One of the best pub lunches we’ve ever had. Which covers many decades. A simple beef burger, not described in fancy terms but better than so many gastro-pubs that do so. Really good chips, and the coleslaw was crisp and fresh. And a really excellent lamb roast with very well-cooked and plentiful vegetables. Service was a match for the food. I could see all the waiters were very good though ours (dark hair, longer beard) had a good way about him. Exceptional. Worth a detour or a special visit.

Located in the heart of the old part of Hemel Hempstead, this historic pub is a great place to stay. The room was a good size, comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was excellent and Michelle, the weekday host was very efficient and friendly. Highly recommended.

We walked into the pub, there was one person sitting at a table with a pint and a newspaper and no visible bar staff, we waited 4 minutes and no one appeared. I then said to my partner if I had to wait a full 5 minutes I was leaving. He then called out to see if anyone was about. A short while later a man appeared and did apologise for the wait. We ordered drinks and asked for a lunch menu, my partner ordered hunters chicken and chips and I ordered the ploughman’s. We waited in the garden for our food and it was about half an hour and I thought that was reasonable as we really weren’t in a hurry. I’m going to say that my partner was happy enough with his food but mine was such a disappointment. Having a particular liking for a chunky piece of cheese and a few pickles I was really looking forward to it. The ham I wasn’t too bothered with but I would have preferred a nice thick slice of ham but that wasn’t the issue, I was presented with 2 square slices of cheese from a packet! It was shocking that this was even considered ok. The egg had a mark in it so I wouldn’t even touch it. It was clearly visible so why another egg wasn’t provided I have no idea. Upon reading the menu description prior to doing this review I realised an apple wasn’t even provided with no mention of it not being available at the time. I’d have complained but we never saw another member of staff the whole time we were there. All in all apart from my partners dinner being ok it was a really disappointing visit. I probably wouldn’t go back.

On checking in i was told there was no breakfast as the “ chef did not arrive for work “Even though this was saturday afternoon & breakfast service was for sunday morning there was no prior warning .At the bar, I was promptly handed a cash refund for the cost of a breakfast of £7.00 per person with no further explanation & I was not sure how the calculation was reached as it was included in the room stay I did not challenge the member of staff at that time who handed me the room key as he was also serving in the bar & as I was on a tight schedule to meet our friends & continue with our weekend there was no earlier check-in available unless you were happy to pay an additional £10.00 to check in at 1pm I was also given a note with someone's number on "If the fire alarm goes off can you ring which was a bit worrying On our return later that evening after an enjoyable evening with friends, we had to let ourselves in at a side door as the pub was locked up & in darkness even though it is advertised that it is open until 12.00 on Saturdays & no duty manager or staff member was on site So we decided to retire for the night & speak to someone in the morning on checking out at 10.00 the pub was still not open a locked up just as the previous night so no one was on site I only noticed a plastic box on the wall with a key drop so we left the keys & departed still with unable to speak to either a member of staff or a duty manager As to the room number 8 that we were allocated this was far from satisfactory It was dirty , dusty, mould in the shower & felt as if housekeeping had not touched it I have previously sent a personal e-mail through their website to the general manager Brett Child which has not been acknowledged this has now been 3 days asking for his feedback,This was our second stay at the Olde Kings Arms in Hemel Hempstead & It could not have been more different as we visit our friends a couple of times a year & are happy to pay for decent clean accommodation locally next time It certainly will not be the Olde Kings Arms in Hemel Hempstead & I suggest anyone else looking to stay locally in the area do not consider this establishment unless they make vast improvements

