Olivier At The Chequers in South Oxfordshire

Beautiful food and excellent service. This is my fifth time eating at Oliver’s. Perhaps one day I shall choose a starter other than the absolutely delicious sweetbreads! The food today was awesome. It’s always great but today all four of us had faultless meals.

If you want an amazing culinary experience this is the place to come. The menu is creative and mouthwateringly exciting. You always know when you are about to enjoy a special experience when you look at the menu and you cannot decide what to choose, as there are at least three starters and mains you would pick anytime. If thats not enough the server brings you 'the specials' so its back to square one! To relieve the tension we devoured 'pigshead croquettes' which were very tasty. The service here is excellent and attentive but not overbearing. You feel like a valued customer from the moment you arrive. Having finally decided on your order, what follows will not disappoint! We were a party of three and we all made different picks. My Black pawn tempura followed by escalope of venison and to finish treacle pudding with vanilla sauce, were all deliciously fresh and tasty. My fellow diners were equally blown away with their choices and agreed we must return soon. Enjoy.

We went to The Chequers at Aston Tirrold for early evening drinks. As this pub historically was our local village pub! We were not made to feel welcome at all, in fact the staff were damn right rude. The policy of the people running the on now seems to be if your not spending a fortune on food, Then they do not want you there. Locals are not made to feel welcome even though when the pub re opened it was said that locals would be welcome to come and spend afternoons/evenings just to have drinks. For example the 6 o’clock club, whom have been meeting every Saturday for many years. Also we have also recently heard that even the village cricket club is not welcome on the Summer weekends either!! Whom have been doing so for a very long time indeed. It’s a disgrace and these people managing the pub should be ashamed of themselves!!!

Set menu excellent value for money. Caesar salad with halloumi, Moroccan main and panna cotta with raspberry coulis, blackcurrant sorbet and shortbread. 2 courses £20, 3 £25. Very generous portions for a set menu (which I’m told changes weekly

It was our first time and we have alredy booked again! It was my birthday - perfect celebration - excellent food and wine, attentive service, beautiful decor - even the car park was well cared for, with beautifully trained roses!

Don’t know how a set lunch, which doesn’t look so outstanding in print, gets to taste so entirely exceptional. Salade Nicoise was a revelation, but then so was the rest. Service was attentive and friendly. This is a lovely place with really special food. Can’t understand how anyone could write a negative review. Absolutely our favourite place for lunch.

Food is very good. The choice is excellent and on a Sunday you didn't have to have a roast, although they do offer one and one of our party had it and it was excellent. Lovely outside and when our summer eventually arrives this is where I would sit. Staff very attentive and friendly. Definitely will be coming back and highly recommend it. One of the best in the area.

I booked a table here for my partner’s birthday after seeing multiple good reviews online. I informed them that it was the day of my partner’s birthday, in the hopes that they would make us feel extra special. However, from the minute we walked in we felt unwelcome. The staff made no effort for the special occasion and were standoffish. The food was also a disappointment, ‘french’ fries were bendy and soggy, steak was well overdone to the point that I didn’t want to eat it, and pasta nothing special. We have had better food at mcdonalds. Safe to say we will not be recommending this place to anyone else and do not know what the fuss is about.

NEW SET LUNCH £20!! What a bargain, set lunch (no choices but who cares) £20 for two courses and £26 for three. I actually went to have the a la carte with a guest, but the set menu was different and appealing so tried it. Absolutely brilliant, what a steal. If I wasn't already rather overweight I would have lunch here once a week every week. Apparently available weds/thurs and even fri lunch. Go for it. The quality is every bit as good as the a la carte so you do not sacrifice quality. Indeed I went back with my nephew two weeks later and the set month main was a special (and much liked by him).

A very good meal and efficient service. Worth return visits. As this review is written some weeks after our visit I have forgotten what we ate. All I recollect is that all 4 of us had dishes we enjoyed.

We have been planning to visit Oliver’s since opening and managed to have a cheeky lunch mid week. Although the lunch specials looked nice we decided to have the from the main menu. Fish soup and sweet breads for starters - yummy Wild duck and pork belly for mains and a shared chocolate delice to finish. All amazing and tasty. Highly recommend.

