I hidden gem! Our airBnB suggested to go there, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was empty when we arrived, but we got a really warm welcome and outstanding food made fresh from locally sourced ingredients. The Snowdonia eggs were exceptional, a must try! Both the pie and the lasagna was amazing. We had a great time and a chat with the lovely waitress, we even got recommendation for a hike, what we did the next day, and had a great time! Thank you for the warm welcome, the great food and the recommendations! Highly recommended!

We popped in around 4pm for drinks after a lovely walk to the waterfalls. Served by a lovely young lady with a mixture of Australian and welsh accent who made us feel at home and gave us some info about how the pub is community owned and the times that meals are served. Great local beers…as we get fed up of most of the pubs being Robinsons. Might just have to give Sunday lunch a try…

Lovely community pub with tonnes of history. Dog friendly! Lovely friendly staff and a good range of drinks including a lovely cask ale brewed ten miles away. The exterior is a bit forbidding because they are in the midst of renovations, but the inside it’s great!

Dog and human friendly and helpful staff. Room was perfect, clean and had all that was required for a short stay. Breakfast was good and included in the price, as was the dog. View out of room is fantastic and the silence means we'll be coming back for another stay very soon. Only note is, check that food is being served for your evening meal. We drove out to eat and only knew the following morning we could have had food cooked there in our room. Missed out on a lovely Lamb burger, so other guests said.

This is a community pub with a lovely welcoming atmosphere, dont be put off by the appearance. We visited on the first day of opening for family drinks, the staff and regulars made us feel very welcome, and whilst they were not serving food due to lockdown, there is a good selection of local beers on offer at very reasonable prices. The staff and locals were a font of knowledge on the local area, it's history and the best walks to take.

The Sunday lunch was beautiful, with serious portions of meat and help yourself to the rest. We did not have a sweet, even though the choice looked heavenly.Great pint -- friendly , courteous , and welcoming staff .What more could you want from a venture entered into by the local community who bought the place some time ago, and have gained an excellent reputation for their food and customer care . Wishing them the very best for the future , keep it going --- we will definitely be back .

This is a community enterprise. In 2011, after the owner had decided to cease operations, a not-for-profit organisation took it over. Much of the work is done by volunteers. For that reason, reception is not staffed 24 hours a day. The room was clean and comfortable. All the staff are friendly and capable. The bar is well used and hospitable. The main problem for the enterprise is the state and quality of the building. The exterior needs refurbishment, the interior needs updating. Guests should not be surprised that the locals converse with one another in Welsh. It is their first language and their first choice for social interaction. They do not seek to exclude English-speakers. For the time of the year, sound value for money.

I stayed here while I went to zip world. I have to say when I arrived and saw the outside I thought my god as it looks terrible and not great.. But once inside the staff were very friendly the room was ok but did have damp spots which they said they were sorting out. The food was lovely very well priced and breakfast was continental if you wanted fried you had to pay ect but all good. I was disappointed that people had there dogs there as some was just barking all night so not good. Overall very friendly people with great food.

This community pub with rooms was welcoming and helpful to this cold, sodden cyclist last Monday evening. I had to abandon my cycle ride in the face of rain and wind and lack of protection from both! One male member of staff was particularly helpful, took my bike to lock it away, showed me my single room for only £31.50 for the one night and even showed me how to use the drier for my wet clothes. En suite with lovely hot shower and radiator soon saw me warm and comfortable, once more. A great night's sleep. THANK YOU PENGWERN. Tim Weller

Booked this place as it was close to the Zip World underground caverns experience which was fantastic. On arrival the place looked grubby and unwelcoming, nothing like the picture. We walked in and were hit by the overpowering doggy smell. The place is filthy. Our room was extremely grubby with wall paper coming off the walls. The en suite along with the rest of the room was dated with wall paper coming away from the walls. The breakfast room was cold and more like a storage room for all odds and ends of this and that. It was just a mess everywhere, and dirty! The only saving grace was the extremely comfy bed. £60 for a one night stay was daylight robbery. I think I should have been paid to stay there and even then I would decline the offer. Definitely will never stay there again. No understanding of customer service and cleanliness whatsoever. The kitchen was closed for a refurb, the whole place is in need of it. Shocking!

