Petit Paris in Edinburgh, City of

Me and some friends who have been trying to learn French came here for a French night! I explained to the waiter we were trying to learn French and if we could try there - they could not have been more helpful and supportive of us! The food and wine were absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the coq au vin, Camembert and chocolate tart. Our waitress, Ophélie, was so lovely and kind to us. Thank you for an amazing night! We will definitely be back again soon 🇫🇷

Very attentive staff, but the food was unfortunately quite unimpressive. I stopped here for a Saturday lunch right as it opened, so I was fortunately able to snag a spot (the place was completely full within ten minutes - a combination of walk-ins and reservations). I was looking to try the escargot and then also got the French onion soup at the server's suggestion. The food actually came out pretty quickly (there was complimentary bread and butter as well), which was a pleasant surprise. Thoughts on the french onion soup: - The extremely mild (mild as in plain, not delicate) flavor of the soup was easily overpowered by the roughly chopped parsley used for garnish; the initial soup otherwise simply tasted like boiled onions... not caramelized - The textures of the soggy baguette and clump of melted cheese also did not mesh well with the whole of the soup; this may have been better if the serving bowl wasn't as wide Escargot - I can't say much about the taste or quality of the snails because I've never had any before, but the garlic butter sauce was honestly quite flat; it tasted only of strong garlic, salt, and butter, and lacked any sort of additional depth or dimension. So much for the vibrant green color... - On the bright side, the presentation of the dish was quite cute! I'd suggest anyone visiting to try some other options on the menu, because I'm convinced there's got to be tastier stuff!

Top address for good, inexpensive food. We were there for dinner and were completely satisfied. The waiters were very attentive and always available immediately. We were immediately offered the typical free tap water. Free bread with butter was served before the main course. The waiters kept checking to see if we wanted anything else and looked after us well. Even when our bread basket was empty, they immediately offered to bring us more. In addition to the normal menu, daily specials are offered at reasonable prices between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. You can order a main course including a coffee for 13.90GBP or even with a starter for 19.90GBP at a fixed price. I chose the Roast Chicken (offer without starter) and I have to say it was very good. The chicken breast was tender, the potatoes were crispy and the mushroom sauce was delicious. The normal a la menu meals were also plentiful and very tasty. The pumpkin soup (starter) tasted as good as home and the salmon was also great. If you decide on the daily special offer, there is a black board on the wall that you can look at, as clearly described on the menu. (see photo) Conclusion: Very good service and good price/performance ratio for delicious food.

Small French restaurant found by chance while walking through the streets of Edinburgh. In addition to the à la carte menu, they offer (from 12pm - 3pm and from 5pm - 7pm) the possibility to choose at reasonable prices: 1 course + coffee or 2 courses + coffee, choosing from the dishes on the blackboards outside the restaurant. Absolutely try the traditional onion soup! More than reasonable prices: 2 courses + coffee for £19.90 and generous portions. Really friendly and welcoming staff. Advised!!! (October 2024)

Mediocre experience. Very limited wine by the glass which was surprising for a French restaurant. Food was decent but not great. Atmosphere so so, looked cosier from the outside than it was, felt a bit cramped and uncomfortable.

Probably the most solid place near Edinburgh castle. Tasty, home cooked style French food. The staff was attentive, polite & kind. Great respite from all the tourists traps in the area.

I've been coming here on and off for 20 years. It has consistently been one of my favourite restaurants in the world. I've never had a single bad or even average dish. I could eat any thing on the menu. The desserts are wonderful as is the general ambience. You feel like you could be in a bistro in France The staff are always friendly and the service is great. I can't say enough good things about here. Any time I'm in Edinburgh, I have to factor in a visit here even if it's a brief stay

A Touch of Paris in Edinburgh… Lovely welcome, in this intimate French restaurant. Super choice of food, and all served with a smile! Crayfish in Garlic was fabulous, and the French onion soup was first class. Chicken main dishes all superb, beautifully cooked, and the Coq au vin was presented by our waitress at the table. Highly recommend, and reasonably priced.

This is the best value for money meal I've had in Edinburgh. You get great quality service and food, something that's a bit uncommon especially in touristy places. I got the soup of the day (sweet potato) and the Coley fish with creamy leek sauce. Both were great- the soup was divine. Absolutely wonderful staff too, very friendly French atmosphere. This place deserves all the praise.

Dans le quartier de Grassmarket, joli petit bistrot accueillant et servant des plats délicieux à des prix très raisonnables. Allez-y les yeux fermés. Nous avons mangé d'excellentes moules et un magnifique boudin noir. Ce fut un délice.

is there a better location than Petit Paris in the Grassmarket to fully appreciate the international appeal of our capital city? The location is so much the appeal of this restaurant and the food always lives up to our expectations. I thoroughly the Plat Du Jour of French onion soup followed by a fish dish and my wife was delighted with her Boudin Noir. Pricing is just right and the service is spot on.

