Olivias Coffee House in Sunderland

Great food, coffee and location. Wonderful China and the bacon butty’s are to die for. You can view the green from your table and experience the ambiance of the village.

This little place is lovely in a pretty old fashioned village. The staff are all lovely, food is very reasonably priced. Now you can take your dogs as they have outdoor seating and tables as well as water provided for dogs in good weather. Opening times are 10am-4pm Mon-Sat, 10am-2pm Sun. I suggest you make a note of the opening and closing times, you may find you get a drink the next time you go.

We decided to give this place another try, as the tea room opposite on the village green was absolutely packed. It was 2.45 pm when we went; duly scanned the QR code, sanitised our hands, poked our noses through the door, to be told, "sorry we have had to close early today." In the immortal words of Victor Meldrew, "I don't believe it." Been there twice and same response both times. No wonder the tea room opposite was packed. I really don't know why this place bothers. Once again the door was open and the lights on. If you are closed, shut the door and lock it. Once bitten, twice, never again. They don't deserve the business.

I had a fantastic afternoon tea for two delivered on the 10th Feb for my husbands 50th birthday from Olivias and it was faultless. They still delivered even in a snow storm and the food was absolutely delicious, I cannot recommend Olivias highly enough. Perfect split between sweet and savoury, it took us 2 days to finish it.

Wow just Wow! An expected delivery organised by our daughter was such an amazing surprise. Added to that the sandwiches, scones and cakes were divine. Olivia’s is walking distance from our house and we will be back to popping in as soon as it is safe to do so once lockdown is done with. Gasping for a drink, we thought we would give Olivia's a try and support local businesses in the community. Called at 3.15 pm on Wednesday, only to be told that they were closed. The door was open and all the lights were on, so it certainly looked open. What is it with tea shops? None of them appear to like working. I wasn't impressed with the steep disabled ramp, taking up the whole of the entrance. Whilst the intentions are clearly good, the severity of it would require some serious muscle power, either on the chair user or whoever was pushing. I didn't have my chair and would have found the slope difficult to walk up. Considering the nearest safe parking is some distance away, it does seem to defeat the object of catering for the disabled and becomes more of a lip service to the cause.

We visited recently on a Saturday afternoon, before our visit I contacted Olivia's on Facebook asking whether they recommend booking a table in advance and they did, stating Saturday afternoons can be busy and I'm glad we did - great communication initially. When we visited we received a warm, friendly welcome and shown to our reserved table. The cafe is nice and cosy with a lovely view of the pretty village green. A great location. We had lunch and some coffees - the menu was offered a fine selection of options and the quality of food was excellent, great value for money too. I'm so pleased we found Olivias, it's almost like a hidden gem - we will definitely return and I have recommended them to friends and colleagues alike.

Called here today with my daughter we had bacon egg and mushroom sandwich it was absolutely delicious all cooked with fry light so it was healthy and a skinny latte the staff were friendly and helpful we were served quickly a little gem of a place

Both of the people meeting here found it hard to spot, possibly because it's set on an angle to the road, and its pebble dashed side wall makes you assume it's a public loo. If you struggle as we did, stand in front of the Celtic cross with the church behind you and it's over the road. We visited on an insanely hot afternoon which did the place no favours, as it's kitted out with heavy soft furnishings on every seat which retained a huge amount of heat. But the lady behind the counter was really friendly, the tea was strong with a good size cup, not the usual tea shop thimble, and fancy getting extra grated cheese with our cheese scones. The loo had been left in a right state by some foul individual and was immaculately cleaned as soon as the staff became aware of the issue. In 32 degree heat that cannot have been fun, but the lady's good humour never wavered. She's a credit to the place.

Been here numerous times and always been good. Plenty choice and a great place ifyou have toddlers in tow.

Took out for lunch with my daughter and granddaughter. Granddaughter had the LOL afternoon tea and it was fantastic and adults had toasties and panini,s lovely food and coffee. My first visit but it will not be my last

Made a reservation for my family of 16 for breakfast on sunday morning.Food was fantastic,staff were fantastic too.Nothing was to much trouble,would like to say a big thank you and would recommend a visit to Olivias.

