Oriental Chef in Basildon

Tried here last night for the first time in ages. Everything was tasteless and so so salty! Won’t be returning.

Never order online. It is disgusting that they charge an extra £1.00 per dish than they do it order by phone. Plus they charge you £2 delivery charge but normally free by phone!! No logic. Never ordering from there again.

Very disappointed with my order of Chicken curry and egg fried rice. I had to play hunt the chicken, the whole dish was bulked out with thick cut carrot and onion and to add insult to injury nine of this was cooked in the sauce. They just poured chip shop curry sauce over the top! Not good enough, Oriental Chef!

Ordered food for delivery ordered before it was lovely this time ordered turned up wrong order what was right was soggy phoned up to tell them it was wrong and not very good quality ended up taking food back to be told rudely that there’s nothing wrong with the food this Chinese is expensive, but I thought pay for quality. Definitely not this time absolutely disgusting and the rudeness was really not necessary absolutely won’t be going back

Ordered 19/3 and I have to say, 10 out of 10. The lady that took my order on the phone followed all my requests, delicious meal that was delivered really quickly! I requested various things, super accommodating ♥️♥️ fab takeaway, thank you

First, I must declare myself as an Indian food regular but every now and again I fancy a bit of 'monosodium glutamate' Tonight, was such a night. Oriental Chef delivered well within the 60 minutes they quoted and was fresh and hot. The crispy chilli beef was actually crispy and not like toffee as so many are. and no MS insight. All in all, I really enjoyed this Chinese food but I will stick to my regular Indian!

Had a delivery last night that came half an hour earlier than told. Fair prices and delicious food. Recommend

The worst chinese I've ever had... just thrown it all in the bin! The curry was like water... no taste... the beansprouts tasted off... prawn crackers were so thin they just broke to bits... The rice had hard lumpy bits. Will be writing to them. £36 of chinese in the bin

The food here is really nice although a tad expensive and they make lots of mistakes. I was surprised to find no buffet available at 7.30pm AND they no longer accept card payments. Running a bare minimum service...

After England lost to Croatia in the World Cup tonight I was in need of some comfort so I thought that I'd seek solace in a take away. I had never bought anything from this place before and but the menu that had arrived via the letterbox looked ok so I decided to give it a try. The menu showed that it's open all week except Tuesday but as this was Wednesday I walked down there full of anticipation. According to the letterbox menu the closing time during the week is 10.30pm, I arrived a couple of minutes before 10pm and it was closed with all of the shutters down so I guess I'll never know what the food is like because I won't make the effort to spend my money there again.

Rang up to place an order for a delivery. The girl I spoke to was all huffing and puffing during my ordering and the food cost a fortune there (Quarter Duck nearly £10, although costs £3.50 in grocery shop) and delivery was made literally 10 minutes later, was our dinner really cooked properly and fresh ?? Won’t be going there again for delivery plus getting rid of taking card payment after 1st July 2018, I thought times were supposed to be moving forward with card payments and not cash.

The food was hot and tasty but getting low on quantity available and no signs of it being replenished. Having said that the restaurant was clean and well presented and the staff friendly and attentive. I will use them when I am next back in Wickford.

If used as a takeaway, be prepared to pay twice as much .

Have always used this Chinese but what an appalling service we had this time , we did a big order as had people round and when it was delivered there was a dish missing , so after ringing them they denied we ordered it ? It was read from a list and ticked off as ordered , they finally agreed they would cook it but we would have to collect , when we got there to collect she wanted us to pay for it again , disgusting , maybe in furture they should concentrate on taking an order correctly over the phone rather then keep chatting to someone else , putting on hold half way through , passing over to someone else , absolutely disgusted and will Not be using again , and certainly won’t be recommending

Order was wrong prawns instead of chicken and I'm allergic to prawns. Didnt want to replace either won't be using again.

Not so much a restaurant more a cafeteria quite sparse the food is ok for what you pay for there are better but there are no other full buffets in Wickford

Always a great buffet! Keep coming back! Come in every couple of weeks with my family. Always happy with the quality of good, service and selection of food. Still the best place to get Chinese around!

