Orbis Oakham in Rutland

The Angler has had a “customer confusing” time during the last five’s years as it morphed through many stages from The Mill Street Pub and Kitchen in 2019 to its current new Nepalese style dining set up. At each stage I’ve giver The Angler a try and while there were moments of inspirational magnificence from many of its proprietors, there was sadly no consistency with its menu offer, food quality or service. Considering the above (and knowing there are 6 other Asian restaurants in town)I was still happy to try the new Nepalese offering to assess its potential and I am happy to report that I enjoyed the food and the enthusiasm from the team yesterday evening. Everything we ordered was delivered to our table well cooked and well presented and everything tasted very good. I had a lamb dish which was very tasty with well cooked and tender lamb meat. The two different chicken main courses my friends enjoyed were equally delicious. We shared three starters which also hit the spot. Good tasty food. Great service and good value!! Well done to Suq & Manish and their colleagues for a good dining experience. Stay consistent with the food, service and value and we will be back for more. No consistency equals no customers!!

Booked a hen party here 4 weeks ago. Only to be told 48hrs before that they are unable to fulfil our preorder menu as they are changing ownership (Again!!!) and all food orders cancelled. Therefore we would have to order on the night whatever is left Shocking behaviour! And now a cancelled hen party. Upset bride and guests!! Tho as they are changing ownership they probably won’t care about my review anyway

Stayed in this hotel for 3 nights and had a meal each night. Hotel does not serve breakfast which I knew in advance. Room was large and airy and clean, nice bed with crisp clean bedding, great onsuite shower. Stairs very grubby, new carpet needed asap as it gives a bad impression. For some reason loud music is played until 11pm which was bit annoying especially as the bar only had a handful of drinkers. Parking is free but limited. Evening meals were interesting, it seemed very quiet with only a few diners each evening. Food was good and reasonably priced, however, the service was very hit or miss. 3rd night I got a beer and seated in conservatory near a family of 4 and asked if the waitress to take my order, her reply was that it was very busy so could I order from the bar, really 5 people and 2 in the bar ! Some of the staff seemed keen and attentive, others seemed to be somewhere else.

My Brother and I went to The Angler for dinner to celebrate his 50th. We had seen mixed reviews but thought we would still give it a try as the menu looked good. Unfortunately we went on a bad day. Not only were nearly all the mains not available for the dinner, but they also didn’t bring out all of our starters, and when I enquired where our missing starter was they came and told us it was sold out, but Kitchen hadn’t told them!. We ordered the steaks which were not the best and definitely not worth the money, we also ordered the 3 Cheese Macaroni, which had no cheese and was just pasta in a peppercorn sauce! It was a really disappointing meal for what should have been a special meal. My recommendation is to call in advance to check what they actually have on the menu if u are looking to go.

Had dinner here with my family for my birthday. Service was first class and our meal was exceptional. Beautifully cooked and presented. A real jewel in Oakham

Stayed here a couple of years ago when it was run by a different firm and had a great stay. Forward to the present and it is a shadow of what it was. The carpets leading to the rooms were filthy and a hoover and other detrtious (tissue paper) remained in the same place on the stairs for 3 days so no cleaning. The 'secure' night door was permanently unlocked so anyone could access the accommodation floors 24/7. The room was dusty and looked like it had not been cleaned for a long time. The tea/coffee facility was never replenished. The usual showergel/soap dispensers were nearly empty and looked like they had been like it for a long time. The shower was dirty. In the evenings there was the constant drone of music which completely ruined any sense of peace in your room. The music eminated from The Angler bar on the ground floor which was always empty so why the music was so loud is a mystery. At 11pm the music stopped. It seems like the current owner has no desire to put any effort into the quality of the accommodation and I would not recommend this place to anyone. Do not waste yehard earned money here. I will never stay here again.

Well what can i say about the Angler in Oakham, we arrived and was shown to a table, the young lady who did this was very nice, took our dinks order and gave us a menu, we were told that certain things on the menu was not available, food just edible, but the biggest shocker was the following. We are not sure what started it but the chef in this place started shouting at this young waitress he was swearing at her calling her names, this we could hear from where we were sitting, we could see she was visible upset she looked no older than 17 years old, the manager did nothing to stop this happening, what a way to treat the staff. Would we go back no we would not, and if i was this young waitress i would not go back to be treated in this way.

On arrival, we immediately ordered our fish and chips as we were hungry. We sat down with our drink and waited, and waited. When we asked the waitress how much longer, her reply was not long. We waited - in total - at least an hour. After another long wait, we were told the chef was on his own due to the other chef being off after a family crisis. Also the Manager was off sick. Another wait and eventually our not overly inspiring fish and chips arrived. If we had been told that there was a long wait for food, we would have gone elsewhere. We told them how disappointed we were and that we would not pay full price for our meals. We were charged for one. We are only staying in Oakham for two nights so won’t be returning to this pub tomorrow!

Atmosphere not that great as we had to eat in the bar and it was lively to say the least. We couldnt eat in the restaurant as it was booked out for an event, which is fair enough. They did kindly move us further away when they could though. Food was ok, but overpriced for what it is. I had the lobster loaded fries, and it was very stodgy and greasy. Mac & Cheese very bland, however the snapper was lovely. Overall mixed bag with the meals

The check in was not great there was no direction to receptionist the chef had to check us in. As the room wasn't ready admittedly cheap but the atmosphere really let it down offering cocktails turned out only certain cocktails are available. We arrived and didn't feel welcome at all.

