O'shio in Brighton and Hove

Visited here twice in three days . We booked both times as the place is very busy. Had sushi mostly but also tried the seafood omelette which was delicious. Not cheap but the quality of the sushi was excellent. Friendly staff and clientele of mixed ages so nice atmosphere. We will definitely return.

Restaurant is so popular is hard to get a table, so partner and I got take out instead. Really delicious high quality food, would recommend. Inside atmosphere looked great so was a shame there was no tables left but very happy with the takeout.

Had tasty mix of the Japanese and Korean menus. Would recommend - it was a little less spicy than we expected (but still very good). Order came out in no particular order - was a bit odd to end with sashimi but my kids gave it a good go nevertheless. Would advise booking - we walked in and got the last unreserved table, but others turned away.

Some excellent food, though the sushi is average and over-priced. Friendly staff, but the supercilious floor manager was very passive-aggressive about getting us out at the end of the meal, even though we had been there for less than an hour.

Yummy food and excellent service. Wonderful flavours. We had different varieties of jjigae and all were yum. Hope I get the chance to go back again. Absolutely loved.

Fabulous food. authentic, fresh and well prepared. Quick service. Was here for dinner I come often (always fab) and friend was well impressed. Great flavours. Would recommend you book a table so not to get disappointed in the evening can be heaving from 5pm. Must be good as well frequented by the Asian community.

We had a lovely mother's day lunch, fabulous food and service. The restaurant was full, service quick and the staff really friendly. The food was the star, absolutely delicious and very very reasonable.

It was Saturday night, my wife and me had a booking for 8pm and were looking forwards to this meal - had a babybsitter organised and had a drink in another place. Walked in to this restaurant at 6 minutes past 8 and waiter looked at me, laughed and said he gave our table away! I've never experienced this before anywhere. We were shocked and confused. Don't even know what to say! Would never go back there as it was extremely rude! I don't think it's ok to give table away because someone is 6 min late and laugh at their face!

This is a charming restaurant, slightly studenty, lots of Japanese/Korean people which is usually a good sign, quite buzzy and busy, need to book at peak times. Highlights were the service which was quick even when busy, friendly, polite and delightful. The food was tasty - good range of different types of dishes. My only complaint would be that as vegetarians, we had nearly all the veggie options available in our first visit so the incentive to return is as limited as the choice. More veggie options please ! It's Brighton ! And it's East Asian food !

If you're looking just for a rating of the food, I'd happily say that the food itself at Oshios has been outstanding everytime bar one visit during the 'Eat Out' compaign in 2020 where it felt like things had been....ahem, diluted to last longer with the broth -- if I could rate Oshio's on their food alone they'd be among the best in Brighton, usually. This time was no exception with all of our group remarking on just how delicious each dish was from start to finish and it was great to see that our visit in 2020 had been an exception to their usual standard. Genuine relief: that's how good the food can be. 'Itadakimasu', indeed. However, and this is a rather large 'however'; running a restaurant is only partly cheffing, and part service and experience and I have to suspect this fact is getting lost a bit in the glow of the strength of the food. At around 12:55 I called to ask if there would be a table available any time for lunch for a group of 5 of us in the afternoon and a friendly lady quickly mentioned that, 'yes', there was a table at 2:30, which we cheerily accepted. Now imagine this: our group walks up to the restaurant, and the chef himself gets up from the table, seeming upon seeing us coming, and swung the door sign to 'closed' literally in our faces. The briskness and nonchalence with which it was done, well, it might as well have been a door, or a pipebomb for all the impact it had on our sense of being welcome. A quiet awkward chat amoungst ourselves later and we very gingerly let ourselves through the obstacle of the 'stop sign' our host had left for us, feeling like we had to explain ourselves into the restaurant to which we had just made a booking -- at *their* chosen time. We're not really in the realms of 5 star service here are we? Not really in the right sector of the right galaxy, infact. At any rate, we were seated (next to the toilets in the corner, which seems to be the 'seats of shame' reading back a few more reviews) and the kindly waitress very generously informed us we had 10 whole human minutes to order our food with. To say that we felt rushed, well, it felt like they were attempting to set a best lap time for customers on seats and out the door, and I'm pretty sure the gawping expressions on our group's faces probably communicated that. At any rate, our waitress earnestly decided that our ration of 10 minutes of decision-making time was far too indulgent and came to collect our orders after 2 minutes of sitting down. A few members of our group mentioned that they had really been looking forward to trying some new food and had panic-ordered comfort choices as the sense of urgency was the main and only source of energy from the team. If that wasn't bad enough, the waitresses started clearing the table with people still eating. Guys, to the team at Oshio: you can't treat people like this. If *you* accept a booking, then you have agreed to the implicit social contract of not pushing your guests through the system like a laundrette. If there was no time, the answer should have been 'no', not the farcical excuse for hospitality we recieved -- from a Japanese/Korean restaurant of all places, countries famous for their hospitality. For the food alone, it's clear this is a 4/5 star eating experience potentially, and should be, if it wasn't let down by the size of the place and the sense of feeling very unimportant as a guest. Come on Oshio's, don't let yourselves down like this, you can do better! Ganbare!

