I expect the ice cream to be expensive in a place like this and the cafe had run out of many flavours of ice cream and Magnums. This we can put up with - but we were served by a sullen youth/boy in a grey hoody (why does he need to have his hood up on one of the hottest days of the year whilst serving customers, so that we could not understand his mumbling reply to a friendly question?) and who did not even know the words Please and Thankyou. Our rambling club will not be returning to Pollys

Myself and my family visited Milldale today. We sat and watched the ducks while enjoying a cracking cuppa and delicious hot pasty for lunch. The owners are wonderful and so thoughtful. Really lovely customer service. Despite it clearly being a popular place for tourists qnd walkers it maintains it's blissful tranquility and Polly's reflects that with their easy going nature and eye for detail. After our hike in Dovedale Stepping Stones, we stopped off at Polly's Cottage for some well deserved ice cream. The ice cream was amazing! My friend and I went for the classic mint chocolate chip whilst my other two friends opted for the orange juice ice lolly. Pure joy on what was already such a blissful scenic adventure! During our day trip, one of my friends lost her ring which was a stressful and upsetting part of our day trip. The staff member at Polly's was more than happy to help us with this 'needle in a haystack' situation. She was so lovely and an all round great people's person. We believed the ring fell off in the loos, however the loos had shut upon coming back to Polly's explaining the situation. The lady informed me that she would make sure one of the staff members would check the following morning to see if the ring was dropped in the loos. I provided necessary contact details in case the missing ring was found and we travelled back home. The following morning my friend was contacted by the lovely lady at Polly's explaining her ring was found and the lovely people have posted it to my friends house. This day trip we took wouldn't of been as amazing as it was if it wasn't for the incredible and supportive staff members and community in Milldale. Thank you all so much for giving us such needed happiness in these unprecedented times. Thanks again!

One of the reasons we keep coming back to Dovedale is to walk the dog to Milldale knowing there is Polly's Cottage to offer good refreshment before turning round and taking the walk back. Our dog gets very excited and knows Pollys means ice-cream- (his favourite) and they do a smaller dog friendly sized tub. they also do hot Bovril in the winter, and hot pasties etc too. It is located next to the shallow part of the river and you can sit there on the bank and eat and drink, very rewarding and relaxing. If it ever shut down we would be very, very, sad and would need to find somewhere else to go walking I think.

When ever we do walks in the Dovedale area, we always call into Polly's Cottage cafe and my favourite snack is their cornish pasty plus a hot chocolate which I then tuck into sat next to the river whilst trying to dunk the ducks (joking but tempting). We went to the cafe on Tuesday and there was about a 15 minute queue but the service is always friendly and there is a good range of food and drinks for what is a small cafe run by two owners. The only issue is the opening hours and it is made clear on a posting at the cafe that as their custom is so heavily dependant on the weather, then the cafe does not open outside of summer, during periods of bad weather, which in my opinion is fair enough as there is no point opening if only 3 customers turn up during one day. Perhaps the cafe could do with a website where they could update their opening hours on a daily basis but guess this might cost more than it's worth....either way, we love the place !!

I have never heard anyone say a bad word about Polly's cottage which is well known, everyone I have spoken to speaks highly of the food the variety of things on the menu and service offered! What really saddens me is reading someones comment who only felt the need to post a terrible review but never felt it necessary to comment on the other times they had visited and enjoyed it! As a regular visitor to this part of the Peak District we quite frequently grab a drink and a snack from Pollys but sadly no more. We, and another family, queued behind a family who, after a number of minutes, were provided with their ice creams. It was at this point that we were told that Pollys was closed and that we really could not be served; they were terribly sorry. It was after the advertised closing time of 5pm, by about 6 minutes, so we accepted this and left.Having visited the river we then passed Pollys again on our way home (5 minutes or so later) to find that another family group were just paying, having been served, despite us previously having been told that Pollys was closed. Either you are open or you are closed; you cannot be both.Sorry but we will not be stopping here again.

Coffee good and young lady serving very friendly and polite. Staff in the back preparing food with no gloves and getting orders missed or wrong but blaming others for their shortcomings

We held my friends baby shower at hettys today and they kindly let us have the upstairs room and served us high tea. It was such a beautiful room and we felt very special. The food was amazing and the scones were out of this world.

My friend had booked myself and another friend in for dinner here for our birthdays. We asked for bread and olives for the table as a starter, this was served with just 2 pieces of bread and there were 3 of us so we asked for another and the waitress said she had asked already and we would need to pay for an extra bit of bread, they also didn’t have the oil to go with the bread. Two of us ordered steak for main, I’d asked for no mushrooms, when they were served the sauces were on the wrong plates and mine had mushrooms, the waitress took it back then came back and said that my friend and I had been given the wrong ones so to swap and then it would be right. The steaks were so insanely salty, it made my friend and I feel sick. The chips were meant to be triple cooked but it didn’t taste like it. My friend had a blue cheese sauce and said it was quite bland. Our table was booked for 7pm and we were informed a few days before that quiz night starts at 8pm. This was fine and it was good to be informed beforehand but we hadn’t considered how loud it would be, the music during the meal was loud and the microphone was the quiz was also super loud so we couldn’t hear each other speak. My friend asked for something to be taken off the bill due to the poor steaks, the lady who sorted this out was great and very apologetic, she was very helpful in sorting it out, the waitress we had was also lovely. It seemed to be an issue with the chef. We hardly ate our meals and got McDonalds on the way home because we were so hungry. I would go back there sadly.

Popped in for evening beer. Community run traditional pub. Worth knowing it is cash free / card only.
