Went to this bar for NYE.. It was a shame they dint serve food or any snacks at all on NYE. Ofcourse everyone got there nice and early to avoid the crowd only to find out the kitchen was closed for the night. The staff was good and helpful. The bar sure offers an amazing view for the fireworks for NYE . Its a good pit stop..

Came here with friends late afternoon and were lucky to hit happy hour which runs from 5pm til 8pm. It was amazing to order 3 cocktails in London for just under £13! The music was good and progressively getting louder taking us into the evening. We had no problem getting a seat upstairs and downstairs there is a big club space. Would come here again and would stay later next time. We only left as we had booked the boat show comedy club nearby. No children allowed though even if they just need the toilet..we saw a few families trying to come to use the loo and were refused entry.

I had the unfortunate experience of coming to this place. The management especially Hannah are rude - as a manager you should pride yourself on customer service - however it is quite clear to see that she has non. Where do I start...my friend booked her 25th birthday in this venue and as you can imagine that's a pretty big birthday. From start to finish the night was dire. Hannah told my friend that she could start setting up the sweet table from 6pm and then at 7pm the bar would be closed off from business - in order for them to start setting up at 8pm which was the time the booking had been made. This DID NOT HAPPEN. Hannah response to this was that guests did not arrive until after 8:30...how do you expect guests to get into a venue when you've only just started setting up at 8pm?!? And regardless of when guests arrive - if someone who has PAID for a private venue from 8pm til 3am - why does it make a difference what time guests arrive? Hannah also became confrontational towards my friend as a manager you should pride pride yourself on keeping calm and not letting situations get the better of you - yes we're only human - however if you're going to be a manager and be confrontational in your place of work, how does that make sense? I will not be coming to this place EVER again. Management have a total lack of respect for their guests and ruined what should have been a magical birthday.

My and my fiancé found opal completely by chance, and we are so glad we did. They do really nice cocktails, we tried a few ... woo woo, long island ice tea, pornstar martini and finished with a star of soho. opal has a wonderful feel to it, whether you are going out for a few drinks with friends, having a date night or just popping in for a quick drink, i feel it caters for all. Will definitely be returning soon.

Visited when waiting to board a river cruise from Embankment Pier opposite. The place wasn't even very busy but bar service was shockingly slow and incompetent. As a bar it is reasonably nice to visit but given its prestige location it falls way short of the standard it should be achieving. More like a local boozer than quality riverside establishment. Better find a nearby off licence and sit by the river. If this place had fast efficient service it would be well on the way to making the grade. Smacks of poor management.

Due to its very easily accessible location, and the fact that I have booked a booth here before, I chose Opal as the meeting place for 16 girls gathering for welcome drinks, to kick off a hen do! I initially requested a booth via DesignMyNight.com but despite receiving an email stating someone would contact me to confirm my booking, nobody did. I then contacted Opal direct via their website, and Laura was very good in responding quickly and assisting me with my request. It was necessary to pay a £25 deposit to secure the booth, but this was redeemable against food or drinks. I enquired about ordering a couple of bottles of prosecco for the table on arrival, but at £37.50 each I thought better of it as my deposit didn't even cover one bottle! So instead I ordered 3 sharing food platters (£11-16 each) when we had all arrived, and paid the little extra. Unfortunately we were only starting out at Opal and our 1-3pm reservation did not fall into Happy Hour - this would be a much better time to come considering the costs of drinks. However, we did manage to consume a good few bottles in the two hours we were there .. The bar was very empty when we arrived, and as we were 10 minutes early our booth had not been allocated. The barman rang through to Ashley who appeared (genie in a bottle?!) and placed two 'reserved' cards on the two tables nearest the door. This worked for us as it was a nice day and we were still able to benefit from the fresh breeze coming through the open front doors, and also catch our guests as they arrived - I suspect that in a busier time, this would have been a rather annoying place to be seated due to the constant comings and goings of customers. Ashley checked on us a couple of times to ensure we had everything we needed, and I had no cause for complaint. Personally, I think Opal could do with a bit of a 'tart up' on the ground floor bar - the white seating looks a little tired, and the cushions are a little tatty. Bars always look better at night but the downstairs bar looks more glitzy, probably helped by the fact the furniture is black and the lighting more conducive to a bar atmosphere. When we left I went over and told the barman we were going, and thanked him. Opal was a good starting point for our day, and I would return ..

