Pizza Express in Derby

Decent atmosphere (more rustic than the shopping centre one), nice food, brisk and friendly service. We had a classic pizza each; enjoyed it but would recommend ordering a side too.

Cant comment as entered the building saturday at 2pm ( it wasnt busy) and stood waiting to be seated. Was noticed by a waitress and ignored. A simple ' i will be with you shortly' would of been appreciated. Waited a further 5 minutes with zero interaction. Left.

Probably the worst gluten-free pizza I’ve ever had! My husband’s standard margarita pizza wasn’t much better. Really expect better from Pizza Express. ☹️

Very delicious! This was my son’s first time at pizza express and he loved it as much we do. We ordered the dough balls, pollo ad astra pizza and they’ve stopped making the pollo forza pizza but they tried their best to recreate it for me with the ingredients they had in the kitchen. We also had the brownie and ice cream for dessert which was excellent. Kids ate free which was nice and they even gave my son a lotus biscoff biscuit, his favourite!

Food was good; however, service was very slow both in taking orders and food coming out of the kitchen. It wasn't very full when we went either.

Well well well, I’d not been to Pizza Express for nearly 10 years so thought I’d pop in. I am so disappointed! What used to be a slick operation is now a lacklustre excuse for a restaurant. The restaurant was empty, literally 3 other people in there (see photo) but everything was SO SLOW. You shouldn’t have to ask the server for a drink when you first sit down - this should be their first question. After asking, she was surprised that I only wanted to order a drink and not food at this stage. Seriously? Isn’t that what people do in restaurants: order a drink whilst looking at the food menu!? After a wait I had to ask to order my food, and again after another wait, for the bill. I could accept it if it was busy but it was the literal opposite. Not impressed.

2nd time we’ve been in a month and both times the service from the kitchen has been horrendous! We were waiting 20 minutes for someone to even take our order and another 50 minutes for our mains! Restaurant not even 50% full!!! Really need to sort the service out before we will return! Such a shame.

We came here for lunch we both had salads my little boy had the 3 courses where he eats for free during the august summer holidays!!!… we added things to our salads and the lovely lovely waitress Ingrid was so accommodating… she made a fuss of my little boy and the whole experience was really good and I put this down to Ingrid who made it special! Ingrid is an absolute asset to the company we enjoyed it so much we coming again next week!!!!!!!!! We had such a lovely lunch all down to you Ingrid! You’re a special person!!!!!! ♥️

5 stars aren’t enough for the outstanding service received by Ingrida at the Iron Gate restaurant every single time you enter the building, she is a top tier waitress and never fails to amaze with the quality of the service provided. Hands down, the best waitress I’ve ever had. The food is also great especially when prepared by chef Neil, they have a nice variety of starters, mains and deserts, as well as all kinds of drinks. I love that the menu changes every so often so you’ll never get bored! Honestly, I would love to leave more than 5 stars as the food and service is outstanding.

Love this place. The building is beautiful inside and the staff are always great. Everything we ordered was delicious and as a gluten free, dairy free vegetarian it is a real treat to have choices on the menu. Kids happy too.

Visited yesterday lunchtime for our daughters birthday with 10 of her friends. Fantastic venue, great service (our waitress was brilliant) and excellent pizzas. What more do you need?!?

We booked here as wanted to grab some food before a gig we were going to with friends. Well our pizza wasn’t very ‘express’. It took one hour from placing our order to receiving our four pizzas. The pizzas were very nice but that is an unacceptable wait. At no point did they tell us there was a delay until we asked after 45 minutes when they said our pizzas were going in the oven in 7-8 minutes. They did knock a whole £6 off our £115 bill. Won’t be returning any time soon.

I just have a big issue with uber eats and just eat people standing around whilst people are eating their food, it isn't fair on people who spend good money on a night out and have people hanging around them who are not even spending money in there, it looks scruffy and very off putting

Disappointed. They advertised children's menu as it was a standard. It was not delivered. In addition l was charged more for 2 courses than l would have been foe the 3 courses advertised. When l enquired l was given a feeble excuse, something about allergies???

Came today for lunch with a friend had a lovely meal with lovely Service, couldn’t fault it . Cannelloni, lasagne, garlic doughballs . and lemon roulade were all delightful. Many thanks.

Not great this time. Very slow service and the pizza was ordinary and expensive. Polenta chips were good tho. My dining partners gluten free pizza was rather small ... used to be you took your own gf base and they only charged for the toppings.

