Oliver's Fish & Chips in Barnet

Chips under cooked… almost raw. Fish was edible but tasteless, batter was soggy. EXPENSIVE! I have had way better fish & chips from a beach side chippy. It’s a rip off.

I had my first delivered fish and chips from Oliver’s in Whetstone tonight. I was very pleased with the quality and size of the portion and the cod was lovely and fresh. I will definitely be going there again

I had the takeaway this evening and it was absolutely superb! The Cod and Haddock arrived hot and were truly excellent in every way. I have read some negative reviews on here and I just don’t believe them. This is the best fish and chip shop anywhere in London.

First time to this place! (Pun intended!!). Under current circumstances, I'd reserved table via email. HUGE portions - had to take half my plaice in matzo-meal home in a Doggy bag. Mushy peas were not traditional recipe - think they were just mashed garden peas - but ok. Homemade Tartare sauce - delicious.

Have never been disappointed with Oliver’s take away. I read the reviews so was concerned that maybe their high standards were slipping but I should not have worried. The haddock in batter was certainly not greasy nor were the delicious chips. We also had sea bass and whole sea bream on the grill which were cooked well and met expectations. The home made mushy peas and Israeli salad were good portions and also did not disappoint. Staff were, as always, friendly.

I am kicking myself for not reading the reviews here. We paid £38 for three cod and chips which is very expensive in my opinion. Our meal went in the bin, everything was too oily, too greasy, too heavy to eat. The chips were either refried or the oil was too old. Most of the fish batter was stuck to the paper but we wouldn’t have eaten it as it was just too oily. The cod fillet though was fresh, a good portion of fish and the homemade tartar sauce was really nice. To add insult to injury, they gave us a takeaway menu which advertised free desert on Thursdays with each meal and they never offered one to us.

I used to love this place for a regular Friday night fish and chips. Had 3 bad experiences and swore I would never go back. Stupid me did it again yesterday and I can’t believe what they have done to this place. The batter and fish was not edible and very greasy. The most frustrating part for me is that they have the cheek to put a premium cost to what they are serving. Our whole dinner went in the bin! Never to return!

Collected a takeaway, chips were awful. Crunchy and hard. If I hadn't had the children with me I would have gone back for a refund. I called them instead, I complained and the lady on the phone said " sorry about that". Not even an offer of a refund. This is the 3rd time I have used this place, never again. I never ever complain, but thought I should share this.

Have been going since it started. It was always expensive but for quality will pay. After seeing bins in summer covered in flies out the back, getting dicky tummies from the fish on one visit they cannot even serve fresh chips. I have had to throw them away. I decided to try them again... The manager knew who I was and advised his new idiot to offer me fresh chips if i waited a few minutes... After a few minutes they started cooking again and said a few minutes again.... When they were finally ready hhe idiot chucked them in with the old ones and mixed them all up and I should have thrown them away again.... Disgusting. The place and lication has such promise but the staff cllearly have no idea or no care to run this res aurant as should be. The fish n chips half mile down road by cinema is much much much better... And always busy and fresh.

I’ve had takeaways from here a number of times down the years but this was the worst fish and chips by far. It’s overpriced but I don’t mind paying it if the quality is good. However this was worse than your average general cheap fish and chip shop, despite their sky high prices. The chips were, well just chips really, difficult to get them too wrong but the cod was swimming in water/oil which seeped through the batter, the portion was made to look much larger due to the high percentage of batter on the fish. The gherkins were the smallest gherkins I’ve ever seen (I never thought I would be complaining about a gherkin ffs!) - they were the tiny ones you get in a supermarket jar- I wish I’d take a photo, but they were so small that by the time I took a bite, it was half gone! The only nice thing is the box that it’s served in........

Waited 45 mins for our takeaway before calling for an update to be told that they had forgotten about our order and hadn’t even started cooking our food. We finally received our order after 1 hour 15 mins - we only ordered two grilled sea bass fillets which takes 5 minutes!!!!

Having lived in Totteridge for 5 years and used this fish and chip shop without any complaint of the food they serve , I have to mention that the delivery service is badly let down by the management not having two tills and only one active till taking off street orders and telephone orders . I rang the order line on this occasion to order for myself one cod and chips and peas, it took me 10 mins and a lot of apologies from the young person on the phone to take a simple order due to the Management having to share only one till serving online orders and walk in orders . Please if your going to charge higher prices and offer the public a good service you need to invest in another till , as at the moment it really is not acceptable especially when people volume is more demanding on the staff on Fridays leading up to the weekend !!!