We had a group of 35 of us that came here after a party cruise on the Thames. It was an excellent night. We had booked a booth beforehand for £25 which you can then use as a bar tab (so it's actually free to book). The staff were very easy to deal with and everything was done by email. Great night

Very close to Embankment station and located over two floors, this is recommended for the 'Happy Hour' that runs every day from 5 til 7pm (half price beers and wine plus specials on the cocktails). The upstairs bar is quite small and often gets busy, with views of the Thames, so it can can be hard to get a table sometimes. The basement bar is more of a club, with no draft beer on tap.

We reserved a booth downstairs for my sisters hen party. The booth cost £25 to reserve and it was decorated with balloons, confetti and willy straws. We used the deposit for a tab so it was good value and entry was free before 11pm other £5 thereafter. The bar is located right next to embankment station. The DJ played a good variation of music, the bar got more lively after 11am and it did get packed. The bar closes at 3am. The dance floor was small and it did get warm. The crowd was mixed and quite a few desperate men so ladies beware. The drinks were OK but the plastic cups were annoying and not nice to drink from. All in all a good night but it does attract tourists and a few weirdos!

Opal Bar is one of my favourite places to go to, they have a bar upstairs that always has a brill atmosphere. The cocktails are to die for and they do 50% off everyday between something like 5pm and 8pm (around that time anyway). They also have a massive nightclub downstairs, I have literally gone there 3 weekends in a row! My friendsa and I just love it, they get the music so right and I have never been to a club/bar where the staff go to such trouble to make sure your night is special. They have some brilliant VIP booths i was so shocked to find out how cheap it is to reserve one for the whole night. I only paid £25 for a gorgeous VIP Area got it back as a bar tab may i add and they also gave me a bottle of bubbles!Got to say it will now be a regular of ours trust me go check it out!

7 of us went to Opal for a birthday. A bartender gave us a menu, then charged us a higher price. When we pointed this out the bar manager was rude and aggressive so we all ended up leaving without a drink when he refused to honour the price advertised. Honestly can't believe how awful the bar staff were over £2.50! Also a blatant disregard for the law regarding pricinghaving said that, I think I should mention that the bouncers were some of the nicest ive encountered in my 7 years in the city. They should really work somewhere else!

I went here for NYE and it was a huge mistake. It seemed as though the management didn't care about the safety of its customers as they clearly oversold the event, but I'll get to that later. The bar started of with 5 people and by 11pm there was only 2 people serving at the bar. It took over 45 minutes to get a drink. When it got to midnight everyone wanted to go outside and see the fireworks and you would think a bar along the river would have prepared for this, but they didn't. The smoking area was full and around 100 people were still trying to get out. I got stuck near the stairs of the entrance and spent the countdown, along with other people trying not to get crushed by everyone trying to get out. Security and management had no control of this situation and it was very lucky no one got seriously hurt.

Been a couple of times over the years but this trip was disappointing. This was a Christmas party night so I appreciate it was going to be busy however:-The bar was well understaffed. They ran out of bottled beer in the fridge so served very warm bottles. The bar man looked annoyed when I asked for a bucket of ice to chill them in!The white plastic glasses had to be replaced a couple of times being dirty with lipstick on. People were crammed with the whole night appearing to be about profit over people's comfort. The main issue was clearly the staff just did not care at all. Won't bother again I'm afraid.

