Dined here with a friend, and the high spot was undoubtedly a) the salt n pepper beef starter and b) The service from Katie and Abbie, two staff who knew the menu and advised wisely on wine choices. Will return, and I urge you to try here- you’ll like it!

Excellent service, and excellent Sunday lunch. Roast beef was freshly cooked, rather than the precooked beef most restaurants now use. Will recommend to family and friends. Thank you to Harry.

Really good food: 9 of us eating, a mixture of vegetarian, pescatarian and meat/eaters, adults & kids. The menu has something good for everyone. The celeriac steak I ate was fantastic. Staff are delightful. As a vegetarian in Suffolk it was a joy to find 3 decent veggie options on the menu.

O dear, looked great on nice sunny Sunday afternoon, but…….. several dishes sold out ! Took drinks outside to sit on tables, decided to raise the lowered umbrellas. Noticing that several other occupied tables also had lowered umbrellas, they were all broken with no pins to safely lock in place so we broke health and safety rules and climbed onto tables and tied them up and did this for other appreciative drinkers. Greene King get ya act together !

When we arrived as a group of four we were told that some dishes were off as they equipment issues in the kitchen. However, the remaining options looked fine so we stayed. With one exception the food was good. However, my wife's creme brulee was not set and was essentially sloppy custard. We mentioned it to the waitress who said she would tell the chef. We heard no more and had to leave as we were going to a concert at Snape Maltings. It's a shame that little things like this let it down. An apology or a replacement would have made the difference.

Another restaurant who think survival is to add a 10% service charge from spring 2024. Not on website, not menus. Usual words like you can take it off, but it shouldn't be there. Whilst I normally give 10% tip, a tip is just that if you like the service!!

Great pub, great atmosphere and outstanding service. I visited the Plough and Sail with my partner and my mother. We all had drinks, they had tea and coffee. I had beer, naturally. I was pleased to find that the Adnams stranglehold on beer sales in the area around Southwold was at least partially loosened by the availability of the other Suffolk beer giant, Greene King. I don't have a problem with Adnams beers, they are generally a decent pint. I just want to have a choice of the many other worthy Suffolk breweries. So well done P&S ! The bar lady who served me was super friendly and helpful, suggesting we sit in the 'snug' where the wood-burner was doing its best to alleviate the cold and dampness outside. Generally, well happy with the P&S. Will definitely come again, possibly to try what looks like a good food menu.

We booked a table on their website but when we got there, no reservation. It seems they ignore bookings made on their website. A long way to go to be turned away. My advice is go to the Crown at Snape as a better pub or good fish and chip shop at Aldeburgh, a much better dining experience. It really ought to be zero stars as we didn’t even get to try it.

Always our favourite venue for lunch or dinner when holidaying in the area. This time we walked in on Saturday with our friends. We were welcomed warmly by a lovely waitress and shown a great menu full of seasonal and local produce. 2 of us had bass and the other 2 had cod - utterly divine. Excellent service today from start to finish by the young charismatic man! Alex and Ollie have a great team and great venue here, and we highly recommend to anyone visiting in the area to go and visit. Best wishes John

I went with a friend before attending a show in the Britten Studio at Snape Maltings. So we needed our food promptly, but the service was slow. My friend and I couldn't help noticing that people who arrived after we did were served first. The same applied to the two ladies sitting at the table next to us. We were all baffled as to how other people, arriving later, were served first. I ordered from the Specials board: sea bass with potatoes and samphire. The fish was lovely, cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The samphire and the buttery sauce were very tasty. However, there were only a couple of very small potatoes - not enough to balance the dish. This "small" problem could easily have been put right. However, when the waiter came over to ask the customary "how's your meal?", and I mentioned that they were pretty stingy with the potatoes, his response was "Oh, ok" and he walked off. If that waiter had offered me more potatoes, or offered to put it right in some other way, I would have been very happy and this experience would have got five stars instead of three. The problem is, that although the food was tasty and I enjoyed it, the slow service and the attitude of the waiter very much spoilt things. The waiter (who I was later told is the new manager!) really needs to get some training in customer service.