I wish we'd read the reviews on this place before eating there. We'd just driven from Stansted Airport after arriving from Spain and decided to try out Oliver's Fish & Chips as it always looks so nice from the outside and we managed to sit at an outside table whilst the sun was still shining on a Sunday evening. To our horror the fish we ordered (haddock) arrived in thick greasy batter and the chips were anaemic, hard and must've been old ones that had been over cooked. The house salad that we ordered had very limp lettuce in it and I think it was doused in balsamic dressing to disguise the limpness. To top it all, there was a discretionary 12.5% service charged added on top which we couldn't be bothered to argue with but needless to say we won't be going back there again. We've had better (and fresher) fish and chips in a pub! What a shame.

Make sure you go on paid day it’s the most expensive chip shop I’ve ever been to A very small soft butter roll £2.50 Also the chips tasted very oily and the fish was nice just the batter was rock hard even though it was cooked fresh This is a meat free tradition fish & chip shop I definitely will not be returning if I was brave I would of asked for a refund

Chips weren’t fresh and quite dry. Shame because when I ate from here In March was so good. Was like I’d gone to a different chip shop

A la hora del almuerzo pedí una bolsa de papas fritas y el asistente me dijo que solo había suficiente para una bolsa pequeña. Tomé mis papas fritas y comencé a comerlas camino a casa. YUK! Sin lugar a dudas, los chips más asquerosos que he probado en mi vida. Eran duros, secos y tibios. Supongo que habían estado allí desde la noche anterior. Él podría haberme dicho que no tenían chips frescos a menos que, por supuesto, siempre tengan ese sabor. Nunca comas comida de este restaurante, la comida es tan vil que tuve que tirar toda la caja.

Satisface mis antojos de pescado y papas fritas! Una porción muy generosa de papas fritas cuando ordené y una masa liviana regular y muy agradable para el pescado. ¡No es un gran pedazo de pescado como usted puede conseguir en otras tiendas de pescado y papas fritas pero lo suficientemente grande para un cliente hambriento!

Went to this resturant for a birthday celebration, food was great and the staff were very attentive.

Went their yesterday evening with 2 of my friends to have some fish and chips give my order 3 cods with chips 6/7 mins wait to get chips ready while taking out chips some fell down on floor this guy without any hesitation grab them from floor and mix them with the rest ready chips such disgusting thing he did.happened infront of my eyes .never paid just left the shop.this small guy with black shirt and grey trouser was so rude aswell not even a single sign of guilt like he never bothered pls people love you family love yourself never go their again ...

This was our first time trying Oliver’s and we were not impressed. The fish was very good quality but under seasoned, the chips weren’t crispy enough and the curry sauce was more like soup. Very expensive for what was an average meal.

I’ve had delivery from this restaurant several times. Although I’ve had a few problems with them getting food to me hot and on time, I’ve continued to use them because the quality was so good. This ended on Saturday night when needed food delivered so as not to miss the England game. Food arrived on time and hot but there the compliments end. The haddock was tasteless, the chips (ordered very well done) were pale and soggy and the coleslaw had but a lick of dressing. I wrote an email complaining but have not had a reply 2 days later. NEVER AGAIN

The salad with my takeaway was out on top of a hot piece of cod so had hot salad! Portions were large but none of it wasn’t very nice ! Goujons In matzo meal very bland & dry . Cod burgers were also dry wouldn’t use again

The fish batter was burnt and we sent the chip back. The chips looked and tasted raw. The salad was nice.

Got a take away, was very poor, grilled fish was greasy, chips were just ok and salad was shrivelled and brown. Def not recommend and would not go back.

Fish and chips done right can be a thing of absolute beauty. Done wrong and it can be one of the worst meals of your life. Olivers is neither of those, their fish and chips are perfectly reasonable although the batter could be better tasting. If this was a run of the mill chippy charging 5 pounds for fish and chips i would be happy... But its not. Over 10 pounds for fish and chips is excessive so I was expecting the bees knees. Unfortunately 2 fish and chips and chips plus a couple of drinks came to 30 pounds a price which can only be described as unjustified. Would I return... Maybe if it was someone else's money.

