Papavero Restaurant in Edinburgh, City of

We had a fantastic evening last night at Papavero. We were a sizeable group. Greg and his team couldn’t have been more accommodating. The food was excellent, the service superb and they were very patient when we sat on. Thank you for a terrific evening!

Went here with friends, 2 pizzas, completely crispy too hard to cut, taste was ok but really struggled to cut through with my friend giving up after 2 slices. The mixed grill was 20p wee Willy winky sausages, frozen hamburger, the 5cm cubed of steak was ok and the haggis was a sloppy thing that looked like it fell out of an air vent. Tortellini pasta was ok. Garlic bread was cheap white bread with butter and garlic salt, service was really slow despite being the only people in there for 30 minutes. The calamari was in slivers. Brought friends here and completely ruined their stay in Edinburgh as well as our own evening all left really really disappointed and went to get food elsewhere after spending £100 here and all being very very disappointed

We went on a Saturday night, very welcoming, very relaxed, and the food was brilliant. Definitely worth a visit!

Visited whilst in Edinburgh. Waited over an hour for starters to be served - Bruschetta & Focaccia, which were not worth the wait! Mains courses appeared appropriately 40 minutes after we had finished the starters and I have never seen such a small piece of Salmon (£15.95) and I paid £3.50 extra for the vegetables. The salmon was very dry so they offered to cook me another piece a different way! Meantime I was so hungry that I ate the chips & veg then waited for a piece of salmon to be cooked- this was quite tasty, but had to be eaten on its own. We had already spent so long there we declined coffee & sweets - we were however given a liqueur. The restaurant only had 12 diners (& one takeaway order) but everyone experienced similar delays. The waitress did her best, but it all took too long. Ambience was lacking - more like a diner than Italian restaurant.

We had caprese salad followed by the house tagliatelle and a pizza- delicious and fresh. Once again our host was kind, friendly, and in good spirits despite 18 months of covid business issues. Thanks again!

Another lovely evening spent at Papavero. Great food and attentive staff. We always make time to visit when in Edinburgh

Me and my boyfriend visited this restaurant on Sunday 15th Aug in the evening. It was a really quirky place with a very warm and friendly atmosphere. Jagode was fantastic and looked after us from start to finish. We were so impressed with her efficiency and warm nature. We would also like to thank Gregor the chef for such wonderful food. The pasta dishes were outstanding, so much so that we have re-booked for one final meal before returning to London. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

The four of us dined here during a 3 night stay in Edinburgh. What a fantastic place! We were eating early and the restaurant was empty when we arrived. It didnt feel awkward as the waitress made us so welcome and chatted to us like we were old friends. Our food was hot and delicious. Lots more people turned ip as we were eating but our waitress was still as attentive. Would definitely recommend

The lack of customers in this restaurant should have indicated to us to not go in but the 5 star reviews kept our hopes high. These hopes were quickly starting to drop when I was served what looked and tasted like cheese on toast for a starter. I was still hopeful for the main but was also massively disappointed when after a fairly long wait (considering there was one other table in the restaurant at this point) a watery, flavourless carbonara was placed in front of me. I naively thought that carbonara wouldn’t be hard to get right in an Italian restaurant. I’m not one to write bad reviews but I’m writing it to just suggest it may not be worth the visit. The one good thing about this place was the fact they did accept taste card which reduced the price of the meal. Just a few minor improvements would have brought this review up massively.

Absolute gem of a restaurant. Incredibly warm and welcoming - especially with our 2 children. The chef even came to speak to us after. Everything was prepared from fresh and the pasta and pizza were delicious as was the duck. Such a lovely place, very authentic - would thoroughly recommend and wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

What a little gem this restaurant is. A shame it was so quiet but the food was excellent. Piping hot and full of flavour. The Tortellini in Bolognese sauce was fantastic. A bit of a way out of Princess Street but worth the walk. Go on and give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

We booked a table a few weeks ago for on of our evenings during a week's holiday in Edinburgh and we received an email confirmation On arrival at the appointed date and time we found the restaurant closed: no sign of life and no answer to the phone number on the window or on our booking confirmation (which were different). After waiting 20 mins beyond our reservation time we enquired with a nearby (non-food) business and were advised that "the have been opening sporadically". Maybe an email advising us they wouldn't be open would have been polite?

Not been in over a year but still the same great food and wonderful service, will return soon. Hopefully things will return to normality soon.

This restaurant has been a favourite of ours for a number of years. So good to see Gregory having survived lockdown and reopening. Food is always consistently good matched by the friendly service. During these tough times restaurants like this deserve to build their business back up. We will be back to support this great little business.