Went there for a birthday dinner with my daughter as we have not been to this restaurant.First, we were seated near to the staff/toilet area because we didn't have a booking, tge guy wasn't friendly. Accepted it as I really want to try their food.Daughter enjoyed her bibimbap meal. Mine was ramen, soup base taste nice but the ramen noodle appeared to be uncooked, the soup wasn't hot enough to cook it. Quite expensive for a mediocre menu. However, the worse is yet to come. Immediately, went on our way home, then I started to have tummy ache which lead to a not nice tummy ache that kept me awake until 2am.My daughter earlier requested to the other well known ramen house, but I suggested this one. I regretted it. One good thing about it though, the female staff are very friendly and were attentive.

Went out with my wife for a dinner for the first time after 2 years and we were not disappointed. The presentation of each dish was magnificent reaching perfection , and were delicious to an orgasmic level. Highly recommended, and I have to say it is the best Sushi in Brighton.

One of the best meals out we've had in a long time. Not one dish disappointed.The Sushi and Sashimi were first class. The Korean spicy fried chicken, stews and spicy pork dishes we had were just amazing.Oh and order the daikon salad. Not the 1st thing you might think of, but absolutely brilliant.The service was super friendly, very quick and just spot on.Oh and the price was very fair for what we had. Perfect. We are looking forward to going back.

What an amazing place, buzzy atmosphere and amazing food. We sat watching the chef prepare the Sushi dishes which is always our favorite place to sit. The staff were accommodating, friendly, attentive and they were so busy too. I cannot wait to return and have already got a list of friends that want to come with us, not bad as we were only there 3 hours ago.

A busy restaurant - one busy Friday evening looking to find a table for myself, partner and a friend - everywhere was fully booked or had a long queue. The waitress manoeuvred tables and managed to squeeze us in without hesitation. My partner and friend had not been here before, my friend was well travelled in Asia and both found the whole experience to be really great with good food, brilliant service; and at a reasonable price.I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

In COVID times and currently only outside dining with there are only six tables available at this unpretentious location.Food was amazing and the service was both polite and efficient.Tables at the top end around the corner are better located as the people passing are not completely in your meal!

I can't say anything bad against them, everything is so perfectly cooked, and fresh.The avocado and the salmon were absolutely insane, I can't remember a better experience than there.It's quite expansive but you know why you pay that much, for fresh food and fresh fish. There is a lot of dishes but they can manage everything perfectly.I've tried some gyoza, with sauce, and it was divine. I could maybe ask to cook gyozas a bit more to make them crunchy and not soft, but it was yummy as hell! I've never been in the restaurant but only by deliveries, but I will for sure go with friends once or twice inside!

Been here several times now and overall, I’m happy with the food. But the rice is nearly always overcooked and with my wife being Chinese really doesn’t like overcooked rice as don’t I.

First visit and was impressed with the quality of food. Service was good. The restaurant gets busy so would advise pre booking. I would recommend the soft crab and beef bulgogi. They do a kids menu, which was a bonus as not many Japanese places we’ve been to lately have this option.

I discovered this little gem a few weeks ago and I’ve been there every weekend since then. The food is delicious and I highly recommend you try their beef bulgogi and the wings! For desert, their assorted mochi ice cream is the best!

We ate at O'shio two weeks ago to celebrate a Birthday. It was our first time there and boy oh boy were we pleased! After having booked just a couple hours in advance we were warmly welcomed to our seats straight away. Our waiter was attentive and helpful in answering our questions and giving suggestions for our order. Kudos for the awesome service! From the extensive selection of Japanese and Korean dishes, we chose sake, piping hot kimchi and bibimbap, fresh sushi and handrolls with edamame and miso soup on the side. To finish off; frozen mochi. Highly recommended, we will be back to try more!

My partner and I went for ‘date night’ on a Tuesday evening. The food was exemplary. Casual dining, but extremely tasty. We had the tempura prawns followed by a range of sashimi and sushi. Everything was delicious. The staff were courteous and knowledgeable. Would definitely go again.

