Made a trip to Clare for the day and stopped off especially on the way to Painters At The Angel Sudbury for breakfast. Rang the previous day to ask questions (to be prepared - if they were dog friendly inside), but unfortunately it wasn't mentioned on the telephone that it was advisable to book and reserve a table in advance! So disappointingly, when we had travelled over 1hr 15mins for breakfast, the only space available was eating outside in the courtyard. Luckily the weather was nice, otherwise, we would have had to rethink our plans. We were told that there was a long wait for breakfast, but the outside manicured surroundings and weather was lovely, so it wasn't an issue. The outside courtyard had a few tables on the concreted area and plenty of picnic benches in the grassed area. When ordered, we asked for our hot drinks to arrive with our breakfast - that was noted, which we appreciated :) Breakfast arrived (we ordered one extra side each) - black pudding and halloumi - this was plentiful and delicious). Breakfast was worth the wait, presented nicely and appetising (apart from the sausages). They looked strivelled up (not the usual looking Cumberland sausages) I've had/seen before, but we ate them anyway. Breakfast was more on the expensive side (compared to what we're used to), so this was a one off treat for us. (Breakfast £14.50 plus the extras at different prices) - so mine with halloumi was £18! The menu was clean, laminated and had a lovely choice of items (both sides). However, I think "Full English Breakfast" could have been more detailed, i.e. was this two of everything? If so, would be nice to have a smaller breakfast option (one of everything) for smaller eaters. The coffees that arrived with breakfast were lovely - flat white was the best we've ever had, and a 1/2 shot latte (the shot was given on the side) was a nice thoughtful touch! The staff were friendly, attentive and welcoming. Definitely a lovely experience and start to our day. Please note: The address displayed in Trip Advisor is incorrect and hasn't been updated. Had I not rung up beforehand, we would have gone to their "old" place at 11 Gainsborough Street instead of their new location (43 Friars Street).

A victim of its success. 3 of the past 3 times I've visited have been disappointing. Last time we booked and were given a tiny table despite the cafe not being fully booked. We indicated that we'd like a bigger table, to no avail. Prices are very high for very basic options... for instance, what is basically a side salad is nearly £5 and then toppings are an extra several £s and there isn't even a salad dressing or anything special about it. The last time we visited I chose a tuna sandwich, which was delivered with a long blonde hair on it. I didnt want to embarrass the waitress so just picked it off. However, when the owner took out payment I thought I'd just mention it quietly but no opportunity was given with a 'how was your meal?' or such like... just a comment about how to leave a tip on the card reader. Such a shame as I used to love Painters.

2 of us popped in for a cuppa and brunch. ordered 2 pots of tea, 1 scramble egg and salmon, 1 scramble egg and avocado. Welcome was cool although seemed annoyed we had no reservation but there were tables available. Service was ok, place was noisy and busy (assumed this was a good sign) . tea served in pots with china cups and saucers, nice touch food took a while, and was disappointing, 2 slices of cheap sliced bread toasted, spoon full of scramble which was over cooked and browned. my friend had small amount of avocado and my salmon was slimy and i think cheap. We are not big eaters so didnt mind small portion, hence we didnt order full breakfasts. i would not have written a poor review, however, the Final bill £28.30?! When i checked the bill i had been charged for 2 x £4.15 avocado on toast, and 2 x £1.20 egg, 1 x smoked salmon £5.50, 1 x scramble egg £6.90 I queried this which was dealt with loudly and embarrassingly. Basically they would not accept their mistake but when the waitress asked 'would you like 2 slices or 1)? This doubles the price of your whole dish! Beware! I suggested people should be warned when ordering that your dish price will go from £4.15 to £8.30 for the extra slice! clearly a mistake but was told this is due to the cost of living going up, by an impolite antipodean lady. Since when did 1 slice of toast cost £4.15! I am really cross with myself that i paid the bill as it was with hindsight, and definitely would not return here when Sudbury has so many lovely cafe's for brunch, we eat out a lot and happy to pay the going rate but this was ridiculous pricing. I would hope the proprietor will review this and the receipt attached in photos and at least admit a mistake was made

Absolutely fantastic experience with Painters at the Angel where Tracey, Alan and the whole crew managed to help us have the most perfect wedding! From the beginning, Tracy was incredibly helpful and supported us in putting together a fantastic day. We started with a delicious brunch with our guests which included a selection of bacon and sausage sandwiches followed by some mini quiches. When the rest of our party came, we had drinks on arrival where the team were very attentive and caring towards our guests. Finally, the most talked about aspect of our wedding, the grazing table! I cannot explain how beautiful and mouth watering this table looked. The food was fresh, locally sourced and very, very tasty! Tracy, Alan and the whole team went above and beyond with us, often checking in on us to make sure as the bride and groom we had a chance to sit down, have a drink and something to eat. Not only were the team very caring of us, but also of our guest. Painters at the Angel holds a special place in our hearts and we are so grateful for all the work everyone put in to make our day so special.

