Well kept secret! Although this hotel is in centre of town the restaurant is surprisingly quiet. Not frequented by many locals. The food here is excellent. Great menu, every course we had was delicious. Our party had beautiful cheese soufflés, seafood pappardelle, cod, and chicken mains, all well presented and tasty. Lovely desserts too. A couple of bottles of wine reasonably priced. Everyone enjoyed the dinner and would definitely make a return visit.

Before I get into it, the food tasted good. However. One time I visited the KFC in the town centre and ordered a burger. After an extensive wait for fast food I sat down and finally began to eat. When I opened my burger box there was no top bun, just some sad chicken on limp lettuce and the bottom half of a burger bun. When I went to get this fixed I had to queue for a further ten minutes to speak to a server, and when they did get to me a got a non committal grunt and an unwashed, ungloved cash handling hand plopped another piece of bread on top and walked away. I consider my experience at peace and plenty to be roughly equal. It took a long time to order. It took an eternity for the food to actually arrive. I will concede there was a table of ten getting their food in between those two, but as literally the only other table I do not consider the wait times to be justified. During the wait there was no music, no atmosphere, and a general air of just no-one being bothered. We ordered some drinks about 5 minutes before the food arrived. We did ask for them again as people were finishing their meals. The wine arrived pretty sharply at that point but the two cokes did not arrive until after everyone had finished eating. Apparently they were just changing the line, but perhaps that could have been mentioned before we'd already waited 15 minutes for them and chased it up. As for the drinks, we were asked if we wanted a pint or half pint. On requesting a pint we received pint glasses with close to an inch of air at the top. This was the case for both diet and regular Coke. When receiving the bill we noticed that the cokes on the bill were 2.50 for a pint, but the cokes purchased from the bar in between were 3.00 a pint. When questioned we were fed some nonsense about bottles and draught, but at no point had it been mentioned, and every glass came the same way. Portions were small. They tasted fine, but for the prices on the menu there was less than there should be. We had some vouchers that made them reasonable for the end price, but at full price I'd have been annoyed. The vouchers were mentioned when ordering, but not applied to the bill before it was sent to us, so that should have no bearing. I wouldn't say the staff were rude as such, but they seemed very uninterested and made no effort to interact, aside from one (ginger?) lad who brought some drinks to us from the bar and actually seemed to give a damn. The evening was topped off with a tremendous fart from one of the staff. I know these things happen but it really did seal the deal for us. Overall, would not recommend.

Having already been to the Peace & Plenty restaurant in Decemember for sunday with Santa i decided to go back again with my mam and two children as we really enjoyed it the first time we visited & again the food & service didnt dissapoint. It was another delicious three course meal I had the haggis bon bons, the beef(main was beautiful, beef was cooked perfectly & the garlic mash soo good) then the Vanilla cheesecake with the blueberry compote & my mam had the garlic mushrooms, beef and Lemon posset, then the two children had cumberland sausage, mash & yorkies. The complimentary bread and water is always a nice touch when waiting for your meal to arrive. The operations manager Alistair is very good with the customers & especially with the children and has a brilliant sense of humour that just makes everyone in the restaurant laugh, which makes the atmosphere in there even better & he really gives it that extra finesse a restaurant needs to run well. Its a lovely family friendly restaurant that i would be happy visiting even on non special occasions too. The new menu i looked at sounds really tasty & its somewhere i feel very comfortable to take my children without judgement that you may get at some nice restaurants. Thank you very much for another pleasant meal.

Opted for a dinner, bed and breakfast package at the Crown & Mitre. Worth every single penny. The menu had a good choice and each dish was piping hot with decent portions. Haggis, neeps and tatties to start, fresh bread on the side, followed by a traditional turkey roast with all the trimmings, and finished with a generous helping of sticky toffee pudding, sauce and ice cream. Totally scrumptious! All washed down by a fabulous bottle of wine. The tables are all laid out and set out nicely, the lighting and music is subdued which is a nice touch, the decor is quirky and there is a pleasant atmosphere throughout. None of this would have been possible without the ever attentive Tracy and the young lady working with her last Saturday evening. Top marks also to the hotel management and kitchen teams. Thank you everyone for a wonderful birthday meal, we only just realised that you are open to the public and we will be back!