I wanted to try everything on the menu! The food we had was fantastic and we will be definitely going back. The muntjac saddle was the best venison I've ever tasted.

This is the first visit to Olivier's since he's been back at The Chequers and, overall, we had a great evening. The food was excellent, there was a good selection of wine, the atmosphere was vibrant and the decor was smart. The only niggle was the service. The person who seemed to be responsible for our table was brusque to the point of rudeness, forgot to bring the drinks we ordered, banged our food down on the table in front of us (reaching across one person to slap it down in front of the person it was intended for) and didn't bring the ancillary dishes for the fish soup and offered no explanation of why they hadn't arrived. I would say, though, that the young girl who was also serving was completely charming, quickly remedied the deficits and smiled throughout, so to some extent redeemed our opinion of the service.

One of the best meals I've had out in years. Good food, nice wine choices and excellent service. I will be back! I love seafood and fish and their fish soup followed by fish of the day were beautifully served and lovely quality.

Fantastic birthday dinner at this great restaurant. The menu is interesting, the food excellent, the wine list carefully thought through. Really good attention to detail and unpretentious but skilled staff. Good work Olivier!

After using regular meeting point of Beetle and Wedge for years - and not being that impressed last couple of visits - thought we would try somewhere different. Went to this venue about 10 years ago and enjoyed but knew it had changed hands couple of times. What can I say - it’s been renovated beautifully, staff excellent and lovely and food just stunning . Full of flavour - ample portions (not huge - so not overfaced) . Interesting menu and lots of specials

Reprise: still a gem. Now getting into his stride the menu has a few new items. I had the duck with wild mushrooms, which was excellent and will go on my pick list for sure. Its so nice to have a local pub-restaurant of this quality when there are none in the wider area, those that exist are pedestrian.

The best meal we’ve had in this area for many many years. It’s a French style restaurant, serving unpretentious and elegant food in a lovely recently refurbished pub. They use excellent ingredients and the cooking is perfect. We will definitely be back!

Lovely atmosphere. Staff is very welcoming and polite. Menu selection is well though out and not overly complex. Food quality and taste was fabulous. This is a hidden gem in the region. Was on business trip in the are. If you stay around in the general area, please give them a visit. There is an outside terrace for more fresh air. Wine selection is amazing, sadly couldnt sample it due to driving. Absolutely would recommend and will come again if I’m in the area again

This restaurant deserves to be much better known. We were recommended to it by a local friend and it far exceeded our expectations. Beautifully cooked interesting food and a great wine list

Fantastic quality meal at Olivier@The Chequers at Aston Tirrold. Nice mix of modern interior in a traditional pub building with a great outdoor space as well. 100% recommended for that special occasion. Great service, very friendly and went the extra mile to make the evening memorable. ☆☆☆☆☆

As a large family group, with six young children, we had a great time. Afterwards the 8 year old said ‘that was delicious’ and he spoke for all of us. As ever Olivier’s food is consistently superlative, whatever we choose from the menu. Mussels, prawns, steak, fish ….. everything. Top flavour combinations and presentation without unnecessary pretension or fussiness - just special and highly enjoyable food. Friendly and efficient service. The refurbishment gives a smart, airy look, without effacing the old pub, and the covered terrace and playhouse outside were much liked. This is a wonderful place, so much improved, and we can’t wait to return.

We played at Olivier at The Chequers for Wendy's birthday party and had a brillian night! The venue is beautiful and the staff are all really friendly and helpful. We did a disco at the start of the night and a silent disco at the end. We had a blast!

It was my 80th birthday and the only place i wanted to go was Oliviers. The food is excellent and if you have not tried this restaurant you should as you will return again and again as we do. Starter Black tempura prawns - Sweetbreads Mains Muntjac - Rack of ribs. Triple cooked chips. it was superb. Good bottle of wine too. DO TRY THIS RESTAURANT. We travelled an hour to get to restaurant and well worth it.

I will never tire of Olivier’s food. The secret of success is being able to repeat it. There is no question the quality and consistency can be repeated. Since my last review and subsequent 3 visit, I can find nothing to fault.

Lovely pub atmosphere, excellent food, charming staff and good real ale. Most enjoyable. Looking forward to visiting again!
