Oli & Joes in Gateshead

Family 3hr lunch today - 8 of us. We haven’t been since it has had a refit and wow what a transformation. Staff were exceptional and fabulous with our granddaughter. Starters, mains and desserts were all delicious. Best Italian we’ve been to for a while and we’ll definitely be back.

Excellent value local Italian restaurant. Great menu choices. Very tasty food and large portions. Very pleasant staff.

We visited on the opening weekend and had the 3 course special. £9.95 and we paid the extra £4 and had sirloin steaks, which were nice and tasty and had hardly any fat on. I had it with the peppercorn sauce, which was delightful. Starters, I had the potato skins and my friend had the bruschetta. The bruschetta was light and refreshing. All finished off with homemade cheesecake. Staff were friendly and attentive and we will definitely return. 30% off the bill for the opening weekend as well. Bargain!

Went to the newly refurbished restaurant today for Sunday lunch and it was excellent, lots of beef and veg with a huge Yorkshire pudding and delicious gravy. The staff were great too especially the Greek waiter. We will definitely be going back as soon as we can 👏👏👏

This is my second visit here and the food was equally as good, hot, tasty and excellent value. The service is also absolutely top notch with really friendly staff. Special mention to Claire who couldn't do enough for us and the lovely pleasant jake. I would 100% recommend this place.

Visited this restaurant several times but felt the food and staff weren’t as good as when it first opened so haven’t been for over six months. This changed last night, everything was perfect. Three different starters, simple but beautifully presented and full of flavour. Main courses were fillet steaks cooked to perfection (one medium and one blue), the king prawns which came with it were huge and juicy, with the price being so much cheaper than you would expect to pay, however the quality, most definitely 100%. I had a calzone pizza which again had plenty of filling and the pizza dough was so tasty. A special thank you to the lady who served us, didn’t get her name, she was friendly and attentive without being intrusive - definitely going back sooner rather than later.

I was looking forward to Oli & Joe’s because, from the outside, it seemed to promise authentic Italian dining and a perfect place for our celebrations, but unfortunately, the character inside of the restaurant didn’t live up to my expectations at all and the atmosphere was rather flat and uninviting. A lovely, traditional menu without any of the usual surrounding charm you’d expect to go with it. The service and quality of food on offer both deserve to be matched with a bit more of a formal environment, in my opinion. We were able to choose our own table and felt like both the waiter and waitress were very welcoming and attentive. Our party was served quickly, and although some of the flavours lacked compared to other Italian restaurants I’ve tried (the garlic butter with the Pollo Kiev was a bit bland and the garlic mayonnaise tasted devoid of garlic), I was pleased that the effort was there with the presentation, and that the general ingredients were also of a good standard, which made for an enjoyable meal that‘s otherwise only let down by the setting. For a casual visit, it would have ticked most of the boxes— nice staff, decent food & the prices aren’t bad — but I found the overall experience to be quite average for a special occasion and wouldn’t recommend it for that type of event, which is a shame because this place isn’t quite doing itself justice.

I ordered a pepperoni pizza yesterday for collection told it would be ready at a specific time , when I arrived for collection I had to wait 10 minutes before it was ready. Not much point in asking when you want it for if they just cook it when you arrive. Then when it did arrive I have never seen such a pathetic pizza 9 skimpy pieces of pepperoni on a full size pizza, when I complained I was told that was the normal “ration” they would not do anything about it . RUBISH

Really enjoyed our meal at Oli&Joes! We went during the week on a nice day, and it was pretty quiet. The bruschetta was so delicious and just as expected, plenty of tomatoes, onions and balsamic vinegar 😍 the potato skins were also delicious, especially for £3.95! I had a risotto for my main, and my partner had a lasagne. The risotto wasn’t my favourite (something was missing not quite sure what, still nice enough though), however the lasagne was so delicious and I wish I had it as well! Service was also super quick and staff are lovely. Will certainly return 👌🏻☺️

Went for a lunchtime special. The three course meals are very good for the price, however place needs a tidy up. I’ve been going here for years. I loved it when it was Vera Italia! It just seems like the place lacks atmosphere. It’s gone so minimalist that everything is so grey and white, it’s oppressive. It could do with some colour. I wouldn’t like to see the kitchen if the toilets are anything to go by. Broken taps and filthy floors and skirtings. Service was good and staff friendly, but think it could do with a good clean.

