Olives Delicatessen in Oxford

Came in for a coffee got served by a nice young gentleman so decided to leave a tip, only to find out that all of the tips earned go straight into the managers pocket.

As I have coeliac disease I was not impressed when I saw the worker handling gluten with the same gloves as my gluten free meal

I was very happy with my visit to Olives yesterday with a friend. Friendly staff and a pleasant, friendly atmosphere.

I ambled upon olives by mistake, and what a happy mistake. I went to get my order too early, and still drove an hour and a half to get my order later on in the day.

This delicatessen does a variety of freshly made sandwiches / baguettes / panini / bagels for £4.50. The guy here takes care in making them and that comes across in their quality plus the bread was really nice. I had roasted vegetables and mozzarella and my wife egg mayonnaise which she said was excellent.

I've tried some of their products and have been very happy with the quality -- very high standard. What I can say with certainty is that they live up to the name 'OLIVES' --- better quality olives cannot be found anywhere else in the city I know of. They have my business and I'm grateful to have their products to buy! Thank you!!!

excellent quality ingredients are used here. Cant fault the food everything is fresh and high quality ingredients. Staff are lovely and 1st class. I highly recommend Olives .

4 years after graduating and leaving oxford I returned for a visit. Olives was a well trusted lunch stop. It hasn’t changed and the winning formula is still going strong. The service was a little slower than it used to be. Where is that Frenchman, he sped things up and was great banter!

One of the best sandwich shops in Oxford. Staff are very friendly. They do good coffee nowadays too.

Olives has been my go to sandwich and coffee stop for all the four years I've been a student here. New management are exceptionally friendly and the place has really come on, the coffee is better than ever and the breakfast selection is best value in the city. Can't recommend it highly enough!

As a student I come here for lunch and my morning coffee most days a week. They have a huge selection of sandwiches (you can build your own and they have great specials!) and the coffee really does taste very good. The new management is fantastic, and Kieran (owner) is super friendly and always remembers your order. The location is right in the middle of everything important in the city as well. I choose Olives over any other coffee shop in Oxford.

Panini's and soups are far less interesting and tasty than they used to be. Having gone off them for a while, I tried Olives again for the first time in a few months. The meatball panini I had was pretty bland and the meatballs seemed like they were from a frozen packet. Nail in the coffin for me, for what used to be one of the few decent sandwich shops in Oxford. Friendly service but now just a run of the mill, average sandwich shop.

Olive's was once a great Oxford institution, turning out beautiful sandwiches, lovingly made, on freshly baked baguettes with excellent ingredients, many of which were imported from France. The new proprietors, though very friendly, are trying to increase profits by keeping the prices the same while seriously diluting quality. The result is an average sandwich shop, on par with Taylor's and its other high street competitors. The baguettes are no longer fresh, the pesto seems to be made from dried basil, the fish is lackluster. Sandwiches come out dry, under-flavoured and uninspiring. A very sad thing.

With all the cafes, eateries, and sandwich bars to choose from in Oxford, you won’t be disappointed in Olives Delicatessen. Great flavours from fresh ingredients. With a choice of pre-prepared or made to order the only problem is choice. Never been disappointed. Friendly, cheerful staff add to the experience. An Italian/French influence gives pleasant flavours and great tastes. Well and truly recommended; let the food talk for itself!

Having spent several years in Oxford, frequenting various cafe's and eateries in and around the city centre I can honestly say that Olives have the perfect recipe for success.

I reviewed this deli before it was sold! Unfortunately the new owners don't appear to have maintained the high standards set by the previous owner, cheaper and less filling in baguettes, dearer prices, closed when they're supposed to be open, especially Sunday's!! Why advertise opening times on your door but not open, how much business and goodwill have they lost? Such a waste of a good deli!

Visité este encantador café/tienda de sándwich para un bocado rápido con un par de amigos durante la semana. Un perfecto regalo con el clima tan agradable. Pasó por aquí como me lo recomendó un amigo, pasaron muchas veces antes, pero nunca aunque para entrar. Sin duda merece la pena una visita! Tienen una gran variedad de rellenos para elegir para baguettes y encantador panini recién hecho. Servicio muy rápido y amable personal. Recomiendo encarecidamente probar este lugar para un almuerzo rápido.

What a great little Delicatessen. Customer service is great, food is great and coffee is the best in town. Wouldn't go anywhere else!

