Nestled amidst the picturesque backdrop of Truro, The Penrose Kitchen is a gastronomic haven where every detail is orchestrated to create an unforgettable dining experience. From the moment my wife and I stepped into this culinary sanctuary, we were swept away by the elegance and sophistication that graced every corner. Our evening began with a libation that set the tone for the culinary journey ahead: expertly crafted martini cocktails moistened our palates as we perused the menu, our anticipation grew, knowing that we were about to embark on a culinary adventure unlike any other. For starters, my wife's choice of twice-baked soufflé was a testament to the chef's artistry. The delicate rise of the soufflé was a prelude to the exquisite flavours that awaited within. My own selection, the scallops accompanied by a bold partner – black pudding – was a harmonious pairing of textures and tastes that delighted my senses. As the evening progressed, we were introduced to a refined duet of main courses, which were accompanied with an exquisite Argentinian Malbec, my wife's choice of halibut over a bed of vibrant broccoli showcased the chef's mastery of marrying ingredients with what can only be described as a Zen like balance of flavours. The halibut, tender and succulent, seemed to glide effortlessly across the plate. My own dish, a filet of beef, was a rhapsody of flavours that reverberated with each exquisite bite. The Malbec, proved to be the virtuoso companion to the rich tapestry of flavours that emerged from every mouthful of steak. In the midst of this culinary opus, the service and staff shone as brightly as the cuisine. Attentive, knowledgeable, and discreet, they guided us through this culinary symphony with a grace that elevated the entire experience. The husband and wife team behind The Penrose Kitchen are nothing short of a culinary tour de force, their passion evident in every plate that emerges from their kitchen. As our evening drew to a close, we surrendered to the final movement of our dining experience – a finale that embraced both indulgence and refinement. A Cointreau liqueur coffee, bold and warming, bid adieu to the main performance, leaving us with a lingering aftertaste of satisfaction and contentment. The Penrose Kitchen is not merely a restaurant; it is an embodiment of gastronomic excellence that transports diners to the echelons of fine dining without the intimidating price tag. For both residents and visitors to Cornwall, this establishment is an invitation to savour Michelin-quality fare in an environment where every detail is curated to perfection.

An absolute gem, hidden away off the beaten track. You’ll never ‘just be passing’ so search them out and go there. It’s the law. A wonderful welcome, which morphed into wonderful service, and just superb food and cooking. This is not a cheap meal but you get what you pay for. £60 a head incl. service for a three course gourmet meal and a glass of wine. It was a lovely warm evening and we took the offer of a table on the deck overlooking the lily ponds. Could have spent the evening eating the just baked, warm homemade bread alone. And paid handsomely for it. Penrose Kitchen is one of those unique slightly quirky eateries that Cornwall does so well. Just fab.

I’m reluctant to do this review as I’m not sure I want too many people to find out about this place, it might get too busy!? Forewarned about the cheese soufflé so had very high expectations…it was as good as they said! My bass main course was even better, a wonderful plate of interesting tastes put together with much attention to detail - the fish cooked to perfection, Ben clearly knows how to cook food - simply one of my most favourite plates of fish in a long while. Beautiful yet subtle personable service throughout and made to feel very ‘warmly’ welcome. Left here with a feeling like we had just experienced something a bit special…but we weren’t anywhere near the south east of England, we were just outside our home town of Truro!! :-) Thank you.

We had a wonderful experience at the Penrose Kitchen. We were greeted by Sam, who was friendly and extremely accommodating. The menu provided a great selection of fish and meat dishes, all of which were served with carefully selected sides and vegetables, that complemented the main part of the dish. The starter cheese soufflé was a mouth watering delight and I can see why it always remains of every menu-just gorgeous! We were with our adult daughter, who is gluten intolerant and the majority of the menu was suitable for her or could be easily adapted. Unfortunately none of us had room for pudding, so next time we visit, we will refrain from a starter and try these! Overall a faultless evening out in a lovely atmosphere, with wonderful food. We will definitely be back and bring our friends! Thank you.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Penrose Kitchen today. We both opted for the set menu, which was primarily fish-based and didn't disappoint. I had the haddock fishcakes and my other half chose the pate. The latter came with one slice of toast which we considered a bit stingy, but you couldn't fault the immense flavour in either dish. For the main course, my partner chose the sole and I had the beef brisket. Again, both meals were delicious. I was so full after my two courses, I took the easy route out and ordered another glass of the fabulous French rose wine, (dry), whilst my other half managed to squeeze in a vanilla pannacotta with berries and a dollop of cornish iced cream. The service was attentive, yet unobtrusive, and we are definitely planning a return visit in the near future. Just one request please: for those of us who order the skinny fries, please can we have some vinegar on hand? Pretty please.