Your flavor is a little flabby, but your price makes up for it

Well, firstly everybody in here was speaking french. We just ordered cheese and a selection of starters and 1 1/2 bottles of wine. All fantastic. The mussels in blue cheese sauce was something else!

Amazing staff and nice vibe. This place is relatively cheap but the food is also not that great. Wasn’t able to finish my food because it was not cooked with good ingredients also not good meat. Will not come back.

We ordered three steaks, one medium rare and two rare. When we had finished the starter we waited a long time for the second courses while they arrived at the rest of the tables, and when the meat of both of us arrived rare (suggestion from the waiter) the meat was completely soggy and dry, the knife hardly cut the meat and It was very difficult to chew. I had to leave the entire plate and I told the waiter but he looked strange and didn't say anything else. I wouldn't pay 10% of the price for that steak. If you can avoid it, don't go.

We were here last week for the first time and had a fabulous dinner. The service was excellent and would definitely return soon.

We went to PP for breakfast. Service was very friendly and attentive. Extra requests were welcomed and delivered quickly. Food was very good, croissants fresh and buttery. Coffee in size and taste really Italian. Omelette well seasoned and not too small. Can only recommend the PP.

The service was great. The negative point is that it was very noisy and the gruyere (Emmental) as confirmed by the waiter, it tasted like expired cheese/blue cheese. Otherwise the food is good and correct.

Excellent restaurant close to the castle. One of the best beef I've ever eaten. Orders are fast. The attendants are extremely friendly. There is the option to order starter + main course + coffee for a super fair price. Other than that, they offered complimentary bread and water.

Arrived in the evening without a reservation. Boss very nice and flexible. Booked us a table from outside. Plat du Jour very good and top price-performance ratio. House wine also super good. Highly recommended.

It was the first time to try classic French food. My parents and I both felt pretty good. We need to book in advance, but unfortunately we only have a location on the negative first floor. The air downstairs is a bit stuffy. But luckily, all the dishes in the blind selection are great, especially the roast chicken+mushroom sauce, I love it so much🥰

Pleasant atmosphere, good service and service with polite and attentive people. The restaurant is small, only a few months old inside, but quite cozy. Petit Paris was very pleasant the day we were there for lunch, tasty food, well seasoned and well prepared, great value for money. $$

The fish steak, steak, onion soup and tomato soup are all delicious; but the soups are a bit salty; the fish steak is very tender and the mashed potatoes are good; the steak is juicy and the roasted potatoes are also well handled. Because business was very good, the small table we sat in the basement was very close to the table next door, which made it a bit crowded.

Lovely little bistro and was so pleased we found it. Authentic french food and the menu of the day was great value. Fast service, loads of bread and the toulouse sausage / french onion soup were great. Very much enjoyed it

Ich und mein Sohn kamen an und wurden sofort von einer sehr sympathischen Dame begrüßt. Das Essen war so schmackhaft, dass wir nächsten Mittag gleich nochmal im Restaurant aßen.😋So wie letztes Mal, war das Essen sehr gut! Das Personal hat sogar ein extra Gericht für meinen Sohn gebracht! Einfach super! 👌

Great meal and service, beautiful locale

The food is delicious, the onion soup is amazing, the atmosphere is warm and lovely in a French bistro, the waiters are very attentive to whether each table needs to add water and bread even if it is full. The level of deliciousness and price are really rare in Edinburgh.

We thought our meal was very poor - service was okay and restaurant feel was okay but the meal is self was disappointing at best - flavourless and not up to standard!

Even at the busy festival season in Edinburgh in August this is a great dependable French restaurant worth the walk down to the Grassmarket. We generally like to eat inside so you may have to wait for a table inside, but plenty of tables outside. Good range of options on the menu and good specials. Waiting staff are friendly, helpful and attentive, and you can practice speaking French to most of the staff who are clearly fluent French speakers. Average Edinburgh prices for both lunch and dinner. Only downside is that the drinks and wine by the glass can be a little hit and miss in terms of quality. Our sparking wine kir royal was flat, not a bubble in sight! Nevertheless, well worth a visit for both the French food and French atmosphere.

This is a fabulous find. Rustic French restaurant serving traditional dishes, simple and delicious. Lovely atmosphere, great value for money.

This place is the textbook definition of a tourist trap. They’re clearly not interested in repeat business, which became obvious when they tacked on a sneaky 10% "discretionary service charge" that I only discovered when the bill arrived. The waitress curtly pointed out that it was mentioned on the menu, buried in fine print at the bottom. This isn’t how you build a loyal customer base with quality service and outstanding food. Bottom line: steer clear and find a better spot off the beaten path. Having lived in Paris for two years, I can tell you this place barely scratches the surface of real French cuisine.