Visited yesterday with my husband before going to watch the show in the Britten Studio. Service was quick, staff were really happy and we were overjoyed with our food. I had the confit duck leg and my husband had the cod both from the specials. Both dishes were flavoursome and plentiful. The other tables around us looked to be having more of a ‘lighter’ lunch maybe a ploughman’s (?) either way the food coming out of the kitchen looked really nice too. Special shout out to the staff for serving us so quickly and with a smile. We will be back!

We popped in for dinner. I had sea bass, which was nicely cooked with some chips. My husband ordered cod though, which was not cooked - stone cold in the middle. The “crushed new potatoes” was a lumpy mash. We discussed this with management, who dealt with it well and didn’t charge us for the cod and a couple of drinks. My husband spent the next day feeling ill and I think won’t be eating cod again for a very long time. It was all a disappointment. The pub seemed grubby and the staff were scruffy. We were hoping for a good gastropub, but left hungry.

What a fabulous team they have at the Plough and Sail. We turned up without a booking for a party of 14 and they accommodated us swiftly and without fuss. The food was divine and the attention to detail by all staff was greatly appreciated. The location of being on site of Snape Maltings means there's the opportunity for a leisurely stroll before or after your visit. They also have open fires - one of which is in a little snug area which is great to use when you want a little coziness. The heart and soul of any pubs lies in its staff and the Plough and Sail certainly did not disappoint. Definitely will be going back 😍

The food was ok but minimalistic for the price. But the real disappointment was the staff who were so unfriendly and disinterested. The Plough & Sail is promoted as having "exceptional service" but this was anything but. There was no atmosphere and no one came over to check up on us that we were enjoying our meal or came to offer more drinks in the lounge bar after. When we left no one said 'goodbye' or 'thank you for coming'. My wife said goodbye to a member of staff near the exit but she completely ignored us. Wife had the crab from the specials board. Her assessment - fabulous! I had risotto and the pitta bread with homemade humous. Was all very tasty and enjoyable - correct quantities. We always eat at the Plough and Sail if we are in the area because the food is always excellent (we must have eaten here 30+ times and the food is always 10/10), it is great value for money (considering the quality of the food) and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Today we visited for Sunday lunch and had a gorgeous starter of grilled sardines with tomato puree, olive oil croutons and black olive tapenade - superb! Then came an amazingly tender and tasty roast beef - a perfect Sunday lunch. We finished our meals off with a raspberry & chocolate delice and a fantastic sticky toffee pudding with ginger ice cream. The whole meal was superb, to be honest I think we'd have to rate it 11/10! What's more - often we go to restaurants/pubs and have to really hunt through the menu to find anything we fancy eating. At the Plough and Sail today I could have eaten every single thing on the main menu or specials board. Give yourself a treat and visit this fantastic pub - you won't regret it.

Whilst the food and service were ok I have to take issue with the wine list. The same bottle was listed twice on the wine list at different prices and I pointed this out to the waiting staff. I chose the bottle at the lower price. I was charged the higher price on my bill which I raised as an issue only to be told that ‘the till says it’s this price’ Terrible customer relations, but as the table service was ok I didn’t want to elevate the issue. The owners have 2 other locations nearby, which I will probably avoid if this is the treatment they give staff when they have made a mistake.

