My husband and I popped in for lunch as we had seen the great reviews. We weren’t disappointed. The restaurant is a charming comfortable place with very friendly staff I had the cod and chips which was very tasty and well presented. My husband had the plaice and a chips which he enjoyed too I would definitely return if in the area again.

Excellent Fish ‘n Chips: 2x Cod, 1x lge. Chips - if we’re out this way again we’d have med. Chips instead as there was too much. Great taste: fish & batter, well cooked (to order so there was a little wait but it’s better for them and us). Really friendly service, and they welcome / acknowledge every customer who walks in. We go Oldham's as we always greeted by staff as we walk in. Very friendly owner & his staff. We normally go lunchtime to see Leeanne the waitress but came along tonight. We had a lovely meal, good size cod. The only problem I have is the chips are so yummy, wherever I go I compare! Sometimes it nice to say thanks to this lovely fish & chip shop. They are customer service

Haven't been to Oldham's for a few years as it's an hour away from us. My parents asked where I fancied going for lunch to celebrate my 40th birthday and I said here! All four of us had a special on the £11 deal. Myself; salmon, cod and scampi, my husband; rock and cod, my mum; double haddock and my dad; skate and cod. All were cooked to perfection with light crispy batter and I'd forgotten how good the chips are! Super crispy and not at all greasy. The lunchtime deal is incredible value as it includes a drink and bread roll and butter too. Lovely friendly staff as always. So glad we visited today and we will return again in the summer with our toddler 😊

Fabulous fish and chip restaurant!! My 3 friends and I visited today for lunch and it was just perfect. It was a traditional small fish and chip restaurant which was separated by doors from the main cooking area, where obviously you could purchase takeaway. The waitress was so friendly and pleasant as were the staff cooking the food. The food was perfect (fantastic selection) and HOT hot chocolate, which you could also have with oat milk. A gentleman in front of me had a knickerbocker glory!!! Which looked gorgeous and took me back years to when we were younger. If I had had room for more food…. What a gem of a restaurant ❤️

Went there for my tea. Easy to see why this is among the top chippies in the town which has, by far, the most chippies in the country. Friendly service, well cooked fish and chips.

We hadn't booked and the restaurant was busy but we managed to get a table. We ordered plaice and chips as well as a roll and butter. The food was served pipping hot, however, the only problem was the fish batter was extremely oily

Lovely service, the lady (browny blonde hair) who served us was very smiley and was very helpful. The only small problem is that there isn’t gluten free options!

Their fish was as lovely as ever, but my problem was being overcharged. I didn't check prices at the time but looked at a pic of the interior that I'd taken on my way home. Haddock is £9, and the chips are £2.40. I was charged £16 which is £4.60 more than it should have been. I emailed them straight away on Friday afternoon, but they haven't bothered to reply. This is sad because I have always gone there when visiting Southend as their fish is the best.

Saw a previous review stating Oldhams served gluten free. They don't! All we were offered was poached salmon or a jacket potato. There is no gluten-free batter and they don't grill fish. If you want classic battered fish and chips but gluten free, go somewhere else.

Oldhams is a long established family run business, and it shows. A "proper" fish and chip shop/restaurant, serving a range of really nice (freshly fried) fish, with one or two "modern" extras ! Just as things used to be.

A great local business, serving up generous portions of food. Old fashioned charm, and good friendly service. Great value, especially on Monday evenings with a 2 for 1 deal. It makes a family meal out very affordable.

Wanted to try this place a few times when I've used palace theatre but it's always closed afterwards. Had a drive to try it out well worth it properly cooked fresh not frozen fish can't remember the last time i ate fish and the batter stayed crispy right to the last bite. Reasonably priced good portion size and very friendly helpful staff . If this was closer it would definitely be my regular.

Ok I had some business in Southend ,fancied fish a chips for lunch .I checked out trip advisor for a highly rated place and saw Oldham’s I was greeted by friendly staff I ordered haddock and chips takeaway It was cooked fresh presented in a box with knife and fork The portion size was perfect the chips were v good without being greasy But the (icing on the cake) for me was the fish cooked perfectly ,thin crispy batter and as fresh and tasty asI’ve had in a long time! If it was within a 15 min drive from my home I’d be a regular!!!!!

I think without exaggerating it is one of the best fish and chips I have ever tried. The homemade coleslaw is worth trying.