Refurbed about 3 years ago; it's very quiet, comfortable and with a great range of well-prepared dishes (for lunch). Just walk straight through Crown & Mitre Hotel entrance and it's on the left in the centre passageway; you can also sit in the right-hand room, in a larger bar lounge room. Excellent service and food.

The chefs worked extremely hard to produce a wonderful plate of lamb. The gravy it came with was sublime, carrots and potatoes were brilliant. Very well balanced, in colours, textures, seasoning and flavour. I think that a number of new restaurant staff have just started.

Excellent meal. We were staying at the hotel anyway and the weather was not very good so booked the restaurant. So glad. Excellent service. The starter of braised beef cheeks were superb. To follow I had the pork and black pudding wellington which was lovely, my wife decided on a steak burger thinking it would be just a small meal. It was gigantic. Just like in the USA. Had to help her finish. Both really stuffed. Would have loved the cheese and biscuits

Had a lovely meal with my daughter and friend today 7th August. Have been coming here for nearly 3 years now and I recommend to all my friends and family. I absolutely love this place. It's great for a private chat hence the name. Today we arrived ten minutes early but it was no problem at all. We were told they didn't serve food for another ten minutes but to take a seat and someone would be with us shortly. Only waited five minutes and the waitress took our order. I had a jacket potatoes with two fillings a lime and soda and a cappuccino. My daughter had a chicken fajita wrap with salad and a pot of tea. Excellent value just over £19.00. We got up to pay and because the waitress was busy the manager took our payment. He asked if everything was ok I said lovely as always. He was busy dealing with something else as he spoke on his walkie talkie but he still managed a smile and a quick chat while he took our payment. Really enjoyed my time in peace and plenty. It was lovely🤗.

Unfortunately the small restaurant was closed (private function) however we were told that we were welcome to eat in the bar area. We were looked after today by Sean, who was very pleasant and friendly. My daughter had the Chicken Fajita wrap and I had the Duck Hoisin wrap. Both were well presented and tasty although my daughter wishes there had been some Salsa with hers. Not too expensive and we never felt rushed to leave. Thank you.

I took my 90 year old Aunt and teenage daughter for lunch as we were thinking of booking for Christmas dinner and thought we would try the food first before we booked for the big day. One of the worst decisions I have made to say unappetising and unpalatable was an understatement. I ordered the turkey club which the waitress assumed was something else as she came back and asked if I wanted vegetables with the meal, however she did apologise and returned to the kitchen to order said club sandwich, 40 minutes later it arrived made with burnt black toast, hard and dried out fatty bacon and extremely dried out pieces of turkey with the skin still on. The waitress offered to exchange, however I refused as It would have delayed everyone. My Aunt ordered a chicken ceasar wrap which she barely touched, no wonder as when I went to pay the bill I discovered they had given her Cajun chicken! My daughter opted for Tahoe cahicken fajita wrap which was also extremely annoying spicy and she too left half. I did make a complaint to the Manager who gave me a £10 note by way of compensation and stated that he hoped we would return.