Been to this pizza express many times, usually been the average service you’d expect, no major issues. Decided to go for a nice family meal mid-week, booked a table around 7.30 and arrived just before (approx 2min). The place was more than half empty, with 1 large party inside and a couple other tables. Our table was not ready for us on arrival and we were expected to wait with no apologies, even though 10+ tables were available. When finally seated the waitress shoved menus on the table by the door, asked if we had any allergies to which we replied no. We sat with a very clear draft over us as 6+ delivery drivers came in. Every driver got seen to before we were even approached - roughly 25 minutes waiting. The manager appeared to be standing behind the desk twiddling his thumbs! When finally seen to, they asked what we’d like to order - never once asked if we’d required different menus for dietary requirements, never offered drinks beforehand. When i stated i required a different menu the waitress, named Judith, then proceeded to argue that she had asked for any allergies beforehand. She seemed to be completely clueless to the fact that allergens and food limitations are completely different things - likely needs retraining, not just on that but also manners and customer service. After continuing to backchat, i stood up and left with my party in frustration. All it would have taken - an apology and a menu correction. There are plenty of other restaurants I go to that always ask for dietary requirements FIRST, and allergens second while taking our order. Hugely disappointed and i’ll never return, my family included. If you expect quality food AND service, like every restaurant should be, then avoid this pizza express.

Booked a pizza party for my 7 year olds birthday. All the kids had a great time, the staff (Peter, Autumn and Dennis) were really friendly, accommodating (with some of the fussier eaters) and helpful! We all had a great time and would definitely recommend!!

Visited today with friends, received a warm welcome, it wasn’t too busy, so we got a nice table by the window. our server was delightful we had lasagna cannelloni and pizza , with the portion of garlic doughballs , all delicious and served quickly . Great food, fabulous service . Many thanks.

From the second we walked in the door we were met with friendly staff who took care of our every need with a smile. The food was incredible and this was one of the best experiences I have ever had in a restaurant. Will 100% be coming back to this branch in the future and would recommend it to anybody.

A regular spot, close to the cathedral so good for combining with the music events there. Always a friendly welcome and good food

My waitress was very friendly and attentive. I didn’t think much of my pizza. The pizza was very sparsely topped even the passata. I paid extra for a topping and it was barely present. £20 for a pizza and a soft drink was too much for what was served.

I pop in here regularly on business trips. Good food and attentive staff. Keep up the good work

There were a number of starters out of stock but eventually they had a starter in stock. No problem this happens 45 mins later no starters . We ask how long our starters will be. We were told sorry we have a trainee chef on! I then noticed that no one in the restaurant had any food at their table. Trainee chef had no one alongside him, apart from the other kitchen assistant who was sitting at a table having a meal. The manager was oblivious to this as he was taking down Xmas decorations! We got up and left, free drinks were not good enough. This used to be a good restaurant.

Lovely place to visit. Wasn’t busy at all maybe because i went on boxing day evening?!. Anyway pizza was delicious but was lukewarm. Could’ve enjoyed it more if it was warm untill my last bite because as soon i ate my first slice rest was actually cold. My mates pizza was actually cold when served. A bit pricey though. Could lower a bit the prices maybe.

I’ve been here quite a few times over the years. The food is always consistently good (although I pretty much have the same thing every time so I can only really speak for the Calabrese pizza!). The main thing that gets me going back is the service - each and every time the staff have been amazing and really seem to go out of their way for you.

One restaurant I think you will leave satisfied and think money well spent was pizza express, NOT NOW! I usually love their bruschetta and really look forward to it. This time I got a cold bruschetta burnt with hardly any toppings on it. The other dish I always look forward to is chicken pesto pasta. I can’t believe what I got no pesto, you had to hunt for the chicken and pasta was just boiled pasta with so much cheap cheese in it. This use to be my safe restaurant where I would enjoy these dishes. They have saved on costs on expensive ingredients and it really shows in the dishes lack of flavour and are really poor.

What a lovely visit today with a wonderful, friendly, caring server who couldn’t do enough for us . We enjoyed garlic doughballs, tomatoes, cannelloni and a pasta dish with chicken and mushrooms, but I can’t remember the name!! Served quickly and piping hot fold. had a lovely Baileys coffee afterwards too really enjoyed our experience. Thank you so much.

Our server ‘Autumn’ was particularly pleasant, her customer service was above and beyond! Furthermore, both myself and my wife’s pizza were delicious!

Had a lovely meal this evening. Served by Autumn who was incredibly efficient and helpful. Lovely to have such a polite and attentive server. I ordered takeout as well to take back for my family and she made sure it was only cooked when I was almost ready to leave. The takeaway food was also delicious 😋

An all round wonderful experience, staff were very attentive particularly a lovely waitress called Autumn, food was amazing as was the service not to fast or slow between courses. The restaurant was clean, tidy and had a lovely atmosphere. I would definitely eat here again a lot nicer than the other pizza express in the Derbion which feels less intimate and you definitely feel rushed. A particular thank you to Autumn for being so attentive and for providing in depth knowledge of the menu (despite my picky partner) we both enjoyed our meal.