Never heard of this place until my brothers took me there today. A rather unassuming restaurant behind the main chip shop, nice and clean, good service and lovely fish! Good and reasonably priced drinks menu too. And what's the other sign of a good restaurant...clean toilets! Would go there again.

Revisited here for a takeaway after a previous bad experience (gravy issue). Once the previous problem was explained we were apologised to, well look after and the food back to it’s great standard. They know how to look after customers and will definitely be back again.

Great 'plaice' to take my elderly mother - so I thought - but her request for a fish in a bun served without chips and lettuce was met with a plate full of both. When she asked, again, for just the fish in a bun was met with 'you'll still have to pay for all of it '.Well, we did - so care with what you ask for at Oldham's as you will have to pay for a whole lot more.Nice fish in a bun however.

Went for midweek lunch. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, and gave information on the specials of the day that were not on the menu. The food was hot, tasty and fresh. The batter on the fish was not in the least bit oily, and it was lovely to have proper chips. The portions were very good, and the tea was hot. The restaurant was very clean and comfortable. We would definitely eat here again.

I'm surprised on the two occasions we have tried a meal from this establishment they have been pretty awful, very small, dried up portion of chips both visits and the previous visit we had a spring roll that looked like it had been sat on and it was burnt ... we phoned after on both occasions and the shop were willing to give you fresh food and did apologise but after reading such good reviews why has this happened both times??? Disappointed...

Usually just get a portion of chips before a visit to the palace theatre,but as it was cold,decided to get there early to eat in for the first time,we certainly were glad we did,lovely welcome as we walked in,waitress was lovely and friendly,great fish and chips cooked to perfection in a traditional style shop,will definately be back next time we are going to a show

I stumbled upon this place almost by accident. They did some unusual fish including something called Skate Knobs. Their fish was delicious and well cooked, it wasn't greasy and the portions were of a good size. I certainly will return here one day and eat again and the service we got was simply awesome. Friendly and non rushed and happy to chat with us. As we left the fryers waved and bid us a safe trip. If you want great traditional fish and chips then this is the place to go.

We regularly travel the 12 miles to Oldam's for fish & chips. Always a high standard, never found better. That said nothing surpasses the fish & chips when I was growing up in East London, fried in beef dripping, still can taste it now. Went to school with Dereck Oldam in the early 50's

Oldhams restaurant is a great restaurant /take away. There fish is so fresh every time with very large portion sizes. Also great value for money. My husband and I had cod and chips which comes with a salad garnish, he had a portion of mushy peas, I had a portion of coleslaw (which is more than enough for 2 people to share), and I had tea and he had a bottle of sparkling water and the bill came to just under 30.00, but we also included a tip. We always go here either before or after we have been to either the cliffs pavilion theatre or Palace theatre or when we go down to Southend for the day. You have to give it a try it's real traditional fish and chips served in a traditional restaurant.

Staff were friendly and welcoming, service was good but the food was just on par with other fish and chip restaurants that I have Visited, Maybe I was expecting better after reading rave reviews plus have friends that rave about it too. They have a meal deal before 5PM which we went for as was good value, maybe the full price version with a bigger piece of fish might have been a better option. Enjoyed my visit and the food was ok

I think this is a lovely venue with a great atmosphere and friendly vibe. I don’t mind the prices and the bathrooms are clean. Staff are friendly, too! Getting a taxi from there can be a pain, though.

No trip to the sea side is complete without a customary plate of good old fashioned F&C;.

Not all fish and chip shops are equal as well all know. Oldhams stands tall above the many others in the area and even though it is out of the way for me, I tend to favour them for my takeaway meals.

Another excellent meal in the restaurant. Fish is always exceptional and we were surprised to find that Mondays have a special offer. Great value even without the offer. Friendly staff. Try it!

Have been to this establishment many times over the years. There again today, chips hot not greasy, although standard fare, the steak and kidney pie was tasty. Have never had a bad experience, lovely grub.

We got a takeaway from Oldhams restaurant. The fish and chips were nice but a little pricey if I'm being honest. If I lived in Westcliff I probably would try somewhere else to compare but as a tourist on holiday it was fine for a one off meal.

We soften visit Southend-on-sea and we always call into Oldham's for a fish and chip lunch. There is always a good selection of fish and cooked to perfection. The staff are always pleased to see returning customer's and friendly and very helpful.. Looking forward to our next trip to Southend.