Ha habido pocas veces ha sido encantadora comida. Visitamos hoy y el buffet era tranquilo vacío, así que pedí que me recarga. Básicamente nos dice actitud hay comida allí. Me dijo que no estaban secos y de fideos de pollo que quería. Yo estaba esperando un lote recién entonces ella repite hay comida allí. Esperé más de 15 minutos no se recarga. Ahora vuelvo al mostrador preguntando cuándo se reponen comienza enojados conmigo diciendo que no sé cuando se repongan, ya que la cocina está ocupado. Traté de explicarle a ella todo lo que quería era un tiempo estimado como ella básicamente me dijo que los clientes de telefónica tendrá que esperar 30 minutos para que sus órdenes, así que preguntó por qué ella no puede darme un tiempo ya que estoy en la tienda y pagado por mi comida antes y ha esperado. Ella comenzó a moverse groseros conmigo. Ahora que ya había pagado en efectivo comida para mí y mis 2 hermanas para llevar. Nunca volveré allí de nuevo, ya que ella era grosera y no conseguir mi punto sobre el servicio de los clientes y dar una vez de cuánto tiempo tengo que esperar. Ella finalmente me dijo para salir a la tienda y nunca volver. La comida estaba seco y sobras que quería comida fresca. Temblar mi cabeza todavía en la incredulidad me habló y me trataron como si yo fuera a nadie. Me tomó fotos y ella me amenazó y luego salí a tomar su teléfono una foto de mí! ! Me sonrió y me dijo bien como sé que no he hecho nada malo. Comportamiento repugnante para un viaje de negocios y me quedé tranquila y con ella intentó razón sin alegría.

Worst food, had a hair in the noodles and they chicken wasn't good quality. Will not be ordering from here again

Usually happy with the service at Oriental chef however this time they gave us the wrong order for chow mein asked for it plain no veg came with loads of onion phoned to ask them to not charge the next time we order and they made it very complicated kept saying they will re do it now and I kept saying no already ate everything else don't want it now just either refund oh don't charge next time still she was not happy with that. Won't be using them again after the terrible service I just received

Worst chinese buffet I have been too. Waited an hour for it to be refilled as it didn't even have rice what chinese buffet doesn't have rice. When it was really filled it seemed like the left over from the takeaways. The restaurant was freezing!! You can't even do your own dessert has to be done for you!!!

Nice little place nice and quiet at lunch

Terrible place wont go again, tried it few times but just gets worse. Ask for coke and you get it from cheap plastic 2 litre bottle that's flat. Deserts cheap and boring ice cream is one scoop. Would be expensive at half price

Pedimos una entrega última noche y a pesar de esperar más de una hora para la comida estaba fría cuando llegó. Llamé al restaurante para hacerles saber y la persona con la que hablé dijo que era porque algunos de la orden no estaba en salsa, así que se enfría rápidamente, pero toda la orden estaba fría, incluso los platos que normalmente la más larga estancia caliente! Me explico y me ofrecieron un descuento del 10% en mi próximo pedido lo cual me parece muy mísero como a menos que gastar al menos 50 libras. El descuento ni siquiera la cantidad de un plato! En retrospectiva, desearía haber insistido en tener el orden cambiado ya, ni yo ni mi pareja o me sentí muy bien después de comer! Yo, así como el resto de mi familia que viven en la zona oriental del Chef en uso regularmente, así que es un enfoque muy corta de miras que tienen.

Been using this place for a couple of years and it's always excellent. Good food, good portion sizes and friendly staff. What's not to like!

We was on our way to a local pub for an evening meal, but due to a serious accident the road out of Wickford was cordoned off by the police, so like the majority of motorist were forced to make a u turn, heading back...

