Peter Tavy Inn in West Devon

This is a beautiful country pub with classic English pub food. The food is excellent, well presented and plenty of choices. They also offer smaller portions but they weren’t too small. Staff are lovely and work very hard as the restaurant is very popular.

Visited this pub with family who live localish, didnt have high hopes when i saw it but the food surprised me. I had the chicken with goats cheese and chorizo and it was amazing, one of the nicest meals i’ve had in ages. Everyone else loved their food as well. Sadly, thats where the good ends. The staff seemed nice but there was a weird atmosphere and they kept glaring at us after we finished our main. We declined dessert but were finishing our drinks when a member of our party went to pay the bill (baring in mind they didnt ask if we wanted it) and he caught the staff bitching about us still being here and they wouldnt of let us in if they knew how long we’d take. There was plenty of empty tables and if they’d needed the table back they could have just said, i think we were only there an hour and a half which is pretty normal. They were also the ones to delay our mains whilst one person ate olives. Just sad really as it ruined a great meal and now we won’t go back.

Booked 1 week in advance for Saturday lunchtime, v busy, menu as online, friendly staff, we ate various sandwiches/baguettes and a steak and Stilton pie, v large portions and v tasty, served with excellent Jail Ale. A great lunch, many thanks we will return

Had a table booked 12 o'clock Sunday lunch. To be told they need table back for 1.20 which was fine. Roast arrived which was ok not really huge portions just basic 3 veg no cauliflower cheese. But every now and again the staff kept popping there heads around the corner to see if we had finished felt like we had to hurry up and leave. It's a shame as we really enjoyed our meal last time we was there. It seems they're are trying to squeeze as many customers through as they can. Won't be going back !!

Second time visiting here, not as good this time round, waited 45 minutes for food, the food itself was nice, was offered olives and feta while waiting for our food ( assumed it was an apology for lateness of food) and was charged, very loud table next to us that ruined our dinner, won't be coming here again

Unfortunately most if not every table are allowed to be reserved so just dropping by isnt really an option it seems. Its a shame the pub has lost its traditional country pub look inside and has been "Gastro-ised". However its pleasant inside in the gastro style and friendly,serving staff are great and the food is good. Quite good portions of food too which is nice to see

We phoned and were able to get a table straight away - we were allowed to bring the dog. We were welcomed by a lovely lady (she took the phone booking too) - nothing was too much trouble and she had such a warm manner. She even bought us a bowl of water for our dog. The food was exceptional and lots of it! It was fresh and delicious - all served and presented beautifully. You could tell it was good quality and cooked with care. We hadn’t intended to go to this pub but there was nothing on offer in Tavistock but we are delighted that we did and will definitely be returning!

Oh my days. If you do only one thing this summer it has to be to visit the Peter Tavy in. A large group of 7 and we were accommodated beautiful last minute. Nothing was too much trouble. Welcome was warm and inviting. Food was seriously the best I’ve had in a pub in a long time. Amazing quality and amazing portions. I was looking for a good pub for ages and went based on the reviews and so glad I did. An absolute must x x x

Booked a week in advance as we realised it’s a busy pub. A character pub out of the way and a quiet location. Plenty of indoor seating plus clean new well kept outdoor benches/tables. 4 ales and plenty of the usual drinks available over the bar. Sunday roasts are a fair selection including a vegetarian option on starters and mains. Attentive staff, friendly approach and well up on their game. Car park could be larger in reality for the volume of diners with little turning space once you’re in if it’s full on a Sunday. All in all very enjoyable and will return.

The food is exceptional! Extra vegetables forthcoming and free. . Staff very friendly. Roast, and steak and Stilton pie legendary.

Look no further than the Peter Tavy Inn. During our weeks stay in Mary Tavy we enjoyed two lunches and two dinners with friends, all exceptional particularly their pies which were outstanding. First visit here. As know it has consistently great reviews, so been on our list to try. Lovely setting and proper traditional pub. Wonderful staff, ladies and gent, all friendly and happy to see us. My wife had the chicken, avocado, bacon salad with chips, I had the steak and stilton pie, with saute potatoes and mixed veg. My wife had ginger and honeycomb ice cream, both had coffees to finish. Plentiful and high quality meals, washed down with the excellent Tavistock English ale. A very nice visit and a venue, we will try again for sure. Thanks for having us.

We went for lunch with an elderly parent, the outside entrance area is very uneven and on entering we were directed (not taken to our reserved table) which was down a steep step. The food price was reasonable, sadly my pea mash was reheated and had a frozen lump in the middle. We waited a long time for our dinner plates to be cleared and had to find a memeber of staff to take our dessert order. Such a shame, we had such a great experience when we visited a few years ago.

We enjoyed dinner here as we were staying locally. Decent menu, reasonable prices, big log burner and nice staff. Can't really go wrong. Plenty of parking.

The very best pub restaurant in the area! Brilliant service and lovely food. Came with family from France and they absolutely loved it. Fish and Chips, Steak and Stilton Pie, Chicken Leek pie were all superb, and we had a job finishing the generous portions! Go for the optional smaller portions next time. Being in our 70s & 80s we don’t have huge appetites so the option of small servings on many of the dishes on offer is very welcome. That said, even the small portions are pretty generous. There’s a good selection of starters, mains & desserts (homemade with a good selection of local ice creams & sorbets). All the staff are very welcoming & helpful. Advisable to book as this pub is justifiably very popular.

First ever visit, won't be the last. Both service and food were excellent, the staff were also in the same category, our grandson accidentally knocked his drink over, the staff were quickly there to clean it up and sort the table out.

This was my first visit. The interior is very cosy and there are a couple of lovely log burners. My sister and I took my mum for a post birthday lunch. She had a three course pensioners meal. The portion sizes were very good and it was very good value for money. I had a prawn baguette and it was massive and very tasty. My sister had a lamb casserole which was excellent. I will definitely be back. We came on a Monday expecting it to be quiet which it wasn't I would recommend booking!

Had a delicious meal. Food was excellent and staff were brilliant. The meal was better than the top class restaurant which we had been to recently. We had senior meals which were very ample in portions. The price at the end was extremely pleasing. In all a very pleasant experience.

Make sure you book in advance as this pub is very good. We went for Sunday lunch which was quite excellent. We all went for the roast beef which was lovely ( if only my Yorkshire puddings were as good) Portion size tends to be quite big so I opted for a smaller portion but the rest of our party went for full size. Vegetables were plentiful and very nicely cooked to perfection. Too full for puddings so we shared one. Lovely

Well what can you say! We have loved this pub for too many years to remember. Went once, new owners once…awful! But my dears this month…. Out of this world. You could not have asked for more be it management or staff. Like three musketeer’s….all for one …they just all worked together. Delivering most wonderful food and hospitality xxxx. We have visited a couple of times in October and November. A lovely warm welcome and really great food. Super family meal this weekend. They had run out of pork so I had duck. It was delicious. Highly recommend. We will be back!

We have just been enjoyed a really superb evening and dinner here. The staff were really friendly, chatty and attentive throughout, our meals were delicious and really generous in their portions and given the times we are in I thought the prices pretty standard and fair, so no complaints whatsoever and a great evening thank you.

Food is really good and well presented, staff cheerful, polite and helpful. The option for smaller portions of many items on the menu is helpful - smaller portions do not mean "diet" size, just what the average person can eat!. The reason for the lower rating is dogs, dogs, dogs. Perhaps the smaller eating area of the snug could be made dog free.
