Ong Gie in Edinburgh, City of

What an experience! Would highly recommended for an explosion of amazing flavours. We allowed the waiters to recommend some favourite dishes and this definitely helped us get the full experience. The waiting staff kindly offered to assist us with the bbq to ensure it was cooked perfectly. Can’t wait to go back. 👌🏻

I went here in November of 2024, the service was really great! The waiters were kind and attentive without being overbearing. (They had a button to summon system) The vibe in the restaurant was good, the restaurant is on the smaller side but they utilise space quite well as I didn’t feel cramped when I was eating. The toilet was also spacious and clean! (Though there is only one and it is not step free) Finally the food… it was GREAT, the portions were decent for the price but I do think that rice should come with the meat dishes as you had to order separately (just my personal preference) I ordered the jajangmyeon and the kimchi pork with mixed kimchi sides and I was stuffed by the end, the jajangmyeon was on the sweeter side and could have come with radish to cut through the sweetness but I was thoroughly satisfied with both the pork and the noodles. The pork was my favourite!! It was spicy but not overbearing, well balanced and tender. (you can just the spice level upon request) Overall I reccoment this restaurant, I would eat there again and plan to to try their KBBQ!

On 7th November, I visited this restaurant for lunch After a long time. Staffs were always very kind. All foods were very good as usual. It's Choi Gop. You can warm up your body with Korean food in cold weather.

It was our first time trying Korean food and it didn't dissapoint. Food was amazing, very tasty. The staff was lovely, they gave us some recommendations as we didn't know what to choose. My husband told me like 3 times to come back again soon, and we will do that for sure. Highly recommended!

I went there with my mom in September and suddenly I miss the taste of this Jjamppong, so I'm writing a review after looking at the pictures. If I remember this taste in Korea, I think I've said it all. I also ordered Dolsot Bibimbap, which was just mediocre (actually, it tasted like Jjamppong). It was so delicious that I couldn’t even eat it properly. I’m sorry) Wow, the Jjamppong is really… Before that, every time I came to Edinburgh, I didn't go because it was a bit difficult to get around, but it felt like I wanted to slap my past self on the back. That day, my flight was tight, so I had to eat and leave really quickly (I couldn't even take a proper picture because I was in a hurry), but I was almost late while eating the soup. I did it. The owner is also very kind. I asked him to order and pay quickly as I was in a hurry, but he said he ate everything too quickly, so he was a little surprised, but he served me warmly. I really want to go to Edinburgh again to eat this. Really🥹

I find this strange but I had very good Italian food and korean food in Edinburgh and this is the korean restaurant I went. Very nice korean owner serving authentic korean food. You must order kimchi which is freshly made in-house. I had korean bbq and the only slight let down was the electric cooking stove which is not strong enough compared to gas stove.

Fantastic place. Amazing food, and really friendly staff. You can grill food by yourself, but if you have any trouble kitchen chef will help. You can also order food already prepared in the kitchen, if you don't want to do it by yourself. But hey, that's all the fun about it, right?

Very over priced on the bbq sets. I paid £43 for a beef set which was all pretty low quality cheap beef and only just enough for one person and it only comes with lettuce leafs. For that kind of money I would expect it to be a complete meal with rice or noodles. On the other hand my partner had a beef noodle dish which was very nice and much less expensive(a lot more filling too). Service was good just don’t waste your money on the bbq gimmick.

BBQ meat very over priced, had the beef set for £43 the meat wasn’t great quality and was very bland, barely enough for one person! Normal dishes seem great. Staff very friendly and attentive. Could of been so much better

It's absolutely delicious. Osam bulgogi, stone pot bibimbap. I recommend the half and half chicken. Not only the owner but also the staff are very friendly. Advance reservation is required. Otherwise there would be no space!

It's the best Korean restaurant I've visited in the UK! It's much more delicious than famous Korean restaurants in London. Two people ordered and ate 3 dishes. Edinburgh was the best travel destination of my life, and the food was this delicious... Please keep it going until I come again :)

I had to order Takeaway because I was with my friend who had Covid. I explained to them that I wanted some thing they don’t usually allow as take away, but because my friend had Covid, we wanted to order out and eat it in our place, which was just around the corner. My friend waited outside. I found them to be wonderful people. They were friendly, helpful, and sympathetic about my friend having Covid. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Treated horribly. They made me wait outside in the cold for my food. I went to the restaurant to get a take-away meal and was told that I had to order off on-line menu, which has many fewer options. That was bad enough. When I asked to expedite order bcz I have gotten COVID in Scotland where NO ONE takes precautions, I was ordered outside to wait. I was wearing KN95 mask and keeping my distance from other customers. The waitress was kind, but that did not make up for the behavior of the person in charge. Don’t go to this restaurant!