We had an enjoyable meal in this pub whilst visiting Snape Maltings. The service was very friendly and good menu choices. The food was tasty we both had duck starter and my wife had the vegetable risotto and I had the fish and chips. The fish was cooked lovely, although chips were dry and my wife’s risotto was a thick and gloopy texture but full of veg. The duck starters were good but lacked a little flavour. Another regular place on our list. This restaurant is superbly well run with delicious food and great service. They are very consistent and as usual that did not change ok our most recent visit. It was also very covid aware with clear procedures in place to keep us all safe. Everyone who I know rates this restaurant which highlights the appeal. We have our whole staff Christmas party here every year and I’m yet to hear any criticism. My only slight feedback would be an additional vege option or two on the main menu and an alternate vege roast on Sunday’s. The options currently are more than satisfactory but as we visit semi regularly it would be nice to have some variety. I would recommend here to anyone looking for a meal out in the snape area! Catching up with family after many months, for lunch today. Fairy lights on. Varied menu of good food. My mother in law has a really small appetite but really enjoyed the small portion of fish and chips. Pie of the day was steak and ale which my husband thoroughly enjoyed. Full of chunky pieces of steak. I had the herb crusted cod served with butter beans, chorizo and olives - if I’m honest it was a little salty but the ingredients were of a salty nature! I have always loved the Plough And Sail. The food is brilliant service lovely wines are good too. However I Had dinner there this week and was very disappointed. There was one waitress trying to serve every single table working very hard indeed, but clearly could not do the job on her own. She was lovely but completely over worked and this made dinner uncomfortable and awkward. I could’ve let this go but the food was not good. It felt like the chef was in the same position food was tasteless and overcooked. I’ve never had this here before and I hope it was just a bad night. I understand what a struggle it is for restaurants to keep going and they are cutting back on that stuff but we the customer is still playing the same prices that we paid for good service and lovely food. Now we’re getting rubbish service, not great food and still paying the same prices.

This isn’t a pub. There are just two tables in the bar area. When we arrived they were occupied so we took our drinks through to the restaurant which was post lunch and had a couple of tables finishing their coffees. We were promptly asked to move because the empty tables had been set up for the 6pm dinner service. It was 3:25 so plenty of time to us to have our drink before the evening diners would arrive. Staff were unwelcoming, turning away customers who weren’t prepared to go and sit outside (it was a cloudy breezy day) telling them the restaurant wasn’t for drinks. So the result is 20-30 empty tables for 2 1/2 hours and a really unwelcoming atmosphere. We had a swift half and left.

I had dinner with a friend on Wednesday 3rd November - the table was booked for 6.30. Firstly there was no heating so we had to keep our coats on for most of the meal. The food order was correct and very good. However, when we ordered liquor coffees we received black coffee with a short of brandy in one and Drambuie in the other served in a cup. This is not a liquor coffee! There was no cream and they should be served like an Irish coffee - you drink the coffee through the cream..After about 9pm we were made to feel uncomfortable with staff cashing up and putting on their coats (I hasten to add this wasn’t because of the cold but because they wanted to go home). We had to wait for our husbands to pick us up and felt like a nuisance. The restaurant is supposed to be open until 11pm. Visited the Plough & Sail for dinner 12/10. Very enjoyable. Good food and the restaurant was quite quiet. I was bit shocked when presented with the bill - which seemed excessive. I didn’t really check it - and paid. However, my eye was drawn to the fact that I had been charged for two carafes of wine when we had only had one. Further scrutiny revealed that I had been double charged on a number of other items as well!! The total over-charge amounted to £119.35. Once pointed out this was refunded via my bank card - however the refund is yet to show up on my account (the original full over-charged amount being deducted from from my account). I accept that mistakes can be made - but was a little surprised with the response when I asked how this could have happened - and was told that it was ’not unusual’ and that is why ‘we always ask the guests to check their bill’. I guess that many guests will rely on the bill to be accurate and that they are not always checked! If this is the case, then something is seriously wrong. I didn’t really get an apology for the mistake and I will be watching my bank account carefully to see when the refund amount is received. Hopefully the management will look into this and get back with a more plausible response.

We enjoyed a nice meal with family we hadn't seen since before Covid. Enjoyed a nice starter and then all had roast beef which was lovely. we would have given it 4 stars but our beer was stale (wherry). The waitress quickly changed it for some ghost ship and said another customer had complained it was stale and she had smelt the beer and thought it smelt ok. This is the problem with pubs not employing cellarmen/women who know about beer. If a customer complains about stale beer, don't serve it to other customers hoping they won't notice, because we will and we will mention it in the review. We will eat there again as the food/ service/ atmosphere/ prices were very good but we will stick to keg beer so we are not disappointed.

