Plaquemine Lock in Islington

What a great place to come across. A local pub, in a quiet residential location, with the such good food, great service and great atmosphere. The live music is terrific, it’s not so loud that you can’t hear or talk, we enjoyed it all. In fact we went twice and it was just as good the second time.

We are from southern Louisiana. My son lives near Plaquemine ,Louisiana. The food was very good. We had the gumbo and also had dirty rice. We also had the corn bread with spicy butter. It tasted like good Cajun food. They played a mixture of music but also included some good Cajun music. Thanks for a touch of home!

My partner and I went here on a sunny Saturday afternoon and had a lovely time. The pianist is really talented. The staff were friendly, there was high quality jazz playing and I had a nice well made cocktail. We wanted to order food and both opted for the po-boy. I am vegetarian, which already left a really limited menu. I appreciate New Orleans food, doesn’t lend itself to many vegetarian recipes, however in Islington, this do something a pub should easily be able to get right. Instead what I got was a baguette for £16 with some lettuce leaves and I would estimate 5 pieces of tomato battered, with minimal flavour. No effort had been made to consider flavour, volume or the fact that this is not worth the same price as the shrimp or chicken. Such a shame as before the food came, I was saying I might do a birthday lunch at this pub but because the vegetarian food is so poor, I can only consider returning for a drink. My partners shrimp po-boy was apparently good but not outstanding - the Tabasco sauce is pulling a lot of weight here.

Absolutely splendid time at this incredible pub/restaurant this weekend. Excellent, beer, food and wine list; together with a great team and an interesting clientele. Six stars! Bravo

Called today to book a table for two for my fiancés birthday. We have been here a few times and always enjoyed the food and warm welcome. Online it said it opens at 5pm, I called at 6:30. No answer. Called again and a guy picked up my call. You would swear the kitchen was on fire!!! He shouted down the phone, ‘IM VERY BUSY I CANNOT TAKE ANY BOOKINGS!’ Slams down the phone and take was that. So I decided to call back! Hoping I’d get someone else to answer, but no it was him again! I told him not to be so rude, that I’m only trying to book a table. He replied ‘THE BAR IS RAMMED!! I CANT TAKE BOOKING! GO DO IT ON LINE!!’ Then as expected slams the phone down for the 2nd time. 😔 I’m sorry but don’t hire people who can’t control a ‘rammed bar’ yet still have time to answer a phone call to shout at customers. I was only looking to book a table for a special occasion! Shameful!

Mes amies et moi sommes arrivées en pleine cohue, nous étions certes un vendredi soir, mais est-ce une raison pour que le serveur me pousse (littéralement et avec une certaine violence) dans un coin (en direction de la porte, que -à la réflexion- nous aurions d'ailleurs eu meilleur temps de prendre!) dans l'attente que notre table se libère. Le brouhaha et les décibels étaient d'une telle intensité qu'il fallait crier pour s'entendre et passer la commande, à une serveuse désabusée et vaguement hautaine. Grande sélection de très bons vins au verre. Délicieux corn bread (offert) et beurre salé. Le Softshell Crab Meunière, with pecan butter sauce était décent. En voyant s'échapper une sorte de jus brun, nous avons espéré que l'abdomen avait bien été retiré et la bêbête correctement nettoyée!...? Les plats principaux: 1 "Gumbo" (shrimp, sausage, turkey wing, okra) et 2 "Court Bouillon" (red mullet, scallop, winter tomato, rice, spinach) étaient plutôt bons, sans être incroyables. Nous avons continué à hurler pour nous entendre et la serveuse à être désinvoltement désagréable. Pas de dessert, nous avions une franche envie de partir. L'addition est arrivée, elle était totalement erronée, nous l'avons renvoyée. Une deuxième addition est arrivée, elle était encore erronée, le serveur nous a expliqué que celle des personnes qui étaient à la table avant nous s'était ajoutée ou mélangée à la nôtre et nous a demandé de lui dire que biffer. Non. Nous avons demandé une troisième addition, correcte, reflétant en tous points ce que nous avions consommé. Pour s'excuser, la serveuse nous a proposé de nous offrir un verre ou une sucrerie mais nous avons demandé, en revanche, s'il était possible de nous commander un cab. "No, we can't, sorry..." Ah bon? OK, nous allions donc nous en charger. Une addition juste nous est cette fois parvenue, nous l'avons payée et sommes parties. Plus tard, dans le taxi, nous avons constaté qu'un pourboire démesuré de 13.5% -pourtant clairement stipulé comme optionnel- avait été ajouté sans notre consentement et pire encore: avant la TVA! Nous avions choisi cet endroit car le Michelin lui avait décerné un Bib en 2019. Il peut s'en passer des choses en 5 ans... les inspecteurs devraient peut-être y refaire un tour et réviser leur jugement.
