No volveré.

We stopped off for Afternoon Tea as we had been here visiting The Hive and Gardens. Kew doesn't not disappoint for a day out Lots of floral and fauna plenty of toilets and areas marked for walking. The planes fly low over here. After three hours we stopped off for a much needed brew. Cappuccino £2.80 and a selection of cakes for 3 £10. Not much to right home about but they filled a gap. A Garden Section off the Café with lot of plants and flowers and a shop selling all manner of things for all the Tourists visiting. Once a year is enough for me.

If the typical mark up applied to the food was applied to hot drinks, a cappuccino would probably be £7.50 - they can't get away with that, but they can get away with £3.00 for a coke and £9 plus for basic sandwiches. Stay well away, and Peyton and Byrne should be extinguished as a cynical price-gouging business.

We attended the Summer Exhibition and then went to the courtyard for a sandwich and coffee. The temperature was in the mid/high 20's but most of the filled rolls and cakes/ pastries were displayed without any cover other than that provided by the flies swarming over the items. I challenged the most senior looking staff member who said that Oliver Peyton does not allow displays to be covered and if she were to do so (which she knew she should) it would probably be more than her job is worth.. If a local café maintained such standards it would be closed down immediately so why should a pretentious overpriced sandwich bar be treated any differently? I am going to make a formal complaint to Westminster City Council and to the RA. I hope others will follow.

I visited the bar with a colleague during a Royal Academy Friends events. I was told by the Peyton & Byrne staff that, as a Friend, we could take advantage of their 2-for-1 drinks offer on the specific order we made. When we came to pay we were charged double the amount (ie. full price): almost £30 for two gin and tonics. I complained in writing and was referred on to Peyton & Byrne customer complaints. Their response only compounded the issue - they said not only should we have taken the drinks elsewhere to be eligible for the offer (a point not made clear when we were served) but the particular drinks we bought didn't qualify. I wrote back again to question this but received no further response. Seems to be a clear case of Peyton & Byrne putting profit before customer care. Don't go there unless you're sure you're not being conned!

This restaurant is in the basement of the Royal Academy. I believe it to be fairly new. Certainly not well signposted within the building. The dark green decor is very cosy and restful after a morning walking round an exhibiton of paintings. There is a fixed price menu -two or three courses or a la carte.I had Dover sole and it was excellent and reasonably priced. Not impressed that my friend had booked a table by phone only to find that they did not have our booking. However, a table was found for us. It was busy, so booking essential. The service was good until we ordered coffee, chased them afer ten minutes and still not come after another 15 minutes. They knocked the price off the bill. I would definitely go again.

The Elan cafe is a nice place to have a quick drink or small cakes with friends, however it is a bit smaller compared to the others. but the scenery is lovely and pretty.