I haven't eaten in and can honestly say there are better restaurants looks wise, but the takeaway food that I regularly order from Oriental Chef is always on point, great taste, value and service. The best crispy shredded sweet chilli chicken I've ever had, and one thing that in my opinion separates them from all other Chinese takeaways in wickford is; You can tell the food is always freshly cooked due to the crispyness of foods such as sweet and sour chicken Hong style (and the crispy shredded I mentioned above) that are sometimes soggy not as tasty at other Chinese takeaways!

I visited wickford and went to this chinese buffet because I was a bit puckish . Their was a variety of dishes . They had soup, main courses spare ribs , noodles , fried rice two types and chicken different types and even chips with curry sauce. and also dessert lychee , pineapple. Mixed fruit and sweets . Service with a smile . Thanks . Lean.

After recently moving to the area we have tried many of the Chinese takeaways however this one definitely ranks highest. It's good for a regular takeaway, although the prices are a little higher than some others. It is also good for a take away buffet, you attend the actual restaurant and are given a takeaway container to fill up, this is great and much cheaper way of having a takeaway (especially is everyone wants something different)Highly recommend

Tried the mid-week buffet here and at £9.50, all you can eat, is great value. The restaurant wasn't very busy so some of the buffet offerings looked as if they had been out for a while and were not refreshed all the time we were there however the taste and flavour of the food was very good. I could tell their take away and delivery side were far busier than the restaurant. Although nicely laid out the dining room is in need of some re-decoration and I wasn't keen on the sticky floor! However, it is nice to have a good selection of Chinese food and all in all was a pleasant experience.

Nice range of dishes. Luckily have the intelligence to differentiate between spare ribs and chicken and sweet corn soup, in case of labelling misplacement. The buffet also includes fruit and ice cream if there's room. For £6.50 this is by far the best buffet experience I've had . Perplexed how anyone could be critical.

We love our Weekend Chinese Oriental Chef Take away treat that lasts until the following day. We knew we liked the food from this Restaurant because we have sampled most of it from the Buffet, so ordering the Take away option made sense. The ordering System is great and the speed and politeness of the Delivery cannot be faulted as the food arrives fresh and hot. Sometimes we feel as though we are privileged customers but I am sure that everyone gets the same service. The hot Vermicelli Noodle Singapore chow main is addictive; I can’t gate home to finish last night’s off.

This is by far our favourite. Have tried all the others and always end up back here. Whether it's takeaway or eat in.It is a buffet when you eat in and tables are set out in a slightly cafe style, so not the place for a romantic meal, but plenty of choice of food and the staff are always willing to help.

Im a new silent food critic in Essex, I tell it how it is. The take away service here is great, the resturant could do with a revamp and some atmosphere but overall satisfactory. Food on the whole is very good for a chinese.

I have to admit I'm not a big Chinese food eater. I hate monosodium glutamate and much prefer Indian food but every now and again I think, hmmm a Chinese would make a change. On such an occasion I tried the delivery service from Oriental Chef. The food arrived hot and in good time and was very tasty and no sign of the dreaded MS!Would deffo use them next time I get the urge.

The food here at Oriental Chef is really nice, provided you come at main hours as out of hours they scale down their buffet (but they will make more if you ask which means the food is always fresh). The place itself is not all that cosy and has a bit of a "Canteen" flair rather than a "nice" place to go out. However for going out on a "school night" it offers good value for money and tasty food but it is not a place to go for a "special" night out. Their takeaway is great. You can ring ahead and it will be ready for pick up, quality of food it always fresh and tasty.

An Ideal place for a lunch time meal. Eat as much as you can for a very reasonable price for lunch. Hot food always replenished when running low. Children are very welcome. Best Chinese for value for money. I have been there many times, evenings as well.

Wouldn't even give this 1 star! Me and my husband went here last night for our 3rd anniversary and we was very disappointed and we will never go back. We was the only people in there, there was hardly any food on the buffet and what what left (curry) had a skin on top of it and the lady that worked there kept stirring it! We felt like scavengers picking through what was left, obviously had been there since lunch time. I also found a few hairs in my food which put me off my meal. As I said me and my husband was the only people in there and we felt as if the staff was watching us and we felt very uncomfortable! When it came to paying the bill we decided not to complain because we knew Jackie Chan would appear from the back!... Do not eat here it's a waste of money we paid £30 for one platefull from the buffet!