We called on Tuesday to specifically book bottomless brunch with Prosecco on Friday, it was all confirmed available. Arrived on Friday drinks poured to be then advised we needed to order from the main menu as they don’t do bottomless brunch anymore. This was not explained when we checked in. I ordered a plain burger, it was shocking, so dry it was hard to swallow and tasteless. We were the only customers in the pub and it took 45 mins for a burger and a harissa cauliflower. Will definitely not return or recommend

Visited for Mothers day, on arrival we were handed the limited menu consisting of roast dinners only which we was not advertised when booking. When asked if we could order off the standard menu as we had fussy eaters with us we were told that there was no other foods in the kitchen. We decided to just stay for a drink and move on else where but as we were half way through the drinks they brought us out 3 roast pork dinners that we had not ordered, as we turned them away we were made to feel uncomfortable as the waiter was persistent that we had ordered and were to eat them. Luckily the bar man intervened and explained that we had certainly not ordered. I cant see how this mistake was made as we were the only table in the place. Cannot fault the bar man however the rest of the staff were rude and pushy. Will not be returning and would not recommend!

Unfortunately we had to walk out before even ordering! We had booked a table, we were seated and then just left there, no menus no offer of a drink order. I appreciate it was a busy Mother’s Day Sunday but be prepared. The staff didn’t seem to know what they doing or where anything was. Luckily we got in somewhere else.

Food decidedly average and the rare beef and horseradish sandwich was overcooked minute steak with no horseradish. Advertised on Facebook as kids eat free during half-term to be told after we have eaten this is only In the evening. The icing on the cake was a member on staff on a teams meeting swearing in front of my child. We won't be returning.

Very slow service manager unwelcoming and distracted, an admission he made himself, puddings inedible taken off bill which was appreciated but shouldn't happen, not alot of choice of food, overall a really unpleasant experience won't be returning. Young lad in kitchen very pleasant.

We stayed at The Angler for one night, that was a mistake. There are several other places to stay in Oakham and we wished that we had chosen one of them instead. On arrival, the welcome was cold and the staff member was uninterested, but when I say welcome, well there was no welcome. We were handed a room key and a piece of paper with a few numbers on it, this was the key code for the external entrance door. We were told to go back outside and to find this door ourselves. At this point we realised that this accommodation was not for anybody disabled or who had difficulty in walking. This entrance door was up several steep steps, the digital lock had no lighting and it was impossible to see what I was doing. After several attempts we managed to get inside, a further steep staircase was challenged before we reached the accommodation floor, the carpet was filthy and it looked like it had not been vacuumed in days. The room looked ok and ignoring the black mould inside the shower cubicle we settled down. A small ‘beer’ fridge was placed on the dressing table, however this did not work. We looked for a teaspoon to make a cup of tea, but there was not one, but neither were there any tea bags. I plugged my iPhone charger cable into the USB socket beside the bed, this did not work. A cold draught was blowing through the sash window as if the window was actually still open. The pub to which this accommodation is situated above regularly has live music in the bar and it was our misfortune to stay here on one of those occasions. The band may as well have set up at the bottom of our bed because the music and singing was so loud, we had difficulty hearing the TV. We looked for a glass to have a drink of something that we had brought with us, but there were no glasses. No tissues. No biscuits. No breakfast offered in the morning. No check out information. Suffice it to say that we will not be returning to stay here again, and I suggest that anybody else considering a stay here think again, but if they do please remember to refuse room 5, you have been warned.

Stopped here for lunch on a cold and wet February. Service and food were excellent. Nothing too much trouble and must mention Cameron who did more than was expected to make it a great lunch.

Great place, staff were so friendly and helpful but the food let them down. We ordered the ribs and they looked amazing but it was so over cooked, we couldn't even cut into it without a struggle. It should have been falling off the bone. Full refund given though and dealt with very promptly and professionally. Chef didn't have whites on, just in t shirt and jeans.

Stayed here and dined in the restaurant. Everyone was very welcoming and enthusiastic, keen to make our stay enjoyable. Cam, head chef, was very knowledgeable and happy to talk about the menu and food in general. Our meal was first rate, I really couldn’t have asked for better.

Have been to the Angler 3 times over the past month, once for Sunday roast and twice on a Saturday evening. Each time the food, and the service, has been spot on. The quality of the food has been excellent and the manager is an absolute star. Could not recommend this restaurant highly enough……..

Delicious, cooked fresh to order calves liver, mash, crispy bacon, gravy and tasty small onions. Very welcoming chef. Sensibly priced too. Definitely worth a second visit.

Initially we only came in for a new years day drink but ended up staying for dinner . Menu had lots to choose from . Kids menu was great. All ten of us thouroughly enjoyed our meals. Great atmosphere and friendly staff . Highly recommend

Unbelievably bad. I had The Mac Daddy: dry Cajun chicken with really thick slices of fat placed on top of the chicken, which had burnt black edges - this I realised was the bacon, which was disgusting and totally inedible. The worst meal I have ever been presented with.