What a great dinner out! I went with my partner on a Friday evening (after making a reservation) and were promptly served. I love seeing pictures of the food on the menu as I’m a bit uncultured on Korean food. We ordered lots of little bits and starters. The food was amazing and served quickly. I recommend the Gyoza, Fried Octopus, the Sushi, and if you’re a spice lover then try the Tteokbokki (pictured) !! The staff were friendly and quick. I accidentally knocked over my drink and smashed a plate in doing so and they replaced my drink free of charge which I thought was incredibly generous and weren’t annoyed at all at me. Overall, the experience was great. It wasn’t too pricey, about £20 per person including drinks. Such tasty food, good service, and will be definitely coming back.

It was a bad memory for Brighton trip although food is OK. We ordered 6 dishes but the waiter missed 3！We waited for over 30mins for the Japanese Hot Pot and found that 3 dishes missed. After we told the manager，the waiter showed a bad face to us！Unbelievable！

We have eaten at O'shio many many times but only just got round to using Tripadvisor. I must highly recommend this little restaurant. The food is exceptionally great. Always fresh and prepared to perfection. The service is prompt and delightful. easily in my top 3 favourite restaurants locally.

This little restaurant near the station is fabulous and we shall return again and again. We've visited South Korea and loved the country, the people and the food. This was authentic Korean food supplied in huge portions and with excellent service. It also serves Japanese dishes which we can't wait to try. We love it.

Came here last night for the first time. I love Japanese food and sushi and Brighton is really lacking decent places for it. Best sushi in Brighton no doubt and all the mains and other sharing plates were so good. Portions brilliant too!! There were 6 of us and we were running late and they were happy to push the table back. All of the staff were great and considering we were quite loud and ordering a lot the service was still really friendly and attentive. Wil definstly be back very soon!

If I could give Oshio's 6 stars I would! The food here is authentic and delicious every single time we come. The staff is wonderful and the food just makes you happy! If anyone likes sashimi, their otoro is melt-in-your-mouth to die for. We also really recommend the bulgolgi, one of our favorite go-to dishes.

We sat at the bar and both had Korean Hotpots. The Seafood hotpot was excellent although the vegan option although good did not have the same depth of flavour. The place was full Saturday lunchtime. Service was efficient and the bar gives you a great view of the chef preparing various dishes. All in in all a very good meal.

We came here with our family on Saturday night. We booked, and we had our table on time. Welcoming and nice staff. The food is excellent, and we highly recommend it. Every dish is prepared with fresh ingredients and the taste is delicious.

After having had excellent experiences previously, we were very disappointed today - not only the attitude of the waiter but the lack of any care for us as clients. We booked a table for 4 people and then changed it to 5 on arrival - this met such gasps of horror and sighs of extreme annoyance we were already feeling unwelcome and then our wheat free request was denied by the chef/owner we decided to pay for our drinks and leave. The staff were unhelpful rude and should seek alternative employment as talking or dealing with the public shouldn't be an option. We tried suggesting the wheat-free alternatives - rice instead of noodles or rice noodles and we were told no this isn't possible. Surely adding rice noodles or just plain rice to a bowl of soup isnt difficult ??? I cannot stand the thought of giving my hard earnt money to miserable unhelpful people. We will never go here again - I suggest you do the same !!

We visited over the Easter weekend, and were glad we had booked a table as the restaurant was busy. The food was delicious and well presented, there was a lot of different dishes to choose from. As it was busy the staff did forget some of our requests for drinks etc.

This place is AMAZING. Super cosy and warm atmosphere, friendly and knowledgable staff, and the food is unreal: tasty, fresh, generous and varied. A little on the pricy side, but all worth it if you ask me. Will definitely return. Tasty sake too.

had previously discovered O'Shio's culinary magic ; Wanted to share with unexpected family arriving from abroad- being Friday night in Festival season , felt there would be no chance. helpful , attentive staff, dragged us in from the rain & revealed an Aladdin's cave of wonders.

I love Japanese and Korean food and this was a fantastic find. The Korean fried chicken was crunchy and flavoursome; the soft shell crab roll was devoured within minutes; the miso soup was tasty and the beef bibimbap absolutely hit the spot. I'd highly recommend this place and would definitely visit again next time I'm back in Brighton.

The menu at Oshio ranged from bento boxes to sushi to soups with noodles and much more. The pork bone broth with noodles was exceptional and bento box great. The gyosa were really food. I would definitely recommend eating at this restaurant.

...because it’ll be even harder to get in BUT we must give praise where praise is due and this spot never disappoints. My husband and I travel to New York a lot and love eating in Koreatown there. O’shio is just as good as our favourite spot in Koreatown, NY. The food is fresh, delicious and the menu contains a wonderful variety of food options. Our favourites are the Galbitang (Korean beef short rib stew) piping hot, the beef is so tender and soup flavourful. Served with a bowl of rice, we could just have that and be completely satisfied but we’re greedy and love their seafood pancake (a must) as well as the chef’s special sushi roll. Honestly it’s all good! They also serve Korean fried chicken. We haven’t ventured out to that yet but it looks delicious. They also serve great bento boxes! For the quality and service (staff are lovely) it is priced very fairly. They also have a great little children’s menu.