Had a bad experience here a few years ago (power-hungry bouncers) so was reluctant to come, but the calling for a fancy-dress themed night on the tiles was too strong to resist. This time around the security on the door were friendly and welcoming, which is a good start. It's a decent sized place with two floors playing different music. There's a nice selection of drinks, but once it gets busy don't expect to be able to actually get one. One half of the bar in the downstairs area was five people deep so I tried my luck further up at an empty part of the bar, only to learn why no one was queuing there. A decent sized bar with one bar man who apparently doesn't "do" cocktails. Or spirits. If you want beer or wine, you could go to him, but that was his lot. The other two bar staff at the other end were decent enough, but it's not enough pairs of hands on a busy Saturday night. Don't you want your clientele to get a tiny bit tipsy? Isn't that half the point? There was also one guy who hung around behind the bar as if he was there to serve drinks but didn't serve anyone, didn't tidy anything, didn't *do* anything. Ever. It makes you more frustrated when you're waiting twenty minutes to be served and someone is just standing on the other side of the bar chatting and not helping out. This event was for Halloween and they'd put a good effort into decorating the place. Everyone there had made a great effort with their costumes, so it was a great atmosphere. We asked the DJ to switch up the genre of the music he was playing (dance to R&B) and he was more than happy to oblige as it got all of the wallflowers onto the dance floor. He also took requests, which is rare these days with the Mac DJs, and made the whole night a lot of fun. Security inside the venue was also really responsive. We had an issue with a drunk guy harassing us and then getting aggressive with the men in our group, and a security man escorted him out as soon as I complained to him. Overall, Opal is a nice bar, with reasonable prices (if you can buy a drink!) and a fantastic Central London location. We'll be back!

I have been here before, it was good then, last night was a bit of a disappointment. From the start the doormen were really friendly (I was a bit worried from other reviews that they were going to be the opposite) but we found them welcoming and funny. 1st stop was the ladies toilet...where the hand driers weren't working, not a problem as there is a woman sitting on a stool in there selling perfumes etc and she was passing out paper towels. However every time I went to the loo, and she passed me a paper towel, she asked for money! I know everyone has to earn a living but I don't expect to be badgered for money when I haven't even used any of her products! In the end I wiped my hands on my top so I didn't have to go near her again. She wasn't very friendly and frankly if I wanted to tip her I would, she shouldn't be begging for money! Next stop was the bar...the girl who served us must have been new, she was extremely slow and couldn't make any cocktails or work the till, after waiting 20 minutes to be served my partners Coke was like water so I asked her to change it as the syrup had obviously gone. Being on the bar trade myself I know how easy it is to show someone how to change a mixer, and it should be one of the 1st things she was taught, but it obviously wasn't as she had to wait for one of the other staff to finish who he was serving and then make our cocktail and change the Coke syrup. I did feel sorry for her as she was well out of her depth, but she should have been trained properly on a quieter night to prepare for a busy night, a mess up on managements part there. The other staff were unfriendly and moody. It was half price drinks till 10pm, however when we purchased a drink at 9.45 the barman charged my other half full price, I didn't know this till we were on our way home, and discovered he tried to over charge my friend too but she queried it and he told her happy hour was till 9pm...well it clearly states on your Facebook page it's 10pm! If I'd have known I would have got a refund but it was too late by the time we were on our way home. The DJ kept repeating songs which was annoying. Overall it was a good night, but I expect that heavily relied on the company rather than where we were. If I'd of paid to get in I would be asking for my money back. An ok venue, could be ALOT better given its location, I don't think opal bar fully appreciate how lucky they are to have such a venue on the Thames!

We negotiated a discounted entry fee (£5 each instead of £10) and to our surprise the place was practically empty at 11:45pm on Saturday night. Things quickly changed with the arrival of at least 3 hen night parties. We had a company event on a boat and thought for ease we would go for drinks at opal....big mistake...Firstly the girl at the front bringing people in didn't really listen and didn't seem to know what she was doing...she seemed more interested in chatting up the security guys.We had reserved a table...she brought us to our tables and another party was sitting there...she tried to say oh they here after you....however their name tags were on the table so opal staff must have put them there. One of my party was a guy of 27 years old..because he didn't have ID the security wouldn't let him in...so we had 1 person out of 28 not allowed in...when I tried to reason they didn't want to know...there was no customer effort...Avoid this place like the plague....like the other reviews say...security who want to exert power when it's not needed...we work for a big company and we will ensure no more events here...well done opal!!!!

I thought that going here after a boat party on the Thames for my 30th birthday would be a great idea, how wrong could I be?! We had booked an area and paid for it and had to be there for a certain time, which we were. The staff kept us waiting in the rain for approx 20-30 minutes. As it turned out they had taken out money & failed to provide an area for us to sit in so we got shoved on a table next to the door! Then our drinks arrived. I was sat talking to my partner when a member of staff & door staff came over to me & "escorted" more like dragged may I add, outside gave me a bottle of water and told me to drink it. At this point I was rather shocked and refused to drink the water without being told what I had done to deserve being dragged outside and labelled too drunk to continue the night with all my party guests inside. I had to leave. Leaving my guests and very upset. Well done Opal bar for ruining my 30th birthday, I do not say that lightly. My party were inside and unaware I had had to leave therefore having to leave on my own! Disgusting behaviour and judgement by the staff & door staff of Opal bar. Would not reccome mind to anyone!!