I visit this deli at least twice a week - the baguettes are amazing and the ingredients are fresh and delicious! The staff are always friendly and it is reasonably priced (for oxford) - would recommend trying their 'olives favourites' - always delicious

The Olives is very popular among local students. Therefore, I have decided to grab my lunch from there. I was surprised with the amount of choices they offer. Moreover, the service was very friendly and fast. The buffalo mozzarella and sun dried tomato baguette tasted great.This place is now run by a new owner which keeps the standards up to a high level. They accept cash and credit cards and provide takeaway packaging for the food. It is a good little cafe. I will definitely recommend it to others!

I had to stop at the bus company offices next door, and so popped in because they advertised a special of coffee (*any* coffee-- latte, cappucino, americano, etc.) with a pastry *or* panettone free, and then was completely wowed by the sight of their amazing meats and cheeses sitting in the counter refrigerator, unsliced. Capitulating to curiosity and buying one of their baguette specials (buffalo mozarella, parma ham, sundried tomatoes, basil, olive oil and pepper) was the best gustatorial decision I have made, and their mozzarella was the best I have had in memory (and I grew up in Farmer's Market country, where this was a saturday staple, and my family is Italian). I have always lived on the other side of Oxford, and now I've moved away, but for the brief time I'm back this is going to be my go-to. Taylor's is left in the dust. Oh yeah-- and the coffee and panettone were delicious, too!

Buffalo mozzarella baguette was to die for. Unfortunately I dont live in Oxford otherwise I would come here everyday.Busy little takeaway.

We stopped here whilst shopping in Bedford. A cosy comfortable place with excellent cakes. Shame that they don't take cards so take plenty of cash.

Stumbled upon this gem of a place after finishing coffee with a friend, and couldn't have been more thankful! We were off to Highclere Castle for the afternoon, and wanted to have some lunch packed. Their baguette sandwiches were to die for, and the staff was so friendly and pleasant. I would be here everyday if I lived in Oxford!

If you want lots of choice-paninis,baguettes,salads then visit this deli. Friendly proprietor offering recommendations on own food and local restaurants/ cocktail bars. Decent prices, friendly staff and great food...what more can you ask!

I really wanted to like this Deli. The people were friendly and it wasn't too expensive (relatively) but at least by US standards, the food was not good. Our family of 5 ordered different sandwiches and soups so I can say it wasn't just one thing we didn't like. After a few bits we just ended up throwing it all away. That said, we didn't care for most British food on our trip so maybe locals would be ok with it.

After trying a couple different cafes in Oxford, I definitely think this is the best sandwich! Super fresh, high quality ingredients. Very good value for money.

Olive's is one of those independent gems that Oxford is teeming with, but is definitely a cut above all other sandwich shops. The selection of fillings on offer is excellent and the baguettes (both white and brown) are made to perfection. Watch out for the "baguette of the week", as this is always a superb choice (especially when it's the rare beef!!). Other favourites of mine include mortadella & emmental, and the excellent duck pate. They also do soups and paninis, although I never felt the need to venture away from the sandwiches, and have a good collection of deli items for sale. In the summer they also sell ice cream from a small stall outside. Christoph is incredibly friendly and service always comes with a smile. The only downside is the lengthy queues on a sunny afternoon - well-kept secret Olives is not!

Love stopping by for sandwiches and talking with the owner. He is a fun guy who loves to talk to customers and always gives me new recipe recommendations! The food is fantastic too!

I had two sandwiches on two different days. Both were tasty including the bread and the fixings. It's not a place I'd care to sit in to eat (there's nothing wrong with it, but it's very basic and seems to be very full), so I got my food to go and kept thinking of it as a great bargain. What more can you ask for?

I picked up a sandwich or a baguette at the Olives on a couple of evenings after work. Primarily because it across the street from my hotel. Can't complain, decent food and a friendly proprietor.

We found this place by accident in search of some food before having a pint of craft beer. We chose a baguette sandwich with wholemeal bread, prosciutto, Buffala mozzarella, tomato, basil, black pepper & olive oil. Must tell you that best sandwich & combination I ever had. However, I give them a 4 only because they offered no alternative lactosefree milk to my coffee. And when I asked for it the answer was semi-skimmed. :)

This is one of the best sandwiches I've eaten in years, made fresh by a pleasant young woman. Reasonable prices, too. Seek this out!