As soon as you arrive you feel like you are not in the UK anymore. It transports you to a cozy Asian restaurant atmosphere. The attention was great as well as the food. The presentation of the food and the Korean detail of the cooker in the middle of the table made it all. Congratulations! NICE FOOD & GREAT SERVICE! We will come back for sure!

After reserving a table, me and the fiancé decided to select this restaurant for its authentic look and recommendations. From the start the staff were quick to get us seated and greeted us with a sincere smile, we had two starters; a selection of fresh, taste bud tangling sushi and finger licking good sweet and sour, pepper and salt chicken wings & legs. Then chilli chicken and beef with rice which was a generous potion for a main and to finish off a delicious desert with too many flavours to mention. Gentlemen if you want to impress your ladies, take them here!

A really authentic Japanese and Korean experience

Seeking out a Japanese restaurant a cut above the other day for a special celebration we stumbled upon O’shio. Very definitely a huge success. An excellent range of authentic food of the highest quality. There are cheaper places in Brighton but none can match this for the overall experience. We will be back

Some of the dishes seem overpriced. Six pounds for one piece of sushi is hard to fathom.

Порции большие, персонал вежливый, цены средние, еда острая, иногда даже очень острая, так что если вы не любите поострее, лучше уточнить это у официантов :) По уровню ресторан напомнил Sushi Garden.

We’ve been here a few times and it’s always been really good. The selection is wonderful and so different than you’ll find at any other restaurant. The starters were great - gyoza, kimchi, seafood pancakes. Our mains were also excellent. Chicken katsu curry and rice, beef hot pot, bbq eel bento. The only slight issue was the beef bibimbap. The ingredients were excellent, served in a stone bowl. I had read several reviews about the excellent bibimbap that described the crispy rice formed against the hot stone bowl. I was looking forward to exactly that when I ordered it. Unfortunately, the bowl wasn’t hot enough to do the trick, so the point of this dish was lost. I asked the waiter to see if they could help. He took it back to the kitchen and brought it back to the table 10 minutes later - the bowl was sizzling hot and the rice was as crispy as I’d hoped. It would have been great if they’d served it like that in the first place.

This was our second visit to Oshio. The first visit was pretty bad – great lumps of meat in the vegetarian stew, over an hour waiting time for food, bland over-priced dishes – but as at the time the restaurant was fairly new, we allowed the benefit of the doubt. However, with the fantastic E-Kagen just across the street we had no reason to risk re-trying Oshio. And if E-Kagen hadn’t recently mysteriously closed (much to our and many Brighton local’s acute dismay), we would have never gone back to Oshio. And we wished we hadn’t.

O'shio is a small restaurant with 10/15 tables and thanks to that there is an impressive attention to every detail. Food is amazing, never tried a rice with curry so good and sashimi are really fresh. Quality in this restaurant is over the top, if you come in Brighton you MUST go there!

This is the place if you want authentic Korean & Japanese flavours. The food was fresh, delicious, exciting and the service was just as good. Cute and cozy atmosphere. If Asian food (including fresh sushi) is what you crave, you MUST come here.

We had a lovely evening and really enjoyed our mixed tempura and ramen noodles. The menu had a good selection of different Japanese dishes from sushi and sashimi to Katsu curry. The ramen was very good value and very tasty.

We went for Sunday lunch and had two hot pots. Both absolutely delicious! We went for the vegan hot pots, one was spicy the other one wasn't. We thoroughly enjoyed them! Will definitely go back to try other dishes as the menu was extensive!

Well, just average Japanese kitchen. The service pretty unfriendly (remind me travelling in china) except of one very friendly waitress, the only one smiling, you will easy recognize. Perhaps the Korean dishes are to prefer. But did not try.

We wanted a quick lunch - the restaurant was busy and they happily made room for us. The menu had lots to choose from and the service was quick. Food was amazing and very tasty. Would go again.

Visited last night for a Birthday dinner - recommended by Japanese work colleague and also family members. Booked table in advance (as recommended). Decor very reminiscent of restaurants visited in Japan - open to viewing. Extensive menu covering a wide range of japanese staples (sushi, ramen, udon etc), good desserts, wide range of drinks. Return? - oh yes, plenty more on the menu to try....

I really enjoyed o'shio. Staff were very friendly and a nice chilled vibe. Sushi was very good as was tempura dishes. They do Korean chicken and that was very good too. 100% recommend !