The pub lacked atmosphere- with our table being stuffed in the corner just off a thoroughfare making us feel like we were in the middle of grand central station. Despite checking beforehand when we booked that our dietary requirements could be catered for tonight the waiting staff seemed very unsure of what could be offered and whilst they did their best to meet our needs we were not overly confident when eating our meal which took away the enjoyment somewhat. The food was well presented and actually of a good standard. We were in and out within 1 hour(3 courses) - the staff seeming to want to hurry us up. Overall the pub is a long way off our expectations compared to other venues we have tried locally. Very disappointed.

Average food , very poor service . We were reminded twice from 8 pm that our table booking was until 8.30 ( although this wasn't advised when we booked our 7 pm table) . Having had no delays in ordering etc we pointed out that having just ordered dessert at 8 pm our ability to be gone by 8.30 was in their hands !! Felt very unwelcoming . Won't be back

We've eaten here quite a few times before, maybe 6 or 7 times . Usually very reasonable. But ; last nights starter oh come on ! crispy beef with an asian slaw and soy dressing . Sounded ok , but oh my , dry beef cut into almost square strips , "asian slaw ' consisted of red cabbage and spring onion drizzled with a thick soy sauce ! that was it ! £9 oh come on we know your better than this : ( Thankfully the mains were much better i had the plaice and a ragù of butter beans and chorizo , Mandy had the herb crusted cod with salsa verde and samphire, both very good . I asked for another pint of Mosaic ; that just didn't materialise . .... . Mandy had a peanut butter chocolate brownie and ice cream , that was adequate .

Of all the places we ate in Suffolk this was our worst experience as the pub \ restaurant seems to have lost its way somewhat . Although you couldn't say the food or experience was bad it certainly had no wow factor either. When we arrived for dinner the place was pretty empty but clearly this place is popular considering how quickly it filled up. I had a prawn cocktail starter which was disappointing , quantity over quality for sure. Prawns were clearly from a large frozen pack of rather bland tasting prawns and the Marie Rose sauce was over diluted and not full of flavor. partner had smoked salmon which was ok. As soon as we had finished the waiting staff were hovering over the table as the mains were clearly almost ready , they duly arrived a couple of minutes later. I had Sea Bream which was a special of the day , the fish did not taste really fresh but just ok , there were a few of my starter prawns thrown on the plate for good measure which added nothing to the dish. New potatoes were a bit undercooked and the dressing on my salad was massively too sweet , I think a whole jar of honey was in there. My partner had fish and chips which was the star of the meal although the tartar sauce had a weird ingredient in it that made it not very pleasant . The serving staff were friendly and efficient enough but we both clearly felt on a conveyor belt and the whole experience was over in 45 minutes. The whole experience was not good and we had much better in almost every other venue we went too .... food average ... service good .... recommend if your not too fussy and your starving hungry as it was quite reasonable value

Went to this restaurant last night. Very friendly and helpful team. Lots of space around tables and the area was very clean and tidy. We had the squid and Camembert starters - both delicious. For mains we had the tempura prawns, chicken with Mediterranean vegetables and the salmon. We asked for a couple of changes to the meals and these were happily accommodated. Is was quite busy but we were looked after extremely well.

Visited the Plough and Sail last year, made sure we returned again. The first thing that you notice is just how happy the staff are, and you receive a warm welcome. Nothing is too much trouble, there is a nice buzz about the place and the food is first rate. Go to Snap go to the Plough and Sail.

From the point of booking to the point of delivery, just an excellent and helpful service. My second celebratory party held here on the 26 June for a party of 6 was so enjoyable. We dined in a corridor and well spaced in view of the Covid restrictions and could not have been made more welcome or looked after better with excellent and quite delicious food.Well done all and thank you again.