I contacted the coffee shop via Facebook messenger about availability and they promptly got back to me and a booking was made! My 8 yr daughter loves LOL dolls so an LOL afternoon tea seemed perfect and it was! Including the LOL sandwiches! Included was face painting and potion making which my daughter absolutely loved! The food was delicious- we both enjoyed, infact we couldn’t finish either afternoon tea. The adults had 3 deep filled sandwiches- Tuna, cheese savoury & egg mayonnaise + an extra LOL themed ham sandwich ! The deserts were delicious but just too filling for me! The cheesecake was gorgeous, the brownies yummy & the scone delicious. While waiting my daughter had an LOL colouring sheet to colour with crayons on the table. She was thrilled with her ‘magic’ drink! Her shimming juice! It cost £19.80 in total for the 2 of us, would highly recommend and definitely return. Daughter still talking about it!

A lovely dainty coffee house with wonderful service, drinks & light food, from hot & cold sandwiches, cooked breakfasts, salads & soups to scones & a nice range of cakes. Homemade food that looks & tastes great. Prompt service, reasonable prices & a very refreshing attention to detail. We'll be going back & would recommend them to anyone in the area.

I've just returned from here after going for Mother's Day afternoon tea.

My husband and I went for after noon tea today. We received a voucher off my daughter and her husband for Christmas. We decided to keep it till now. Reason we did this was our 43th wedding anniversary was today and this was the perfect time to use it. We had booked for 2 when we arrived the owner (I think) was very polite and helpful showing us to our table. She then asked if we required tea or coffee. My husband had tea and I had coffee. The cream tea arrived. 4 different kinds of sandwiches, 2 different kinds of scones. Cheese and fruit,the fruit ones had jam, cream and a strawberry on. Next their was 2 different kinds of cake. Plus before the tea and coffee arrived their was 2 glasses of orange juice. I will be telling everyone what a lovely place to go to.

Had a lovely breakfast here today. The huge teapot full of tea was greatly appreciated! The service was excellent and staff were really friendly.

Popped in for a coffee while waiting for the National Trust's Washington Old Hall to open and ended up having brunch. Really good bacon and egg sarnie,bagel with salmon and cream cheese and nice, hot coffee. Well done, Olivia!

First time at this little cafe, had harry potter afternoon tea with my son, daughter in law and grandaughter. Rachel and the other girl made us feel really welcome. Food was great and not a bad price. Would recommend.

Popped in for coffee with a friend but was greeted by a screeching party of kids all running about.

We honestly had the most amazing time today. We had the Harry Potter themed afternoon tea, and the food was delicious. The staff were so kind and helpful. We were made to feel welcomed as soon as we entered until we left. Would definitely recommend to anyone of any age!

I've been here on 2 separate occasions for lunch and afternoon tea. Its a cute little place inside, family friendly and the staff are pleasant. Although the menu is limited lunch was nice and very cheaply priced.

I've enjoyed a few panini's and cappuccino's in Olivias. Staff and owner are very friendly and food tasty but not a place I'd go for a meal as such. I'd recommend to anyone who has small children as they have a great play area to keep them occupied.

I have been coming here quite a lot for a while now and I can say the experience is always a pleasant one, with great service and a nice range of things on the menu, this is definitely a place I drop into when I'm in the local area.

We popped in today for a coffee and a sandwich. The owner was pleasant and helpful and the menu although not large was very good. We had Bacon and Egg Bagels which were very tasty and filling. The food was served promptly and although she was on her own and the place was busy we were made to feel a bit special.

Arrived cafe was really busy but table was made available and cleaned by helpful staff. High chair was offered. Food and drink order taken at table. Paninis were ordered and lattes they were all hit and tasted lovely. Apologies were made for delay however we hadn't notice as had been chatting we were given desserts on house which we weren't expecting but we're very grateful. Would highly recommend this cafe especially if you have young children. Will be back.

I came here with a mate to meet his family for lunch. They ordered a full English and were not disappointed. My toastie was nice and accompanied by a few Dorito crisps. It was ok, not exceptional, but at a good price why should there be any complaints.

Must rate as the dirtiest coffee shop in the north east. Tables dirty and floor even more so. Waitress not very pleasant either. Considering there are other coffee shops in close proximity it really isn't doing itself any favours. Filthy!!!!!!

Homely little cafe with excellent views over picturesque village green. There is a small childrens indoor play area tucked away to one side, which will be very welcome to some and is no disturbance to other visitors.