My family and I have ordered fish from Oliver’s for more then a year and in two occasions we have eaten in I must say there fish is fresh and well cooked the service is friendly too

order a haddock and a plaice and a large chips collected by my wife as soon she returned whit the Oliver bag the smell of stale oil was incredible , the fish look OK until i taste it,i have been in catering for 42 years and i have never felt so insulted to be serve such a disgusting frozen mushy fish difficult to say he was haddock, then the chips they were even a worst experience a mixture of stale mushy and sticky top up with under cook one . i will never return to this premises and i make sure to make all my friend aware of my experience.

Quality of food was ok but stupidly expensive. They charge 12.5% service charge if you eat in. For what? Passing you the box of food about 30 centimetres away from the counter. Ridiculous

Got an email from them tonight saying, “it’s cold outside why not stay in and order fish and chips? Ordered online at 6.30 for a 7.00 delivery, got a call saying it would be 7.45. Fine. It’s now 8.30 and still no food. Called to complain and they said sorry we only have one driver, we’ll send an uber.

Burnt, over cooked fish and inedible mushy peas. Eaten from this place half a dozen times and it gets worse each time (I won’t be going there again). Avoid at all costs as they have no idea what fish and chips looks like.

Sometimes the food here is amazing but other times, it is awful. There is just no consistency. The chips can be overlooked or raw but when they do get it right they are wonderful. It is still one of the best in the area and would be better with just a bit more effort

I would strongly advise avoiding this ludicrously overpriced fish and chip shop. The fish portions were tiny, for both the plaice and haddocks ordered, the chips soggy and the coleslaw portion was in a container the size of a thimble. There is an amazing fish and chip restaurant only a mile or two away from there, in High Barnet, where the food is a zillion times better and the portions are great.

On the way home last week my wife and I couldn't decide what to have and thought we would try Oliver's for the first time since it got refurbished and we are so glad we did.

Always enjoyed the food and great service at Oliver's. Our go to fish and chips and looking forward to our next visit. Only a small number of tables, so need to book in good time.

Each time we have ordered from Olivers the quality of the food has been excellent, it has arrived hot and well packed. Lots of food and the order has always been correct. Definitely worth a go!

Went to Oliver's because I had a craving for Fish and Chips. Sat inside with my wife and enjoyed our meal. We hadn't eat any fish in the UK so asked the staff who were only to happy to describe the different fish they had on offer. Enjoyed our meal and will be back again to try something new.

The graphics, style, design and image of the shop is great. It breathes confidence and you really feel your going to get something special.

Came to olivers for take away fish and chips for lunch I have to admit for a fish and chip shop that's in such an affluent area it fails on every level undercooked fish thick soggy batter and chips served from the dregs of the fryer I had curry sauce for my sins it was burnt and the staff were so lucklustre.

Visited the restaurant for dinner. The seating area has room for six sat at tables with room for probably another six sat at a bar.

I'm visiting Oliver's regularly and I can only say great things about this place. Food is really good and their staff is really friendly. I would definitely recommend to visit if you are near High Road or anywhere in Barnet.

Terrible. Batter terrible chips terrible peas terrible. Delivery terrible, peas leaked everywhere and the oil was rancid. Would never order or go here again.

We had the Grilled tuna and salad, haddock and chips which were really nice.

I don't relish writing poor reviews but the downhill slide that has taken place at Oliver's can't go unmentioned. I previously posted how lovely it was; hot tasty food which is want you want from a fish and chip shop. Sadly the food was so inedible that we left most of it and this has been our experience the last 2 times we have picked up food from there. The fish was so over cooked I can't see how they could pack it up for a customer without seeing what they were serving. The chips were the same. The nail is the coffin for Oliver's was the mushy peas; they used to be worth the trip but now they are soggy and tasteless. Sad.

Visited here about 6 months ago and had the Thursday special half price deal and it was reasonable so we decided to revisit with friends on a Sunday evening. What a disastrous meal. It calls itself a restaurant but apart from 2 tables pushed into the corner and a small sit at bar this is NOT a proper restaurant but a glorified take away.

