The GWR 1st Class Lounge at Paddington Station comprises of several rooms. As you enter the lounge you are met by an uninspiring plain room with seating that is basic, worn, and unfortunately grubby - More akin to an NHS waiting room. If you walk to the end of the entrance corridor and turn left, you will find the older atmospheric part of the lounge, full of period leather armchairs. I highly recommend that you make the effort to find the historic part of the lounge. As has been mentioned in other reviews, the food and snacks available in this lounge are basic. Tea, coffee, juice and non-alcoholic beverages. Biscuits, crisps, and fruit. It's not anything like an airline business class lounge. So don't expect much and you won't be disappointed. What the GWR 1st Class Lounge does have to offer is some peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the Station Concourse. This is a plus for any traveller at peak times.

As with other reviews I would not bother. Really gone down hill. No sandwiches just some fruit and biscuits diet coke or lemonade or water?! No decaff options so couldn't even have a coffee? wife had one and was awful. When u pay £300 more than standard fare you expect much more. No table service just a room with dirty seats no fast wifi just station general wifi!? hot as temporary air con units put in place not very good, Awful will not bother again. Years ago at least there were sandwiches and other food and cleaner!??! Next time will fly rather than use this service. Do not bother also now find out there are no sandwiches or real food included on the train either!??

Spotlessly clean, welcoming staff, a haven of peace just as the station was gearing up for rush hour on a very hot day. Good range of cold drinks as well as teas and coffee. A range of light snacks to suit all tastes. Lovely fresh fruit was available too. A welcome pause between trains. We shall certainly visit again. Many thanks to all the conscientious members of staff who were quietly cleaning and tidying around and always available to answer queries.

You have to assume that, much like the on train first class refreshment service, GWR has made a conscious decision to offer a low level basic service. In that respect it is achieving what it set out to ! Location on platform one with little signage. Fairly small, we sat at chairs looking out on the platform with power sockets. The fabric covering was worn through on the arms to expose the wooden frame. Low level offering; biscuits, fruit, cold cans and tea / coffee machine. Two packs of gluten free cheese and onion sandwiches also on offer. Have to wonder what another operator would offer if they took over the franchise. It would have to be an improvement !

Since I only paid an extra £15 to upgrade my ticket (GWR sale) I may be coming at this from a different perspective but I thought this a very nice lounge. I had an excellent greeting from a gentlemen at the door who checked my ticket and as I left he was keen to make sure I knew which platform my train departed from. The lady looking after the lounge was EXCELLENT, extremely friendly and in and out of the back room every few minutes to check for new customers. The cold drinks and hot drinks machine you can help yourself to, as well as fruit and biscuits, please see photos. There are always salted or dry roast peanuts and ready salted crisps which will be offered to customers by the attendant as well as a little pot of hummus and tortilla chips at lunch or porridge at breakfast, see menu photo. The toilets are spotless and there are showers and a hairdryer. There is a section for those who wish to work, an area which is well lit which is where the food and drinks are but for those customers complaining about it looking like easyjet then you should have walked to the other section of the lounge which is all comfy seating, dimmer lighting and old style vibe. The temperature was a comfortable warmth for February. I would definitely upgrade again.

We agree with all those who have observed this once excellent and legendary GWR provision has declined into a cutback and unwelcoming service. This is no longer value for money as a first class experience. The catering options are now miserable, the staff reluctant to engage (except when checking your ticket and allowed time there), magazines to browse and free newspapers have gone (as has TV in the entry area), the carpets are a faded echo of GWR's better days and on our weekday early evening visit there was hardly anyone else there to use their well worn furniture. Absolutely miserable compared to how much we loved our visits pre 2019. Would GWR like to comment on any improvements that may be planned?

What have you done GWR ?. This one time respite with its wine, crips, cake, fruit etc available to FC passengers has been much reduced. Apparently if you sit down a "host" will come and take your order. Hmm, best tell that to the "hosts" and no-one came to me for 30 mins. I had to go and knock on a door. The evening food offering is crisps or nuts. Just as FC in the trains went from wonderful, deep leather seats to easyJet style, rockhard seats, I'm afraid the lounge has been similarly downgraded. Toilets are good though !

Travelled up on the sleeper from Cornwall, and wanted to have a shower, and get dressed for a formal lunch. Told that we could each only use the shower for 15 minutes (fine for a male, useless for a female). Showers were clean, although a bath mat outside the shower would have been good. Friendly staff, but lack of hanging facilities in all of the lounge. Coffee from machine was acceptable; in this day and age, their wifi is awful.

