I volunteer here once a week but also go to the Wednesday community lunch where a set 3 course meal is served at 12.30. Open to all, you pay by donation but there is no obligation. Lentil soup with sourdough bread, vegetarian lasagne with garlic toast , coffee and chocolate hazelnut cake was yesterday's delicious meal. There's a friendly atmosphere and willing service. The Storehouse also supports several young vulnerable adults who help to serve and to clear tables - always with a smile. I feel really lucky and proud to have the Storehouse in my town. I hesitated to write this review because I volunteer in the shop but I am also a café customer.

Appalling service. Staff were downright rude and did not engage at all, appearing to resent customers and barely responding to questions about food and ordering. Lunch came late and burnt. Salad was a tiny bit of lettuce and a slice of tomato. Very sad as this used to be a great community resource. Won’t be returning.

Very nice friendly laid back place with an emphasis on community and organics. The soup was delicious, served by very friendly volunteers. A nice place to just stop for a while surrounded by lots of hand made craft items and high quality produce. They have a refill service for washing and cleaning products.

Lovely home cooking from scratch. Vegetarian , vegan, wholesome. Its a community shop selling organic , locally produced veg and fruit and whole foods as well as planet friendly personal and household cleaning products. The shop is a bit pricey but a valuable resource for locals.

Very disappointed that semi skimmed milk wasn't available to have in coffee. Home baking looked great. Although premises are being externally refitted fixtures and fittings on the inside were clean and tidy.

This is a shop and cafe I visit regularly. Great atmosphere, great produce, lovely people and delicious soup and home baking available in the cafe. A community venture run by local people for local people and the wider world. The shop has a good variety of vegetables and all kinds of food stuffs, as well as good quality crafts suitable as lovely gifts. The Storehouse is a gem.

Stopped here for lunch. Penicuik Storehouse is part mini market selling lots of local produce with a cafe near the back of the store. The seating is a mix of informal couches, tables and breakfast tables, but there’s no theme or consistency to the decor. The extra Covid hygiene precautions are in place. All the staff wore face masks, there was a screen at the cafe counter, hand sanitisers around the cafe and tables were cleaned after each customer. I ordered a Cashew Cream Cheese and Cucumber Soda Bread, and a latte. The coffee was okay. The meal was excellent. The cream cheese went very well with the freshly sliced cucumbers and cashews. The soda bread was well toasted and mixed with the cream cheese, giving each bite a lovely feel as the bread soaked up the cream.

This is an business that's going somewhere in the middle of Penicuik High Street that is becoming a bit sad with many closed shops. A nice friendly shop run by volunteers with great plans to open an indoor market and kitchen behind it. Very welcoming and not a plastic bag in sight!

The Penicuik Storehouse is a unique community shop in the centre of the town where you can meet friends, buy the very best local food and other household products. It is mostly run by volunteers who sometimes make you the the best Flat White outside New Zealand. You are likely to meet the most interesting people in Penicuik and if you volunteer you can work alongside them too. Yes I do have shares!! You can buy shares too.

There have been many changes since we last visited Whitmuir pre-pandemic. The farm food shop has gone and has been replaced by Junkshop Antiques (which used to operate from smaller premises on the site); The Dancing Light gallery apparently moved online some time ago and the vacant unit they previously occupied was due to be re-launched as a (Christmas) shop when we were there in November 2022. The café looks the same as before (minus the gallery’s paintings) but opened again under new ownership in September 2022 and now trades simply as Whitmuir Cafe. I’m glad to see the log burner remains in place as it is needed to try to keep this cavernous place warm at this time of year. Quercus Garden Plants still operate on the site however when we visited garden plants were not something we were looking to explore. At the time of our lunch visit there was a slow, steady flow of customers but these are large premises to fill so it lacked atmosphere. The menu choice is modest and we ordered up their Toastie of the Day, which was ham and cheese, served with house salad and dressing £6.95). My wife’s request to replace the sourdough bread with brown bread was met. I ordered a Bagel with chicken & lemon mayonnaise, also served with house salad and dressing (£6.25). We both enjoyed our lunch - the chicken was plentiful and tasty with the mayo, the toastie filling good quality and we both rated the house salad and dressing very highly. The only criticism was that the cutlery knives seemed blunt. The coffee we had along with the food was very good - Flat white (£2.95) and Americano (£2.60) - so we ordered another to go along with the home bakes both of which happened to be gluten free. My wife requested the smaller of the large looking slices of Treacle and Lemon tart on display, which turned out to be wise since she was unable to finish it; and I had an Almond slice which I too was unable to finish. Verdict on the cakes was “okay” however we have only rarely found a gluten free cake which we could say we really enjoyed so that is probably just our taste. Overall cost of lunch was just over £29 which we thought was good value. Staff were friendly and efficient. It’s early days for the revised format and not as attractive an overall destination for us however we wish them well. Check opening hours if travelling - seems to be Wednesday to Sunday, 10.00am until 4.00pm at present.

Inexplicably just stopped being a restaurant. Can't find anything about it online. Open but for what purpose I don't know. Now the guests at the associated premier inn next door have nowhere to eat. We were regulars and it was great to have somewhere affordable and reliable to get a meal. We are owed an explanation.

Excellent Sunday lunch, lovely starter (tasty bread board) and great main courses. The waiting staff were all very friendly and welcoming and have already recommend to other friends!

Simple pub grub type place over a large site. Lots of pub regular dishes on offer. All that we ordered was served in good time and tasted as it should. Decent enough pub option comparable to Elginhaugh nearby