This was an excellent meal. The menu was good, less so for veggies, but the Crab Salad was wonderful. ...and the children's pasta meals were excellent helpings and went down well with a 3 and 5 year olds. This was washed down by the ever good Adnams Ghost Ship in pleasant surroundings. Only downside is that its London prices!

I ate by myself but was looked after beautifully. Asparagus with a tasty dressing as a starter and exquisite dressed crab with a very appetising mixed leaf salad and hearty potato salad. A very good house white. I was not hurried and service was as usually impeccable. I always feel at home here and nothing is too much trouble.

Went there for a lunch meal having ridden to the location. We found a hair in my fish and chips and my husband found an unknown ball/pip/weird hard ball in his sausage and mash! The manager came over and rather than accepting the error, he made us feel like it was our fault. He just didn't accept responsibility for anything! His words: 'A hair is a hair and could come from anywhere, and the other thing we just don't know where it came from'. Is it acceptable to find a hair / weird hard ball in your meal? When it came to the bill, he took out the sausage and mash but still charged full price for the hairy fish and chips, which we did not even finish, of course! In all honesty we were so disappointed about the experience at this place that just paid and left. Not a great vibe or set up in this place sadly. In addition to the terrible meal experience, their outdoor shelter is full of holes which means that if it rains you are better off outside. 2 out of their 6 tables leak and you have to avoid the water pouring in your head! You would expect after so long being closed they had enough time to fix this essential job.Sadly wont be going back here or recommending this place. Management could offer a better service

Superb food! Tempura prawns starter was described by my husband as the best prawns he had ever had. We both chose the burger with chips for the main course and I can honestly say this was the nicest and tastiest meal either of us have had for some time, including way before lockdown. Large portions. Friendly and efficient staff. We highly recommend a visit.

Having visited Snape Maltings many times stopped for Sunday lunch. Absolutely wonderful homemade soup and one of the best roast beef dinners we have had. Also do children’s Sunday roast and a good range of other children’s options. Great service and visited during Covid restrictions which were managed well. Fully recommend.

We’ve eaten here twice already this week whilst on holiday, lunch and dinner. Both times the food has been great and the service very welcoming and friendly. It is much quieter than when we have visited previously and with no drinkers at the bar, due to Covid of course, but this has not ruined the atmosphere or the welcome. Definitely recommend a visit and it is dog friendly too.

We were staying nearby, and the menu for this pub was displayed in our rental. It looked pretty ordinary, but it was close by, and served Adnams, and it was raining, so we went. They were managing the whole distancing thing really well, and we got a private corner to ourselves (5 and the dog). Then they showed us the specials board, which was in a whole other league from the printed menu. Really superb fish dishes, and a great venison pie for the carnivore. A nice kid’s menu, even if the kid did pick around a bit. Nothing new there. So, they cater for all tastes, but keep surprisingly quiet about the high end stuff, which was still reasonably priced. Friendly service, and thoroughly recommended.

We booked into the dog friendly pub for dinner and were not disappointed. The menu has a great selection to suit all tastes with vegan and pescatarian options, plus a changing specials board. Starters of fish soup and deep fried Baron Bigod brie, plus mains of sea bass and sea bream were all delicious. Make sure to save room for desert though. The chocolate tart and tiramisu cheesecake are amazing! We went back for lunch later on in the week as it was so good!