Been coming for a few years - standardly get the sandwich of the week. Roast beef baguette is great. All of them are - go to this place if you want a sandwich, salad, or deli things in oxford. Won't regret it.

There are sandwich shops in Oxford that serve ready made sandwiches with a used by date - yes I am serious. At Olives sandwiches are made to order. The tuna baguette is as good as it gets.

I was in Oxford for a day off and I didn't fancy going to a chain restaurant for lunch. I was walking down the High Street from Warneford Hospital and I passed all enticing looking local shops. Olives particularly stood out, due to a: it was busy and b: full of locals and not tourists. I chose a white Baggette with buffalo mozzarella, smoked salmon, corichons and roasted veg. With a Buffalo Mozzarella ball and bottle of green tea. The Baggette was lovely, soft Yet crisp and the mozzarella was divine, creamy and Moreish. The smoked salmon was good, not too oily and it complemented the mozzarella and veg well. I was lucky the weather was very nice in this day and I was able to find somewhere peaceful to eat near the Radcliffe Camera.I would definitely return to Olives when I'm next in Oxford.

Olives Delicatessen is, and has been for many years already, one of the lunchtime favourites of Oxford students. Conveniently located across from the Examinations Schools, where a great number of lectures are held, there is almost always a cue in front of Olive's during lunchtime.And that for good reasons: next to the very reasonably priced panini, Olives also offers custom made baguette sandwiches, which can be filled with a variety of delicatessen that have deserved that appellation – I remember very fondly a particularly delicious wild boar paté with brie cheese.In addition to sandwiches, panini, soups, and hot drinks, Olives also offers something French and Italian food items for the discerning pantry.So, do eat at Olives when you're nearby; there are many other good sandwich shops in Oxford, but this one is special, and the staff always very nice.

I've lived in Oxford more than 5 years and this is by far the best place for salads and sandwiches in the whole city. It's absolutely delicious, the owner uses incredibly high quality cheeses, meats, and other ingredients as well as super fresh bread. You can make up your own sandwich, but the combinations he suggests (especially the rotating Baguette of the Week) have never once disappointed me. There is a nice arrange of French and Italian provisions for sale in the shop, as well. An absolute find, so delicious!!

My husband and I stayed 4 lovely days in Oxford and had Olives freshly made baguettes 3 ofthose days! This is a wonderful Deli offering French and Italian food and the most wonderful fresh made baguettes we've eaten. Try Olives favourite baguette of Italian buffalo mozzarella,fresh basil, parma ham, olive oil, sun blushed tomatoes on a fresh organic baguette - voted best sandwich shop in Oxford by the students! This is take-away only and we would chat with the the nice man busily working behind the counter each visit. We went by our last day in Oxford to say quick good -byes to him (they werealways busy, often with lines) and asked about a good burger spot to eat. His recommendationwas wonderful and as we passed his business on our way back, sadly Olives had just closedfor the day and we did not get to thank him again - hopefully he will see this review and remember the couple from Tennessee, USA and if not ..... we have wonderful memories of of Olives Delicatessen, their great food and the nice gentleman we chatted with there. Do try this little gem of a deli and their fine quality food, with good service, veryreasonable prices and nice staff. Look for their bright green painted store front and sample their bakery items for a sweet treat as well. We've sure missed Olives since our return home!

Olives is my favourite sandwich shop OF ALL TIME! I was drawn to Olives in my first year at university because every lunch time, without fail, there was a long queue outside the door. It's a tiny little place with traditional french pastes, sauces and jars available to buy as well as fresh lunches. There is no where to sit, it's purely a take-away place but that never made me go anywhere else - the quality of food is just unbeatable. The staff are lovely, and the service efficient so you never queue for long. If you become a regular there's also a personal touch - I returned a year after I graduated and they remembered me which was lovely!Baguettes, fresh soup, ciabattas, paninis, and cakes are among the many options, and they always have a tasty baguette of the week up on their blackboard if you can't choose from the many wonderful choices! My personal favourite is the chicken and pesto on white baguette, with 3 salad choices thrown in with the price. The price is hugely reasonable, especially because they cram their sandwiches full of ingredients, so they're always fit to bursting. Fresh, super tasty and a French gem in the middle of Oxford, I choose it every time.