Our takeaway order arrived in 35 minutes and it was all there and correct, there was also a bag of prawn crackers included :-) It was lovely and warm and the portion sizes looked good, the tubs were full to the brim and the lids crammed shut so we really got a lot of food. The meat dishes all had quite a bit of meat in them (there was none of that hunting around through the veg or sauce to only find one or two bits of meat). The chicken balls wall huge! There was a massive lump of fresh chicken surrounded in a lovely thick batter that was soft in the middle and crispy (but not dry or burnt) outside. It was all very well cooked and not at all greasy or oily as some Chinese's can be. It was fresh and full of flavours. It was also very good value for money. We had seven dishes that came to £31.70. Since it was free delivery and the large size of the portions, we were very happy.The staff also seem nice. I only spoke to one over the phone and the delivery man but both were polite and the delivery guy was very happy and friendly.We'd definitely order a takeaway again and we want to eat in the restaurant too. We popped into the restaurant when we picked up the takeaway menu and it looked nice and clean and there were a few people waiting for lunch even though it wasn't open yet. According to the menu they do a lunch time deal and a buffet so we'll be giving Oriental Chef another go.

Me and my family stumbled upon this place a few months back and have been back countless times since! We were blown away by the staff, service and quality of food! We go for the all you can eat buffet and its amazing! No it's not a massive buffet with hundreds of dishes to choose from but those restaurants in the Basildon area for me lack quality and everything tastes the same!! It's a smaller buffet where items are replaced with small batches regularly and they almost cater to what you are eating lots of! It hasn't got a canteen feel to it like others! My personal favourites from the buffet are: crispy dick pancakes, Hong Kong style chicken, calamari and salt and pepper prawns! I don't know why the place isn't heaving with people! A must go for a great Chinese fix!

Came here for fathers day with family and all had a nice time and food was nice excellant service its not a fancy posh buffet but its some were to take kids aswell as staff welcombe children of all ages.i like it here kos its reasonable with prices.would recommend with children.use this buffet alot at lunch times when passing as always good.

We live locally so order takeaway from here fairly often, always arrives within 30 minutes and always nice and hot. I get on very well with the staff on the phone and never had a wrong order yet which is good! Cannot really comment on the buffet as haven't had it, i have walked past a few times though and collected from the chinese and it looks clean and tidy inside, the buffet does look small so i think i'll stick to the takeaway, what we prefer anyway

This place is ideal if you want somewhere to go and eat quickly without all the usual wait of a restaurant. The food variety is reasonable and so is the standard. Please don't go with too high an expectation and remember you only get what you pay for. There is plenty of room for improvement but I think the core business is the takeaway.

We have been going here for some time and put up with a lot from the buffet restaurant staff. Like getting charged for drinks we did not have to generally getting over charged for the buffet. Also the food has been very poor with lack of choice in the buffet. But we as a group went in there for the last time last night which was a Friday. This time my wife joined us to have a meal but she was SHOCKED with the staffs attitude and the dried out good on offer. The main insult came at 9:25 pm whilst we was still eating as the staff cleared the food away with out asking us if we wanted any more. They even cleared the desert area away and started to turn some of the lights off. We are a big group who they would class as regulars but when we complained the staff just Laughed. At that point we decided to leave but they still wanted to charge us full price even tho we left empty stomachs. This could be a very good business's if different people run it. VERY POOR and would say to you reading this DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME. A cold Macdonalds is worth more than there food and attitude to customers.

Not very fond of buffets and this one the food all tasted the same, apart from the duck and pancakes. was plenty of food there . wouldn't visit again.