If ever there was a pub that could truly call itself "local" then this is it. It was saved, after closing down, by the local community and is run by them. Very nice and friendly in here and a decent enough selection of drinks and food.

From the moment we entered the place we felt at home. From behind the bar and within the public bar were friendly, smiling faces. We were shown to our three separate rooms, that is my son, my friend and myself, and all agreed, everything we needed for our comfort was in place. Next we enjoyed excellent beer and ordered a meal of good quality and quantity. My son had a guitar with him and we joined a group of friendly musicians from around 8.30 to 11 pm for memorable jammin, on a variety of instruments. The beer continued to flow and so did friendly conversatons with local people. All in all a memorable evening! After a good nigh'ts sleep, we enjoyed a more than adequate breakfast, served by one of the community volunteers. My son and I hope to visit again later in the year, all the way from the Norfolk coast. Well done everyone involved in a wonderful community effort. Cheers!

I believe it to be run by the locals, opening times are hit and miss as is the food. Menu is limited and quite often 2 or 3 meals are unavailable due to supplier issues? Staff were friendly so not all bad however the interior / exterior decor leave a lot to be desired.

Stayed here in July. The staff made us feel really welcome. Had a great evening with the locals playing live music. This hotel is ideally situated for trips to Snowdonia and Portmeirion. The local waterfalls are also within easy walking distance.

It was not easy finding anywhere open on a Monday night in October so our options were limited. The menu looked promising - several veggie dishes, one of which was vegan. The Thai vegetable curry was awful - watery and so spicy that it was actually impossible to eat. The chef can't have tasted this dish whilst making it. The other 2 meals tasted okay but had been precooked and reheated in the microwave (we could even hear the distinctive ping coming from the kitchen). Waitress was very apologetic and told us the chef wasn't in that night, so the food obviously wasn't freshly made. They refunded the cost of the curry. The dining room was also freezing cold and had no atmosphere at all (total silence, as there were only 2 other people eating there - a bit of music would have helped).Maybe we just caught them on a bad day.

What a treat to find such friendly people running a pub which helps walkers and locals get fed and refreshed. A kind gentleman unlocked the pub especially to let me get in to use the loo before the walk, and he was so nice we booked in for lunch. Then for £8 we had lamb or beef roast lunch. Fabulous meet, and excellent roast potatoes and five different veg to choose from including roasted butternut squash and cheesy leaks. A wonderful pub. Does what it needs to do and more. Just don't expect leather armchairs and gastro pub fair and you will be delighted.

I had an excellent local ale (from down the road) - just what was needed after a days mountain biking. Awful experience. We arrived around 2 pm, and we asked what the soup was. We were told it was Parsnip and immediately ordered. The member of staff went to the kitchen to ask something and then came out to say they are no longer serving food. We found this odd given that she had just confirmed the soup with the kitchen, and the cafe is open until 4 pm. Fair enough if we were trying to order at 3.45pm, but this was at 2pm. We ordered coffees and welsh cakes, which took 20 minutes to come (cafe was empty, save for ourselves). The rude member of staff then slammed them on the table, didn't even take the items off the tray, and walked off. Never have I had such an awful customer service experience. Complete letdown to what is a lovely area.

A most welcoming local pub with an excellent chef who happily adapted starters into a main for me - veggie! Although menu catered for everyone. Mine hosts were so cheerful & hardworking - many could take a leaf out of their books! The place was absolutely buzzing with people of all ages - locals & holidaymakers having the time of their lives singing along to the live musician of the evening who sang everything from Beatles/John Denver to modern day...talented chap! We will definitely be back - next time we may stay if not during the summer months, perhaps for an Autumn/Spring walking holiday!