Food is pretty decent. The only downside is no kimchi as banchan and you have to pay £5 for that.

Walked in for dinner and was lucky enough to be given a table last minute! From the second we sat down to leaving the service was impeccable. The food was absolutely fantastic and came out quick and hot. The staff were brilliant and friendly and we were treated so well. We asked about one of the traditional shots and the person (we assume owner) was so friendly to go through it with us. So so worth it and highly recommend to anyone in the area! We got a mix of meat and veg dishes and were impressed at the standard

I used to order takeaway from this restaurant a while back and often ordered the chicken pieces with sweet soy dressing, which were always excellent. Although usually only getting five pieces, they were decently sized and very tasty. After ordering this month, the same order came with the tiniest pieces of chicken, still good but nowhere near the amount before. Disappointing.

Best Korean restaurant in Edinburgh Definitely go~~ It’s really delicious!!!

I found the portion sizes at this Korean restaurant to be much smaller compared to other places I've tried. The flavors were also quite mild, making the overall experience feel like poor value for money. I wouldn't really recommend it. Compared to Kims in Edinburgh, the taste here is much less vibrant, and the portions are even smaller.

I ate Korean spicy seafood ramen "Champon". The taste of the sea spread throughout my mouth and I was so happy! I also tried fried chicken and bulgogi, and they were all first-class! !

I had kimchi stew and it tasted like I was in Korea. It was so delicious. The delicate apron service was also great to prevent food from spilling on the travelers’ clothes. ^^

I had never done Korean bbq before and was in the city to meet with a friend. Although he had never done Korean bbq either he decided to go with my suggestion. When we looked at Korean bbq places in town we found this place and decided to head there tonight. The staff was incredibly kind in showing us how everything works and giving tips on the best way to eat the different parts of the meal. They were incredibly accommodating. The food was incredible, some of the best I have ever had. Going here really made my evening.

We were in search of a South Korean restaurant while in Edinburgh and found Ong Gie. Everything we ordered was delicious. The service was also of high quality and the food came very quickly. Would definitely recommend!

The best restaurant in Edinburgh. Amazing staff and food. I suggest the garlic chicken as it is my favourite. Portions are big and everything I tried in the menu is excellent. I can only recommend this restaurant.

The employees and the owner were all very friendly and the food was delicious, it was great! When I went there, all the people working were Korean, so it was great to chat with them! For the menu, I highly recommend Jjambbong!! The beef stew is also delicious ㅠㅠ❤️ I will come again next time I come to Edinburgh!! Have a prosperous business😆

I had my last meal on my trip to England at this restaurant that I happened to visit. The ssamjang sauce served with the beef set makes the meat more tender and flavorful. Even my 7-year-old liked the bean sprouts provided as standard, so he ate them 3 more times. I wanted to make it in Korea too. It was a good ending to the day to see the friendly and sincere conversation with the guests. If I were to go to Highland, I wanted to eat here and stock up on nutrition.

Very nice Korean food. The waiting staff were really kind and helpful answering our questions and the food was delivered quickly and with nice suggestions on the best way to enjoy it. The interior is ok and they have hobs set in the tables for some of the dishes. I recommend the bibimbap. The spice rating is very much accurate too!

I was depressed(?) from traveling alone, and after eating tasteless and expensive local food, I cheered up by eating a bowl of kimchi stew here. All Korean restaurants are good, but Onggi's food, service, and atmosphere are enough to get full marks.

Great food, great service and the owner is a genuinely nice guy. After our dinner for 2 we've booked it for 10 people for a birthday.

The service at this place is excellent, and the owner is very kind. They initially got our beef bone soup order wrong, but they compensated with some extra side dishes. The bento box is also very delicious.

Both the food and service were great! I had Jjamppong, stir-fried pork, Kkanpunggi, and soft tofu, and they were all very delicious. In particular, the Jjamppong Kkanpunggi was as delicious as eating it at a Korean restaurant! The owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming :) I’m leaving a review because I hope there are more good Korean restaurants abroad like this! Recommended if you come to Edinburgh! 👍👍

I ordered delivery and ate it, and I was impressed by the quantity and taste of the food. I was surprised that the beef stew was spicy and the samgyetang had a whole chicken in it. I really enjoyed all the menu items. Thank you 🙇🏻‍♀️

Absolutely recommended! I haven’t tried any other Korean restaurant in Edinburgh (I live in Paris and was in town for a few days) but I can tell you it’s the best Korean meal I had in Europe :) the service was lovely too.