We have tried many Chinese takeaways in the local area and found this to be average at best.Due to the restaurant being in close proximity to the telephone, you can only just hear the person taking the order and it is very frustrating.The dishes are a bit hit and miss really. Some dishes are lovely, like the sweet and sour chicken, but others, chicken chew mien, not so much. They tend to be a bit tasteless and fatty.Prices and portion sizes are average. The food is not piping hot on arrival; it’s on the cold side so we always have to give it a 20 second burst in the microwave.We have had issues in the past with dishes missing from the order. We have contacted them and they have always sent the missing dish but it is obviously too late to be eaten with the main meal.Delivery time is another issue; sometimes over an hour.

Rang this place to check it was open, they said they'd been open an hour ago so we headed on down. Got there, and there was no food out! NO food out at all! Woman said she'd start bringing out the food.Gradually and I mean gradually they began to bring it out. So slowly we chose our food, there is a food wastage policy here, they'll charge you for leaving any food which is not a nice feeling to be worried about something you may not like, felt like a child at school afraid to leave anything incase the dinner lady tells me off! They have signs on the tables to remind you about this.So I tried very small portions and I did end up forcing myself to eat this piece of what was supposed to be chicken, but seriously it must have been canned chicken because it was like soft rubber, I felt ill.I will not be going again, the floor was sticky under my shoes, the place has no heating and is quite cold so I kept my coat on.No charm, very canteen like, which minimal choice, with only dried out fruit and 1 choc cake for afters! Browned dried lettuce available too but who would eat it is anybody's guess?All this for £9.95 on a mid week day and more at weekend. (and of course drinks are extra)Next time I will be going back to Brentwood Azumis.

Just the worst Chinese take away I've ever had . Tasteless, chewy , dry, bland . Not exactly cheap either . Never again , will go back to our usual takeaway from now on

Me and my family have visited a few times over the past 6months. the first time was by chance because everywhere else was full and we had never tried it before. The Buffet was not huge BUT it doesn't pretend to be. There were 6 of us all with different requirements and taste buds and we all found suitable food that was tasty. The restaurant seemed clean and staff were young and friendly. Will be back again.

Frequent diner here - not a huge variety of buffet food but always freshly cooked and very tasty. Included in the price is a small selection of ice cream, fruit and sweets for dessert. Great place for a quick meal and very good value.

Having been happy with the takeaway service previously, I decided to opt for the all you can eat buffet and sit inside. Whilst the food from the takeaway is hot and fresh this buffet certainly was not and there was very little choice with just a few scrapings left in some of the containers. The food had gone very dry and no one was keeping an eye on it and either rotating the food, replacing it or even just topping it up with fresh product. I have eaten at a few of these types of restaurant before but certainly wont be using the buffet here again. Oh, and please smile, we are your customers, not your enemy!

I defiantly will not be going back again. We walked in at 1.45 pm for all you can eat lunch. At 2.10 the waitress came over to our table asking if her had finished as the restaurant closes at 2.30pm. I felt rushed to finish my lunch, which wasn't very aesthetically pleasing, to say the least. When we approached the buffet cart to get out lunch, it was the bare minimum. Firstly we decided on sharing some Duck Pancakes, it took us a while to figure out where the hoy sin sauce was... we was quickly directed by a staff member to a yellow unlabeled ketchup bottle, the last place I would expect to find hoy sin sauce. On the second visit up there was our first visit for our main course. Well I have never been so confused in my life on choosing food. Not through the lack of majority, or the small amount of each dish, or ever where to start, it was the fact that I had no idea what I was choosing to eat. The labels were all in the wrong place. Underneath "Squid in oyster sauce" was ... CHIPS! under "sweetcorn and chicken soup" was ... SPARE RIBS. This was the majority of the way along the cart. When we finally distinguished what was what, we sat down to eat. After all this commotion of choosing what to eat, I didn't have high expectations. I wasn't disappointed from my expectations. The food was awful, however with the £5 per item that wasn't eaten policy "No wastage" I was to worried to leave anything. I literally ate the bare minimum. So above all I will not recommend it at all!

Check your bill before you leave. The till seems to have a mind of it's own when adding up the amount.
