The Pelham was chosen in preference to the white hart as the latter only had tables available in a dog friendly area. Find myself in the restaurant area of the Pelham with 3 dogs around us. Used to be that dogs were only allowed in the bar. Disappointed that they now make it into the restaurant too.

3 of us came here yesterday for a post-hike roast and beer. They have their own range of craft beer, and a good selection of real ale. I had one of the 3 veggie roast options. It was fantastic. The Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli, swede/sweet potato mash and gravy were absolutely in the top 5 roasts I've had. My friends had the lamb shoulder and chicken. They both said it was seriously good. We didn't have room for dessert but the options looked decent both on the menu and on other diners tables. The bar staff were knowledgeable about the beers and whoever was chef knows how to cook well. Absolutely recommend a Sunday Roast here!

Probably the best pub in Lewes for food - very good quality and generous portions. A bit pricey but well worth it. The location is cosy in authentic English style. Great table service. The acoustic is good even when the pub is full. Delicious Christmas roast turkey in the photo.

NO ONE can visit Lewes for a day because you'll run the possibility of missing this beautiful location. The brilliant and wonderful front of house staff combined with a truly divine though unseen and often unheard back of house team, deliver one of the TOP ROASTS in Sussex and easily one of the best pub menus the town and possibly the county has to offer. This IS a must visit. It's respectfully priced and rightfully busy on a Sunday, so try to book in advance. If you don't have a booking, take a blanket and wrap up warm as you can always sit outside and beat the waiting time as they're very accommodating (though I would check the forecast for rain).

Greatly enjoyed a Sunday lunch last week, super service, plates hot, portions good. Very tasty meal, only minor negatives but the beef could be better than just Topside, roast rib or sirloin is far nicer and full of flavour particularly if slow cooked, I am sure the quality butcher coukd supply those cuts of beef. Cauliflower cheese was nice, but the cheese sauce needs to be thick and gloopy, not thin soup like. Other than that, this place is hard to beat. Highly recommended.

Great place for Sunday lunch, really good service, staff friendly and polite. The meals served on hot plates and quickly too, ample portions, well presented and all very tasty indeed, lunch was so filling puddings were not sampled. Next time! Only negatives, the beef was only Topside, not the best or most flavoursome cut. Rib roast or Sirloin would be much better particularly if slow cooked. Also the cauliflower cheese extra side dish whilst tasty and ample in size should have a thick gloopy cheese sauce, not thin and watery. Other than that, perfect place for Sunday lunch out and food value considering the quality.

The worst and most expensive pub food I've had in a long time. We had the beef burger which was truly awful and almost inedible. The very small bun was dry, hard and obviously old. The two small beef patties were also very dry, overcooked, chewy and hard and there was not much other filling except sauce. The server asked me if everything was ok, I told him what I thought and he just muttered something and walked off. And all that for £18.50, one of the most expensive burgers I've ever had. The chips were ok. My daughter had the chicken burger which rather than being golden brown was a dark brown colour as it was completely overcooked and tasted burnt. It was horrible. This was followed by a ramekin sized fruit crumble. The topping was very dry, tasted burnt, and like sand in the mouth. The filling was overly sweet and jam like. Served with average custard, and £8. So over £26 for two courses of awful food. We'll never be going back that's for sure.

Our recent visit to The Pelham Arms was a mixed experience. As a group of ten, we found it challenging to choose from the menu, which seemed to feature a lot of fried options—though perhaps that’s just our personal opinion. We also found the prices to be on the higher side. The service was notably slow, which was disappointing given the pub’s otherwise pleasant atmosphere. That said, it’s clearly a popular spot with the locals, which added to the lively vibe. While we enjoyed the setting, we’re not sure we’d return for a meal, as the food didn’t quite match the price and the wait time.

Very disappointing. To me, two goujons of fish and skin on fries isn’t what I expect from fish and chips in a pub. I’m not a big eater, but even I was left hungry by the portion size. This would not satisfy most people. I do suspect that they had almost run out of fish, but they should have said so.

