Oldfields Fish & Chips in South Gloucestershire

Food was ok, not great just ok, tasted a little bland, microwaved pie, soggy overcooked fish, not very hot, quick service but the real issue is the staff having their own conversations going and customers feeling like they're in the way, 2nd time I've been in in 6 months, now I remember why. Young staff working in the "plaice" now (sorry), nothing wrong in that but they do need to converse more with their customers in a meet and greet aspect (and not leave people standing there) and not just with each other. I tried twice this year but I don't think I'll be back for a third

Fish cakes are absolutely amazing! Best fishcake I’ve ever had! Chips are really tasty too i think this will be my go too chippy from now on!

The service is always great but 3 out of 5 lots of chips are going to be naff. We had some last night and 4 of us agreed that they were to bad to eat. Unless you get lucky with a fresh batch, they are usually old chips or oil.

Can't beat this place for freshness and taste of fish generous portions of chips. Won't go anywhere else gor this treat.

Just bought fish and chips, just grease, undercooked soggy chips in the bin now, fish had horrible skin on , would never buy there again what a waste of money ! Gross

Ordered a takeaway to be delivered. All I can say is it was only just edible. Anaemic chips and greasy fish. I wouldn’t bother if I were you.

There was not a long wait to get served.

Chips are the worst around. Thought I'd try one more time last night and although good portion size and being hot, they were hard and chewy. Either old chips or poor quality potatoes perhaps. Need to remember to keep driving.

Great customer service great food

Used to love this place. However since young people run it that have no customer service skills its gone down hill. They sold my mum gone off fish, and got nasty with me when i politely went in to say it was gone off. Won’t be going back!

Food is great but the queuing system is a disaster 🤣

I had sausage and chips, the chips were OK but too many for me personally and the batter on my sausage was hardly crispy at all , more soggy. Sausage was ok though. Service was fine and there are lots of specials to try.

It used to be a great place to get traditional fish & chips. However, the last 3 times I have been, the quality of food has been well below par, and the service is diabolical. Unless this place changes ownership or has a massive improvement, I will not be returning, utter waste of money. 😡

Glacially slow service but food's OK when you get it. Lots of staff talking to each other or servicing phone orders rather than serving people waiting. Fast food this is not...

Been twice after returning from holiday. Wife and I really enjoyed our food.

Apart from one young male server, staff are friendly here. The lad just makes you feel unwelcome. Fish, chips & battered sausage delicious. Batter superb; make sure you ask for a bag of 'scrumps' !

Really unpleasant batter on a large cod. Behind the counter looked very messy . Chips on floor , lack of cleaning . just a total lack of pride. first and last time .

Food was nice, but quite pricey compared to other local chip shops. No other customer during my visit, but took a little longer than expected as there was no curry sauce ready. Small amount of parking on site

Chips were yummy the best since Waterhouses, village between Macclesfield and leek.

I’ve just picked up chicken and chips, not only was it pretty expensive nearly £11, it’s absolutely mired in grease and certainly doesn’t look like the photos. Very disappointing

Lovely food everything fresh cooked whilst you wait.

On Thursday this week , I telephoned Oldfields , High Street , Oldland Common & deposited an amount so my friend & her husband could enjoy a proper fish & chip supper .to celebrate her birthday . The young chap I spoke to was so polite & courteous & took my payment & I said I would tell my friend to ring & order . I just received a message to say they enjoyed the best fish & chips they had ever had . Her husband is on dialysis 3 times a week so doesn’t have much of an appetite & usually has veg . He enjoyed his so much too . I extend my thanks again to Oldfields for their customer service & friendliness , x J M Clare

Lovely traditional fish and chip shop, I had a double chicken burger and it was delicious. Staff are lovely and it’s really clean, quick and efficient with the service too. Highly recommend.

Staff are rude, ignorant and disrespectful to customers. Stood in queue for almost 20 minutes, waiting my turn, staff ignored me as if i wasn't there despite me standing in front of the counter, they start serving other people who literally just stepped in the door. Left with no food, not coming back. 0/10 avoid.

Nice grub, opens 11.30am all through till late.

Portions were large. But cost a bit more. But when you see the larger portions it's worth it. Staff were a little slow, but was unsure if they were new. So nothing really to complain about, as everyone has to start sometime and learn.