This was our Christmas Lunch so really looked forward to seeing distant friends,The table allowed us to chat[it was round]Lots of choice,I had spicy soup and chicken with a pepper sauce.Nobody had any complaint and my grandson loved it as some portions were large so he helped finish them,The service was perfect,timely and unobtrusive.

Visited for the 3rd time. 1st time having Sunday lunch, had the lamb which was beautiful, and loads of it. Good veg and Yorkie. Brilliant value - 3 courses for £11.95

Visited here tonight as part of my belated Birthday present and wow what a place!! Food was amazing and the staff went above and beyond for us, so friendly and the service was first class, very warm welcome as soon as we entered!! Thank you to Claire and the rest of the staff who made our evening perfect. We'll see you again in the future.

Visit with friends and had a fantastic dining experience. The food was first class. Perfectly seared scallops in a parsley butter sauce followed by succulent and flavoursome fillets take cooked to perfection. The Diane source was divine. Supported by a good selection of wine and cocktails and home-made desserts this was a culinary experience which I look forward to repeating soon. Mark the man in charge was attentive thoughtful and entertaining. His staff provided an excellent service and I would highly recommend this establishment.

We ordered a takeaway Christmas Dinner from Oli & Joe and it was great! Everything that you would expect was in there and they even threw in complimentary Christmas puddings for dessert! These guys have been fantastic during the lockdown/covid period and can't recommend them enough!

This is local to us and our regular haunt. Always had great food and service. Especially fond of the sea bass and feta salad.

We arrived as a family of 11 and had a nice long family table the feel was good, the food was OK some bad point minestrone soup was terrible, very watery and far to peppery, the bolognese sauce was perfect for the kids but watery for the adults, what I think had happened is the spaghetti was taken straight out of the water and not drained correctly so this watered down the sauce. the Pizza were very good, the calzone pizza was very tasty. so all-in-all not bad.

Ate here on the Eat out and help out scheme. Food was tasty and service very friendly and good. Lots of choice on the menu. We're tried the king prawn tampura, which was delicious and huge for a starter. For mains I had fish platter, which included seabass, tuna and salmon. Very nice but the salmon was too salty for me, so the waitress took this off or bill. Hubby had chicken au provoire, and chips which were delicious. Precises obviously good for to the deal. Would still go back as very good! Recommended place to eat out.

Chose here after somewhere else let us down and can safety say we will stick with oli and joes in future. Fish cakes lovely, salmon tasty, pizza just right, lots of sauce on the chicken. Potato skins just right. Only issue was they deliver via just eat to our postcode but won’t when you ring direct? We had to ring as the menu on just eat is reduced and didn’t have all of the items wanted. We will order again!

Bologna is pizza takeout - Opened my pizza box to find it was black all around the edges and the bolognaise sauce was just three dollops just stuck on top of the pizza like it was an afterthought!! Not very good impression for my first time there.

Restaurant is on the front street of Sunniside. Was originally 'The Sun Inn' public house. The layout is exactly as it was as a pub. Parking at rear is small and tight.I was visiting with my friend who is a wheelchair user, who had booked ahead and enquired about access. We got there to find a set of steps, but suddenly a lady appeared and let us in another front door. Good job we both had not been in wheelchairs though, as if lady hadn't been there, we wouldn't have been able to get in.We were in an upstairs level online with the kitchen on our own. Not the best as toilets were on main level, but we were offered use of main room and she would get a ramp.So if my friend need the loo she would have had to ask them for the ramp!Service was good and attentive, but we did end up with the wrong meal, but this was quickly corrected. The food was set out nicely on the plate and was OK. I was cold throughout the meal and on leaving discovered that the back door, through the kitchen was wide open on a freezing cold and windy day.The Sunday lunch special was £9.99 I think, which is £2 more than the same restaurant in Whickham, with the same or similar deal.Would a return? Probably not, I would go to Whickham.