I couldn't find a ramen restaurant let alone Korean food in France, so I came over to Edinburgh and ate it, and it was delicious!!! I asked for it to be spicy and it was cooked deliciously 🥹 The owner and staff are also very friendly!!

This is a restaurant with authentic Korean food. The staff and owner are all Korean, and the food is really good! I think it would have been known as a delicious restaurant even if it were in Korea. It’s been a while since I ate authentic Korean food, so I’m so happy. Three people ordered different menus and they were all delicious! Highly recommended

This was a great restaurant! Very friendly and attentive staff who brought food out quickly and also gave us an apron to keep our clothes from getting dirty. All in all, great food and even better environment! All of our food met, if not exceeded, our expectations.

This is a place I visit every time I travel to Scotland with my mom! All the food, including jjamppong, is the best. Even my mom thinks the jjambbong here is the best! The owner is also very kind. 😊

From reservation to visit to meal, it was great! The staff are very friendly and I asked the owner for a whiskey recommendation, and he recommended one that suited our needs, so I ended up taking a good whiskey with him haha❤️ If anyone goes to Edinburgh, I definitely recommend Onggi Korean Restaurant!! The stir-fried pork and jjamppong were all delicious!!

The taste of the food was so fantastic.😊 In particular, most Korean restaurants in the UK are run by Chinese people, but the Korean restaurant here is run and served by Koreans, so it's even better, also the taste is even better than Korean food in Korea, and it tastes like it deserves to be featured on Michelin. If you like Korean food, this is a highly recommended Korean restaurant by Korean himself.😎 In my opinion: squid pork(Osam bulgogi) is the best. It was so delicious that I think it's the number one Korean restaurant in the UK that I have to go to as a Korean, and the staff was very friendly. I think the service of chocolate and medicine at the end is what makes me come back again. I almost cried after eating Osam Bulgogi, it was so delicious~ I didn't have any battery on my phone, but the staff even lent me a spare battery. Thank you so much!

Read good previous reviews and decided to order through delivery. Ordered Bimbimbap, fried chicken, soondubu and kimchi. Food was delivered very timely. Didn't disappoint, excellent authentic taste.

The third time to eat Ong Gie Whether it's Korean BBQ, tofu hotpot, fried chicken or military hotpot, they are all delicious and highly recommended! The store staff are also very nice and enthusiastic ~

We went to Ong Gie in May 2024 for our anniversary. It was a great experience as we had never had Korean barbecue before. The food was delicious, great variety to choose from and the staff were very helpful in explaining how the barbecue works and recommending the best way to cook and serve the food. We had the mixed meat platter and garlic fried chicken and both were amazing! Definitely an experience worth a try!

I went there because I wanted to eat Korean food while traveling. Three people (2 adults and 1 child) ordered kimchi stew, soybean paste stew, and pork kimchi stew and enjoyed it. :) The food is delicious, especially the braised pork kimchi. It's spicy and contains glass noodles, so it's super delicious. I didn't take a picture because I was eating, but after we finished eating, my husband brought some chicken to eat with beer at the hotel. Yum yum, I enjoyed it. ~ Thank you for providing snacks for my child.

I found the best Korean restaurant in Europe last night. I am Korean American and travel extensively for my job and holidays, and I have been to many countries over 40 years, but I started not going to a Korean restaurant as most of Korean restaurants were disappointing. However, I got cold during Edinburgh trip, and I had to eat some Korean food. So I googled korean restaurant near me(I was staying at Waldorf Astoria hotel), the closest one was this restaurant so i went not expecting good food, and I was in total shock! The food was so tasty and the staff were so friendly and nice. Then they even offered me cold medicine. I almost cried. I strongly suggest this restaurant to all the people who live in Edinburgh and any travelers who travel this area. I am putting up cold medicine they offered me here as it helped me, but I think their wonderful food helped me to get rid of my cold.

If you’re craving for korean food in Edinburgh, this is the place to go. Food was legit and the staff were super friendly. My family and i had kimchi stew, samgyetang, tteokbokki and kimchi pancake - everything was delicious :)

This restaurant is highly recommended! Their fried chicken range tastes great and the meat and salads are of good quality. The attitude of the waiters is very good and they are always concerned about the needs of the guests.

I was tired because I took the night train and got off in Edinburgh at dawn. The kids were having a hard time, so we looked for a Korean restaurant, but there weren't many restaurants open on Mondays, so we only found it. When the children said they were cold, give them warm water. The food also tastes great, Plus, it's very hygienic. I think this is the perfect restaurant!! May you prosper!!