Lovely little find. Food was freshly cooked and the service was very attentive. Social distancing was adhered to at all times. Would definitely recommend as the food was excellent and very reasonably priced.

Lovely antipasto meat starter followed by a lovely spaghetti carbonara. The food was delicious but a little too much as I couldn’t finish it (gutting because I hate food waste). The waiter was also lovely, friendly and chatty, would recommend.

Arrived at 17.50 when table was booked,the restaurant was very cold,my wife ate her dinner with her jacket on,food wasn’t very good,and it’s certainly not Italian

Lovely dinner here with a friend, able to chat and relax with great food and excellent service.The menu is extensive Italian/Scottish and there should certainly be something to please everyone.We had the Haggis starter which was lovely and substantial. I then had a pizza and my friend had fish with risotto. It was all cooked beautifully and there was no chance we were leaving hungry.Wine was also good and all in all a really nice evening. Would definitely recommend.Don’t wear skimpy clothing if dining early, as a little chilly until things get going- worth wearing a jumper though!

My wife and I visited papavero again recently for lunch. Great quality and value lunch with Gregory in the kitchen doing a terrific job. We will be back soon!

Had a table booked for a group of friends. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff and guessing not their fault. the starter took an hour and the entire two courses took over 3 hours. We did not leave as it was raining and Luckily we had plenty of chat to keep us going but they really should have told us in advance. The food was good actually when it arrived but won’t be going back.

Starters came before we got our coats off, then we had to put them on again whilst waiting on our main courses. Food was nice, service staff were pleasant, felt for them having to face the wrath of tables waiting.

We visited this restaurant on a Wednesday evening having read many good reviews. Unfortunately we were extremely disappointed. Only ones in the restaurant and having eaten I’m not surprised. Food was all frozen and vegetables overcooked. Came out stinking of greece and feeling uncomfortably sorry for the poor waiter.

This Italian restaurant is our favourite place to eat in all of Edinburgh, the food is to die for and the staff cant do enough for you, it is only 5 minutes off of Princes St so even the location is great.

El personal es muy lento y desorganizado. Las mesas estaban sucias. Cuando "limpiaba" después de que un cliente se fuera, la mujer usaba un paño viejo y sucio (omg). Servicio muy lento. Mi esposo había elegido esto de un sitio de reserva y, a primera vista, el menú ofrecía mucho. Una crítica mencionó un servicio lento, pero lo atribuimos a cuán concurridos serían los lugares durante el festival de Edimburgo. Sin embargo, quedó claro que solo había una camarera y una persona en la cocina. Los entrantes no tardaron mucho en llegar, pero ninguno de los dos, haggis neeps y tatties y morcilla envuelto en jamón, carecía de sabor. . . fue el budín negro más blanco que he probado en mi vida. Siglos ; luego aparecieron los platos principales. La pechuga de pato estaba exagerada a pesar de ser descrita en el menú como rara y estaba rodeada de broccolli y mini zanahorias cocidas en lugar de las papas fritas prometidas. Mi marido tenía la pierna de cordero y yo tenía el salmón escocés en pasta de tomate seco. Si quieres comida rápida, este no es el lugar para ir. Si aprecias el arduo trabajo que conlleva una comida encantadora, entonces este íntimo restaurante es algo que debes probar.

Mi esposa y yo almorzamos el 20 de agosto de 2019. Teníamos un entrante (sopa de tomate y albahaca y brushetta), principal (pizza y ravioles) y postre (helado y chocolate caliente). Todos fueron excelentes. Hubo una cálida bienvenida y un buen servicio. La espera para los cursos fue bastante aceptable.

Era tardi e cercavamo ristorante vicino all'hotel. E non sono tipo da mangiare nei ristoranti italiani all'estero.

As with the previous Groupon customer. I attempted to book on three separate occasions and each time the excuse was the same . Kitchen closed on that particular day. I have now given up and will treat as a write off. Any future Groupon clients be aware. Steer well clear

Attirées par les avis positifs, nous avons mangé dans ce restaurant qui se trouve à une rue de notre logement. Que dire sans être trop méchante ... nourriture insipide, serveurs à côté de ses pompes, erreur dans la commande, deux fois, trois plats de pâtes à la carte et manque pourtant un des ingrédients principaux ! On aurait du se méfier en voyant le restaurant vide. C’était pas mauvais mais décevant.

I purchased a Groupon voucher in order to give the restaurant a try. When you phone to make a booking, they have a voicemail system . The first time, the answering machine was full so it was not possible to leave a message. On the second occasion, I phoned three times and left two voicemails throughout the day- no-one got back to me. I suspect my mistake was to let them know I had a Groupon Voucher. Really not sure why they do Groupon deals if they don't want to take the bookings. Very disappointing!