Came for dinner with the family. I ordered the steak with garlic butter sauce. Gorgeous, cooked to my liking. Wife had a calzone, massive portion.Kids all had a pasta dish. The desserts were also great. We love coming here on a weekend for lunch. A+++++

Went for the first time with friends just before christmas, 1st choice of food and desert all sold out which was a bit disappointing but my 2nd choice of chicken Kiev pitza was lovely. Came back last week and although the food was once again lovely and couldn’t fault it the menu was a bit confusing, when going for the midweek special lots from the main menus not included but could be added for an extra £2.50 meaning a happy hour special ends up being more By the time changes have been made.

Went in as a party of 4 for the Sunday lunch special at 4pm unfortunately it was sold out so we chose from the normal menu , food was piping hot , large portions , service was really good - all in all Great Value for Money , we will be back to try the Sunday Lunch .

My partner and I were heading out for lunch and there was a lot of traffic, this was on our way so we ended up stopping here instead and were not disappointed. The staff were friendly, the service was good and most importantly the food was lovely! We both had pizzas and they were absolutely delicious I would recommend going here and will be stopping again. The price is fantastic for what you get as it was fairly cheap and we both really enjoyed our meals.

Went for first time on Friday lunchtime with our son and his wife. Very impressed. Meal, for what it cost was absolutely fine, staff attentive and pleasant without being obtrusive, got the balance right. No hesitation in recommending, and will call again.

Booked table for 11 & no one was disappointed. Definitely recommend the seafood especially the scallops. Bill was very reasonable. Couldn’t have been happier.

Called in with my in-laws for a late lunch meal.Incorrect order was promptly resolved with no fuss.I am not a desert fan but was recommended to have the milky bar cheesecake.... also not a fan of white chocolate, the only reason I wouldn’t recommend it would be because I want it all.One word ... Decided to go to a restaurant not we had not been to with are sister in law over from Italy.We had heard Sunniside was better than the Whickham so turned up on Tuesday at 7-55pm.There was only two people in when we entered but decided to stay anyway.Quickly shown to table traditional Italian decor.We all had starters and when two of us had finished the young waitress came to clear the table we told her to wait until we were all finished.The other two waitress sent her home soon after but there appeared to be upset we had decided to stay.Let me say the food was ok the service was terrible maybe because they had no customers but I would think that they would go the extra mile to give a good experience.Its had to judge the place overall because of lack of atmosphere and poor service.Food was ok but nothing to make me want to give it another visit.

We eat here regularly and went again last night and it was a nice welcome, great food and all round great service. Even though the restaurant was busy (and often is) the service never deteriorates and its always good. The food is always fresh and hot and we have never had a bad experience. Its so reasonable for what you get even when it’s outside of happy hour.

I stay in the area on business during the week and thought it was about time I had dinner here.Chose the £9.95 three course dinner and was very impressed.The home made chicken liver pate was excellent served with a cherry jam (Gelee if you’re posh!) and griddle toast.You can choose any pizza or pasta and I chose spaghetti carbonara which was very tasty with a smoked ham taste.Third course was ice cream or coffee. I chose the ice cream.The decor is traditional Italian trattoria with red and white checked table cloths. Simple and well organised with a variety of flexible table sizes for larger or smaller parties.The restaurant was around half full which was quite good for a Thursday.Staff were friendly and efficient. I was served by a young Rick Astley who I assume is a relation of the owners.Improvements : the car park at the rear is small yet I got a space. And I’d probably update the entrance porch as it doesn’t do the rest of the restaurant justice and first impressions count! (which is why I started my review with the food and not the entrance porch!)Overall, very good. I will be back.

After having heard many good reports about Oli & Joe’s at Sunniside , I finally visited for lunch today and was not disappointed . A friendly welcome confirmed that I had made the right decision . After having ordered my wine I was given plenty of time to choose my meal from the lunch special at an amazing price of £6.95 .Once I had decided on my meal it was quickly served and was just what I needed . The food was very good and , accompanied by the very acceptable house red wine and efficient service , certainly made my visit worthwhile .I would certainly recommend this restaurant and will return soon .

Called in at Sunniside restaurant for lunch with a friend, her grandson and my son, and we were all very impressed by the food and service. I had pollo crema which was delicious, with chips, which were lovely and a garlic bread which we shared. The boys had pizzas - one of which was a child's size and it was more than enough for 7yr old and my friend had chicken kiev which she said was very nice. Staff were chatty and very friendly, all in all a very pleasant visit and will be back !