Went Sunday evening, was the only place in the area we could find serving a Sunday roast past 5pm. We had roast pork and beef, both fantastic, cabbage especially. I would say if you're offering a gluten free alternative on the roast, it should be a gf Yorkshire pudding, not just removing a regular one from the meal. Dessert each too. We booked the Pelham Arms for lunch for a party of eight people yesterday. We were having a civil partnership at the registry office so wanted to find somewhere nice for lunch afterwards. I was really impressed by the online menus and how well they catered to vegans as well as food intolerances, both of which applied to a few people in our group, but alongside serving very traditional pub fare too, so we made a booking. I’m so glad we did. The pub is so lovely, and the servers so helpful. The food was spot on. I would hugely recommend the chicken schnitzel in bacon and leek sauce, it’s massive, and I can genuinely say it’s one of the best meals I’ve had in ages. It all made a perfect day even more special, and I’m so grateful to everyone at the Pelham Arms. Thank you!

We visited the Pelham Arms today for lunch, and walked away so impressed. I’d called the day before to book a table, and was told they had a large party in, so to get a table as early as possible. This was totally fine, but unfortunately the traffic was against us (we were coming from an hour away to meet family). The staff were mega chilled when we arrived, and put us under no pressure to order, despite obviously being really busy. Every member of staff was super friendly, very happy to answer any questions, smiley – everything you want! There were nine of us, including four children who all ate free – this is really quite unbelievable, actually considering the quality of the fish and chips. My husband, who is a burger aficionado, had the brisket burger and said it was the best burger he had in really long time. I had the Thai vegetable curry, which I was a bit nervous about, but it was stunning. The staff were clearly pushed with this large group of people who then all ordered food – but you wouldn’t have known they were even flustered. We will be making the drive again just to come back. Thank you!

Called up on Saturday (10th February) and asked whether they had space for 15 people to eat which they confirmed they did. Spoke to the Landlord who served us all drinks (over £200 for us all) and showed us to our seats. As soon as we sat down, he said the kitchen was closed and that the chefs are refusing to cook anymore food. His mood changed from happy, recommending dishes etc to 'Unfortunately that's the way it is' after taking £200 from us. Stuck up vibe and beyond a joke. Not a fan.

What a disappoinment. The place looked tired, the tables were sticky, the choice of draught beers was poor, the atmposphere was non-existent, the dishes were over-priced, not 'proper' pub food, more dressed up to be something it wasn't and certainly didn't live up to the hype on their website. The Irish coffee was virtually undrinkable and after 2 attempts to make it, it was still undrinkable, as was the Americano. Suggest they also look at the spelling on the board outside! The fish and chips were superb; three small fillets of cod in a light crispy batter, very good fries and plenty of them, plus outstanding home-made tartare sauce (Mmmm!), and mushy peas. £18, so at the top end of today's gastro pub pricing for this dish, but worth it. But a 250 ml glass of Shiraz was £10.50. This is bonkers, in my humble opinion. Other drinks ordered were similarly expensive. Net result? We didn't order a second round of drinks, and neither did we order sweets (£8), despite the latter having been highly recommended. "Do the math", as the Americans say; if the wine had been £7.50 a large glass, and the sweets had been (say) £7, we would have ordered two rounds of drinks instead of one, and as a consequence we would have each ordered a sweet. So increase in revenue to the pub from our party of four would have been no less than £46, while the incremental cost to the pub would have been a fraction of that sum. Added to which we would be back there in short order. That's what's known as win-win, Mr Pelham. 😉 Think about it....

Considering the Pelham serves one of the most expensive roasts in Lewes one would expect it to be of higher quality. Unfortunately the potatoes were hard and not crispy or fluffy inside and the beef had a chewy texture. The vegetarian cheddar wellington was however delicious and there were no problems with service. Left full but slightly disappointed. I do hear that their Gourmet burgers are sublime so perhaps avoid the roast dinners.

Food has always been good. Be aware though that the prices for beer are off the scale! How can it be reasonable to charge over £17 for 2 pints and 2 packets of crisps? The beer tasted good, Abyss Hazy IPA. But not that good. There is no price list on display so you don't know how much it's going to cost before you order. So, I'm going to do the only thing I can which is to take my custom elsewhere. It's a nice pub but the prices are just wrong. There was an article about it in the local paper but I had thought that the crazy prices were for niche beers from rare breweries. You have been warned!!

