What can I say! We thought we were going to Penny’s for breakfast which turned out to be lunch from order to service 1hr 15 mins!!. later during the wait we were told the group after us were being served before us with no apology when the food finally arrived 1hr 15mins later ( I have to say it again) we were given orders we didn’t ask for and extra bacon promised didn’t arrived we did not ask for it as we were only in York for the day. Safe to say we won’t return. Having a small kitchen is not the customers fault and needless to say they wanted to charge us wait for it !!! £60+ for 4 breakfasts and 4 coffees. Unless you have time to spare I don’t recommend it.

The boyfriend chose this in advance of our trip to York as it was dog-friendly, with a vegetarian choice for me and it was simply lovely. Penny (the chef) and the gentlemen serving were both really friendly. I had a delicious homemade quinoa and bean burger with sweet potato fries and a big serving of coleslaw, and boyfriend had meat chilli with rice and nachos he was very happy with, and a good coffee too. It's small, probably only seats about 14, but if you can get in I'm sure you'll be glad you did. Oh, and a big thumbs up for playing 6 Music too.

I went there for breakfast and ended up having lunch. Cas and Penny are the most homely people I’ve met in York. Lovely place. Amazing food. Please, get there quick.

I came to Penny’s for Breakfast and I cannot fault anything at all, The service was impeccable and Cas the young man serving was wonderful he listened and offered so many options we were spoilt for choice The menu is a smorgasbord of delights all made fresh none of the warmed up microwave stuff you get in many places nowadays The food was cooked to perfection and the service impeccable, I will definitely visit again, not just for the amazing food but the customer service was second to none Penny’s is a gem we will most definitely visit again and again, I highly recommend you try this place Thankyou again for the best breakfast we have ever had and such wonderful service ❤️

Had a weekend in York and goggled English breakfast and this is the first that came up. Well what can I say! what an amazing find! we both had a full English breakfast but were asked how we would like our bacon and eggs cooked! The to top it off how we wanted our coffee - as I am one of thse that doesn't like it strong this was amazing. I have never been asked that before and it was a real treat. The young man serving was sooooo helpful but not intrusive, he was very happy to answer questions re York and give any directions. I would not hesitate going back here when I'm in York and I can highly recommend it for breakfast

We felt so lucky to come across this wonderful little place, I really did think the veggie breakfast was the best I have ever had, with attention to detail and fresh ingredients, it was perfect. The meat version was just as great. If we are in York again, we will make a point of coming back for a friendly chat and really attentive service, Thank You Very Much!

Brilliant meat and veggie full English breakfasts. The service is exceptional as we were asked how we wanted our coffee (strong, not too strong etc) how we wanted our fried eggs cooked and how crispy we wanted our bacon. It's a lovely little cafe in a slightly quieter part of Central York with very friendly staff.

Found this gem on Walmgate. Looked through the window to see a warm & welcoming eatery full of bespoke decorations and a lovely welcome from Cas & his mum Penny. Oh, & the full breakfast was so good we went back the following day for more of the same. The anniversary brownies were unexpected & so tasty. Fully recommend a visit.

What a charming family owned cafe in the heart of York, my girlfriend and I visited here today and were greeted by the lovely polite and courteous staff, we ordered two full English breakfasts and the portion sizes were decent, made using fresh ingredients and were beautifully cooked. We would definitely come back again, excellent value for money and stunning food in a charming little cozy setting. Thanks guys!

What can I say? Well I've been visiting York now for over a decade and this is the first time I've been to Penny's - My partner and I dropped in as we passed (just after opening) and without no hessitation Cas was a true gentleman and had our food and drinks on our table in no time! Consideration to the food prep was second to none, they had it cooked to ordered to our perfection! Loved the decor too! (I'm a classic comic fan so seeing the Marvel piece on the wall made us smile and sparked a nice convo with Cas, your a true gent). Thank you Penny & Cas for the lovely food and service. We discovered Penny's a few years ago, and thought it was such a nice, friendly cafe. I made a solo visit to York recently, and was very pleased to see Penny's had survived the Pandemic. It's as friendly, and fairly-priced, as ever, and the menu is great, with lots of vegan options, alongside regular food items. It's always great to visit Penny's, and it's my favourite York cafe.

My housemate and I come here every week without fail for the all day breakfast and will undoubtedly continue to do so. The cost of living crisis is bleak but here things seem warm again; Cas and Penny are super friendly and ready to hear out any story and the service is brilliant. A favourite haunt in York.