We stayed at The Olde Kings Arms for two nights and enjoyed our stay. Let’s get the not so good out of the way first, not that there’s much that wasn’t good. We had a little trouble finding where to check in as there isn’t any signage to tell you where to go, you need to go into the pub and ask at the bar. Once in the room I felt that there needed to be some sort of instructions on how to use the shower, unfortunately I got a bit wet trying to figure it out for my daughter whilst still fully clothed. The light fitting that hangs outside of the bathroom door is a bit low and you do need to be careful not to hit it with the door, it could easily break the light bulb. It would be nice if there was room service available during dinner service or the ability to order and takeout to your room to eat. The selection of teas in the room is excellent but the coffee was not good, very bitter and poor quality. On the plus side all of the staff were lovely, very friendly and polite, special acknowledgment to Michelle in the breakfast room and I believe his name is Matt who checked us in who were both incredibly accommodating and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable, the air conditioning was extremely efficient and very welcome as the nights were very humid while we were there. Breakfast was excellent and fantastically cooked, I had the full English on the first morning and everything was fabulous, there was an incredible amount of food on my plate and it was delicious. I would liked to have seen some fresh fruit available on the breakfast bar along side the cereals. We ate in the pub on our first night having the fish and chips, it all tasted good but personally I would have liked the batter to be a little crispier. Over all we had a lovely two nights at The Olde Kings Arms and will definitely look to stay again when we are next in the area.

The olde kings arms is my favourite pub in Hemel Hempstead. Its our local, it never disappoints. I regularly visit for their good old English breakfast in the morning along with my dog. (Bonus pounts for being dog friendly) My husband and I really enjoy the fantastic menu. We often visit and like to order the platters. The staff are always friendly, welcoming and attentive. The history of the building is documented and well laid out throughout the building. There is also a lovely enclosed patio garden area, great for a drink in the sun. Total credit to the chef and the staff here, keep up the great work!

This splendid very old timbered coaching inn is situated in the high street opposite the old town hall that now serves as an entertainment venue. OKH offers comfortable accommodation, restaurant and bars with an outdoor patio / garden. My daughter and I stayed for one night arriving late Friday evening and departing Saturday morning. Both evening meal and breakfast were excellent and service faultless with the breakfast lady particularly attentive with a most friendly and hospitable nature. Our rooms were very clean , comfortable with the usual tea/ coffee / kettle facilities you would expect. The shower was immensely powerful and the actual shower ‘cubicle ‘ / space was generous. Crisp fluffy white towels and with the option of AC makes this a very enjoyable place to stay

I arrived with my parents for a one night stay as we were visiting the Harry Potter Studio tour. We were instantly met with smiling friendly staff. The we had booked a family room (for 3 adults) we werent too bothered about sharing as we were just using it as a base, however, we entered our room to be blown away - we had a suite - huge bed in one area, ensuite, tea/coffee making area with a fridge, sofa and seating area then a seperate bed room with a double and single bed in it! Add to that all the original beams and features, the wonderful history of the place and the fab breakfast in the morning - you cannot go wrong. We didnt get chance to make the most of the stunning little old town due to storm Ciara so we just grabbed a table in the pub down stairs and had some excellent food and a few glasses of vino - all in all it was a brilliant weekend. Around a 10/15 minute drive to the Studios too which was perfect. Parking is available on a council carpark about 1 minute walk away from the accomodation and is charged at very reasonable rates. Highly recommend stay - Thanks!

Took husband and daughter out for food last Sunday. Hubby had the Roast Beef - beautifully cooked (he can be fussy with his beef) and plenty of it. Extra gravy was provided upon request. Daughter had the chicken which again, was plentiful and she thoroughly enjoyed it along with her side order of Cauliflower Cheese which for one person was huge! I had the Nut Roast. Having tried a very unappetising Nut Roast many years ago at a different establishment, I was slightly apprehensive. However, no need whatsoever! The flavours were amazing and it was very moist. I would certainly have it again. The staff were lovely and attentive without being intrusive. I will look forward to our next visti.

Last visited the pub over 30 years ago when I was at school in the town. Booked a room and also a table for an overnight stay. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed and when we arrived just before nine o'clock, my wife was told that the kitchen had already closed. The staff were friendly on check-in and the breakfast was very good, with friendly staff. Also, for one time in the UK, a good cup of coffee with breakfast.