Love love love Painters, and the new location is better I would say too! I am very picky about Eggs Benedict to the point I am reluctant to order it when out. However, I have had it four times from Painters now and every single time the poached eggs have been perfect. I work in London and sometimes go out to independent places there for breakfast and I would say they are still not a patch on Painters. We haven’t yet had an event at Painters but are planning to, the grazing tables always look amazing too!

We were warmly received, the attention was immediate, the breakfast menu was very adequate, the food was freshly prepared and our breakfasts were delicious. A group of friends had lunch here. I had heard great things, if I’m honest, it was ok. Nothing bad to say but not somewhere I’d rush back to. The inside is lovely and the staff are helpful and courteous. The food is good, lovely ham served in the ploughman’s lunch but I was disappointed to be served a , albeit thick, slice of bread rather than a lovely crusty French stick or crispy bread. The plates are small and the selections at the top of their prices I would say. The fresh fruit salad and ice cream was nice with a variety of fruit. The English breakfast tea did not taste of much, though does come in a lovely large tea pot rather than a mug We had a nice time and I wouldn’t suggest you don’t give it a try

I had a bacon, brie and cranberry sandwich, which was incredible value for money with several rashers of bacon and plenty of brie. We have just eaten or rather not eaten all of our lunch at this cafe for the first time. It had a really good choice for vegetarians and very flexible. Very friendly staff and nice garden. My husband ordered a vegetarian eggs benedict which was delicious until he tasted fish and found a tiny piece of fish in his meal. Unfortunately he has a fish allergy and this made him feel rather ill. We also had to wait rather a long time and chase up our food so perhaps they had forgotten us and as a result rushed our food at the last minute. Staff were apologetic and we didn’t have to pay, but there was obviously some cross contamination in the kitchen. So for allergy sufferers, vegans and vegetarians-do beware.

The food was lovely and I am REALLY fussy and hard to please. They got my eggs exactly right which is rare (runny yoke but cooked white) you'd be amazed how many people can't get it?

My wife and I popped in yesterday for some brunch. I've had the full English breakfast a few times now and it's never disappointed! Best breakfast in Sudbury without a doubt. You can tell the food is quality and the staff are very friendly.

This café provides reasonably priced good food in an historic building with a charming garden just off the market place in Sudbury. It is very handy for visitors to Gainsborough's birthplace which is full of paintings by Gainsborough, Constable, and others.

Quick and friendly, Painters is one of our favourite cafes in Sudbury. Delicous food in a quiet and adorable setting. Eat in the garden if you can for extra quaint-ness! Highly recommended.

Came across Painters when exploring streets of Sudbury. Friendly and welcoming staff. Sat in the courtyard as the morning was warm and sunny; very pleasant and relaxing. My full English breakfast was lovely and the tea refreshing. Definitely looking forward to a return visit.

Had breakfast on Saturday morning here. Really well cooked food served by friendly owner and staff. Tea was superb. No teabags here. Loose tea in a pot with China cups. I had the eggs benedict and my wife had the fry up. Really good. Highly recommended.

Popped into Painters today with my Partner for breakfast, It really is the place for a super meal. The best bacon sausages and fresh eggs served on lovely hot plates with toast on the side. We enjoyed every mouthful and would highly recommend the Painters Breakfasts.

Having lived in Sudbury for the whole of my life, finding this little gem was great! I love the atmosphere and the panini's are of really great quality. Really good for lunch and the prices are fantastic for what you're given.

As a pool player for this pub I'm in here most days. What makes this pub the place to be is the character, the charm, the staff who make it such a cosy place to frequent. The food is amazing, my favourite by far is the roast dinners. Massive fan of then. The staff too are friendly and accommodating, even playing pool they come over and talk to you ask you about your day ect, their general attitude is very positive and it makes the experience that much better. I can't imagine going anywhere else. Keep up the great work!

Michael and Sheila have gone although the new "lady of the house" is actually Sheilas daughter. I appreciated we are in troubled times with a lot of pubs cutting back but a very limited menu will not impress previous customers, although the fish couldn't have been fresher. A big no is the owners children having the run of the pub, just imagine "grumpy" Michaels comments!!!.