Simply the best cafe in York. Penny and Cas are friendly, down to earth and welcoming. Very reasonably priced and good quality food. A great selection of food and drink choices too. I often go most weekends and highly recommend to anyone considering a visit. Whether solo or in a group, it's a great space for all!

My husband and I stayed overnight in York and came here for our breakfast the following morning. The café is small but quaint. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. We had breakfast three times at Penny’s while staying at a nearby hotel. Well done times three! The owner and staff are very friendly and welcoming. And the fresh homemade baked goods are fabulous. We highly recommend the flapjacks, made nightly by the owner. A lovely place indeed.

Fantastic is over used these days but on this occasion it doesn’t really cover it.

I made a reservation for a party of 8 a few weeks in advance of our visit because we only had limited time in York on our way from London to Edinburgh. Communication through Facebook messenger was easy. When we missed our train and had to catch one an hour later, I sent a message asking if we could move our reservation, and they did. When we were late arriving for our rescheduled reservation our table for 8 (which was half of the restaurant's seating!) was still waiting for us. Talk about wonderful customer service! And then there was the food. It was a bit of a wait after we ordered, but since everything is homemade that's to be expected. And it was definitely worth the wait!! We took some desserts with us and they were all eaten before we got off the train in Edinburgh! I'd much rather support a small family run business than a big chain, and if we ever make it to York again I will definitely visit Penny's! Thank you for a delicious meal and for your patience with our big late group!

We had sandwiches and 1 orange juice, which cost £11.70, was very average and we thought expensive for what it was, it is a tiny place, but the staff were very friendly and accommodating.

First of all let me say this. The food was very nice. The place is busy and popular with locals ( always a good sign ). The staff were friendly and smiley. We just expected a bit more for our money I think. We ordered a bacon omelette, jacket potato with chilli and cheese and pot of tea for two. The total cost was £13.80. Not too bad, especially for York which has some very expensive places to eat. I think we were just slightly underwhelmed. Maybe, after reading this site, our expectations were too high. My other half said her jacket spud was lovely but the chilli barely covered it. My omelette was very nice but I assumed, wrongly, it would come with something. It had a handful of spinach leaves yes but I thought maybe some bread or toast or even a side salad may accompany it. Effectively I paid £6 for a couple of eggs and a rasher of bacon. As I said though, it did taste very nice indeed. We planned to buy some of the lovely cakes and/or savouries you see on here or their Facebook page but sadly all that was in the display cabinet was chocolate brownies. Others have mentioned the speed and service but considering how busy they can be I think they do well. Sorry for a couple of grumbles, I hate being negative, but I probably expected more than I got.

We decided the hotel indigo's breakfast prices were exorbitant and found this a short step away having looked on trip advisor. Friendly with super food and reasonable prices. The breakfast in a bun- the bun is big! Never dared try the full English! Lovely coffee.

Vinimos aquí cada mañana para el desayuno inglés completo para las 3 mañanas que estuvimos en Nueva York, y no puedo alabar este lugar. Todo el personal era muy acogedor y nada era demasiado problema. La comida era excelente, y vino a nuestra mesa bien presentada y caliente y no grasienta. Todo el menú sonaba muy sugerente así que cuando volvamos de nuevo sin probar algo más. Había un montón de gente tener comida para llevar, de camino a su trabajo supongo. El lugar es muy limpio y hay calentadores de golpe si siente un poco de frío, pero nos pareció que no los necesitamos, aunque estaba muy frío afuera. Recomendaríamos este lugar a cualquiera que quiera una excelente comida y servicio y es de un par de Birmingham que son bastante quisquillosos. Volveremos y gracias a todo el personal.

Visitamos este café siguiendo la recomendación por el taxista nos lleva a nuestro hotel. El interior es básico pero limpio. El ambiente era agradable y relajado, con un montón de clientes habituales volver para el almuerzo y comida para llevar. Elegimos sopa y panini fueron muy, muy, muy buena relación calidad-precio. La sopa era abundante, lleno de sabor y bien caliente. El panini's se desbordaban con rellenos deliciosos platos calientes. Nos sentimos como miembros de la comunidad local como en todo el mundo, incluyendo el personal, eran muy amables. Mi único consejo sería para el miembro del personal que tiene una gran abundancia de pelo hermoso, por favor intente atar todo atrás, ya que aunque se han intentado amarrar atrás - todavía hay mucho suelto, que colgar siga ejecutando sus manos a través de capítulos, comiendo detrás de usted y luego tocar comida orejas. No creo que son conscientes de que lo están haciendo. Pero a pesar de eso, volvería.