Good local café serving variety of options to suit all palates. Coffee was really excellent with a well filled sandwich.

Visited on Wednesday. We were given a very warm welcome. The lady who served us was called Cassandra. She couldn't do enough to help. She talked us through what they did, as our 4 year is diabetic. We also had a baby and apologised for the mess. She said not a problem and nothing was a bother. The food was excellent,and was also very clean. Would highly recommend this coffee shop. Very family friendly

I visited with a friend and our 3 kids for lunch. Simple, well priced menus, decent coffee, play area for the children, toilets fine. Ticked all the boxes; we'll be back.

We have just found out that Olivias coffee house now delivers on a Friday morning, so I ordered a full Monty it was hot on arrival presentation was great and food was fab we will be using this company on a regularly. thank you again

Had a jumbo breakfast delivered to work today and it was absolutely beautiful!! Couldn't have asked for a better breakfast for the price. Would definitely order from here again :)

The member of staff who served me today gives "Terrible service" 1st and last visit. A smile and a hello and goodbye isn't hard and is free. She shouldn't be working here.

Visited for the first time this week. Small but cosy and very comfortable with plenty of cushions. Only had coffee, but was really nice, with large cups. Service was excellent with a nice welcome and friendly chat. The food looked good too - next time.

Visited with a friend and our daughters. What we had was really nice and the play area is great and the fact that the kids get a free biscuit with their drink was a nice touch .

Called in for a quick lunch, the place was filthy, every table full of uncleared crockery. We received an apology from staff who took our order then both studied their phones for a while. Our table was cleared but the table was not cleaned as they "had no wipes". The floor was awash with spilled food. The other tables were not cleared in the 45 minutes we were in there despite no other customers being present. Thirty minutes later a bowl of cold soup arrived with instructions for my partner to test it. Panini ok but served with what can only be described as an insipid salad of iceberg lettuce and sliced under ripe tomato with dribble of balsamic glaze. I would avoid unless you have small children as there is an indoor play area. The cakes looked ok but we didn't fancy sitting in the filthy place any longer than necessary.

Lovely position in the village overlooking the village green. Had coffee and cake and my little boy had the childrens package. Childrens small play area too

10 years ago this would have been an ideal place - small establishment ( be prepared to sit right on top of people) and a play area. My kids have long outgrown play areas so calling in for a coffee & chat here was a bit if a mistake. Ideal for anyone with toddlers.

Lovely setting in the heart of Washington old village. Nicely set out with a lovely little recess area for children to play with plenty of items to keep little ones amused. Decor very nice.

The visit was very average. Not much character. Just an average coffee shop. I had coffee and cake which was very bland. The choice of teas is less extensive than other coffee shops in the village.

The waitress/owner was more concerned with her children and a friend then serve us. We had to get our own menus then our drinks came but the main meal only came by the time our drinks were finished.The bacon was barely cooked and even when asked to cook it more was no better. A buttered bun with bacon yeuk !!

Enjoyed a nice lunch cooked to order. Service a little slow and music a little loud but staff very friendly and accommodating!

I go here regularly and always find the staff friendly and very helpful. The decor is beautiful and the play area caters for Mums and kids. There is nowhere local that caters for this type of customers. Food is lovely and the cakes are to die for (don't eat them if you're on a diet). I always have a latte which is gorgeous. I have a new baby grandson so I often visit with him and it's great as there are lots of other babies there too.

First time here and called in for quick coffee and cake. Food orders we saw going out looked nice with decent portions. Decent selection of fresh cakes/cookies which were nice. Just over £7 for a coffee,a tea,a cookie and piece of Victoria sponge with cream. Will go back.

This is a lovely cafe in one of the nicest parts of Washington - the old village. Highly recommend for a coffee and a cake or to hire out. The staff are fantastic and will do everything they can to cater for what you need. We had a lovely afternoon tea buffet for a family party. It was a brilliant afternoon and everyone was happy - including the kids who got to enjoy the kids corner full of toys.

Dropped in for breakfast during the half term break with the kids. Full English and scrambled egg on toast was excellent. Service was speedy and the staff were very friendly. My daughter really enjoyed the play area. Will defo be visiting again.