All that was gone was the cauliflower cheese & everything was as fresh as could be. Six of us had a variety of roasts - beef, chicken & pork & it was all excellent. Light & crispy Yorkshire puds, lovely roast potatoes, fresh greens, tasty gravy. One friend had cheesecake which disappeared very quickly; my son & I shared the British cheeses with fruit, celery & crackers; the cheeses were in perfect condition & a generous amount. An excellent low alcohol beer. The only disappointment was the house red which was pretty horrible; I should have asked for something else but we British are not very good at that are we? The service was efficient & friendly. All in all very good indeed.

We had three Roast Beef- melt in the mouth meat, plenty of it. We ordered extra gravy & cauliflower cheese, which was one, if not the best, we all had with a Roast so far. The gravy boat was huge, all vegetables were cooked to perfection & the Yorkies were also perfect. Service was quick and very friendly. I was impressed with the alternative meals on the menu, the lighter roasts looked perfect for the summer. Selection of beers & wine very good and I do love the interior of the pub- the old fire place is beautiful, as is the rest of the pub. Highly recommended as parking no trouble across the road at County Hall (at least at the weekend). You could taste the passion for food in every mouthful- will definately be back to try the week menu as well. Selection of deserts was also impressive and mouthwatering. A true gem for food & drink in Lewes!

Not recommended. Nice pub with small garden but very poor food. Cajun chicken burger was undercooked and oily with way too much salt. Nonplussed staff service.

My partner and I had an amazing lunch here. The food was top quality and the wine was excellent. We were recommended an English wine, which was lovely.

Pelham House is a true gem in the heart of Lewes, blending historic charm with contemporary elegance to create a wedding venue like no other. As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing unforgettable moments at this Grade II listed townhouse, and it never fails to leave a lasting impression.

Not recommended. We waited an hour to be served. Everything was flooded in gravy sauce and too sweet! The worst nachos we have ever had!

This is a rather nice café in a beautiful location looking over the Downs north of Peacehaven - and adjacent to probably the best children’s playground I’ve ever seen, built entirely of wood and other sustainable materials. The café is light, bright and with a good menu including all the usual coffees, teas, cooked breakfasts, and the usual range of sandwiches. There’s plenty of cakes on display and an ice-cream chest freezer. In the summer they have tables outside with umbrellas so people could enjoy the sun in this lovely vacation. Disabled loo (plus another outside, a local authority loo with disabled access and changing facilities). Local history exhibition, sadly partly blocked by the ice-cream chest and tables. My only caveat is that the menu no longer includes Greek style salads although you can get salads with the sandwiches. I would like to see more healthy options instead of the inevitable sausages, bacon and other fried foods that seem to be a staple in the cafés in this town. The café is very very. popular with dog walkers and mum and baby/toddler groups. Staff are efficient, polite and entirely tolerant of lairy dogs and toddlers.

Edit: went there on Saturday and for the first time had a really poor meal. Three of us were dining. The place was really cold as the staff hadn't lit the fires in the morning. There was no sign of the landlord or anyone really running the place. We waited an hour for some (very simple) food from the specials board and it was extremely disappointing. Very, very bland, with bread served without butter, meals served without condiments. We had to keep asking. You don't need catering training for this. I was really surprised at this experience. Usually you walk in on a cold day and there is a fire blazing, the landlord is there, the service is very good, the food arrives in a reasonable time and is very nice. This time everything was like the bad old days of pub dining but with very modern pricing. The ale was good and that's all the positivity I can offer. If this place has changed hands and/or this is the new normal then it's a real shame. My old 5 star review is here: I'm not a regular but do go here for lunch every now and then. I guess I've been going there occasionally since 2015 or 2016. The ale is always excellent. There always seems to be Harvey's best Bitter, Dark Star and a few other ales and a range of lagers. It has always been a friendly and welcoming place whether packed out or quiet. I've never had a disappointing meal there. Nobody is pretending to be a Masterchef wannabe but it is always really good. I have a vegetarian meal and my Mum usually has a fish or meat dish. We both enjoy it. She tells me that their Pinot Grigio and white Rioja are perfectly good. This week I had the vegetarian sausages with gravy, greens, mashed potatoes, carrots and swede and it was delicious. A pint of Harveys Best was my aperitif and a pint of Dark Star went down nicely with the meal. It was a sunny, warm day so we ate outside and it was very pleasant indeed. My Mum had a baguette with avocado and bacon and really liked it. She spends half her life in France so when she says the bread is good it's really good!