I ate a tasty falafel burger and fries. I had to coach the bartender on giving water, with ice AND lemon, American-style. He was kind enough to oblige. =) Couldn't take my credit card because it didn't have that new microchip so I had to go get money out of the ATM, only to discover that they don't take Euros! Bring UK LBs with you to spend at this place. Otherwise, it was tiny and cozy.

Although it may be arguable that Halloween is not the best day to go out and thereafter rate a venue, but despite saints fighting that night over a space at a bar to get a drink, kitties with their booties on duty with security guards and a man trying to take on three bouncers, I was actually most saddened by the cheeky charge on my friends drink order. I guess we would have never known if not for the itemised receipt. Explains all the "way expensive" comments in passing...

After having a really enjoyable night out with friends on Saturday night for Halloween, I was approached by a pretty crude security guy who supposedly worked there. At first he was harmless and just being flirty but that quickly turned into demanding and downright creepy. My friend quite forcefully told him to back off, in which he told her to stop being jealous and continued to try and hug me. He told us he was on a break and if I was to return to Opal to ask for 'Anthony' - whether that was his name or not - who knows?! After pestering us for a good 15/20 mins - he gave up and walked way. About 20 mins later unfortunately we had to walk back past the bar, where 'Anthony' followed us and continued to pester me. He walked away saying some incredibly disgusting things (which I won't repeat here). If our cab didn't arrive at the same time I would've walked back in Opal and complained. Not acceptable!! I thought security was there to keep everyone safe?! not be creepy and hit on every girl who walks past!! Ruined my night.

Had the best time at Opal, staff were incredibly friendly. We went for the birthday package which was such good value for money - and they through in champers which was incredibly sweet! Music was rnb/mainstream but perfect for a great night out, with plenty of space to dance and booths to chat! Thank you and would definitely recommend!

I used to go this bar regularly when I was a student, and over the last couple of years I have been back-the club has now changed hands. I went to drop in for a drink (arriving on my own) and was told by the rude, aggressive and borderline hostile door staff that they no longer 'let single people in to drink.' This was a 6pm on a Sunday. Crazy stuff-not sure what has happened with this place but there are 1,000 better places to go in London.

Went with a large group of friends had booked a table, we were given a table for barely 8 people even though booked for twenty - when spoke to the manager he said is policy to only seat a third of the group!?! I had booked an area for 20 people. Were met with very aggressive security staff, who were using threatening language, on entry and had ID confiscated (to be able to hold party leaders accountable for any trouble). This is not a policy that I have ever encountered before at any other venues. ID was stored in the coat pocket of door staff who was standing outside the venue on the street! Reserved area was much smaller than anticipated and I was overcharged for the package I had ordered. Overall a very unfriendly atmosphere. Would not recommend.

Just called in for an after work drink with a friend, did feel a bit 'checked out' (not in a good way!) by the doorman. But it was happy hour and had a really nice cocktail - jug. Can't say it was particularly friendly, we had our table wiped every few minutes - from where our glasses / jug were wet! But the cocktail was nice!