But thank goodness we live 300+ miles away! We visited today for our first wedding anniversary. The food, service and ambiance did not disappoint I had cheese soufflé to start (it’s divine) and hubby had chicken parfait. Followed by lobster (me, yum. It was my wedding anniversary) and he had roast chicken which looked lovely. Date pudding with sticky toffee sauce and I had mango sorbet rounded off a lovely meal. We then had a lovely walk around the water gardens which I highly recommend.

A lovely setting for this excellent restaurant not far from Truro. There is a spacious feel and the atmosphere is enhanced by the original art work on the walls. We had a very good three course meal. Interesting menu choices make the most of locally produced ingredients including fresh fish and organic vegetables. Desserts were delicious. Service was personal and friendly.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch for 9 of us to celebrate a family birthday. The whole team were very friendly, and we were seated quickly and drinks orders taken and delivered promptly. This set the tone for the visit in terms of Service, which throughout was efficient and friendly, as well as being attentive without being overbearing; so a great job from the front of house team. The chefs in the kitchen also did a similarly great job, each dish was beautifully cooked, and the roast beef in particular was a stand out for being tender and full of flavour. - What was also noticeable was that the they managed to feed 9 of us with the dishes for each course coming pretty much all at the same time; - without any noticeable waits between the dishes being brought out; - something a lot restaurants seem to struggle with; so a massive plus to the team. The food itself was excellent, beautifully cooked and full of flavour with plenty of choice variety, the wine list had a really good selection at reasonable prices; and the non alcoholic cocktails were excellent and imaginative and much appreciated by the drivers in our party. Would highly recommend, and we will be back again over the next few months.

Great food and excellent service - just what we were looking for today. My partner, a lover of all kinds of fish was not disappointed with a scallop starter and hake to follow. I enjoyed the much hallowed cheese souffle followed by the melt in the mouth beef brisket. Generous portions and very well cooked with a definite 'cheffy' touch to everything made it the perfect lunch. I can certainly recommend a visit and we will certainly return with friends the next time.

we were recommended to try PENROSE KITCHEN on our recent week in a cottage near Truro and were glad of the recommendation. It's a bit of an adventure to find it tucked away off the beaten track near water gardens of which the restaurant was once the plant store and shop. It's just a basic large hut but has been ingeniously decorated and is now run by a very able young chef with his partner front of house. The ambitious menu was full of options for a carnivore and a near-vegetarian. The cheese souffle starter (my main course - I often just have two starters) - was probably the best I've had anywhere and I like to think I'm a bit of a connoissuer. My husband had turbot which he pronounced as excellent. The service was quick, efficient and charming. Recommended.

Started well; pre dinner drinks and perusing the menu in lovely surroundings. Once we were seated our starters arrived - the cheese soufflés were delicious, as was the squid. However the salad requested by my sister was awful. Gritty greens, bland, starchy ' purple' potatoes and the dressing tasted like salad cream from a jar! Two of the fish main courses were watery and tasteless and peas were not cooked, so rock hard. A butternut squash risotto was returned to the kitchen, by one of our party, as it was tasteless and the squash had not been cooked with the rice but a huge lump of it just plonked on top of the rice. The broccoli with this was hard and not cooked through. Another choice of main was offered but nothing else on the menu was desired, so a salad was requested instead. This was exactly the same as the first course salad.....really quite ridiculous; how can a chef not manage to produce a flavoursome plate with a variety of green leaves with a nice dressing.....ands what's with the grittiness? Don't this establishment wash their greens?! Ginger cake for dessert was dry and I think they forgot to add any ginger! Served with dry, tasteless pastry twill and bland ice cream. The chef appeared to be on his own in the kitchen so clearly he was unable to cope with the number of covers on this particular evening and wasn't able to finesse any of the dishes, or even check that flavourings and whether vegetables were actually cooked through. So disappointed, as the reviews of this restaurant were so good. Certainly doesn't warrant Rossettes for dining.

Absolutely worthy of its high marks. Pentode Kitchen was a stones throw from where we were staying so a leisurely walk down the hill was all that was required.Pre drinks cocktails were delicious, sat in the lounge whilst perusing the drinks and food menus. Unhurried and friendly service followed with orders taken in the lounge before being escorted to our table when it was ready. Staff were highly professional and knew the menus well and you felt they were really happy to be able to welcome people back to their lovey restaurant. The food was simply sublime!! Even the bread on the table was fantastic and some of the lightest, tastiest bread we had ever tasted and we knew it was going to be good when the butter is at room temperature and spreadable!!!A good choice of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes are available and flavours and textures were fantastic. This is not pub grub but high class dining with food that is right up there with Michelin starred establishments. Each dish is carefully thought out with interesting combinations, fish and meat together as a main outside of a surf n turf is unusual but my wild sea bass with veal shoulder was exceptional. Portion size was spot on allowing for 3 courses with out feeling stuffed and prices were excellent for the quality of the food on offer.Overall a lovely eating experience that I challenge anyone to find fault with.Sadly they are booked up well in advance so we can’t sneak back in tomorrow for our last night but hey ho if we find ourselves Truro way again it’s a given we will be back.Well done to the whole team!!!

