As the only pub in Loxwood, with a traditional 'pub' feel, including open fire, family and pet friendly, an enormous 'plus' is the restaurant which specializes in 'smokehouse' meats. This was our second visit to the Onslow since its rebranding and the quality of the fare and experience as a whole was consistent. This has now become our 'go to' pub/restaurant of choice. Long may they continue.

Lovely pub went with family. Staff and service very friendly and responsive. Roast beef was delicious , one of the best I've ever had. Portions are generous, felt guilty with wastage ! If you haven't been for Sunday lunch then you've been missing out !

Christmas lunch for a group of 18. The food and service were was superb. You won’t go hungry, that’s for sure. The meals were large and they even gave us doggy bags for the excess meat. If you like hot and spicy, try the chicken wings with the hot ba**ard sauce. Delicious and lip tingling.

From the outside the Onslow looks a bit scruffy and run down but once inside it is very pleasant. Our Sunday lunches were a bit of a letdown. The smoked duck was excellent but barely warm vegetables and mediocre roast potatoes were a big disappointment. The staff were very chirpy and obliging.

This is a great place for walking, talking, eating and drinking. It is about an hour and a half for us to drive to but it’s the perfect place for us to meet friends in the middle and is so worth it. Beautiful setting, staff attentive despite being busy. We were surprised at the food choices on the menu as there was a lack of the regular choices BUT a large variety of burgers. Sadly, we weren't given the lunch menu that can be seen on their website. We ordered starters and mains and although the food was well cooked and tasty, they put their saucy cow burger mayonnaise on the dishes. Whilst I'm not averse to the sauce it has a strong, smokey flavour which I considered overpowered the many lovely flavours. Whilst we felt looked after and all questions answered by the waiting staff, we would return for the scenery but not the food.

Had driven past this pub many times and thought must drop in. Today drove to it for lunch. Great location right next to the canal. Good selection of Badgers Beers. Very friendly bar staff. The beer garden is fantastic right along side the canal. We both ordered a light snack lunch. My wife ordered mackerel pate, dill pickels & toasted Baguette, £8. I had Ciabatta Sandwich , Prawn Morie rose and lettuce £10. My wifes arrived with I think a ciabatta cut in half with a thin layer of pate already spread on it. Whatever the bread was it was not toasted. Mine was the same type of bread with, being generous, a quarter of an inch of the smallest prawns I have ever seen. Such a shame. No staff came to ask how it was which is usually done today. If you just want a drink in a lovely location with great beers and fab. staff, this is a real find, but unless we were unlucky, don't bother with the food.

Customer service at its lowest. Ordered a burger yesterday, took it back to be well done. I’m only assuming he’s manager but his customer service and politeness was shocking, started arguing with me and my partner as to why it was pink in the middle. Came out to show me that burger isn’t not cooked. Proceeded to touch the food with his hands which I asked for a new one. Brought a new one out and made me cut it infront of him to prove it’s the ‘quality of the burger’. He was not listening to us one bit. Very rude and quite condescending. Will never come back here again.

We tried to order on the website/app but this did not work so we had to go in. We had booked a table, but we were just told to sit anywhere even though tables were clearly reserved. Nice enough. Pub feels tired. Menu pretty underwhelming and burger and chips definitely overpriced at £16 for what you get. Pretty small compared to other places and very lonely presented with nothing else on a plate. Tasty but let down by hot patty (good thing) with very cold lettuce etc which i think had probably come out of the fridge (bad thing - room tempetature would have been better. At first I thought the patty hadnt been properly cooked until I realised what was cold in the burger). I think I was charged a service charge when I made the order myself at the bar and paid upfront, wasnt checking closely enough. Total bill £42 for 1 x burger and chips (£16) 1 x ribs and chips (£18), 1 x pint orange and lemonade and 1 x pint tap water...

We had a family Sunday lunch here and although the table for 11 was booked and food order was emailed to the pub during the week in advance we had to wait over an hour for the table and the food to arrive. The food arrived in dribs and drabs meaning the food was getting cold to those served 1st, who couldn't start eating because the sides and vegetables hadn't arrived. I had the mega roast and the rare red meat was tough to cut and chew with my ageing teeth, had I known the meat was rare as standard I would have asked for medium to well done. I had an upset stomach later that evening and I wonder if that could have caused it, the others who had the same meal didn't have an upset stomach. The smoked half chicken was very peppery and not expected or to the taste of some, for a Sunday roast, consisting of two legs, no brest meat as half a chicken portion would normally be. The staff kept us informed about the delay to be honest and we understood that they were busy.

Astonishingly shocking evening at The Red Lion. For a pub that markets itself as 'family and pet friendly to the extreme' it is anything but. Avoid avoid avoid. Having arrived after an afternoon of unanticipated delays we had a hungry toddler and a hungry dog. Booking this pub on the basis of this very bold statement, front and centre on its website, I expected to be onto a winner. Upon arrival, the children's menu consisted of two meal options neither of which particularly nutritious we opted for a smaller portion of an adult's dish. However, when my son asked for a child's meal because he has less of an appetite, he wasn't allowed and had to order an adult dish. We asked if the kitchen could possibly slice an extra piece of ham or cook off a sausage or chicken breast to tide the pup over (chargable of course) but was told it wouldn't be possible. Another man then came to the table to say the same with frankly rude, patronising comments such as "we expect dog owners to feed their dogs at home" despite having explained the circumstances. We then asked to order another main meal (at full cost) that they could hold back the extras on basically so the pup could have the meat and were refused. His explanation was simply idiotic, we were offering to pay full menu price for either a burger patty or slices of ham! That aside, the tone taken was shocking. And for a pub that professes to be dog friendly to the extreme, I am afraid having a few stale dog biscuits on the bar doesn't quite cut it. The meal we had was mediocre, the service very slow and the most enjoyed part was the sticky toffee pudding and crumble for dessert. Avoid this pub at all costs if you are a family and there are actual, real dog friendly pubs around that even have a little doggy menu...maybe do some market research Red Lion and see what 'dog friendly to the extreme' really means. The man that was serving shouldn't be anywhere near customers, he's single handedly put us off for good and we will be spreading the word.

Top quality food. Ambitious menu. Worth my drive 30 miles for special occasion meal. Run by husband and wife team that own the premises so do have to pay rent for expensive town accomodation or to employ a star chef. Therefore prices very reasonable for quality delivered. Restaurant out of town near A27 so no country views. But not aware of traffic once inside. Also easy parking in restaurant garden so no access problems.
