Overall, it's difficult to find really good food in Scotland. We were impressed by the reviews and were really looking forward to it. Assuming that the French bring something with them from their homeland and that there is something other than fish and chips and fried food. The first was that we were placed in a basement room which had a good overall atmosphere, but unfortunately you could smell the toilet very strongly. The service was very attentive and as always there was free water. We were disappointed when we ate: there were no mushrooms or bacon in the Coq au vin (which was even on the menu), and the vegetables that came with it were apparently seasoned with garlic powder, which left a very unpleasant taste. The chicken itself was very tender. We suspected that the sauce was a convenience product. Overall we were rather disappointed.

Truly a superb dining experience in this small restaurant on the grass market. The ambiance is just beautiful with small rooms in this ancient building. The walls are stone but they have been whitewashed beautifully and then hung with fin de cicle French advertising posters. The service was impeccable without being clingy. They have a short but very nice wine list. We went with the red table wine (house wine) and it was very good. If you are there for lunch or before 7 pm they an excellent play du jour special. We were there later so we started with the escargot. Very good version of this dish and came out piping hot served with a very good baguette (what else do you expect at a French restaurant?). I had the salmon in a fume blanc sauce with crayfish. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the sauce was excellent. Both dishes came with very very good potatoes. The wife had a sea bass which was served with veggies, olives and balsamic reduction l. Truly amazing. They have a very nice list of desert and after diner wines (sauterne anyone ?) as well as aperitifs. But we were just too full as the portions were very filling. This is a gem of a restaurant. Highly recommend

Having walked past the little restaurant so many times I finally got round to booking for a pre theatre dinner. Very good choice. My husband started with the black pudding ( which he said was fabulous) followed by the ribeye steak as a main, followed by paris brest. I decided to choose from the pre theatre menu, which was very good value. I had garlic langoustines, which tasted so good, followed by the quiche of the day & coffee. We both had the house red wine. Very good service & an enjoyable meal. A restaurant to return to.

Delightful and rustic I came here for a delicious light lunch. The food wasn't super fancy, but it was tasty, simple and not too expensive. Looking over at other tables some of the mains looked fantastic as well, on another hungier day I'd definitely like to try some of them. French onion soup, 7/10, certainly not the tastiest onion soup I've tried, the onions could have been a bit better caramelised, the texture somewhat thicker, but overall it was tasty, hearty, cheap and cheerful. Special mention to the bread, good crusty and chewy kind, great butter - not to mention free, which always makes me happy Chocolate tart, 8/10, lovely rich eggy tart with a beautiful deep chocolate flavour. They must use the same chocolate as L'escagot Bleu (Callebaut 70%, I asked) because it tasted just the same. A coarser recipe, for sure, but it was also less than half the price, so can't complain. The real egg custard on the side was delicious too. Overall this is a lovely little place and well worth the visit. If you come late afternoon like I did you might get away without booking, but it does get busy in the evening with bookings. Wait staff are lovely and welcoming. An all around good time.

Came here for a special one-off couples dinner and chose the Steak and Coq au Vin and honestly it was the best we’ve ever eaten. Clearly amazing chefs, great quality produce and lovely staff. Yes it is tight on space but that adds to the charm - and we were seated in the extra space downstairs where it was more roomy, but next time we’ll try upstairs just for the different ambience - either way, you can’t go wrong with Petit Paris - SUCH a gem 💎

With a very warm and friendly atmosphere, I was welcomed like an old friend who'd just popped by. The starters, French onion soup, immediately made me feel jealous of anyone whose maman might have made them this on a cold night. Not the incipit attempts find in British restaurants, but real, thick, warm, hearty French stuff. The mains, beef bourguignon, was again, delicious. Served in a red hot crock pot, the perfectly cooked pieces of beef, swimming in heartwarming gravy, melted on the tongue. Apparently there are restaurants to be found in France itself which do better. But none here. My dessert was crêpes with Grand Marnier. Warm, light and swimming with liqueur. To finish, rather than my traditional espresso, I went for a Calvados. The typical brandy nose was finished with an immediate transportation to the orchards of Normandy. Not too much of a kick, but a gentle hint of apples. You couldn't do much better on a cold Edinburgh night than warm your insides with a trip to France, in a warm, rustic, rural restaurant on the Grassmarket.

I’m French and have been to quite a few restaurants in France, but "Le Petit Paris" is probably the best French restaurant I have ever tasted in my entire life and easily the best restaurant in Edinburgh. My girlfriend and I were so amazed at how good it was that we decided to dine there twice during our 3-day trip to Scotland. Believe it or not, the second time was even better! ! Hallelujah, finally, I have managed to eat decently, in the United Kingdom, more specifically in Edinburgh! We ordered some mussels in a sauce with blue cheese, which were to die for, and we also ordered a Scottish blood sausage with a heart-stopping mustard. For the second we ordered a salmon that was very well done in a sauce made with white butter and chives that was delicious and the pepper entrecote, accompanied with some baked potatoes that were 10. To finish off the meal, a creme brule with vanilla that we have never eaten before, not even in Paris. Highly recommended if you go to the Grass Market If you liked the comment, follow me or hit like

