Penhelig Arms in Gwynedd

I recently stayed at Hotel and had a relaxing time. The rooms were of a very high standard—clean, comfortable, and beautifully maintained. The food at the restaurant was equally impressive.The combination of top-notch accommodation and excellent dining makes a fantastic place to stay. I’ll definitely be recommending it to others!

No staff but the one lady was trying to do everything. That wasn’t the main problem, we had lunch from the set menu, the starter was okay but the main course came on a small side plate with a pot with about 10 peas in a few chips and a couple of fish strips. My sandwich which contained very little filling had been left under the hot lamp and therefore was hard. Had to send it back. If it wasn’t for the fact that we had already paid (which was overpriced) we would have sent it back and gone somewhere else. They had only half of the items on the menu, seemed as if they were trying to stretch out the food that they had. I would say just have a drink and avoid having any food, but the drinks are very overpriced, so overall avoid here. There are better places to eat.

Having stayed at the Penhelig many times over the last 20 years we were spending our joint birthday break here.Sadly let down by the fact that the menu was very restrictive with my first 4 choices not available, and no Sunday roast available we ended up having fish and chips which was a huge disappointment and we left half. Having spoken to the manager and he explained the situation hopefully things will improve and we will go back in a few months to hopefully see how things may have improved, I must add that breakfast was excellent.

Had a lovely meal and Sion made our stay very welcome even offered to get me a free drink when my their was a problem with my food order. Definitely would return hopefully when the weather is better.

Absolute gem of a place, perfect location and setting. Staff very friendly and helpful, evening meal was superb. A great place to stay!

Superb food and service as usual . We really look forward to coming to the area and spending time in the Penhelig Inn. We have been visiting the Penhelig for at least thirty years and it is one of our enjoyment things in life.

We stayed for 2 nights and was greeted wonderfully by a lovely lady on the front desk we had evening meals both nights and they were outstanding i had a steak my first night which was cooked to perfection and my 2nd night the fish and chips which was also very nice i couldnt recommend staying here enough it was truly a great experience.

Long long wait infact it was over 1 hour before we received any food then it was our main course our starters never turn up ( with no explanation) wasn't offered any condiments and no one came back to check if everything was ok. Was put in a table in the reception area not the dining room which I had book. Certainly not the right way to be running a place. Be honest with your customers if there's a problem or a wait for food.

Dave and his team are remarkable. This team is what great hospitality is all about. Commitment to customer service, spotless hotel (so clean) food is out of this world 🌎. From breakfast to lunch and dinner, all tastes and deity requirements catered for. Can't wait to come return, Dave is the star of the show keeping all the cogs turning it a fantastic way. well done team. 👍

Could not have been more pleased with this restaurant from the friendly greeting upon arrival. We had the fish and chips, excellent, and the lasagne which I think is the best I have had in a very long time. The restaurant was very clean and the ambiance excellent. No loud music blasting out. Highly recommended.

First we had a warm welcome from dave the manager and was shown to our seats. I noticed dogs were welcome so il definitely come back with my dogs followed by a walk on the beach. Food was great, you need to get the halloumi fries. The location is beautiful, even if you have food inside. Go have a drink in the beer garden. Strongly recommend this pub and il be returning to try there Xmas menu

Very disappointed with our meal tonight. Undercooked chicken burger served and when returned the replacement came out raw. Photo attached. Unfortunately it put everyone else off their meals which seemed ok. The staff and manager were very apologetic, polite and agreed it was not acceptable.

Our small group enjoyed a selection of hearty and affordable pub meals (steak pie, burgers & sea bass) at the Penhelig Arms on a recent midweek evening. (Orders taken until 8pm). It's situated at the far end of the village and seems to attract a good mix of locals and visitors. The atmosphere was informal and the enigmatic & witty barman who looked after us all evening certainly added to the enjoyable experience.

We went to see family down in the area the atmosphere was lovely Adam greeted us at the door very friendly and welcoming a nice choice of food the fish was lovely and steak cooked perfectly the hotel was lovely and clean we left very happy and will be back Thankyou to all the staff

Stayed a here for a few nights recently and it was a lovely stay. My room was lovely and comfortable and lovely views to wake up to in the morning of the sea and area. The staff are lovely and kind and helpful. Food was also lovely and a really nice variety available on the menu. Also a dog friendly restaurant/hotel and the staff were friendly and lovely towards my dog. Would really recommend the stay, a great place overall.

Yet another nice stay at the Pen, room was comfy and to add the sun was out, had to come off the balcony as it was that hot, nice views and nice staff, will be back in November to look at the re furb, Dave thanks for the free pint of San miguel, hope i can get another one in November, a great team and a credit to you Dave cheers.

We stayed here last year and had a great stay, so we returned and wasn’t disappointed, the room was clean, bedsheets and towels were too (I’m fussy about these) and the the view was spectacular as we overlooked the sea. The room had tea and coffee facilities, hairdryer and there was plenty wardrobe space. The parking is limited but there is a twenty four hour car park a minutes walk away.

We were taken here by family for food as they had had several good meals here before. However we were very disappointed with our food this time. The cod loin from the specials menu was small, looked very unappetising, the broccoli well overcooked and as though the whole dish had been reheated in a microwave. We expressed our disappointment and a spoonful of 'smash' was added for which we were charged £2.29! The 'mashed potato' which also came with our pies was definitely out of a packet and again the vegetables were well overcooked/reheated. We also had to wait 45 minutes for our food and were served after another table who ordered after us. Unfortunately our relatives won't be returning again or recommending.

Brilliant! Staff could not have been more friendly (especially Adam who I had communication with before we came). Room spotless, bed comfortable. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Food good. Have stayed before and will definitely stay again! The only downside is there is no parking on site (but it is Aberdovey), there is a reasonably priced car park is just up the road.