Staff went out of their way to get us a table ASAP when already busy, but did have quite a wait for food. Pizzas were nice, crispy, just a bit sparse on toppings. A lot of families dining made for a chaotic atmosphere!

Pizza express please improve your vegan options and prices not coming back again tbh it’s so expensive for sub-par pasta and my friend got the vegan Melazane and for £15 was aubergine and tomatoe sauce, no frills could’ve made the same meal for £3 at home and will next time an actual rip off !!

What to say... it's just all so mind-numbingly average. Except the drink prices, which are staggering, and not in a good way.

Awful service, barged out of the way by delivery drivers and their back packs, lgnored by staff too busy dealing with takeaways. Go to the derbion branch, the service is so much better than the shockingly poor service at the iron gate branch.

We went in on sep 18th 2023 (yesterday) for my sons 16th birthday. The host/waiter working at 3:30/4:00pm time did a fantastic job attending us so polite and a great positive attitude. Genuinely made our experience the best it possibly could be. The food was yummy and was prepared in a timely manner so compliments to the chef. We appreciated the lovely dessert tray that was prepared as a free surprise for my sons birthday such a kind gesture and made my son feel very special. We been here before always great service, lovely staff, great food and a beautiful venue. Highly recommend!!

Shown to our seats by a very pleasant server. Although a couple of pizza toppings were not available the substitutes were more than satisfactory. The food overall was was very good. Very pleased with this restaurant.

The food was amazing, Had to wait along time for food, when food arrived didn't put In front of us, very rude waitress and had to get to get our black pepper out selfs because not offered and napkins.

We have eaten at Pizza Express Irongate several times before but on Saturday evening were left bitterly disappointed. We were celebrating a friend's retirement, but our friend who had made the booking received a phone call approximately 10 minutes beforehand to say the reservation had been cancelled. When she said we were minutes away she was told the booking would, after all, be honoured. Even before we'd set foot in the restaurant we were apprehensive - not a good start to the evening. No explanation was offered for the attempted cancellation. We were shown to our table, at the back of the restaurant and ordered, and all seemed to be well. After eating our first course, we became aware that we were the only people left in the restaurant, and realised that all the staff had disappeared. When they reappeared, we were told they were having to close the restaurant, but when we asked why, were told regrettably they were unable to offer a reason. Bizarre! At this point a couple came into the restaurant, having arrived for their booked reservation, only to find a note on the door saying the restaurant was closed. The couple was not offered an explanation and were most unhappy. By this time any chance of a dessert and tea/coffee was out of the question, and although we were offered a discount off our meal we left very unhappy, having had our friend's retirement celebration completely ruined. I cannot understand why the reason for the restaurant closing could not be offered. We are sadly unlikely to return.

We’ve been to this restaurant many times and always had a good experience - not sure what was going on this time though…. We received a phone call ten minutes before our booked time stating that the restaurant was going to close early (this was before 7pm on a Saturday evening!) - as we were just about to walk through the door, they begrudgingly deigned to let us have our planned meal… All fine with the food - friendly and helpful waitress - but by the time we’d finished our main course at 8.30, we realised we were the only people left in the restaurant (not even any staff who’d all disappeared out the back door) - when they eventually reappeared, we asked what was going on, but no one was willing to explain other than that they had to close early - even the manager refused to give us an explanation - needless to say, by this point our idea of a nice relaxing evening had evaporated so we chose not to have desserts. I hope the staff enjoyed their evening off - I suspect they will be having many more if the management continue to treat their customers so shabbily (including a couple who hadn’t picked up their phone messages so had arrived for an 8.30pm booking only to be turned away!). Needless to say we won’t be returning…

We've always enjoyed Pizza Express, but our visit to this branch opposite the cathedral in Derby was lovely. The staff were excellent, making menu suggestions so we didn't spend money unnessarily. The food as always was tasty.

Oh Pizza Express, what happened? We used to spend a regular lunch time here, interacting with friendly staff and enjoying good food. Haven't been for a while and found the staff standoffish, seemed like the friendly atmosphere has gone. My Sloppy Giuseppe was much less loaded than they used to be. I think the chef had completely forgotten the lemon in my Sicilian Lemon & White Chocolate Roulade - it was just meringue. Maybe this was a one-off - we'll go back sometime.

My daughter likes to go here each year for her birthday. Tonight was a great disappointment as the customer service was terrible. It wasn't the waitresses fault who were working really hard but the priority seemed to be the delivery service with the majority of food coming out going in boxes leaving a restaurant full of grumpy customers. They obviously did not have enough staff to provide a restaurant and delivery service. If they continue like this they will lose a lot of customers.