This lounge on Platform 1 operated by Great Western Railway deserves plaudits for allowing first class Eurailpass holders access, unlike in Italy TrenItalia. It has alimited range of snacks and drinks: I didn't see any alcohol. I understand the ‘new’ first class lounge on platform 1 was cobbled together during Covid to vacate a larger lounge space for workers to get ready, distanced, for their shifts. That’s what I was told by a member of staff 2 years ago. However this poor excuse for a first class lounge continues to run. Although clean, expect student style seating and not much space. GWR really needs to rethink this space since there’s no hint of luxury or serenity that you expect with first class travel.

On first impression the lounge appears reasonably decorated and laid out, it is more a Costa coffee style establishment. The front door host gave a warm welcome upon entry. There are two hot drink machines offering various beverages. A single option on crisps (Salt & Vinegar) four choices of biscuits and cold bottled water. The lounge is a slightly better option than other establishments on the concourse and I would class it adequate. Do not expect Airport lounge standards. Based purely on my experience and observation as I waited for the 11.58 to King's Cross on 21st November 2022, was the sheer number of long red winter coat and beanie hat members of staff, entering the lounge, helping themselves to the victuals on offer and then congregating around the galley area having a laugh and banter. As things became more boisterous between them the noise levels rose significantly. Quite possibly the hard surfaces added to noise reverberating around the space however, it wasn't pleasant experience everytime an external member of staff entered and interacted with the hosts.

Booked first class return from London to Par in Cornwall. First Class a waste of money really. Additional seat space was the only benefit, although the service was quite busy. Food offer was a disappointment - just snacks/crisps and tasteless coffee. Once they've been around once there's only so many packets of nuts you can eat. On the return, I asked for a gin and tonic - took an hour to arrive, no ice or lemon. Just warm gin and warm tonic. Felt like I was asking for a rare prize. Staff were friendly other than one ticket inspector who agressively asked for my ticket even though I had shown it to her at the beginning of the trip.

It’s ok, and a nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the station, but it’s not my idea of 1st class. There were two coffee machines. One was out of order. The choice was good though - coffee, tea, hot choc, mocha etc. Bottles of water were provided, and cans of coke, but only regular coke - not diet. There were also jugs of juice. No alcohol was provided. Snacks were little packs of cake and biscuits, and pain au chocolat. A very small selection. No sandwiches. It has its own toilets, so you don’t need to leave the area to visit the bathroom. Free wifi available, but that’s available throughout the station anyway. There was a socket by my seat to charge my phone. I was a little disappointed with it to be honest, but at least it was a comfortable area to sit, with tables, while you waited for your train. A quieter area away from the crowd.

I totally appreciate train travel is different in times of covid but had a TERRIBLE experience travelling on GNR first class from London Paddington to Cornwall for a long weekend. Having paid over £185 for a return ticket I was shocked how poor first class catering was. The website features pictures of a trolley offering fruit, fizzy water etc yet NO fruit, sandwiches, muffins, pastries, fizzy water etc or alcohol offered gratis. I travel regularly and have to say GNR has been the worst 1st class experience post Covid and definitely wasn’t worth the £185 ticket cost. Dirty head rests that need changing. No hand sanitisers provided on the train. Filthy bathroom with water filled slippy floor from the toilet and the tap didn’t work! The room itself is need of a touch of paint and a general clean. The toilet is not marked out from the main entrance so you have to ask the first class host in order to find it. We went to see a matinee show and I knew we would have some time before our return train so had looked up reviews of the first class lounge so that we would know what to expect. Having seen replies to criticism about non-functioning coffee machines dating back to December and January I assumed that these would have been replaced by 21 February. After all, the replies said that new machines were “on the way”. Well if they are new machines they have broken down already. Instant coffee only in both sections of the first class loung and very uninspiring snacks. White grapes and sad looking apples were the fruit option. Ultimately the lounge is a more comfortable place to wait than the concourse but does not feel like a first class experience. As for when they will have functioning coffee machines? I wouldn’t hold your breath!