Lovely food, on a Monday night between 5 and 9 in the restaurant its buy one get one free main meal . Really good size portions great friendly staff as soon as you walk in the shop they make you feel welcome with a hello and a smile . Best chips in town. Not our local. We go there for the restaurant experience, and so expect to pay a little more than the usual takeaway, but get good quality every time so far. Skate knobs are a fav of my wife.

We were going to the Palace theatre nearby to see the Twirlywoos show with my 2 young sons. We needed to grab a bite to eat beforehand and this restaurant was very close by. I was a bit apprehensive eating out as my youngest is dairy intolerant but we all had a great lunch experience here and I can’t rate it highly enough!

Die Bedienung war super freundlich, lustig und schnell. Leider wurden Ketchup, Majo und Remoulade in kleinen Plastikbehältern (für 4 Personen 16 kleine Verpackungen) serviert, womit leider sehr viel unnötiger Müll entstand. Hier wären Flaschen besser.

I only ever visit when they are the only chip shop open. Both of my last two visits I've asked for no salt and vinegar on the kids chips, and ended up with salt and vinegar anyway.

Popped in for a quick bite ahead of seeing a show at The Palace Theatre today and was beyond impressed. Food was lovely, staff were very friendly and all very accommodating for children...pencil case full of colours, activity sheet and extra treats with the ice cream that made my little one very happy. Would definitely return.

We both had the lunchtime special at £8.50p which includes fish and chips,a drink and roll and butter. The fish is always fresh and very tasty and the chips are the best you will eat anywhere in Essex. The staff are all very pleasant and the place is always kept clean and tidy. I thoroughly recommend Oldhams to everyone.

Finding myself nearby mid afternoon I decided to eat at the unusual hour of 4. I chose the £8 afternoon special - cod & chips with salad trimmings, a drink and a very fresh roll with generous butter. Efficient pleasant service. All very good.

We have been to Oldhams quite a few times but thought I should write a review. It is consistently excellent the fish is so soft white and fresh, my wife had the skate knobs (cheeks) and chips I had the cod with chips and they also come with a small salad, the rolls are lovely and fresh and all the sauces are from Heinz. The staff are really efficient and cheerful, faultless once again.

popped into oldhams fish restaurant on the way home from shopping in Southend on sea, luckily for us it was a Monday just after 5 pm which entitled us to pick any 2 main fish courses for the price of 1, so we both chose from the £14 any two fish dishes served with salad and chips so we had 4 fish dishes 2 fries and salads for £14 excellent value good sized portions, [we had to take some home] we had cod pieces, scampi, squid, skate knobs, all very good hearty grub not at all greasy, freshly cooked to order lovely friendly waitress who seemed to be on first name terms with all the customers, i noticed as we left that the staff behind the take away counter were greeting the people in the Que by their christian names, what better recommendation can you get than ques of people on first name terms, excellent

Oldham fish and chips started 1967. Staff friendly and welcoming and knowledgeable. Fish is fished in substanable fishing grounds. Great quality fish , we had cod, one with batter and one steamed. Chips and mushy peas all piping hot. Hot tea and bread. Loved them.

£1.70 for a handful of poorly-cooked chips. This place wouldn't last 5 minutes north of Watford Gap.

Oldham’s fish restaurant is fantastic been going here for over 40 years the quality and size of the meals ( sit down ) or takeaway are amazing the flavour and taste is one of the best chippies around by far . Well done to all the staff and management for not reducing your standards .

This is definitely the best fish and chip restaurant in the Southend-on-Sea area. It is a long-established business. Takeaway or eat-in; you can’t go wrong. The fryers are experts, the fish is just perfect, and the chips are spot-on. It’s great value, and a local icon.

I had a wonderful take away this evening. Having had a negative experience at a nearby Fish n Chip place recently, I was a bit hesitant.

Lovely family meal as part of a day trip to the Essex coast. Children’s meals were excellent value and large portions. Fish was fresh and well cooked. Restaurant is not fancy in any way but clean and with good service.

The food, service and restaurant is a very high standard. The menu is extensive. The skate knobs were a mystery but delicious.

I can remember Oldhams from my childhood. It stood as a Beacon of old-fashioned comfort on the junction opposite the Plough. It was all about family: family run, family values.