Went here with our grandkids not good at all. Pizzas were not at all nice and the waitress would have cracked her face if she smiled. I think she thought she was doing us a favour by eating there. It was much better when it was La Vera will not be going back.

Reviewed the O&J in Whickham but when asked the grandaughters said they wanted to come to this one. Why not? This chain presents good food at a great price but what works for them so well is that they open early. If you've got young kids, that need to be in bed then you need to eat about 5pm. All boxes ticked...and the kids get lollies too.

Visited for the first time today and couldn't fault the place. We went for the special menu with the additional cost for a steak. It was cooked perfectly and was one of the most enjoyable meals I've had in a long time. We will definitely be back.

We are regular visitors and I can honestly say we have never once left disappointed (family of 4). All the meals were beautiful. Arrabiata sirloin steak with vegetables was one of the nicest meals I have ever had. The service as always was 5 star. Fast and friendly with nothing being a problem.

Popped into this restaurant for a late lunch with the family. The food was excellent and the service warm and friendly. The portions are generous, and you can tell the ingredients are fresh. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We just called for tea as we were passing, we were seated quickly although the place was busy! The food was perfect, tasty, and very reasonably priced, The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, we received the best customer service that I have had in a long time, I am absolutely blown away by it, quick, friendly and polite! We pass this place about once a week for work, and we will definitely be returning! Very well done

Having been 3 times to the Whicham O and J's , I must say I prefer this one. Nicer surroundings and more cozier . Food on par to the other restaurant

This is my local Italian restaurant and always my first choice when it comes to dining out nearby! The range of food on offer is wonderful and it is never unreasonably priced with a lot of special offers on during the day! A definite must for Sunniside locals and people visiting.

After a very warm welcome our drinks order was taken promptly. The usual Italian menu, but with some very tempting specials such as swordfish. Opting for our favourites and choosing from the specials menu, we enjoyed prawn cocktail, potato skins, minestrone soup and bread sticks - all decent portion sizes and tasty too. Quickly polished off and ready for our mains, the pizzas were good choices, my dad and I self-split our pizza and pasta but that's just what we like to do, I'm sure the kitchen would have done that for us!! Kids meals were great value and decent portions too. Very friendly and welcoming place.

A solid Italian restaurant in the local area of Sunniside. Had half pizza half pasta - was very good for its cheap price. Furthermore, I nailed a delicious sticky toffee pudding towards the end of my meal which topped off my visit. Definitely recommend heading here.

We visited here for our lunch and had a three course meal from the £6.95 menu.Each course was delicious,ample and very well presented.The staff are lovely and helpful and this is a truly wonderful place.A definite ten out of ten in every way and we will 100% be back.

I would highly recommend this restaurant. It is such great value for money and the food is always great. I got potato skins to start and a steak cooked perfectly followed by ice cream with sauce. My partner got garlic bread with cheese (a personal favourite and possibly the best I’ve ever had) followed by pasta oil. The food cane quickly with great service as always. I could not recommend this place highly enough

We dined on the dinnertime special 3 courses for £6.95.Now this in itself is great value but after having a starter of potato skins, my wife had brusheta (apologies for spelling).Can only describe as a hearty portion in their own right.I went for calzone and my wife pepperoni and garlic.Quick service and food as good as anywhere I've ever tried.Unfortunately after two courses we both couldn't manage a desert but the bill of under £20 with a soft drink each means quality for takeaway money. Will definitely return again to this little diamond

Came here for dinner Saturday night and it was busy but not rammed with people. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of choice for gluten free options on the menu - they had gluten free pizza and pasta, as well as a range of risotto, chicken, steak, fish dishes.I had the gluten free meat mix pizza and it was honestly one of the best pizzas ice had in a long time.

We decided for a change to book a table at the sunniside oli & joe,s restaurant as we have been to the whickham restaurant on many occasion,s and have always enjoyed the meals.The first thing we noticed was it was a lot bigger and with there been 6 of us we ended up getting a really good table which was situated in a alcove.We found the staff very friendly and attentive and we were served very quickly.Three of our company opted for the sunday roast from the special menu for £9 95 per person and i went for a pasta which was very tasty but the portion could of been bigger .We noticed the special,s were £2 dearer than the specials in whickham but still the meals were all tasty so we did not mind the paying the difference .Overall we would definitely go again.

