Beware the parking! We had Christmas dinner in December. Just received a parking fine of £25 for staying longer than 2 hours. How are you supposed to enjoy a 3 course Christmas meal in 2 hours. Very, very unfair. I will never come here again. The food was excellent but who is training the serving staff? The bar tender was throwing bottles in the bin from a distance which made you jump every time he did it. The tables were cleared before everyone had finished. This would never be done in a real restaurant. My friends saucer was whipped away while she was sipping her coffee. There was no sherry, no port, the Madeira was served as a tot in a tot glass. When we have been before there was a supervisor hovering and checking on the staff. I know this is a training restaurant and we all understand that the students are learning but these are basics that should be explained the first week.

We were seven women who hadn't been together for a couple of years and we enjoyed beautifully prepared and served Christmas food of a very high standard. A well-judged menu catering for a range of tastes, with attentive but unintrusive service and at an extraordinarily good price. We were very well looked after in every way. City College can be proud of its training restaurant and we should cherish it.

Excellent value and service. Although this is staffed by catering students,(or maybe because of this) there is every attention to detail and lovely food, well presented. I have been there twice recently and both occasions were very enjoyable, throughout,My only slight critisism -the room temperature was a little bit too cool for comfort.

I ate here for the first time last night, attending with a group for their Christmas menu. I had chosen the celeriac veloute with apple. Whilst the flavour was ok, it was incredibly thick & the apple was a few chunks of 'dried' apple that had not been reconstituted so was chewy & slimy. Quite unpleasant. The bread rolls were standard but the butter - was it butter? - was whipped & horrible. My main was fillet of sea bream which was well-cooked but served with a roast parsnip (very dry), roast potatoes (dry , hard & disappointing) & carrots. Really??!! Service was good & the table beautifully decorated but I won't be returning.

Very interesting demo, learnt loads about chocolate (who doesn’t want to know about chocolate!!) followed by one of the best steaks I’ve had for a very long while! Perfectly cooked as I asked for followed by the chocolate dessert we had watched being made! And all for the bargain price of £15! Brilliant!

I was part of a community group who booked our Xmas lunch here. As this was going to be the first date for Xmas lunches and, as this establishment is part of the City College and is staffed by students undergoing catering courses, I was a little unsure as to what to expect. I was in for a very pleasant surprise. The waiting staff ( sorry - students) were friendly and very polite. They were also very efficient and extremely smartly attired. The whole place had a very pleasant ambience and was tastefully dressed with seasonal decoration although, it was not over decorated - just enough to make it feel seasonal and welcoming. The food was wonderful, well presented and served promptly, even though there were a number of quite large groups at the sitting. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to anyone and will certainly be visiting again.

PL1 has been mentioned to me several times, and fortunately I was in Plymouth during a week day for once, and decided that I should visit. A very friendly greeting on entering the restaurant, and I was served by a first year student, who whilst providing a great service, was obviously nervous, which was only to be expected. I had mackerel to start, and plaice as a main, followed by a brioche and pear dessert. The food was of excellent quality, served with good timing and a smiley face. This was my first visit but hopefully not my last. As part of a small group we chose from the Christmas menu, three choices on each of the three courses at a set price. The tables were festively decorated and co-ordinated well with the modern decor, jugs of water available at no extra cost and a small wine and drinks list available. The food was extremely well presented, hot and the main course accompanied by dishes of four vegetables enough for us all with some to spare. Even the late arrival of one of the desserts was accompanied by an acceptable explanation beforehand.A couple of small slightly negative points however which I hope will help the students who work so hard at PL1. One of the waiters insisted on calling me 'Miss' perhaps Madam would have been more appropriate to someone in their sixties but I saw the funny side and he was very polite. One of our group asked for a lager but the same waiter replied that there was only beer which they brewed themselves. This was incorrect so perhaps a better understanding of the drinks menu may be called for if this is not already explained to them. Well done all students at PL1 keep up the good work, hope to see you again soon.

I have been going here for many years and was impressed with the food and service. A recent change of staff has left things seriously lacking. Food has been cold and undercooked, bread rolls frozen in the middle and some desserts such as brownies, so overcooked you can't break them to eat. After complaining again about undercooked chicken, we were told by the rude lady in charge that "maybe there's no pleasing you ladies and you should consider eating else where ! Well, yes we will thank you, without the chance of an upset stomach at least. And on a note to the chef, al dante means cooked to be slightly firm and crunchy, not raw. When my daughter did her catering course at another college her chef tutor words were, I quote " al dante = chef too lazy to cook "...... Students are there to learn things like collecting menus after the orders are taken and not using them as placemats under the dishes. Dessert cutlery should be taken from above the plates and placed either side of where the dish will be placed. Servers should not lean across the front of you to gather empty plates or glasses. All these things were carried out previous to the staff change. The whole place needs an overall. To be honest, for the same money or less there are other places you can go.

Had an excellent evening. Food was the best i have had at a large function, where even large hotels often disappoint. Great atmosphere and service really professional which was amazing since the students were doing everything. Well done.