We always come here after a mini break in London, this time we were very disappointed. Got here Sunday morning had to sit in the harder plastic chairs on the left side of the building as the comfortable right hand side with the sofas was closed. The only food available was rock hard croissants or biscuits. The hot and cold drinks selection were good, that’s the only good thing I can say about the whole experience. No newspapers! No charging points. Hardly any food! The train home had no sandwich’s or hot drinks at all! Soft drinks , crisps (only allowed plain) what’s the point in paying this extra for hardly any service? I think next time I’ll go to a coffee shop or restaurant with the money I save and have a nice meal!

A quiet sit down, with newspapers, WiFi, crisps, nuts, drinks and cake. Clean, friendly staff, quiet. Left an item last week, popped back in after the weekend and got my property back. Very happy.

He estado aquí varias veces y siempre lo he recomendado a mis colegas.

Looking forward to using this lounge before boarding the night train to Penzance. Found this lounge very poorly set up for passengers like me. Staff poor, facilities poor and quite honestly they could rename it a waiting room rather than a first class lounge in my opinion.

Have used the lounge many times over the years. It is useful for resting, working, snacking and drawing breath waiting for or recovering before or after a journey. The toilet facilities have been upgraded, I think there may even be a shower. The older style rooms are still peaceful and comfortable but late afternoon yesterday the main room seemed less well provisioned and set up. Over the years the big wall tv was usually silently on the bbc news channel with rolling subtitles but this time it was some ghastly daytime antique/auction/upcycling show with no sound or ST. At least the departure screen was live. The long bench inside the window makes a good spot for recharges and work. The hot and cold drinks were well stocked but so far as I remember the only food was prepacked biscuits cake, crisps and a bowl of grapes and another of apples. Maybe they still have croissants etc in the mornings, occasional dinky sandwiches etc at other times. But it did feel a bit flat. Just a little adjustment and attention to provision and the TV would have made a disproportionate difference.

ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE at point of entry. We were ‘greeted’ with - “we are short of staff so there’s no bar on the train and a limited breakfast”, whilst said operative was on her mobile phone. We were then barked at to close the lounge door. I was utterly surprised that at a ‘first class’ lounge how badly we were treated. We were ushered (whilst the lady at reception was still on her mobile) through to an area with little seating and when I tried to pull some chairs together for our group I got shouted at and told I wasn’t allowed to do that. The GWR website promotes the first class lounge on their website as a comfortable area with leather chesterfield sofas and this was definitely not where we were sent. It was only after I pointed this out that we were then ushered through a roped off arch to the area advertised on the website. The lady who greeted us then continued to have an argument with the manager (that I had asked to speak to) in the corridor, incredibly unprofessional in my opinion. I was totally disappointed with the customer service here and even phoned GWR customer service to complain whilst in the waiting room.

Stuck down platform 1, it’s a bit of a schlepp and not really worth the bother for a free packet of second rate crisps. I usually leave from 6-7 platforms away and don’t fancy the 5 minute dash through the milling throng (even worse if there’s another train unloading on platform 1 as you go out) I’d rather stay out in one of the coffee shops and only have a quick stroll across the concourse, to be honest. It needs to be in the shops area or next to the ticket office with direct access to the main concourse (not half way down an out of the way platform)

I visited the lounge during the weekend and the snack selection was comprehensive unlike other London train lounges which offer a limited selection during the weekend. They offer croissants, pain au raisin / chocolat during the AM which gave me a good start to the day. The bathroom / facilities looked recently refurbished and the lounge is tidy and very well presented. Staff were friendly / attentive. Some suggestions - it would be good to have newspapers during the weekend, nearby WiFi from onboard train seemed to disrupt the web session, would be good if bananas were offered otherwise definitely 1st class in my opinion.

This is my third visit to the lounge.....which provides within the hustle and bustle and sheer noise of the station a quiet and calm space to wait for your train.Nonetheless it seems that the standard of food and snacks provided has diminished since my first trip.No sandwiches ...no fruit just crisps a cake and nuts.Howevaer the toilet facilities have been upgraded and much improved ....new clean and fresh. The staff were attentive at clearing up mess but I would expect more food choices here.

Gran¡hurra!

I visited recently before travelling, especially after previous comments about the refurbishment. Well, it was awful - very cramped, not a patch on the place before refurbishment - not much in the way of refreshments other than coffee/tea/water/fruit juice, etc; Staff were not very friendly - considering we pay essentially the same price for first class regardless of route or train operator, they should be on a par with the likes of the Virgin Lounge at Euston - even the service on the trains could be better as well.