We eat here regularly and went again last night. The food is always great regardless of whether we have the usual menu or the chefs special menu. Always a friendly welcome off the girls and the other waiting staff. Excellent food, fast service and prices so reasonable.

Quiet night in the gaff, food was lush, drinks were mentally priced, service was brill! Nice staff, nice food, cheaper drinks would be sound but hey you can't have it all.Defo worth a visit but they need to promote the place better and encourage the locals to go £9.95 for 2 courses is cheap as chips but not as cheap as sorella sorella down the road! I hate it when you go for a cheap lunch at a mediocre place such as this and the add ons inflate the price to a similar level that a much more refined place would charge. £6.95 for three courses. I suppose that’s what should have put me off. You can’t serve decent food and turn a profit charging that per head. Potato skins or bruschetta. Spuds and bread basically. May as well have put ‘plate of white rice’ as a starter. I should have known better. Ordered steak asked for it rare. Extra £4.00- ok fair enough. It came well done, absolutely 100% overcooked. My partner ordered Calzone, bolognese sauce - extra £1.50. The minestrone soup tasted like ketchup, but the biggest kick was £4.50 for a beer. So the £6.95 lunch quickly turns into £30. Add to that the depressing working mans club like decor, basically an empty painted up ex pub, the same Adele song played over and over again,and you get the picture. The girl serving was decent enough given the material she has to work with, and the chips were nice but if you want quality grub in a rustic (dare I say Italian) atmosphere , hit Francesca’s in jesmond.Now that I don’t mind paying for.This may appeal to the older local ladies who lunch clique but it wasn’t for me- sorry.I should have complained about my steak to be honest, but I just though it wouldn’t get me anywhere, and by then I had made my mind up that I wasn’t coming back.

I had been told to try this establishment by some friends and had the opportunity to try it with a colleague. The staff are very friendly and the meals where brought very quickly. The food is delicious and ample with plenty of choice. Parking is behind the restaurant and will definitely use again.

Booked today for lunch, ordered potatoe skins and calzone pizza. The potatoe skins were either well done or warmed up from the previous night. The calzone pizza was undercooked without much filling, it was so tough, the waitress handed me a steak knife to cut it. First time and probably the last.

This is a great place to eat. We’ve been twice and both times the food was excellent. We’ve had pizza, surf and turf, chicken and pasta. All have been very, very tasty. The desserts too have tickled my sweet tongue. The environment is comfortable and the staff are friendly. We will definitely return!

I have eaten here many times over the years in its various incarnations as 'Casa Savoia', 'Santanas' and laterly Oli & Joes and I have never been disappointed. It is what it is and serves reasonable food in good size portions for a good price.

Booked for an early evening dinner with my mother-in-law and 2 small kids. The staff were brilliant from the start, helping us keep our daughter entertained and chatting to us. They made the evening really special for my mother-in-law whose birthday it was. The food was really nice and the atmosphere friendly and inviting. I live down the road but this was my first visit and I will definitely be back. I highly recommend for the lovely, family friendly atmosphere.

We eat here often and the food is always spot on! Great service, great atmosphere, great place! Will of course be returning!

The restaurant itself is decent enough, in a convenient place for most residents. Waitresses friendly, waiter not so much, the one who served us was rude and impatient pulling faces when waiting to pour our wine, was weird.Food very expensive for what you get, I had half pizza and half pasta, both bland, pasta over cooked, which is a bug bear of mine in an ‘Italian’ restaurant. Friends thought their food was extremely garlicky. For four mains and four drinks the bill was £100...it’s the type of food you’d get in a cheap Italian and for half the price might not mind but it was very steep considering quality and service. Sorella is a better shout.

My first visit yesterday for Sunday lunch & my first impression was great.... The staff were very attentive & friendly & are a credit to you.... Good quality & well presented piping hot food, Your prosecco was lubbly jubbly.... Excellent service & good value for money....Very impressed & will definitely make a return visit! :)