I recently visited pizza express in iron gate derby and what a nice place to eat the 2meals we ordered was very nice BUT the extra portion of chips that I ordered polenta chips and I think there was about 8 of them came to £5.95 and 330 ML of PERONI CAME TO £4.95 that is almost £10 a pint WOW WHAT A RIP OFF ............NOT GOING BACK.......SORRY.

We chose Pizza Express Derby for our daughters 6th birthday meal as it is a popular pizza chain with locations all over the world. I have heard that they are well-known for their high-quality ingredients and delicious pizzas. Quite far from what an Italian Pizza Concept is! As a Pizza restaurant Chain I would expect much much more! You should review your Chef (pizzaiolo) and work more on your product and pricing. Sorry but it has been a very bad experience...

We had dinner here at the weekend. The staff were friendly and the food was good but we were seated under a very bright light, which made it a little uncomfortable during our meal. I also wasn't warned about one of the dishes being hot and I burned my finger quite badly on it. Fair enough, I probably should have realised it might be but after a long drive and being used to being told if a dish is hot, I just didn't think. The food was lovely but it was fairly busy so service received was reasonably minimal. We also asked about a 2 course for 2 offer on my app but nobody pointed out it's a very limited offering so we ended up ordering things that weren't actually on there. It would have been nice to have been made aware that we had to order specific things or that the things we had ordered were not eligible for the offer we had said we wanted to use. We aren't local to the area but should we visit there again, we will likely try somewhere else instead next time.

Not great. The food was ok but expected better flavours. Portion size was smaller than expected on the pasta dish, so if going in an evening, you may want to order something more substantial.

We had a great evening at Pizza Express Iron Gate Derby. We were sat in the window table - a distance from the servers - so a couple of times we had to get up to get their attention, but nothing too bad. It was busy and our kids both ordered amended versions of things to complicate our order. One arrived correctly, the other did not, but it was rectified as quickly as possible. Our server (Jas) was so lovely, with a great sense of humour and even helped us make it look like we'd eaten the others' desserts when they went to the bathroom!! It was very funny!! The food was delicious and all four of us ate everything (pretty unusual). This will definitely become a family favourite. Great evening.

The first in Derby and still the best.

I havnt been to Pizza express in a very long time, especially this one. It’s definitely had a makeover since my last visit. The interior is beautiful, with a perfect ambiance for any occasion. Situated in Derby, Iron Gate, surrounded by ample parking. We parked behind the Cathedral. (£2 all evening). A great location. We hadn’t booked a table in advance due to circumstances but the staff managed to fit us in reasonably quick. Customer service was ok, but there’s definitely room for improvement. We got seated pretty quick but it took a while to get served, even for drinks. They were reasonably busy but not fully booked. Eventually our drinks and food order was taken, we applied for the FREE dough balls through the app. (This is a MUST). The dough balls are delicious! The Menu had been revamped and there were many more options than I remembered. I went for one of the new options, ‘Paneer Tikka’ and it 💯% worth the wait. It was Devine! Absolutely Beautiful! Compliments to the chef on that one. Drinks were great too. We also used the ‘Buy 1 get one Free’ option on the app so got a very good deal and discount. My kinda language. All in all, a good experience, the staff need to smile more and the Boss needs to be more attentive to customers as opposed to concentrating on his ‘drink’ he was constantly reaching for. Thank you for the opportunity and experience. 💫

Had to pay a visit to a different Pizza Express whilst in Derby. The restaurant itself is up towards the cathedral and in an older building. Service was quick and efficient and the restaurant itself was moderately busy. Food was usual good standard and arrived quickly and as ordered (unlike you Aberdeen Union Square branch….) Definitely worth a visit if you’re in town and want a pizza - Pizza Express is still pretty much the best chain in town when it comes to the quality and taste of their pizzas.

First time visiting this branch for quite a few years. We ordered : Dough Balls, Mushroom arancini, Mushroom Pizza and the Vegetarian Calzone. Lots of new options on the menu which was great to see however even though we asked for all our food to arrive at the same time, only one of the four dishes was hot, the rest were lukewarm and the mushroom pizza was cold within 5 minutes which was very disappointing. This was also stated by my partner so wasn't just my opinion. The Calzone wasn't pressed together on the sides enough either, which meant all the ingredients leaked out when cutting. As we used a voucher we didn't think it was appropriate to complain when asked how it was and we had plans afterwards so it's not like we could have waited for a new batch to be cut The place was clean and also had toilets which was great, the staff were also nice, it was a great location for the Derby Feste but not sure I will return due to the temperature of the food.
