from the kitchen to talk to us about his passion for F1 from such a young age and he is a real fanatic. Purely because of his love of this sport and his collection of posters and memorabilia, he is in the early stages of transforming the room to show many pictures, the history and development of Formula one over the years and with a special emphasis on British drivers. David's preference is also McLaren and Jenson being his favourite driver. David has also been fortunate to travel around and see many races for himself and certainly knows what he is talking about. As the room isn't completely finished, we were aloud just a sneak preview of some of the photos and images that will be mounted for all to see and it looked fab. If your a petrol head or just want to see the interest in the F1 room I highly recommend you pop along to poppy's soon, but make sure you sample the wonderful delights on the menu too!

We were looking for somewhere to eat on a Saturday evening and happened upon Poppy's Shrewsbury. We were given a very personal welcome, nothing was too much trouble and the staff were very friendly. The food was excellent but probably not a surprise as the chef only missed his Michelin star by a fraction. The restaurant only started doing evening meals in July this year and I certainly hope they do not stop, looking forward to going back.

Tucked away in an authentic Tudor quarter of Shrewsbury, this place has all you need for a romantic or family outing or just a treat after a busy morning shopping expedition. Whether in their secluded courtyard or seated indoors in their beautifully restored interior, you will be delighted by the range of creative, freshly prepared food on offer. We felt spoiled for choice. As a vegetarian I was very pleased with the Goats Cheese and Caramelised Onion Tart, always one of my favourites, this one was quite perfect. My companion ate all my delicious accompanying sweet potato fries and went on to enjoy an organic Pork and Apple Burger topped with Black Pudding and Shropshire Blue Cheese. Washed down with a bottle of Concha Y Toro Chilean Merlot as recommended by our host David Atkinson, we left well fortified for our river boat cruise with Sabrina boats. When you next have an hour or two to spare remember Poppy's is open for breakfast, lunch and weekend evening meals. You can confidently recommend it to your favourite Granny or a first date. It has definitely become one of my most favourite haunts.

The restaurant has an old English authentic tea room feel to it - the menu has an extensive range of food available to suit all. I had a cheese and caramelised onion baguette with sweet potato fries - it was absolutely delicious! Can't fault anything. The others I was with also said the food was to die for and seasoned/cooked to perfection (one is a chef herself and is normally fussy!). The owner David is a very pleasant and approachable gentleman who is happy to accommodate any request. I would not hesitate in recommending this place for anyone visiting Shrewsbury!

We wound up at this restaurant with our three very ravenously hungry children because it was one of the only ones that served food before 6pm. The service was fast and the daily specials were good. Two kids ordered tuna melts which were plain, but that's what kids seem to like. The servings were not huge, but that gave us the opportunity to order desert. The toffee pudding was fantastic!

I Have used this cafe before and have had no problem. Went in on Saturday for lunch with my son and wife. Told seat anywhere, as their were plenty of spare seats. Looked at the menu and decided our different choices and waited noticing other people were waiting to order. The four staff were not paying any attention to the customers and doing there own thing. More customers came in and sat down, one of the staff decided to take orders from the various customers, but for some reason decided not service us. At this point I said to my wife lets walk as they don't need my trade and there are better eating establishments in Shrewsbury

Had foreign friends staying and tried to show them to traditional 'cream tea' on passing Poppy's I saw the sign proudly declaring Cream teas so we seated, place was nice, a bit dated in a 1980's way as opposed to the date of the building period. The tea was served in a stainless steel pot, wouldn't hurt to push the boat out with a nicer tea pot, the scone itself seemed a tad stale, with bought in jam and very firm cream also bought in. It's seems to me that a traditional café could perhaps but a bit more effort in and prepare it's own scones, jam and cream and make the experience a bit more enjoyable and fancier.