On an overnight stay in Carlisle before a family event a fortnight ago, we went to the Cathedral for a beautiful Choral Evensong, followed by a delicious evening meal in the Peace and Plenty restaurant. The bread selection with oils got the meal off to a flying start: hot, home-baked breads. Starters of salmon tian and a miniature haggis, neaps and tatties were tasty. Mains of pan fried hake and pan fried chicken breast were well cooked and accompanied by generous dish of fresh vegetables. Desserts and coffee were really enjoyable too. Having read mainly positive reviews for this restaurant we booked a table for a family evening meal. The restaurant was empty when we arrived which suited us fine, and the décor although a bit random was interesting ,and the staff were helpful. However every person and there were several of us ,was disappointed with some or all of their food. The prawn and avocado salad was drowned in an oily and generally tasteless dressing the beetroot risotto was cold and only the melon and the haggis were given good reports .The traditional roast turkey was good but it came with gravy already served on it ,when a separate gravy boat would have been more appropriate. The sea bass was also ok ,and the selection of vegetables fine but in fortunately every one complained that the food was fairly cold when it reached us the explanation given was that the kitchens are a fair way from the restaurant. The real problem came with dessert ,with the Christmas pudding being almost inedible as it appeared to have been re heated in microwave oven for too long and the salted caramel cheesecake which was purportedly "home made " was completely tasteless and I would be surprised if it wasn't bought in in bulk. The wine list was fine and the staff very pleasant but overall we felt the food should have been of better quality.

Hotel was very busy not many in peace and plenty but obviously kitchen couldn't cope. I had omelette on specials which was good last time. It was well over cooked sparse filling no cheese which I asked for served on a cold plate obviously been sitting around so barely warm. Overlooked well browned chips. Tea was stewed water not hot enough. I ate it but did complain when asked how meal was. She offered to knock my meal off but we had one free anyway. Didn't knock off the drinks which would have been nice. Therefore we vote with our feet and won't go back and also word of mouth gets around. Shame really.

Four of us had lunch here. It was 40 years since I was a regular in the Railway Tavern and Peace & Plenty Bar and I was delighted to see most of the original decor has been preserved , creating a very pleasant room for dining.Friendly, helpful staff and a relaxing 2 hour restaurant menu lunch ensued, but a few niggles I'm afraid - a prawn salad starter @ £5.75 comprising 3 prawns with bits of lettuce and very finely chopped peppers which proved impossible to extricate from the coupe glass they were in, with the knife & fork provided was a disappointment. Also, the sticky toffee pudding @ £5.95 was not great, as it was obvious the large cube of sponge had been a stranger any sauce until just before it was served - an old trick of the pub trade, I often find. Other than that, we all enjoyed lunch and the Gavi vino was so good we had a second bottle, which even at the price of £27.50 a bottle we considered a bargain restaurant price. Total cost of lunch for four: £161.50We think the bar menu looks better value and will try that next time.

The food was excellent and the staff were first class. I didn't think the service would be that good at first because they all looked very young. Maybe this is me getting older. Oh dear! The service couldn't have been better. We had a great meal off the set menu and plenty of banter with the staff. We even booed the manager. There was a good range of food available, and we both decided on a salad of grilled halloumi on a salad of rocket, spinach and watercress and dressed with orange segments, toasted walnuts, mint and a white wine vinaigrette. It was delicious, one of the best salads we have ever had when eating out. As we were due to go to another talk on the following evening, held in a nearby bookshop, we decided to book for an early dinner, and found the food to be equally good and imaginative - we both had fish, my husband had salmon, coated in crushed peppercorns, served on a bed of chickpeas and spinach, and I had red snapper, served on a courgette, pea and red pepper risotto. We were both delighted with our starters as well. We were very impressed with the friendly, helpful and very professional service we received - special thanks go to Kayleigh and Chantelle. We couldn't fault the standards of cleanliness in the restaurant and bar, glasses sparkled and all the cutlery was smear free - we watched the care with which the staff examined, and polished each piece. The decor of both the restaurant and the hotel was attractive and restful - it was very easy to feel relaxed! This was our first visit, but it certainly won't be our last!

Love this restaurant. Cheeky head waiter likes a bit of banter, very professional. Well timed courses beautifully presented and very well cooked. Staff have always been great. Not too much on the menu but enough for most. I make a point of visiting regularly.

My wife and I ate in this restaurant while we were on a short break in Carlisle. The atmosphere was welcoming and the decor bright and cheerful. Service was very efficient and the staff were helpful without being intrusive. The menu was suitably varied and represented very good value for money. The food was simply cooked but tasty.