Selling itself as a high end fish and chip place, the food does not back up the price, caught between two stalls as to what it is. Far better fish and chip places nearby.

For a takeaway on a cold night the food was still hot after a 5 minutes journey home. The plaice was a good size and was nice and fresh. The cod was just about a reasonable size and was also good tasting. The standard portion of chips was very generous but had a most unpleasant taste - what on earth are they frying them in and, whatever it is, it needs changing pronto?! At the prices charged one expects an overall higher standard.

On a personal quest to find the best Fish and chips shop in London, I thought I'd start with the my local chippy, Oliver's Fish & Chips. This is my first experience with this particular chippy so my review will be based on the meal I had alone, the battered cod and large chips.

Oliver's Fish & Chips is always clean, bright and fresh.

Really gone down hill. Used to be great. £26 for small fish and trips for 3 to go and it was all dreadful. Soggy chips - under cooked they went from the fryer to the box and then 3 minutes to our flat and already they were soggy so it's not the journey time - and by way of a complete contrast the fish was over cooked! Yes over cooked battered cod! Who woulda thunk it? Dark brown batter and a piece of shrivelled dedicated cod rattling around in side! Go somewhere else or pay the price

Always good quality fish and chips. Possibly a bit expensive but worth it. Apart from the usual fayre tuna and other fish are available. No meat is cooked here.

puts you off fish and chips for 6 months! cold food delivered after an hour and we live minutes away. wrong fish delivered and the fish cakes were missing. they charge £3.50 for delivering rubbish food. NEVER AGAIN!

Everything you could ask for from a fish and chips restaurant! Fish was fresh and tasted delicious. There was an impressive variety of choice on the menu which was offered at great value. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.

My daughter is Gluten intolerant so a fish and chip supper is a delight on occasions. Oliver's cook the most scrumptious, crispy, non greasy GLUTEN FREE cod & chips every Wednesday.

Total Joke of a place. Advertised as being open until 9.45pm except Mondays. Turned up at 9.15pm looking forward to some yummy fish 'n chips. Shut. Staff said they 'had no customers'. What about me. Utterly unreliable. If you say you are going to be open, BE OPEN.

Oliver;s is a fish and chip shop with a modest number of tables. Booking is therefore advisable.

Loved the cod and chips I got, the price was ok will go back when passing by that way again. Staff members was really friendly too.

This has to be the worst fish we ever had. Cod - One piece was grey and undercooked, the other just tasted like mush. The batter wasn't very nice either and quite soggy on the underside, resembling a plaster after being in the water too long. So many crumbly ends in the chips but managed to find some fat ones. I feel like I need another dinner as so unsatisfied. Oh, and the packaging, so much it will fill my recycle bin. Huge cardboard boxes. What's wrong with good old greaseproof paper?

It looks good, with tables outside and a nice modern interior, but the food itself was somewhat of a disappointment. The coating of the cod (matzo flour) was the best thing about it, the fish itself was not as tasty as it should have been, and the chips were bland. For the quality offered it was also too expensive.

Since the new owners have taken over the food is awful! Far too much batter which means you can barely taste the food. Do not get a delivery as it takes around and hour and is stone cold!

Give the impression of being up market but would be left behind by most High Street chippies. Premium prices for below average food. Avoid and try the far superior Toffs in Muswell Hill.

I really wanted to support this local business but it's really hard when it's that terrible.

Ordered 2 haddock and one cod with chips . I ordered it at 8pm and it arrived at 8.35pm, perfectly packaged and was really well cooked without being too oily. Highly recommend the service and look forward to my next order. You also do get discount if you reorder however this is only applicable if order is made online.

I noticed the old fish and chip shop was now a smart looking new establishment.

Have given this chip shop a couple of chances now but no more. One delivery was over an hour and a half long and the delivery driver got addressee with me on my doorstep. Second time I went to get my food myself, I live two minutes away and the food was stone cold when I got home. I phoned to inform them and was told that that cannot happen as their heater is on?, so basically told I was wrong and a liar?

The fish was grilled to order and was perfect, the chips were crisp and tasty and not greasey a pleasure>

Oliver's does great fish and chips. Posher than your average chippy with friendly service and a pretty outside area however it's the food that singles it out: crisp fresh batter on the fish and lovely chips.