So fresh, just lovely.I think fish is definitely the best thing over there and I recommend trying it from the day's specials.I was also pleasantly surprised by the bill, quite cheap for what we had.I love Snape Maltings and love that there's such a nice place to go for dinner. An early evening dinner on a Monday night. TA reviews steered us with a fair head wind to the plough and sail...Covid 19 procedures completely in place. Service from all staff right from the off, excellent. So friendly, they could have been born in Yorkshire...no higher praise. My burger with cheese as good as you get anywhere. My wife's fish and chips good, but perhaps no cigar as the batter a little stodgy, but hey still enjoyable.Big shout out to one waitress who had the patience of a saint whilst trying to serve one guest who changed his mind at least half a dozen times. So here's the but. And you will notice I have highlighted all the positives of this very good restaurant up front. All the positives are down to the staff who delivered. The rub for me was the lack of atmosphere in the "barn area". Covid dictates space and there is nothing any restaurant can do about this in these dark times. The P and S did everything right, but the meal for me personally became a refuelling exercise rather than an experience. Had we been with friends, then that would have provided another dynamic. The two of us... well you might think we've got problems with our marriage after 32 years. But my wife and I can talk for England and we both felt the same, wishing for the end of this awful virus.Anything else?Well no piped muzak. Perhaps this would create some atmosphere? Food for thought. Also the phone into the P and S is very loud, particularly when not answered. 18 rings, 20 rings and 6 rings before pick up, not great for either the ringer or the guests eating. But look, staff were busy, we live in strange times and I'm frankly nit picking when there are many more important things to comment and worry about in these strange times. In closing I would ask anybody reading to support restaurants like the Plough and Sail. They are doing a great job and we can't wait to return, hopefully sooner rather than later.Keep up the good work and top marks for your excellent food and service. Respect.

We have often driven past The Plough and Sail whien visiting Snape mid week - but as were were in the area over the weekend we decided to book a tabe for Sunday Lunch ...We were given a table by the window which overlooks their small courtyard and as it was a lovely day, the sun shone in on us - we chose the Roast Beef which was lovely and tender - cooked pink (as we like it - but on ordering we were given the option of having it cooked a bit more if we wishes) - lovely presentation with a good selection of freshly cooked vegetables ..... we had to share a desert as we were so full ...... We will definately go there again - lovely staff , friendly and attentive - and a good selection of local Ales ........ What more could we ask for?Tables were well spaced and cleaned - hand sanitizer station at entry.

A bonus - the staff and service are both faultless, well done team.

We were recommended to the Plough & Sail in Snape and buoyed by the reviews we went there this evening. On arrival they could not find our booking and the food was average. I ordered tempura tiger prawns but I'm not sure they were tiger prawns as the batter used certainly was not tempura batter! 4 small prawns for £8 When they arrive we were nearly given a bowl of olives which we did not order! The fillet of Sea Bass with crushed potatoes samphire and tomato salsa at £17.50 was acceptable. My wife had the fish and chips which was a good portion but very greasy and as the fish (same batter as the prawns) was on top of the chips made them greasy too. Not sure what my sweet was although described as tiramisu cheesecake. Basically a foam on top of a hard chocolate and thin biscuit base. Didn't taste like tiramisu at all. When the bill arrived we were charged £3.50 each for the flat white coffee (what! dearer than a latte?) two cheesecake and two cappuccino so had to query and get the bill adjusted. When we questioned why a flat white coffee (not on the drinks menu) was so dear we were told it was how their till charges it and on leaving given the reason that there is a double shot of coffee. Didn't taste like it had and have never paid more than the cost of a latte anywhere else as they are normally cheaper. The staff were very pleasant and hard working - I cannot fault them but not sure we will return and if you do go double check your bill!

The Plough and Sail is like a tardis. From the front it looks like a small pub but at the back it has a huge, airy lovely dining area. The menu was interesting and appealing and focused on good local produce. I started with the Mediterranean fish soup with rouille, gruyere and crostini, the husband had Deep fried Baron Bigod brie with quince paste and crispy melba toast. Both were really good. For mains we both chose fish off the Specials board. Everything was delicious, portions are generous, prices are very reasonable and the staff are a delight. Special mention must go to Rosie - the loveliest manager, and the rest of the staff who were sunny and friendly and made the whole experience of dining during a pandemic an absolute pleasure.

Sorry to say it was the worst breakfast I've had in the cafe. But if I pay £15.10 for coffee and full English I expect the highest standards. Bacan was so bad I couldn't even eat it. The picture says it all. Who would serve a customer food that looks like that. Lovely staff but all they did was apologised for the drop in standards.