HiBooked a dbb deal at the crown and mitre hotel in Carlisle. This was the place we had our evening meal. Food was lovely and very large portions - which always goes down well with the family. Give it a go you wont be disappointed. Good prices for what you get.

14 friends met up for lunch. The menu is comprehensive, reasonably priced and the dining room pleasant and airy. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the service was excellent and we were all served together. Everyone enjoyed their meals and we were not rushed, allowing us to chat without feeling we should be vacating the dining room.

I don't normally aim for hotel restaurants when seeking a basic meal. But, it's Monday and several of the city eateries are closed. HOORAY! We found Peace and Plenty; what a delight! Our food is terrific and the 60s retro dining room adds to the experience as does walk through the early 1900s hotel lobby and bar area. Give it a try!

Great food from an interesting menu. Good service. Wanted to try somewhere different and remembered a feature in the cumberland news. Shared a starter of croquettes that was delicious and we both enjoyed our individual mains of lamb and braiesd pig cheek.

we ordered the salmon and steak. Both cooked to perfection. The staff made sure that the chef understood how specially rare I wanted my steak. The restaurant is decorated with modern lighting and part of an antique carousel. This works very well and gives the restaurant a unique style. The friendly and helpful staff gave an excellent service and the prices are decent. We recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the charming city of Carlisle.

Eight of us were on a coach trip to Carlisle. We wanted a nice place for lunch and chose the Peace and Plenty in the Crown and Mitre Hotel. The prices were very reasonable. Our order was taken and drinks served which came with a jug of iced water all very nice. All our meals arrived together and were all piping hot and delicious. Our initial reception however was a little frosty so to the manager I want to say be a little more welcoming because the food experience was all down to your super efficiency. Also perhaps a menu outside and even consider lunch specials say 2 courses for £15... just a suggestion. Would definitley return

Had a wonderful meal last night in the Peace & Plenty at the Crown & Mitre. Its been redecorated and is looking really good, especially the funky lights! The new menu is on the mark and all the food we ate was fantastic, especially the haggis, neeps & tatties, the lamb and the pea risotto. Drinks reasonably priced. Service was really good, there are not many places in Carlisle where you get service of that standard. Thanks for a lovely evening!

The staff are very helpful and make you feel welcome. I visit here quite often with friends. The music is subdued and my hard of hearing friends find it easy to join in the conversations. Drinks are reasonably priced and the bacon sandwich is delicious.

We had a family meal together on Saturday night in the Peace and Plenty Restaurant before going to a show nearby. We were made very welcome with service being very efficient and friendly. Having never dined here before we did not know what to expect. The portions were quite ample, with large portions of mixed vegetables as side orders to accompany the main dishes. The roast lamb on red cabbage was delicious and perfectly cooked as I wanted it. The vegetables were perfect also, and not overdone and mushy as they can be in some places. Our daughter had a lovely piece of salmon in peppercorns and son-in-law a very nicely done steak. Staff were very attentive and we would definitely dine there again if we were in Carlisle. The menu was not very large, but there should be something to suit everyone. Compliments to the chef.

I went last Wednesday night to try out the new menu. I had the pork cheeks to start which were very nice. Then I had the red snapper on risotto for my main course which was excellent, the fish was cooked very well with lots of flavour and the risotto and stock accompanied the fish perfectly. I would come back again for the dishes on this menu. Restaurant staff were friendly and professional. I also had one of the bottled ales which was great as previously I had not been able to get any real ales. Compliments to the chefs.

Having booked into The Crown & Mitre for a short break my partner and I found ourselves feeling a bit tired in the evening and rather than go out looking for a restaurant decided to dine in the hotel. I am not a fan of restaurants in chain hotels as a rule and didn't have high expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised by the swift and efficient service. I was pleasantly taken aback by the large portion sizes and the lovely presentation of high quality food. The flavours were excellent and at the prices you would struggle to do better anywhere. I would definitely dine here again (regardless of where I was staying although the hotel was also very good)
