We wanted something to eat not far from the AO arena and as pie lovers thought this fitted the bill. I booked online so we had a table but there were plenty available had we just walked in. The staff were friendly and the steak & ale pie we had didn't disappoint. They have happy hour on select drinks 4-7 Mon to Fri and we were told show all the main sporting events which is a crowd pleaser. It was quiet when we visited, probably due to it's location, tucked away in a quiet back street, if you are in the vicinity it's worth a visit

Faultless, great ale selection and well kept, fantastic food, just the right level of ambience banging tunes, but not in your face, booths to hide in, immaculate toilets, friendly staff, without being over bearing. Seriously, couldn’t fault it -fab! Loaded nachos, pig in blanket hot dog and loaded roast potatoes with chilli were consumed with (we’re only staying for one!) 4 very decent pints of well kept ale. We will definitely be back well done guys. Keep it up. Front door hard to find, but I’m glad because once you find it, you won’t want to leave x

Well, this is no pie and mash place, as I have eaten at in London; and in Oldham when we had pie and mash as supper playing darts, provided by the landlady of the Shepherd's Boy in Oldham [Lancashire] in 1969. So, we were in at lunchtime, and the offer was £9.95 for a pie and a pint. The beer was great but we did not eat, my Down son and I. It is a cold warehouse, in sense that the ceilings are very high and being down a side alley is not sunlit! Same in the Summer? In the evening I had the three cheese and potato pie; well I presume there were three cheeses, but goat's cheese seemed to dominate. The few pieces of potato were undercooked, that id HARD! Response from unsmiling waitress when I told her: "I'll tell 'em." No offer of refund. My son who had pie and mash, though we had not ordered mash, but roast spuds, as chip are verboten! He enjoyed his bacon and chicken etc pie. The roast spuds were cold. Only one member of staff that we actually interlocuted with, was friendly. The others did not speak or were reticent, If you go wear plenty of insulating garments!!!!!

After being seated for about 20 minutes our order was taken. We were told that there'd be a longer wait than usual for food, about 30 minutes. That was fine; we were a large group and not in too much of a hurry. But 45 minutes passed and food hadn't arrived. Food arrived around 50 minutes after ordering. The pie arrived with a dollop of mash on top - not how I'd serve it but that seems to be their thing. The pie crust was extremely hard, at times I thought I was actually trying to cut through the plate by accident. Not sure if the pastry had been overworked or not enough fat in the mix. Filling was OK. Peas (extra charge) seemed under seasoned. We also ordered chicken wings, which had been boiled but not finished off on the grill, so a bit of a mess with the sauce on top. Perhaps that's the way they do them. All in all, food was at best average and quite pricey considering.

Overall a really good experience. Lovely steak and ale pie, (a little burned in places, but not really noticeable in the taste), good mash, great pigs in blankets, and an ok cheesecake for dessert. It didn't feel like an actual New York cheesecake, but it was nice enough. The only thing that bugged me was the 10% mandatory service charge that we weren't made aware of until the bill arrived. Normally, when we go out, we would tip 15% for an average service, and 20% for good service. However, because it bugged me about the service charge being mandatory, I didn't tip extra. I feel we should have been made aware of this at some point during the meal - either on the menu, or from the server, but we weren't.

I recommend giving it a try. I did not expect a chicken pie to be like this! It is nice that the chicken is not coated by oily white source, but the chicken is marinaded. So far, the pies I had were all white cream with plain chicken, but this one is in a reverse way. They did well on the chicken meat. The pie wall was also hard enough that the juicy did not split everywhere. You can image the texture. Having such quality at the city center with this price is totally worth it. I put a 4 star here because the curry coat pie my wife had was not spicy enough, may be they remove the chill to address more customers. But I can smell they put good enough amout of spice there. The mash is also good. I can taste potato sweetness instead of loads of butter in other restaurants. The service there is friendly and quick.

Excellent reception when we said we'd booked online. Extremely good/quick service - we were going to a show after and when we asked for the bill, we got it within seconds; something other restaurants should learn to do. The food was decently priced, but the steak & ale pie . . . OK, made in-house is lovely, but borrow an idea from Japan. Go buy a steak and ale pie from Greenhalgh's bakers and reverse engineer it so you can make it. It's better than yours and sometimes you just have to admit it and learn. Plus side, great mash, good gravy, and a brilliant Yorkshire pudding (they can so often be chewy & dull).

Parched and starving, struggling to barely function, blistered from the heat, we saw it. A small sign, an A frame chalk board full of amazing insights, it simply said "PIE+ALE" and underneath it there was an arrow pointing to the right. Overwhelmed by this flurry of information and our general condition at this point, we stood still for several minutes. Our eyes opened wide, we had our Uerika moment, we both loved PIE... and ALE!!! Like a shot we raced towards the establishment. The sign did not lie, there was both savoury pastry goods and fermented vegetable liquids served cold in pint glasses. Amazing pies, amazing beer, awesome staff. Absolute gem of a place tucked away. Keep you eye out for it.

It has a great beer hall with big screens for all the big games or a smaller bar room next door and an upstairs so its bigger than you think. The bar staff are always on the ball and best of all is the drinks selection with real ale Erdinger and (hard to find) Hoegaarden on tap along with all the usual brands. The outside space can be a bit dark and a wind tunnel and gets no sun but still a great place to go.

Have been coming back to pie and ale for 4 years. It never fails to disappoint. Perfect for a Saturday watching sport with pints and pies. Vegan options are amazing too.

We’ve been going to pie and ale for years and it has always been one of our favourite spots. Unfortunately the menu has changed, and not for the better. Today we had the vegan Sunday roast pie. This was a small square of puff pastry, topped with a single roasted carrot and mash. On the menu this meal was stated to come with a nut roast (which we didn’t get) creamed leaks (which we didn’t get) vegan stuffing balls (came with only one), and a vegan Yorkshire pudding (which was a flat undercooked pancake). Essentially we paid £10 for a slice of puff pastry with carrot and mash. It was really sad to see the lack of effort in the meal when we have loved this place in the past. On the plus side, the mash was lovely and the beer selection was nice.

This restaurant located at the Hive in Manchester offers traditional English pubfood. The food is decent but nothing more and there are other options in Machester if you are looking for English pubfood.

This was the best food we had in our weekend in Manchester. Really imaginative menu & interesting flavours. The staff were really friendly as well, and made our dog very welcome. Lovely evening and would definitely recommend

Traditional style pub on the bank of the canal with a distinctly countryside feel to it. Big terrace and 2 floors of indoor seating, plus a huge bar, offering a good selection of ales (incl. hand pulled) and usually fast / efficient service. Food is traditional pub fare, looks great for omnivores but a bit limited for vegans. Also it’s dog friendly. All in all, one of the best pubs in the city. Just tried the vegan Sunday (nut) roast today. Decent, but a bit sparse on vegetables for £20 (incl. service charge). Shame, this great pub lets itself down on food, certainly on the vegan dishes we have tried.

Beautiful, very elegant and chosen decoration. Menu of sufficient dishes. I loved the fish and chips, nothing like other places. Good wine list and exquisite desserts. Very friendly and attentive service.

This fish and chip restaurant has changed its name to ANCHORS but everything else is as good as it has always been. The staff are really friendly and helpful and the fish and chips are the best I’ve ever had.