Having just arrived in the Capital for a few days with daughter and son in law and wife was a little unwell, we three decided to look up restaurants in walking distance from our apartment in Stockbridge. Found this place on line.

I received a voucher for my birthday and visited for the first time. The food was very good, tasty and excellent quality. We had the taglitelle special, a good size portion and served piping hot. We chose the panna cotta sweet, wow, perfect.

The food was good and with a deal the price was right but it was too busy for only one waiter so the service was slow.

Small Italian/Scottish restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. I would recommend the mussels starter, a generous portion with prawns and garlic bread to mop up the spicy soup. Wine is sold by glass or bottle.

We are here as a party of 7 on a Sunday evening. We had an excellent evening. Everyone enjoyed their food & we all had something different from the menu & we didn’t wait long considering the restaurant was busy when we got there. Last out after closing time but we were not rushed. Good wine. Good homely cooked food. This is our third visit & I hope not our last when we visit Edinburgh again.

Ordered from here off Just Eat. We could have got the same dishes from other Italians for around £15 but we didn't want to risk poor quality as we were starving, so we ordered from this “high quality“ place for £25. The food was late and when it eventually arrived was stone cold. The carbonara was basically plain spaghetti (like seriously hardly any sauce to it) with really fatty bacon (honestly 80% white fat and 20% pink bacon). You can see it in the photo - and that's after I tried to stir it to get some of the sauce from the bottom up. The pizza was a bit mangled as if the box had fallen on its side. We heated the dishes up which really impaired the quality but they were edible since we were so hungry. Wouldn't order again for sure but their restaurant service must be better.

Second time been to this lovely little restaurany and ordered the same dish again as enjoyed so much on the previous visit! The staff are always friendly and attentative and would recommend for groups of friends or for couples also! Definitely the Italian to go to if you are in Edinburgh, after studying here for 4 years I wish I had found it before now!

Good, honest Italian cooking at a very competitive price when booked through 5pm at 40% off. Enjoyed convivial evening with family with good service.

Good deals on their website and on 5pm. Pasta dishes were nice although the steak wasn’t particularly enjoyable. Restaurant at first had a strong smell of paint as we first arrived which gradually turned into a kitchen grease smell. Left the restaurant smelling like a fryer.

We all ordered pizzas which were delicious. The restaurant is comfortable and has a great atmosphere. Attentive staff. Amazing food all freshly made. Fantastic menu choice. The only reason I've not provided 5 stars is there was no ambience or atmosphere to the restaraunt and we dined one Sunday for lunch. Food was fantastic and it's well worth a visit.

One of the best pizzas I have ever had! I ordered the Capo di tutti i capi but asked for the goats cheese to be substituted with mozzarella, and it was divine! I was gifted a Groupon voucher for the meal here, and I had no idea what to expect, but I can happily say I was VERY pleasantly surprised. The service was great too, very helpful & friendly, and the atmosphere was very relaxed. Would highly recommend :-D

We stumbled upon Papavero on our last day in Edinburgh and had a lovely, leisurely meal in an intimate environment. My companion thought this was the best meal we had in a week though this has to be qualified by the fact that we were on a group tour and most of our meals were at hotels. The squid ink liquine with sun dried tomatoes was fantastic, the pizza was okay. Great beverage selection, I had two glasses of Falanghina wine and my companion had scotch. Meal was a fantastic value.

Had a spur of the moment decision to go out for a meal and we were extremely happy with our choice. Had a Groupon voucher that we found out we had to make a reservation for but the waiter was happy to let it slide and allow us to use it.

Un pequeño gran restaurante local con un buen menú expansivo. Nuestro primer plato era fresco y muy sabroso (prosciutto insalata caprese - recomendado!). Para platos principales, buenas pizzas frescas con una gran selección. Mi esposa realmente quería risotto sin embargo quería quitar ciertos ingredientes. Nuestro servidor estaba muy dispuesto a cambiar los ingredientes e incluso sugirió agregar diferentes ingredientes para garantizar que el principal sería su elección. La comida no me decepcionó acompañada de un servicio atento. Buena selección de vinos y cervezas y muy buena relación calidad-precio con ofertas entre semana / almuerzo. Sin duda volveremos!

