A meal priced at £18+ worse than a Wetherspoons. Clearly end of service bodge job with both meals. When I asked the member of staff dealing with the issue if either meal would have looked the same if served at 5pm instead of post 7pm she said no. Full refund for food. Charged for drinks. When I left the table to return the empty glasses to the bar, it was blocked by a staff member who was clearly annoyed at us when we laid up and returned the glasses on the other side of the bar. Too late to get a meal somewhere else. Such a shame. I’ve been eating there for over 8 years

Welcoming and clean but food is dreadful. No flavour, all tastes bland. Very disappointed, definitely won’t be going back there!

We stopped here in the way from bishop auckland to the lakes, and I cant believe how bad it was. The food is ridiculous. I ordered fish and chips and for £15 I would expect something reasonable in size and quality, the portion I got was tiny, a very small tail end of cod (?), I dont like a fuss and dont like to complain as it was the start of a little getaway, however it was truly shocking. It was served with triple cooked chips, which must be the term used for frozen chips. My little girl had a pizza which was covered in either red leicester or coloured cheddar leaving it greasey and ultimately hardly eaten, meant to be served with carrot sticks, but was served with cooked carrot slices instead. I was asked when I paid the bill if everything was alright and I couldnt answer honestly as i was so furious and determined not to let it ruin the start of a holiday. A simple menu is not hard to accomplish, I have personally worked in hospitality for 25 years and I would have been truly embarrassed if I had served something so poor.

Do not trust this food. Flies always hover around this dining room ! Sausage and mash last night were truly poor. Mashed potato filled the dish, pity it was reconstituted from dried Gravy had a thick skin as it cooled with an overwhelming smell of gravy mix from a jar. Sausages were cooked previously and reheated to a temperature only a microwave can achieve.

What a lovely place. We called in for a spot of dinner and first impression was of a spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated bar / restaurant. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was really good, my husband and son got pies and they were amazing, really well filled and exceptionally tasty. I got a filled wrap, which was well filled and my son's partner got a selection of small plates - great portions and very tasty. All in all a very nice experience and would highly recommend.

Visited here the other night have eaten before and its been okay usually just pop in for a drink whilst in the town for a takeaway. Thought we may aswell sit outside and have a meal whilst the weather was nice . My partner had the scampi and fries (can't really go wrong with frozen scampi and frozen fries ) not a complaint about that but my meal was just shocking. I've been a chef since school and I'm unsure what the "chef" was thinking but I ordered chicken parmigiana and it came out as a dry chicken breast (not breaded) with some chopped tinned tomatoes on top and abit of half melted cheese) I cut into it and didn't even bother trying it it looked revolting and didn't smell nice at all . I did eat the fries they were ok . Staff never checked back so we just left and ended up getting myself some food at the co op . Shame really.

Had a great lunch here on a Sunday. Went for the hot beef sandwich with roasties. Delicious. Beef, cooked overnight, was tender. Thoroughly recommend. Sunday lunches also looked great. Our meal was far superior to our evening meal at the Black Bull in Nateby

Nuestra elección fue Steak and Ale Pie y Battered Haddock. No decepcionado.

Pretty average I’m afraid and therefore expensive for what it was. The Yorkshire pudding with Beef stew was heavy on vegetables and low on beef, gravy quite sweet. Fish and chips ok but again overpriced

Delicious fish and chips, very nicely presented with perfectly home cooked chips and a lightly battered haddock. It’s a lively venue, a popular meeting place with all ages although quite noisy it suited us with a 4yr old - we didn’t have to worry if he talked loudly! We did sit in the bar area but have eaten in the restaurant on previous visits which is much quieter.

We were staying in a b and b and the owners recommended this bistro. We were both tempted by the Hungarian goulash special. It was a very generous portion and was served with two huge mounds of very good mashed potato which did a good job of soaking up the sauce. The meat was very tender but my husband appeared to have my share! I didn't notice at the time, just thought it was a bit meat lacking. He said afterwards he had loads of meat! The staff were very friendly and service prompt and efficient.

Called in for lunch, desperate for (1) the loo, (2) a drink and (3) something to eat. Activity (1) sorted, I ordered a pint of Timothy Taylor for (2) and a BLT for (3). The BLT was delicious - served on a crisp olive baguette, lots of tasty bacon, fries and salad - couldn't fault it. Nice bright room, friendly service - ideal for what I wanted.

Dropped in for a drink and a snack attracted by the obvious popularity of the cafe. Outside seating is also available and you can get a good view of the world going by in this busy wee town. We had eaten in this restaurant before and had really enjoyed it but this visit wasn’t as impressive. Even though we’d booked in advance, they were not expecting us. Had Sunday dinner but which Sunday it had been prepared on is still baffling as most of the food was cold. The lamb was totally cold and hadn't seen any heat from being cooled after cooking as were the mashed potatoes. What I think was supposed to be cauliflower cheese was swimming in grease or oil. Strange thing was the plates were really hot so how they managed to serve cold food is a miracle. We were subjected to the choice of music the 'Chef' wanted to have blearing in the kitchen to the point we couldn't hear ourselves talking. Certainly wouldn't waste money again. They certainly use all the right language and foodie terminology on the menu to make you think they know what they're doing but something's seriously wrong if you can't even get a Sunday roast right!

As a dining experience this place is forgettable. Someone with limited interior design ability has worked their “magic” and created a real mish-mash in here. What could be cosy and classy is basic and glitzy (not in a good way). Sunday lunch was 50% ok, and 50% repulsive. The lamb was fine (although cold), the mash and roast potatoes were quite nice. They use frozen sprouts here, and of course they never ever work; they were like little balls of leather and totally uneatable. Baby carrots were tasteless and pointless. The cauliflower cheese looked really good, and the sauce tasted excellent; the cauliflower itself needed a hell of a lot of cooking before it even approached “al dente”! It was raw and disgusting. To add to all this, the service was lack lustre, unfriendly and extremely poor (here I’m being generous). Save yourself some stress and avoid the Pennine Bistro.

Took lunch here on Easter Saturday, whilst the bar was fairly busy we found a table through the back. Within minutes of getting seated a very pleasant young lady asked for our drinks order and they followed minutes later. 5 Minutes later the same lady returned asking if we were ready to order, we both went for the Cumberland sausage curl in a bun with chips and salad priced at £7.95 she immediately informed us that it was not actually a curl but straight sausages, that was fine with us.

The landlord/barman was friendly and the prices were very reasonable, in fact I would say on the cheap side which is always a bonus. They have a TV too which was handy for the test match cricket. Its clearly an eaterie first and foremost so don't expect sofas or comfy chairs to sit in, its tables and dining chairs with a few high rise stools thrown in.