We were randomly asked to leave for a 10 minute break because one of their staff decided one of our group (of three) was drunk. This was not the case; we were all standing, talking and dancing to tunes we liked. Once they realised we were a group we were all ushered out. We asked to use the toilet first and were denied. We kept asking why we were being kicked out, what had we done wrong, etc. No explanation came. Two of us ended up in some sort of holding pen they had established on the public street. Whilst we decided where to go next it turns out they were having a serious argument, inside the venue entrance foyer, with the 3rd person in our group because he had asked to speak to a manager. The ushered him, forcefully, to the public street and outside their holding pen. A staff member then comes up to us two in the holding pen and explains our other friend was being abusive and therefore we would no longer be allowed to stay in the holding pen. Knowing my friend is never abusive to anyone it sounded highly questionable. After finding our friend he was somewhat distressed because a female member of staff had grabbed and smashed his smartphone on the pavement and apparently pushed him in the face (common assault). It seems he was attempting to take a photo of her after she had assaulted him, at which point she committed a further crime of property damage. After recovering the battery and cover of his phone from nearly 20 meters away we discover the screen is broken. So we confront the staff concerning the deliberate property damage. Now they become aggressive and claim we are "invading their personal space" (we were not any closer than you would be to anyone you are having a conversation with) and that they "have the right to put us on the floor" (which we assume to be a threat of physical violence). At this point we explain that they certainly do not have any right to engage in physical violence as they are just civilians like us. At this point one of their staff says they have the legal right to put us on the floor. At this point I question whether he actually knows the law. I explain that I don't know where you are from but that I am English and that I know what the law is in the UK. At this point he accuses me of being racist and from that point on I am stonewalled and they won't even speak to me at all; just completely ignored. Until much later on when another member of staff starts shouting at me saying I am racist and when I'm shaking my head in disgust he starts shouting "you don't remember what you said do you?". Once again making the insinuation that not only was I racist but also that I can't remember things so I must be drunk. I just shake my head and ignore his accusations. At this point, since the staff were uninterested in resolving the property damage amicably, we had called the police.Police arrived and for some reason chose to speak with the staff first before us despite it being us who called them. Once we finally got to speak to the officer it was already too late as the staff had told him an untrue series of events. At this point he assumed we were violent and was highly defensive towards us and asked to step away from him. Once he realised we may not be as violent as the staff had claimed he allowed us to speak to him one at a time. But he was still unfairly biased and assumed we were all drunk. He reviewed the CCTV footage but apparently the angle of the camera was not good enough because he said he could see nothing where his phone was smashed by the staff nor the shove against his face. We were not allowed to see the footage and the staff accompanied the officer to the CCTV room so could have told him anything to slant his view of the incident.Earlier, before the police arrived, the female member of staff (assailant) was seen crying and upset (probably because she realised she had done something massively wrong and unprofessional). She was told to go inside by other staff and was not seen again for at least 2 hours. We heard a phone call between her and another staff member (the one who doesn't understand UK law) and this member of staff was telling her to "take photos of her red eye" and "because I've seen how these situations can go" and then he told her again "make sure to take some photos of it". So we interpreted this as them preparing fabricated evidence that my friend had assaulted her. In reality it was probably just the amount she had been crying about her unprofessionalism (that worst case, she could lose her job, perhaps) which could have turned her eye red. Though later on we saw her again standing at the main entrance of the venue and she looked absolutely fine. The staff also told other patrons in their holding pen that we were being a nuisance and so we had a couple patrons come up to us suggesting we should just leave despite not knowing the circumstances at all.I could go on for several more paragraphs with more detail but this is probably enough to get a good idea of the sort of venue this is. It was an okay venue up until this happened. At least 2, probably 3, of the door staff should be sacked immediately.

Came here with a friend as we fancied a bit of a boogie and this was closest to where we were currently drinking. The music was really good on both levels but the place was quite empty but I think that is just a sign of the times unfortunately plus it was so hot! They need to sort the air con out especially if people are dancing. The drinks come in pretty cool plastic white containers and if you spill it don't worry a cleaner will be hot on your heels to mop it up! What I did find a bit random though is that there was a plug in air freshener in a socket by the dance floor, which was a tad overpowering!

We arrived to the club (we had pre-paid) and where told the hen was too drunk, but if we waited in an outside pen for 20 minutes they would let us in. She was not overly drunk and was walking and talking with ease. This refusal to let us in until we had waited 20 minted brought our evening to an end. None of us are from London and didn't know where else to go.

Attended as part of a hen package and definitely never to return. Although booked in advance unhelpful door staff unwilling initially to accept our group, causing a great deal of stress for those organising. We were finally escorted to our 'VIPs booth' which would probably comfortably seat 8- but there were 16 of us. Then a woman in a coat proceeded to our 3 glasses of cheap fizz from a bottle we then had to share with the rest of the group (this one bottle supposedly part of the 'vip' package) But it gets worse. 3 of us decided to go for a giant cocktail. We waited more than 20 mins to get served and then watched the bar person make up the drink - without actually putting any vodka in- the chief component. We challenged her but she swore blind she put it in. We asked her to show us the bottle- and she couldn't find it- still sweating she had put it in. £20 for an alcohol free drink. Other members of our part had to wait more than 30mins after ordering their drink. For a club you would expect dancing- try to find a dance floor- the new hen night game.Hen - if booking a package avoid this bar\club!