We called in to Olivia's this morning for the first time, for coffee and a scone. It was a small coffee shop, which was nicely decorated but where we sat, I felt like the seat was very high, so much so that my legs were dangling, and the table too low. It had a rather large (in comparison to the shop) very untidy children's play area. A friendly girl served us but even though we arrived before lunch, disappointingly there was only one scone left. She said they hadn't had their delivery as it was bank holiday. Our order was brought to the table without napkins, I thought they'd been forgotten so I went to the counter to ask for a couple, but they only had one left so we had to share! The scone was very dry, thankfully it was a nice cup of coffee. There was a TV on the wall with the volume up, showing a sport channel and also music playing. In the small area it was just too much. To be honest, I couldn't wait to leave. Sorry but not for me.

A pleasant venue for popping in for a coffee/tea and cake or scones. Nice warm soups and lovely baked potatoes with a good selection of fillings. Good fir breakfast, brunch or lunch. Will return soon.

My wife and I stopped here for a coffee and tea cake after visiting Old Washington Hall - across the road. We were made welcome and the service was friendly and the free Wi-Fi was a bonus. Young mum's obviously use it as a meeting place as it had a play area for young children - a really good feature. Good value on the items and a clean layout.

We had a great afternoon at Olivia's for my daughter's 3rd birthday. There's a lovely space for the children to play and great coffee for the grownups. What more do you need? The owner was incredibly accommodating and set up a great little party. The buffet was perfect and the cake she arranged was awesome!!! It was all very reasonably priced too. I would highly recommend this lovely cafe and will definitely be back for functions and for coffee with friends and the little ones ☺

I thought the children's menu was very poor, considering my grandson has a wide range of foods he enjoys. My snack was ok, but not that impressed by it. The staff were very nice and very clean. Sorry I wasn't that impressed.....

This is a great place to go for a sandwich and cake. The staff are nice and friendly, I'd recommend trying a slice of the carrot cake.

Toasties and a Mocha that's my favorite! Mocha is made to perfection and the toasties come with a little salad and crisps. Lovely view where you can sit and watch the world go by. Can not wait to go in the summer and sit outside!

I have visited Olivia's quite a few times now and have enjoyed every visit. I like the atmosphere in here very relaxed and warm. The staff are lovely and friendly and there was a good selection of drinks and food on offer. My only complaint would be its not big enough as on occasion there hasn't been tables available but I suppose if you make it bigger you lose the atmosphere

I visited Olivia's for the first time for a Sunday breakfast. It's small and cosy, we had a window seat so had a lovely view of the village green. We ordered cooked breakfasts and I was really pleased with the high standard of the food. Kayleigh was on her own and she managed to produce everything in good time. The coffee was excellent and the price is very reasonable. I'm looking forward to going again soon.

Having visited this coffee house several times over the past few months, it would be my first port of call for coffee and snack, however, called in today saturday 9th Jan 2016 on the offchance they would do a cooked breakfast and sure enough they did, superbly presented, my daughter had the cooked breakfast and I had their bagle topped with smoked salmon and cream cheese lush lush lush, we both had their deliciouse hot chocolate which is also yummy. The coffee house is set in the middle of the quaint village of old Washington, lovely views from the windows, certainly worth a visit folks

A variety of food and drinks to choose from, my favourite being the hot chocolate and the breakfast range! Recommend this to anyone in the area or passing by.

This is such a fab little coffee shop. Lovely area for children to keep entertained whilst parents enjoy the delicious food and coffee that's on offer! The carrot cake is amazing! Would definitely recommend this to others.

I visited Olivias with my friend and our children in December after a recommendation from my friend. The coffee shop is excellent for anyone with small children because it has a specific little area for the children to play which means I could enjoy a coffee and rather large piece of cake and catch up with my friend without having to worry about keeping the children seated. The coffee and food are very reasonably priced and were on my visit delicious. I will definitly be visiting this hidden gem again in 2016.

Beautiful coffee shop with the warmest welcome and brilliant play area for kiddies. Food is superb, especially the cake! Also great at hosting private functions, and the owner goes completely out her way to ensure you have the perfect day.

Such a gorgeous place to grab a bite to eat! Beautifully decorated and welcoming staff at your service. The cheesecake is the best of the best and the hot beef dips are delicious! To be honest, I've sampled pretty much everything on the menu and I can't fault with anything! Well done, I love it!