Lovely welcome and good food. Excellent service and treated our dogs well with biscuits, blanket and water..good separation between dog friendly area for those that would prefer that option. Thankyou

I had a great stay at this hotel ! The manager Dav could not do enough to make my stay comfortable, as I am a sensitive coeliac he made sure that all my meals were completely gluten free. Barry was friendly and knowledgable and served me some fab wine 🍷 along with Shelley and Lauren who cheerfully looked after all my food requirements. My room was comfortable with every amenity, and a lovely balcony, all in all it was like home from home nothing was to much trouble.! I can fully recommend this hotel especially to people who are coeliac or have other food allergies An excellent hotel in a lovely village !!

Just stayed in the family apartment and had a great time . The room is an excellent location , large with an amazing sea view . Breakfast was amazing , loads of choice and all the staff we very friendly and helpful . Only a couple of things that were not great . The outside of the hotel needs a make over , it’s very tied and when you arrive could put you off. In the room the sofa beds were worn with rips on the cushions. Apart from this great time

Great to be back at the Penhelig and glad to see the refurbishment the refurbishment that is underway. Special thanks to Barry who always gives us a warm welcome and goes the extra mile. The Penhelig just wouldn't be the same without him, he is a credit to Marstons.

Very disappointing, tasteless, frozen veg and Yorkshire pudding, and thin slices of tasteless meat and bisto gravy. What a great shame!

Popped in for Sunday lunch and I must say it’s probably one of the nicest Sunday dinners I have had food wise,also lovely welcoming staff and a very relaxed atmosphere,just what we needed xx thanks rob

Revisited this pub after we visited in the summer when it was busy and had a decent lunchtime meal. This time it was early evening in November, very quiet, and a bit of a different experience. Unfortunately the staff weren’t very welcoming this time - in fact we were largely ignored at first. Took our order but with minimal interaction… just going through the motions as it were. We had the fish & chips and have to say it was lovely, crisp batter, nice white fish, homemade tartare sauce. For the money, the portions of chips were a bit mean though, and we aren’t being greedy, just expected a few more to fill our plates and satisfy our appetites. So overall, would we return? With the choice of other establishments in the area, not anytime soon I’m afraid, but our gripes aren’t anything that couldn’t be improved upon so never say never as the food is pretty decent.

We had a Family meal Lunch time it was very tasty and the plates which the lunch was served hot plates which was lovely,the Staff were also very accomadating with all our needs,xx we will be back soon .x

Last minute booking. Staff were very welcoming and attentive. Very supportive of my elderly mother. Food was of good standard The room/suite was clean, well equipped and comfortable - excellent value for money.

We noticed the FOOD HYGIENE RATING 2 out of 5 as we entered the property which immediately had us worried. The smell of stale gravy hits you and we were seated quickly. The waitress's iPad worked on the second attempt and our drinks order taken. On her return with said drinks and menus, we were informed there was no Fish and chips, no Hunters Chicken and no burgers at all. She referred to us collectively and Individually as "My lovelies" or "My lovely" which may sound friendly but I find it patronising and annoying. The table was sticky so after a quick vote we cancelled the drinks order and went elsewhere. I'd suggest you do the same.

Booked a table for 4 in advance for our 20th wedding anniversary. Staff were friendly but the meal was a little disappointing. Bread instead of toast, steak was so fatty and grizzly, 3 tiny prawns, pie was more pucker than homemade. Was in the restaraunt but no table service, no one came and asked if everything was alright. When waitress/barmaid cleared our plates she did ask one of our party was everything ok, their reply was The Pie was more Pucker than homemade her reply she just laughed.

Booked Sunday lunch, parked near the hotel in steep carpark good value. Menus provided and drinks ordered. Sunday lunch was served it arrived hot well presented by friendly staff, food was cooked and seasoned well a throughly tasty meal enjoyed by all four of us, deserts were also just as nice if not the best cheesecake I’ve tasted. Well done and thank you to all involved.

Es un establecimiento situado a la entrada del pueblo, junto a la carretera y frente al mar, nos sirvió suficientemente para pasar una noche. El pub estaba un poco sucio. La funda de nuestro nórdico tenía algunas manchas y solicitamos que nos lo cambiaran, algo que hicieron de inmediato y de forma amable. El restaurante es agradable, pero pedimos hasta tres platos de la carta y no los tenían. Finalmente tuvimos que conformarnos con lasaña y fish and chips.

As a large family group we pre booked. We were seated promptly and there was plenty of choice for the veggies in our party. The couple with dietary requirements were handled without fuss and the meals served with no undue delay. Everyone said that they had enjoyed the meal which was a first. Highly recommended.

Kebab was not as described on menu - scrape of sauce and one small piece of chicken and 2 burnt pieces of chorizo. Rest of kebsb was padded out with large pieces of onion. Hence, it was a horrible meal.

We have visited the Penhelig often and we always receive a great welcome the location is stunning and the drinks and food are wonderful. A special mention to June our breakfast waitress who is always cheerful and can’t do enough for you, will be back

Great terrace, excellent beers (esp Pedigree). Let down by limited food choice, even a lack of mustard for my steak (which was good). Surely a nationally owned pub has no supply chain issues?

this place has been a favourite for many years, but the last few times we have been disappointed with the food. Its just average, basic, lacks any presentation and not very good value for money. Nice surroundings to eat though, and the service was excellent!

Restaurant was fully booked so ate in the Bar area which was okay Staff very friendly. The mixed grill is a must but be hungry as there is plenty of it and was cooked lovely.

Contrasting with bite sized fine cuisine yesterday this was pub grub but very nicely cooked in a friendly and efficient restaurant. Nice vegan burger, great chips and a speedy service . Well worth a family visit.