Ordered plaice and chips waited for it to be cooked, when I got it home was astonished that it had turned into cod!! Surely it’s not that difficult to identify different types of fish. I don’t like cod but my cats thought it was xmas they enjoyed it very much

Cold gravy, cold chips. Faggots had to wait for, hard as a brick almost. Must of got them out of the freezer and warmed them up in the microwave for a minute. Absolute disgrace! I'd give no stars if I could!

Staff are poorly motivated and standoffish. I was initially rebuffed from ordering basic and common menu items more than an hour before closing, I had to be quite forceful to actually have them cook items from the menu. Gives a very poor impression.

Mostly good but the most inefficiency run and overstaffed chippie. The young staff don't generally give a stuff.

Bought a bag of chips today ,they were inedible, cold and hard ,tasted like yesterdays ,had to thow them in the bin. Used to be nice ,won't go back again .

Really nice fish cake and the chips to die for..

Pretty much bang on chippy: these chips absorb vinegar as opposed to a few other places where the chips are basically hydrophobic- leaving a puddle of vinegar at the bottom. These were excellent chips! Sausages were hit and miss, mine was great but my wife's looked too brown on the inside which put her off considering mine wasn't. Curry sauce was spot on too.

Best fish n chips around. Good value for money. Lovely friendly staff.

Cracking plentiful fish or chicken and chips

Has gone downhill over last few months, not sure what has changed. Gone are those lovely crispy but moist chips. Batter on fish soggy. Such a shame as was previously so good.

Website states 10.30pm shut. However I'm here at 21.59 and they're shut. I've just worked a 12hr shift as a carer and was looking forward to food

Well we moved out of Oldland common 3 yrs ago after living their for 15yrs. This was our regular chip shop over the years and never has a bad meal. So we as a family thought we would try it tonite.OMG we drove 4 miles for the what can only be described as soggy fish with no batter, soggy chips, the whole thing jammed in a box all stuck together. Wow how this has gone downhill. Will not be back there again.

Absolute joke. I phoned and ordered and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I went to collect my order and had to wait in a queue of 14 people. After 15 minutes I went home without getting my order. I phoned and asked what was the point of a ordering system if you can't collect it , and explained that I was in the queue for 15 minutes waiting in this time 4 people got served. Still leaving 10 in front of me , I was told that you order your food so that it is cooked for you so you don't have to wait in the shop. Again I questioned the logic , and I was told , just because you order you food you still have to wait in the queue , otherwise it looks like you are jumping the queue. I would of waited a good 30 minutes in the queue for food that was cooked at least 30 minutes before. No point in offering a ordering service. Just wait in the queue. I can safely say that oldfields will not be getting my custom in future.

Excellent as usual had my favourite battered sausage chips and curry sauce 10/10.

Most times perfect I like waiting for mine to be cooked.

The young girl that served me was so rude and had a terrible attitude. Rolled her eyes when I asked if I could have a fork. The grease was leaking from the box and wasn't given a bag so it went everywhere. The portion of fish was very small considering the price. I won't come back to this one, the one in Longwell Green is so much better.

Curry sauce and chips are the best

Staff are doing a cracking job in exceptional circumstances (covid-19/social distancing). They deserve a bonus and / or pay rise!

Fantastic fish and chips, great service at all branches. I have used them all over the years. I have not tried the Sunday lunch but I am sure that it is very good.

Really friendly staff, very good customer service. Chips are fantastic and a wide selection of choice. Only complaint is the Peters pies aren't great

Takes absolutely forever to receive your order via delivery. Every time we order we have to phone twice and it's usually 2 hours or so before we have the food. If you can't deliver to the area or don't have enough drivers, don't take the orders.

All Lukewarm at 1630 to much pre cooked

Friendly service and pretty nice chips. It's good that u can now sit inside and munch. A couple of outside tables would be nice as well. I agree that some staff need to be aware of food hygiene though - although not particularly recent, on one occasion a member of staff picked my onion rings up with her bare hands - no gloves or tongs - which was a bit off-putting. But not as off-putting as the time a chap in a local chippie (not Oldfield's) sneezed all over my chips, smiled and gave them to me! Perhaps more food hygiene training is needed in chip shops in general.