Lovely fresh homemade food. Try the mushy peas - they are amazing! Plus they deliver locally too. We recommend Oliver's.

So pleased I have an Oliver's on my door step. Absolutely delicious food and they deliver too!! I don't think it's pricey considering the quality of the food, cod bites and chips for £5.75 is a bargain if you ask me. My new favourite

I didn't come here for a few months after they'd opened as I'd heard the prices had shot up and the portions were smaller than with the previous owners.

Popped in for a meal on a Friday night and the place was heaving with people buying their take away dinners. We opted to eat in. Waited ages for the food. When it finally arrived it was fresh and tasty.

We visited late on a Friday evening and had fresh fish cooked to order which was delicious. We ordered only one large portion of chips which was plenty for 3 of us. Definitely will go again

Wow! Fabulously fresh cooked battered fish with huge portions of chips sold as 'regular' - enough for 3 people! Sell allergy specific food too! Very punctual delivery on a traditional fish & chip supper Friday!!

The fish is very fresh with lovely crisp batter, nice homemade chips. The staff are all very friendly and accommodating. Will certainly return and highly recommend this place!

I've collected a takeaway from Oliver's a handful of times since they've opened and always been very satisfied. They offer a good range of fried and grilled fish, as well as many sides and even homemade mushy peas! They're not the cheapest, but for the quality and range of fish, the price is fair and most definitely worth it. As you would expect, they do get quite busy at weekends so I've found calling ahead to order works really well. I believe they do 'gluten free' on Wednesdays, which is quite a good idea. Will be back in the near future! Keep up the good work!

I am delighted to confirm that as a local resident I feel we can now claim bragging rights over our rival fish & chip outlets in Muswell Hill & Barnet for the best takeaway locally in my opinion, we have been using Oliver's since they opened regularly on a Friday evening and while they experienced a few hiccups in the early days due to the volume of customers and a new team working together they have certainly got their act together now.

Rude staff & owner. Overpriced underwhelming food. Dreadful service. Really, what's left that might even remotely be a positive. Have tried this awful place twice as wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt after a poor (very poor) first experience. Consistent. There's a positive. They are definitely consistent. They were very poor the first time and equally poor the second. I will never be going back & would urge anyone contemplating going not to. Go to McDonalds instead. It's no worse, much cheaper, bigger selection, staff are generally polite & helpful & the kids get a toy with their meal. Seriously! Go anywhere else!

When Oliver's first opened, we were given a taster portion to try out. Very nice offer to have, and the fish was tasty and the chips well cooked and crunchy. However i have been twice since and shall not be returning.I have been disappointed with theiraverage sized and tasting fish, and soft tasteless chips. I also agree with another writer in that if you get a take away the bottom of the fish sticks badly to the paper they use. not very nice. But the worse things, their mushy peas!! I've never tasted anything so awful in my life! again agree with the other writer in saying they are not traditional. The colour is a greeny yellow, and they definitely tasted like processed peas. they were a weird consistency and to be honest i couldn't finish them, the taste was horrible and slimy. Such a shame as this is my local place but i wont be returning again. I will however make the extra effort and go back to Toffs in Muswell hill which is still by far the best around the area albeit pricey.

have been 3 times for t/a and the food for fish and chips has always been good. However the staff are so miserable, unfriendly and slow I'm having second thoughts about going back. Whoever owns it sort it out you will lose business!

Having gone on the second day and tried the fish it was fine and nearer than our favourite locally. However the delivery service is terrible. The first time we tried delivery it was very slow. The second time we tried we never got anything. After 45 minutes we phoned up and asked where it was. We were told it was on the way (we live 2 - 3 minutes drive away. After another 15 minutes we phoned again to be told they did not know where our food was. When we said they must have been lying when they said it was on the way and we wanted to know the truth now they told us that what we ordered (plaice) was no longer available so what would we like instead. At that point we told them we did not want anything from them and we would sort ourselves out elsewhere.

Visited on their 2nd week of opening. In the first week there was a very long queue outside - only to be expected with a new place in the area, and lots of people checking it out. So on this Friday I was lucky enough to find a parking space right outside.

This Fish & Chips shop has just opened (September 2015) in Whetstone, London - I think they have another store somewhere else in London.