A brilliant meal prepared from local sources. This is a part of City College Plymouth FE andit's no wonder that the city has great food venues with the development of chef's from here

PL1 is an unassuming restaurant that serves good quality imaginative bistro food, it is well worth a try if you fancy something different, from all of the chain restaurants in Plymouth.

My husband and I booked a date night and having recently done a cookery class at the college decided to give PL1 a try. The parking was easy and just seconds fron the entrance. We were shown to our table and had three delicious courses all for a set price of £18. The resteraunt was staffed by students who were gaining qualifications in hotel services and the service was quick and efficient. The food was of a very high standard a much better than anticipated. We will certainly be back.

I was really looking forward to eating at PL1, after hearing such excellent comments, and I was certainly not left disappointed! Me and my partner paid £32 for a 3 course meal, bottle of wine and beer. You do not feel as though the standard of the food is reflected in the price, it is seriously amazing! Will be visiting again in a heartbeat. The only minor downfall was the confidence of some of the staff, but it was not an issue.

We had the buffet lunch that they serve on Fridays. There was a reasonable choice, the dishes were good and the service was keen, attentive and carefully watched over by staff. It was a very enjoyable and inexpensive experience and we shall go back. This is a great way of attuning catering students to the real world of restaurants. We did wonder if the grumpy customer who moaned more than he should have about the fact that it was a buffet (and not the usual three-course lunch) was, in fact, a stooge - planted to get the students used to difficult situations. We concluded, however, that he was not and were glad that he stopped before it became necessary to ask him to stop wittering on.

An excellent place to eat. Food was of a high standard and the service a credit to the hospitality trade. This is defiantly a first class place to eat and certainly does not give the impression of a training establishment.

A lovely meal, good menu, excellent value, served by students. They were obviously a little nervous but very polite and helpful. Will go again.

an exquisite evening!! The food, devised and cooked to perfection by the students. Service a joy, as these young people strive to please. Contemporary design in the restaurant, an evening to remember and be repeated at amazingly reasonable prices!!

With high standards at Plymouth College's training restaurant, the low overhead is passed to the customer for an affordably memorable dining experience. An occasional (but entirely understandly) nervous welcome by trainee waiting staff is balanced by a comfortable atmosphere and good food.

Our family visited the PL1 restaurant for a 'fine dining' evening with year 3 students having prepared a French themed menu. Have to confess that I was unsure what to expect as I would not describe our family as 'fine diners' but the quality of food can only be described as truly excellent, nice variety of courses and all served promptly and courteously by the waiting staff. This place really represents great value for money and gives the students opportunity to try out their skills.

PL1 is a refreshing and exciting place to have good food and great service in Plymouth unlike other places the attention to detail is amazing and staff and students work hand in hand. The two girls behind the deli counter (Emma) and (Chelsea) where very professional and provided a excellent service and great coffee would recommend to anyone from solo visits to large groups. Great work guys!!

We visited PL1 last night for a fine dining evening which consisted of a 6 course meal which costed £18!! The food was of an excellent standard, especially for the price and the waitress was very pleasant. One of the chefs came out after the meal to see if we had enjoyed it which was a lovely touch! Will definitely be back again ;-) thanks!

Food was delicious. Decor...a bit dated. But the main thing is the food! The service was okay but adequate.

I ate here today, the service was decent (if a little nervous), the decor acceptable, really well cooked food (aside from the broccoli & carrots which were a little over cooked for me), and the price amazing! I started with a perfectly cooked mackerel fillet with apple & beetroot salad, with watercress, my mum had the cauliflower soup which was tasty but a little too thick. Mains were a chargrilled chicken breast with lemon saffron sauce, beautifully creamy mash, broccoli and carrots, my mum had a huge baked pork chop with caramel apple & cider, mustard sauce (same sides). The presentation was beautiful for all plates. The bottom line, 2 courses for £7.50!! Coffee/tea £1 each and reasonably priced wines & beers. I will definitely be back, yes there are things that could be improved slightly but it's great food, with 'staff' that work incredibly hard. Try it!

Good place, which I presume is the new name for the Brasserie. Open from 10 till 2 weekdays with last orders 1.30 and a takeaway service. Excellent salads, plenty of freshly made sandwiches baguettes wraps etc. If you are close or are looking for a good lunch or morning snack it's well worth a try.

Very welcoming, Great ice cream flavours. Especially the Ferrero Roche and Millionaires shortbread. Lady went above and beyond for our dog letting her sit in the shade on a 25 degree day to enjoy her pup cup. Thank you!

the only place open on a Sunday on St Martins! So glad it was open, it was absolutely heaving but we got there in time to get seats and what was left of the cakes and drinks.

I've only ever called in for a beer but no complaints so far and staff are nice too. There's a big beer garden which is very useful for the kids and dogs.

Found this delightful upstairs cafe by chance and had some of the best vegetarian food for a long time. We were made very welcome and chose the hummus bowl and roasted veg toasted sandwich. Both were excellent and very filling.