We had a lunch for 6 last week, following a friends recommendation. Sam had laid tables for us both inside and outside, ready for us to decide where we wanted to sit. Even though it was an overcast day, we were on holiday so chose the outside table, overlooking the beautiful Water Gardens next door. (also worth a visit)Sam was amazingly friendly and competent. She offered us blankets to keep our knees warm and she was very knowledgeable about both the menu and wines. Our meals were absolutely delicious and the ample portions a very pleasant surprise. Somehow we managed 3 courses. i still don't know how. I would definitely return next time i'm in Cornwall

My partner and I visited Penrose for my 60th birthday-based on some of the reviews we had read, prior to travelling down to Cornwall from Birmingham for a week away. On arrival (7.45) ,were greeted promptly and shown our table by the waitress who was very pleasant. The restaurant was busy with only one chef and two waitresses serving on. We waited around 30 minutes to be asked what we would like to drink. We were then left for around another 20 minutes before our order was taken by the other of the two waitresses .Our starter, Scallops with black pudding and a pea purée arrived around thirty minutes later. The scallops were cooked nicely but the black pudding was cooked to a crisp, spoiling the dish overall. We then waited for around 45minutes for our main course. I had chosen fillet steak - ordered medium rare with roared broccoli, onion and potato and an accompanying sauce.Unfortunately my steak was more rare than medium rare. The onion was a full half baked section, overpowering and too much of one thing for the dish. The sauce to be frank was rather bland and disappointing and the food was generally over salted. My partner ordered a sweet but at this point I personally felt reticent to try anything else from the menu.Throughout the evening we were left for long periods waiting for attention and finally left the venue at just turned 11pm, in my opinion the evening too long for a meal.My partner commented on the lack of taste in her dish, sloppy fish, (Lemon sole fillets) and a stodgy sweet - a chocolate brownie. In summary we felt that the food was less than average and not the fine dining experience we expected, in comparison to other fine dining establishments we have frequented,(Simpson’s, Opus, Edmunds etc) in Birmingham for a similar price.

After three unsuccessful attempts we had a total of three birthdays and an abortive new year's eve visit to make up for!So, to cut to the chaseThe food is as excellent as ever and you now have an additional member of the Cheese Souffle fan club! Our guest was hugely impressed, especially with the locally sourced ingredients, and hopes to return!Despite the comprehensive covid precautions everyone was as friendly as ever and we really appreciate not being rushed and being allowed to enjoy a meal without clock-watching which seems to be quite common these daysStill our favourite restaurant , we really hope you are now past the worst of the pandemic and can forge an even better reputation

A warm greeting, great service and as brilliant food as ever… the fabulously fresh local asparagus was particularly well prepared and dressed, and my better half’s scallops were quite superb. For mains, both the duck and sea bass were gorgeous. A wonderful meal - and with the excellent Portuguese white wine by the glass, we had a perfect romantic lunch on a rather grey day.

We went to Penrose Kitchen at the end of October last year just before lockdown and couldn't wait to return. We were not disappointed. Both the food and service are absolutely faultless. This is fine dining at its best without the pretentiousness of many restaurants which serve food of this calibre. It is warm welcoming but at the same time intimate and friendly. Each course is accompanied by a wine suggestion, which in our experience is spot on. Thank goodness we had booked a taxi! We've already booked our next visit.

We were due to eat here during November for our silver wedding anniversary but due to lockdown it was delayed until December. Prior to booking I liaised with Ben and Sam, as I am a very fussy eater and they produced a menu to satisfy my whims. Never have I been anywhere where the chef is so accommodating and flexible, it was very much appreciated so thank you very much! Needless to say the food and service was fantastic and we had a lovely evening. Will be back again as soon as the lockdown situation allows.

Penrose Kitchen has been on our radar for a while but we hadn't got around to visiting before and now we are kicking ourselves! The welcome is warm and friendly and we felt very covid secure. The menu is varied and interesting and each dish is complemented with a wine suggestion. Our thinking was if the dishes and wine compliment each other then well worth accepting these suggestions. Disappointed we were not. Scallops perfectly cooked with a well balanced Gavi. Pigs cheeks with a fruity Californian Pinot Noir. We both opted for the melt in the mouth 28 day aged beef fillet superbly matched with an unusual earthy Tannat from Uraguay. Desserts of rosmary poached pear with a late harvest Riesling and a light warm orange and almond cake (Muscat suggested but not tried) was the perfect conclusion to a delightful dining experience. We will definitely return.