Si buscas un auténtico restaurante italiano en Edimburgo, este es el lugar. Reservamos Papavero después de encontrarlo en Meerkat Meals para una noche de domingo. El restaurante estaba tranquilo, que parece reflejarse en las otras críticas, pero no dejes que esto te desanime. La comida era excelente. Tuvimos la focaccia e insalata caprese para comenzar que ambos sabían muy fresco. Mi novia estaba muy impresionada por su langosta bauletti por su plato principal, mientras que mi strigoli putanesca fue brillante. Lista de vinos es simple y de precio razonable; El verdichio classico que pedimos era muy bonito. El servicio fue rápido y amistoso. Lamentablemente no estoy en Edimburgo muy a menudo, de lo contrario volvería pronto. Papavero bien merece una visita.

Encontramos un buen groupon, pizza y pasta para 4. Llamé y confirmé que queríamos esto para mí, mi esposa y 3 niños. Más que complaciente y sin problemas con la niña de 2 años (algunos lugares no la dejaron entrar) la comida era encantadora, se trataba bien y los niños incluso comentaban cuánto disfrutaban del lugar.

Hemos estado en Papavero muchas veces y nunca me ha decepcionado. Tuvimos un almuerzo delicioso otra vez hoy. La comida es deliciosa y el servicio es excelente, atento pero no demasiado. El Panna cotta es uno de los mejores que he probado. Tuvimos 3 platos, bebidas y café por unos 30, excelente precio para la ciudad. No puedo esperar para volver.

We found Papavero via a 5pm.com deal and are so glad we did. The mussels were amazing and we our mains were superb - our waiter was amazing - service very attentive in fact I would say this meal was better than those we have eaten in Rome will definitely return on our next visit to Edinburgh

We had such a lovely meal here on Sunday. The food was absolutely amazing and the service was great. It was really authentic Italian at a great price. We'll definitely go back.

Really pleased we found this restaurant set back away from the busier parts of the city. It’s a small restaurant with a nice atmosphere and the food was really good. Good, quick service and all meals reasonably priced. Would definitely return next time we visit the city.

We were walking past and in need of sustenance. Drawn in by the 2 course lunch special, we were thoroughly impressed with the quality of food and the service. Given what some of the local pubs were charging for lunch - this was a gem, a lucky find, but wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Visited with hubby one evening for a quiet, intimate supper. Comfy chairs and table, nice starters, good wine selection, tasty entrees. Nice in evening with twinkle lights and candles on tables. Gets busy but tables are far enough apart to allow for privacy. Highly recommend the spaghetti and calzones. Great service, too.

Yet another great Saturday lunch at papavero. The quality of the food and service is always terrific and tremendous value.

6 covers arrived 45 mins early for booking. No issues, wine brought and we chat chewing the fat until they were ready for us. Fabulous food, great serving at a very reasonable price. Would go back

Pooped in here for a quick meal before the theatre and wasn’t disappointed.My wife had spaghetti bolognase whilst I plumped for a Ragu pizza. Both dishes were fantastic in fact it was probably one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. Owner very friendly and good value for money. I will definitely go again.

The last time I had pizza before visiting Papavero was a takeaway from one of the big pizza chains, which was pretty disappointing. My food at Papavero was a breath of fresh air in comparison, and my pizza with spicy Italian sausage was definitely on par with any good pizza I've ever eaten in any other Italian restaurant. Accompanied by a fresh pint of Italian draught beer and a lovely dessert made me a very happy person! I'd happily recommend this restaurant to anyone.

After visiting the Stockbridge Sunday market, we chanced upon this Italian restaurant. There was a great set lunch on offer. 2 courses lunch with at £8.95, plus coffee ! 3 courses at £9.95 !! Lunch hour from 12 to 3pm.

At £8.95 for two courses at lunchtime, we didn't expect to get a homemade Italian meal. But, that's what we got … and it was delicious. Everything was prepared fresh to order (except the bolognese, which our server told us required three hours to prepare). The best item we sampled was the soup of the day: tomato basil.

What a find! we nearly booked this through a Groupon deal, but really glad we didn't. Sunday lunch menu for £9.95 for three course and each of them excellent. Sea Bass was really fresh, fish and chips too and all other course great.

Fuimos a este restaurante en una gran fiesta para la celebración familiar.

Nos pizza, que era bueno. El personal es amable y rápido servicio. Por desgracia el olor en el restaurante era muy desagradable. El olor a aceite frito era insoportable y me hizo pensar si se vuelve a mi ropa y pelo. Si yo no tenía prisa, no me he alojado allí.

Empezamos con el antipasto vegetariano que estaba delicioso. Nos miraba y tener pan ordedered junto con este. Tuve la vegetariana que también era delicioso tagliatelle - muy bien cocinado. Mi marido tenía el tortellini que bolognaise realmente disfrutamos.
