Poplars Fish Bar in Stevenage

I went in there to get a quick lunch to go. The man was really patient with me, as I made my mind up what I wanted (med cod and chips), took cash and was cool that I went to the supermarket next door to get some milkshake while he was cooking it. When I came to eat it, the food was really nice and really quite enough - even though I only got the medium.

Poor attitude from the owner. Unlike nearly every business, this one doesn’t take card payment. We managed to not see the sign. No need for sarcasm and rudeness.

Never had a bad experience the fish is lightly batter & crispy the chips our so good me & my wife really like it

I love this place I need skinless fish for my grandson and it's no trouble for them was in twice Friday some for my daughter and grandson and then back for me and the wife and the curry sauce is fantastic. Love the staff as well.

We used to go to this chip shop because their burgers were outstanding cooked on the flat top everything was perfect.. now they fry the burgers which makes them oily and not so nice so we dont go there anymore 😪😪😪

Very good fish and chips,pies sausage in batter, burgers but decor needs up dating and chairs need replacing. Great staff very helpful and always smiley. Easy to park

This is a lovely fish & chip restaurant and take away. I come here regularly when I'm on this side of town as the food is very good quality, is allways well cooked and very tasty. There is a good menu with the usual chip shop fare on the take away section. The location next to a very busy supermarket, chemist and doctors surgery is handy, and has plenty of parking. My only issue these days is its getting rundown, with sone of the fixed seating having split and repaired with gaffer tape, and dirty in places I.e.the base of the heaters and under the shelf that's next to the can drink fridge. Hopefully this will get sorted out as this is truly a great chippy with nice polite staff and good food.

Waitresses very friendly, good choice available. We had cod and chips, rock & chips, saveloy & chips. All freshly cooked and very tasty. The restaurant still needs some TLC and could really do with a revamp.

This is regular place for fish and chips as my Father lives close by. The quality and quantity of food selection on their menu is very good. They also cater for the older people living in the area by serving a smaller and lower priced fish and chip option, where the quality is of the fish is good. The food is always hot, tasty and served reasonable quick even during busy times. There is a dine in option too.

Most disgusting meal I've ever had the misfortune to order. 2 pieces of cod wrapped together soaking in grease, any thought of lovely crispy batter completely disappeared when they slid out of the oily paper. We had ordered a large portion of chips, hey what could go wrong there? Well .......... they (the sorry excuse for chips) were so soft and soggy they had compressed themselves into a solid mass. They were unable to be separated, so one lump or two plonked onto the plate. I notice many 1 star reviews on here re this place - can't bring myself to call it a 'restaurant' as that infers they offer something edible. Surprised there are any that get 2 stars or over. You have been warned, eat here at your peril. Also why is this place only taking cash? All sounds and smells very fishy to me.

forgot to put chips through then forgot to give us drinks we paid for and arrived home to find only had ships but fish was missing. Never going back

Wish the menu had stated battered fish had skin still on never know this before or ever been served fish like this from a chippy. Disgusting chucked away and went else where. Chips not great not worth the money.

My husband ordered a half chicken and chips and got what looked like a very overcooked quarter chicken at best with some pale greasy chips.After seeing what he had it went straight in the bin when we got home, no joke! £5.65 put straight in the rubbish - eat indoors or go somewhere else as this was not good. Do not understand how other reviewers are giving it such high ratings.

If you want the best fish & chips in stevenage, this is it. Never had a bad meal from here in the last 10 years. visit this shop. Takeaway or sit down.

Had another good meal here. But décor still shabby and some painting would help. Excellent food as usual though.

Fuimos allí con mi hermana, que está en una silla de ruedas, nos sentamos a una taza de té y un plato de patatas fritas, ambos estuvimos de acuerdo en que las patatas fritas eran muy buenos, el personal no podría haber sido más servicial y acogedor, quedé muy impresionado con el aspecto y la limpieza de este pequeño restaurante y definitivamente volver pronto para una comida apropiada.

Went on a busy Saturday for lunch. Restaurant was busy, but service was still great. Never had a bad meal

Fuimos por una parte descarado de patatas fritas hoy. Algunos hombres estaban quejándose en la cruda y hasta alrededor de las patatas fritas se reembolsará, debería haber entramos directamente allí y entonces. Llegamos a la casa mía, Abd adivina qué?! Poco hecha. Cada vez que voy de aquí las patatas fritas son nefastas, pensé que era sólo yo, pero no aparentemente. No se visita otra vez o recomendarlo! :-/

Tenía otra buena comida servida. Camarera era excelente y amable y mi chips estamos genial. El restaurante está comenzando a verse desgastado (el papel, rayaduras en paredes, mesas, asientos rayados gastado) tan sólo necesita algunas reparaciones

Since we moved to the area a year or so ago we have had meals/takeaways from Poplars Fish Bar and it has never disappointed. Friendly service, great quality food and fast turnaround results in it becoming our trusted takeaway whenever we cant be bothered to cook/eat out. Parking on site is never an issue.

The special meal (for seniors) is very good value, fish, chips, peas, bread & butter & tea. I don't drink tea so asked if I could have coffee instead and pay the difference but was told that the owners didn't allow this and I would have to pay the full amount for a coffee. I was quite surprised as most places allow this. I therefore ordered tea which my Husband drank and I just drank the milk. We will not let this prevent us from going again.

Great chips nice fish. Always busy in there as its great value for money. Just popped in there for Friday supper and was all good

I had Rock eel they didn't have a large piece so I ordered 2 medium sized bits I ate nearly all of it I left some batter and some chips but I really did enjoy it the reason I gave it 4 out of 5 is there was no toilet for customers and the they could do with updating the tables and chairs but the food was fantastic and the place was very clean

We have visited here on numerous occasions and have always had a good sit down meal and attentive service.

As our local Fish and Chip shop I have no complaints. Service is always very quick and the fish, chips, pies, sausages and fish cakes have the family seal of approval. If you are in the market was traditional British fast food give them a try, I'm sure you won’t be disappointed.

Reasonably price and portions were very big. We had to share our fish and chips amongst us as the portion were very generous. Seems a bit quiet though on a Saturday early afternoon.

No idea why this place never made Tripadvisor before. Simply very good quality fish and chips (rock, cod and haddock were all tried on our visit: all got the thumbs up) in a friendly and clean place right next to Sainsbury's. Excellent chips, quality batter and the biggest pickled onion ever seen! Park in the supermarket car park,, stroll in and take a seat at the restaurant part and you'll get waitress service! Obviously popular with the locals for lunch which averaged out at about £6.50. The portions were generous too. Very impressed.