(TL;DR not a horrible experience, but definitely a tourist trap) Very attentive staff, but the food was unfortunately quite unimpressive. I stopped here for a Saturday lunch right as it opened, so I was fortunately able to snag a spot (the place was completely full within ten minutes - a combination of walk-ins and reservations). I was looking to try the escargot and then also got the French onion soup at the server's suggestion. The food actually came out pretty quickly (there was complimentary bread and butter as well), which was a pleasant surprise. Thoughts on the french onion soup: - The extremely mild (mild as in plain, not delicate) flavor of the soup was easily overpowered by the roughly chopped parsley used for garnish; the initial soup otherwise simply tasted like boiled onions... not caramelized - The textures of the soggy baguette and clump of melted cheese also did not mesh well with the whole of the soup; this may have been better if the serving bowl wasn't as wide Escargot - I can't say much about the taste or quality of the snails because I've never had any before, but the garlic butter sauce was honestly quite flat; it tasted only of strong garlic, salt, and butter, and lacked any sort of additional depth or dimension. So much for the vibrant green color... - On the bright side, the presentation of the dish was quite cute! I'd suggest anyone visiting to try some other options on the menu, because I'm convinced there's got to be tastier stuff, surely...

Top address for good, inexpensive food. We were there for dinner and were completely satisfied. The waiters were very attentive and always available immediately. We were immediately offered the typical free tap water. Free bread with butter was served before the main course. The waiters kept checking to see if we wanted anything else and looked after us well. Even when our bread basket was empty, they immediately offered to bring us more. In addition to the normal menu, daily specials are offered at reasonable prices between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. You can order a main course including a coffee for 13.90GBP or even with a starter for 19.90GBP at a fixed price. I chose the Roast Chicken (offer without starter) and I have to say it was very good. The chicken breast was tender, the potatoes were crispy and the mushroom sauce was delicious. The normal a la menu meals were also plentiful and very tasty. The pumpkin soup (starter) tasted as good as home and the salmon was also great. If you decide on the daily special offer, there is a black board on the wall that you can look at, as clearly described on the menu. (see photo) Conclusion: Very good service and good price/performance ratio for delicious food.

Even at the busy festival season in Edinburgh in August this is a great dependable French restaurant worth the walk down to the Grassmarket. We generally like to eat inside so you may have to wait for a table inside, but plenty of tables outside. Good range of options on the menu and good specials. Waiting staff are friendly, helpful and attentive, and you can practice speaking French to most of the staff who are clearly fluent French speakers. Average Edinburgh prices for both lunch and dinner. Only downside is that the drinks and wine by the glass can be a little hit and miss in terms of quality. Our sparking wine kir royal was flat, not a bubble in sight! Nevertheless, well worth a visit for both the French food and French atmosphere.

This place is the textbook definition of a tourist trap. They’re clearly not interested in repeat business, which became obvious when they tacked on a sneaky 10% "discretionary service charge" that I only discovered when the bill arrived. The waitress curtly pointed out that it was mentioned on the menu, buried in fine print at the bottom. This isn’t how you build a loyal customer base with quality service and outstanding food. Bottom line: steer clear and find a better spot off the beaten path. Having lived in Paris for two years, I can tell you this place barely scratches the surface of real French cuisine.

Le petit français propose des plats français revisités version british ou sous vide, bref on est très loin de la gastronomie, tout est dans la nappe à carreaux, la vaisselle, l'accueil sympa, la déco "french"... c'est copieux, ça nourrit point !

We are students in Edinburgh and have had many top notch food here in this beautiful peace and dynamic city. But this one just let us “speechless”. It is just like some rain drop into a muddy meadow. We order a roast chicken and steamed mussels. But the roast chicken was just like an old widow who didn’t shower for a month, and the steam mussels were not fresh at all. And more funny thing is that they use water bottles to give us a “ bottle” of wine!? My partner plays their menu, one of my dear witnesses took it away behind her back. I don’t think it’s polite for a “polite” Europe restaurant. But that’s the meaning and concrete details of European middle class flavour table manner. Normative. Though if the food is not delicious and carefully made then such delicate table manners is meaningless . What a shame

Notice to the French: it is not specified when you are served a coffee that it is an Americano and not a coffee even though it is sold as such. Damage … The kitchen is good

Top marks for a top place. A lovely environment in which to relax and eat with really attentive staff eager to make your evening memorable. Great prices, fabulous food, nice decor and the perfect atmospheric buzz meant our meal was much more than that and I can't recommend a visit here strongly enough. Definitely a valuable part of what makes Grassmarket vibrant and special.

French restaurant. The quantities are generous. We only took starters because we weren't really hungry and the quantity was perfect. The food is good and served quickly.

We had our anniversary dinner here a while back. Drinks and food were all spot on. Had to leave early after getting a call from babysitter but they kindly put the petit fours in a lovely box that didn’t look like a takeaway box and I like details like.

The rooms a wonderful. Decadent, French feel. Lay out of hotel is on point. Feel some of the staff could be friendlier.

Hi everyone, we were guests at the Maison Blu restaurant in Edinburgh… I recommend the restaurant 100%, believe me, you eat really well… and what is really absurd is that it is not in line with the prices… in addition to paying little, the cuisine is more than excellent… Edinburgh for us Europeans is an expensive city… and the restaurant prices are in line with our prices… Ignazio was really kind from the welcome to the end of our stay… the restaurant is next to the Harry Potter museum… thanks again for everything!