Situated a quick 10 minute drive from the city centre, it was a pleasure to come across this venue when looking to have a celebratory meal out with my fiancé. Whilst it was the sample menu that drew us in, it was the fantastic team and mouth watering food that has kept us coming back. A strong nod to local suppliers, who deliver fantastic produce, throughout the menu is a great touch - Ben, the head chef and owner, embraces this along with seasonal flavours and daring pairings to produce outstanding and original dining experiences (yes experiences) each time we’ve visited. Of course, the firm favourites are still there. How he’s managed to produce a Date and Sticky Toffee Pudding so packed with flavour and pure deliciousness is still beyond the belief of my mother, sister and I on our second visit for lunch. To Sam and her team, especially Grace, we’d like to thank you for being utterly excellent at your job. Sam, you have a wonderful way of putting us at ease and gave us just enough attention to keep us thoroughly satisfied (okay, perhaps we got a little bit jealous when you spoke to any table but us. I’m sure we’ll get over it..)A wine list to boast about was a truly exciting addition to our evening, with a recommendation from Sam securing us a phenomenal bottle of Torrontes for the night. The professionalism of yourself and your staff is unparalleled, without compromise of personality as often comes from finer dining venues. Thank you for our wonderful experiences so far - we look forward to adding to these in the very near future! ZN & KCH

Lovely setting (countryside, among Lilliy Ponds, good car parking and only a couple of minutes from Shortlanesend, close to Truro. Lovely greeting, service and food. £28 for a three course lunch of exceptional quality. You really should try this place, I know we will be there again when we can.

Had wanted to visit for ages but with all that’s happened this year I only just got round to it. Being fairly local I’m aware of the vast amount of places to eat around Truro. But just because there’s lots of choice doesn’t mean it’s good. So, from past (bad) experiences I tend not to go anywhere unless I’ve read the reviews & hopefully had a recommendation. Didn’t have the latter but read the reviews & honestly based on my experience I fail to understand how anyone can leave less than a 5. I met a friend & we were both very impressed with everything. It’s in a lovely rural setting & the decor is attractive but that’s no good if the service & food are rubbish. They’re definitely not! We were greeted by a masked, very polite young lady who was attentive & friendly throughout. Nothing was too much trouble. It was a quiet day so no wait for our meals, which were just perfect in taste & presentation. Portion size to my mind is absolutely correct, if you want quantity over quality, go elsewhere. Wait time may be longer on busier days, but I’d be prepared to wait, it’s that good. As others have said the Cheese Soufflé is amazing!! Prices are reasonable & what I’d expect for this quality. On the Covid note. Masks must be worn until you’re seated. Plenty of hand sanitiser, plenty of space between tables. Very clean! I will be returning.

This was our first lunch out as a couple this year.....thanks Covid we wanted to go somewhere we had never tried yet had long wanted to and this was the place.Hidden away is the gorgeous restaurant, simply styled and very welcoming. The staff are super friendly and I'm sure there are some lovely smiles behind the masks. It strikes me your getting a changing daily menu here and there was a choice of 4 starters, mains and desserts. My one ever so slight issue, and I'm probably just being fussy here was that 2 of the 4 dishes were fish, the meat dish was calves liver which is a very acquired taste and then a mushroom gnocchi. We don't eat fish and neither were excited by the liver.. but more about that later. The cocktail menu is amazing and mine was like drinking a summer holiday, wonderful For starter's I chose the cheese souffle, which was quite simply the most amazing thing I have ever tasted in my life, so light and airy and soft and heavenly, the cheese was perfect and not too rich at all just WOW, Thankyou for this! My husband had the lamb which was a comforting hunk of meat that mealted in the mouth again, delicious! My mushroom gnocchi was tasty and well balanced. My husband decided to face his childhood fears head on and order the liver, we were both apprehensive but confident after tasting the starter. When it arrived 2 huge chunks of calves liver it looked delicious , one hesitant mouthful and my husband was instantly converted and all rubbery, dry liver being force fed as a child was forgotten, it was melt in the mouth buttery perfection and he almost licked the plate clean! Seriously well done here guy's!! Awesome stuff.Desserts were the vanilla panna cotta which was slightly bland for me and the sticky date pudding for my husband which was again superb and secretly I wish I'd had it too I got huge pudding envy! We had such a fantastic meal and afternoon that I had re booked within an hour of leaving to bring a friend next month. I am so happy we have found you, I love that all the food is quality, locally sourced, superbly cooked and the attentive nature of the staff. Thank you

The ice creams here are beautiful! Really generous portions and are very well presented. The customer service we received was outstanding, my daughter had a massive meltdown (ASD) and they were nothing but supportive, understanding and helpful. We'd had a very tough day today with meltdowns galore and this one was by far the worst of the day yet I never felt alone or judged. People like you make the biggest difference and I am so very grateful for you going out of your way to help and care. Thank you x