Unfortunately the door staff ruin what is a nice bar. They are rude and abusive and have no sense of the real world and how to treat people. A lot of the people who go there are nice decent people but the treatment by the door staff is a joke. Maybe they are all in s bad mood as they are stuck on the door while all the decent people inside are enjoying their self that is until the thug like door staff turn up. Disgrace.

Unfortunately this bar has a very rude security lady. I arrived and my bag was searched - normal except the lady doing the search looked very moody and not at all friendly. The security lady took my bottle of water and when I explained that it was only water she just said 'you can't prove that'. When I was ready to leave an hour later I asked politely on the way out if I could have my bottle of water back. She just said 'no its all thrown away'. This would all have been fine if it was done with a smile, a please and a thank you. Instead it was done with a scowl and no manners at all! That's not how I would treat anyone let alone a customer! I was shocked that someone with so little manners is allowed to be the face of this bar.

Rating is probably harsh as the bar is not aimed at people like me. It reminds of a nineties bar in a rural town in the home counties. I imagine great fun if you're trashed in a large group. Rude & abusive bouncers on the night I went, who excluded my dinner guest. The management clearly don't want middle-aged, well-behaved company directors on the premises. I was meeting a friend for drinks & dinner at 6:30pm, and when he arrived the doorman was v rude and highly aggressive: "you're laughing at me" and grabbed him. And they throw you out…like this…without any specific reason...a guy escort you out because you are “too drunk”…you get the chance to go to pee only because you ask for it, you hope he will forget about you but then you are unexpectedly out!! It doesn’t matter if you ask why…the guy want you to go out…and you politely go out, saying that you want to stay with your friends, asking “why am I going to be thrown out”…but you are out, there is no why and because, you are out, without any reasons and without any discussions, you are out and that’s the end of the night: 2:00 AM on a Tuesday night, not bad, yes, but the ticket was paid in advance and it is the Spring Ball Night…where is the communication? Where is the occasion to have a civil discussion? Where is the power of gathering people together? And meet and know each other, have fun and enjoy themselves?!?

Arrived at 6.30pm on Monday night for an evening to catch up with friends before one leaves to live in the States. The reason for choosing Opal was because we used to have parties there all the time even back when it was Motion Bar, so to reminsce a bit.I arrived first straight from work and was stopped by the bouncer, 'Mate, where you off too?' to which i replied, I'm meeting friends for drinks... are they here yet?..... I don't know.... well you're not coming in. 'No entry to people on their own'Seriously???I then had to wait outside for 25 mins for friends to arrive, meanwhile the bouncer had approached me and said he'd spoke to the manager and if I wanted to come in for a beer it was ok. What a load of nonsense!Needless to say once friends arrived we went elsewhere and now there will be no reminiscing in the future as there are much friendlier and better places to have good times with mates. Avoid and head to Gordons round the corner or many other places that would welcome your money.

Over the years I've visited Opal on a number of occasions and have always had a good night. It might not be one of the classiest venues, but is conveniently located next to Embankment tube station. The door staff observe a sensible policy around admission and the music is good dancing music with something for everyone. There is always a good mix of people there and generally everyone is there to have fun. It's worth getting there early to indulge in happy hour (17:00 - 20:00) and then you'll be set to boogie the night away till the wee hours!

Dear all,On the evening of the 23rd of February me and a few friends visited Opal Bar for the opening Sintillate night. Expected a decent night however soon realised otherwise. On arrival we ordered a few drinks and much to our dismay the barwoman didn't no what a jagerbomb was. In regards to this, working in a high profile club in London I would imagine this is basic product knowledge? Furthermore to this, we wasn't only having to explain our drink of choice we was then served the wrong drink and the barwoman demanded we paid. Utter shambles really...The music was poor and I consider it in no way reflective of Sintillate. The venue was dated and lacking, overall thoroughly disappointed.Should we visit again I hope these points will be eridacted.