We are students in Edinburgh and have had many top notch food here in this beautiful peace and dynamic city. But this one just let us “speechless”. It is just like some rain drop into a muddy meadow. We order a roast chicken and steamed mussels. But the roast chicken was just like an old widow who didn’t shower for a month, and the steam mussels were not fresh at all. And more funny thing is that they use water bottles to give us a “ bottle” of wine!? My partner plays their menu, one of my dear witnesses took it away behind her back. I don’t think it’s polite for a “polite” Europe restaurant. But that’s the meaning and concrete details of European middle class flavour table manner. Normative. Though if the food is not delicious and carefully made then such delicate table manners is meaningless . What a shame

Notice to the French: it is not specified when you are served a coffee that it is an Americano and not a coffee even though it is sold as such. Damage … The kitchen is good

Top marks for a top place. A lovely environment in which to relax and eat with really attentive staff eager to make your evening memorable. Great prices, fabulous food, nice decor and the perfect atmospheric buzz meant our meal was much more than that and I can't recommend a visit here strongly enough. Definitely a valuable part of what makes Grassmarket vibrant and special.

French restaurant. The quantities are generous. We only took starters because we weren't really hungry and the quantity was perfect. The food is good and served quickly.

Lovely French restaurant at Grassmarket. Tried the pre-theatre deal - 1 starter & 1 main course & coffee and it was lovely. The tomato soup was appetizing and the fish was tender. Strongly recommend the creme brulee - it melted in my mouth! The staff were very friendly and atmosphere was cheerful. It made my day.

We love this place. However, the snails 🐌 are not available outside of the winter menu, which is very disappointing. Mussels with blue cheese were amazing, and the sausages were a bit dry and super salty.

The weather happened to be perfect, and we sat outside under the trees. Our server, Alice, was new but did an outstanding job of taking care of us. The chef did an excellent job of adapting to my wife's diet requirements using a wine butter sauce on her sea bass filet. I had the toulouse sausage with a creamy mustard sauce, which was outstanding. Also, their French onion soup was different and the best I've had.

My favourite place I've eaten in Edinburgh. Stunning food and lovely staff. Can't recommend enough!

Very good food, I ordered the onion soup and the steak of the day that day was "white fish and porridge" all with excellent flavor.

Steak was very delicious. Especially between 17:00-19:00, it should definitely be visited in terms of price and performance. The employees were friendly. It is recommended.

this was one of the best meals I've ever had, the fried goat chese in the filo pastry was to die for. the onion soup was comforting like a warm hug. the salmon in crayfish sauce was cooked perfectly, and the crayfish was so decadent. the wines were beautiful. the service was friendly. The experience felt so much like the most authentic local bistros in paris that you'd have to sort through hundreds of tourist traps to find. edinburgh is blessed to have such a great place. my only complaint was that the inside dining area was a bit too warm for an American acustomed to air conditioning and needed an open window, but it was cold and rainy outside, so we didn't complain.

I had the salmon fillet which was excellent! On the other hand, the cheese plate is really light for the price... only 3 slices and no counted blue or goat cheese Also the waitress forgot to give me change

It's terribly cliché, but the best restaurant we had during our trip to Scotland was... a French restaurant. The sea bass and salmon were just excellent, well above our expectations. It's quite expensive, but the quality is really there. And the boss is very nice. There's just the fact of serving the wine in water glasses which is... astonishing, shall we say. In short, an address not to be missed!

I loved the buff french mans attitude of big booming happiness all the staff here are really friendly and its a quaint little place, i highly recommend for people who like rustic food as everything seems freshly made, although the bread that they served in a basket was a little bit tougher then im used to, everything is very tasty aswell they know what they are doing here.

A cozy and intimate restaurant with few seats, very French with friendly staff! Asked the waiter what I should eat and was recommended their Bœuf bourguignon which was an excellent choice!

As a lone diner I found this French bistro and its petite rustic dining room a great place to eat. I started with the French onion soup, followed by the sausages with an array of mustards. Delicious food and good value for money. I didn't catch the name of my French waitress but she was amazing, very welcoming and attentive. Highly recommended.

Went here based on highest google review in the area but was sorely disappointed. French onion soup was good but then went down from there. We got the fish of the day and ut was mediocre and flavorless. After we ate our fish I asked for the check. It came about 20mins later. Waitress looked as if she could care less about catering to our pace to go sightseeing. Boo on Petit Paris.

French expatriate, I finally found a culinary establishment that made me relive magical moments from my childhood. A traditional type decoration will surely remind you of your family meals with grandparents. A French welcome and service. A cuisine more than representative of France. Cute little place for amazing french food. All the staff are very friendly, wonderful ambience. We ordered soup of the day, onion soup, fish of the day and stew of the day. We really enjoyed the food and prices were reasonable. Reservation recommended as the place is quite small.

I don't think there is any Asian discrimination, they are all very polite, but it is true that one person can only eat one appetizer and one main and not be able to finish the dessert.

The starter soup was average, and the black sausage was boiled pork blood and not tasty. as main food I ordered sausage. It's so salty I can't eat it, it burns a lot..... It's not too tasty. Also, the salmon dish is very bland and tasteless. I am reluctant to eat the sauce container containing 4 different sauces because it looks unhygienic. The employees are friendly. It's a waste to pay money to eat it,, I'm disappointed 😢 😢 😢