We booked a two night stay for my fourtieth birthday, we were visiting the Warner Bros studio on Sunday so wanted somewhere close to travel from. Saturday hit 30+ degrees so the air conditioning in the room was a life saver! We were cold in there at one point, really great to have. Being above a pub we were expecting it to be noisy and it wasn't, it was very quiet and we had a great night's sleep. At breakfast we were greeted by a lovely lady and treated to a really tasty breakfast, chef cooks a mean poached egg! Sunday breakfast was also great. We were sat a party in Berkhamstead and were going to stay the night here before taking our time travelling back to The Midlands. The room was small, my wife couldn`t hang clothes in the wardrobe as it smelled of damp. ( see photos) The shower had mould in it, the toilet needed cleaning, the bedside lamp didn`t work, the mattress was poor on a small bed. A chap came to clean the toilet and poured bleach down it as my wife was cleaning her teeth ! Parking is " difficult " given that it is a small car park and signage is poor. I had a pint before we left and that was ok. We left, deciding to travel back that evening and the only good thing I can say is that we got a full refund. Someone was going to phone me to discuss the problems we faced but he hasn`t.

Just returned from 3 days stay. On arrival check in was OK, but noticed when shown to the room, although beds were made, the room had not been cleaned, fluff dirt and bits all over the carpet. First day of our stay, beds were not made, and room never cleaned the whole stay. Well situated to walk into town, but Hemel Hempstead has nothing to offer, but could be used as a base. Good choice of breakfast, well cooked. Our room was ground floor, opposite a block of flats, you get the noise from cars coming and going all hours. The bathroom was actually a wet room and when you had a shower the whole floor was flooded, and remained wet. Although £70 a night seems the local going rate I feel it is expensive for basic accommodation.

Lovely Bed and breakfast, room at back of property very quiet. Very convenient for walking into town. Breakfast nice although a little slow in serving it.

New to the area and looking for somewhere to have a Sunday lunch, I decided to look at trip advisor for advice.I was already stood in another local pub and didn't really like the look of the roast that I could see.I don't really like to see pre cooked meat cut with a meat slicer! So I decided to give the Kings arms a go glad I did! Good quality roast lovely veg and very pleasant bar man.If I did have a criticism it would be that I like beef rare but understand that they have to cater for the greater audience.

One night in Hemel, a town we don't know at all, but there to join friends in a reunion. On arrival greeted by Stephen at the bar, who took us to our room and then provided detailed instructions so we could park at the rear of the inn, from the front a drive on the one way system of only 2 miles, or so it seemed. That apart, good night's sleep, powerful shower and a full English breakfast including gluten free toast prepared by Elliot and served by Stephen.

On arrival and after checking in we were taken to our room by Elliot the manager. This has never been offered to us before in a hotel, it's always been here's your key you are in room ?? go straight down there and turn left etc.. We felt so welcome. The room was lovely, and although modern with the furniture etc. we felt as if we had stepped back into a little bit of history. The location is brilliant and if you need any tip's about the area talk to Steve the barman he is very friendly. We will definitely stay here again.

The hotel and restaurant is a pearl in Hemel Hempsted, it is located in the centre of the old town. The service is outstanding, Elliot and his team really get you to feel that you are at home. We stayed in the Hotel three times during a long European trip and each time we left luggage at the Hotel and every time we came back it was already in the room. The food is also very good, English as it's best and the Sunday roast was delicious, for sure we will come back next time in England.

This is a lovley pub with friendly staff, nice atmosphere and great food! If you are visiting the Harry Pottet studios like we did it is an ideal place to stay. We paid £50 for night and this included a yummy breakfast. It's a 15 minute drive to the studios and they have parking out the back. Rooms were clean and have everything you need and the pub is a great place to relax - there are a few others along the street if you like that kind of thing :) I would recommend staying here over the more expensive hotels as you get a warm welcome and it has everything you need for half the price! If we found our self over this way in the future we would stay again.

Main courses freshly cooked and served in a delightfully beamed small eating area with a historical fire. Really enjoyed the food. We all had 3 courses and the Malbec to accompany was lovely. Informal but very professional service simply served. Once you've eaten you've git the table for the evening or you can go into the comfy bar area. Starters £5, mains £9/10, deserts £5.

I have been to lunch at this pub several time, then to a wedding reception and, recently, a party! They have all been excellent. The staff are friendly and seem to care about the customers. The service was fairly slow at lunch time, but the food worth waiting for.

Lovely looking pub. Went in for some lunch. A table of 4 in the bar and a further 8 in the back restaurant. Was ignored by barmaid who was delivering food a plate at a time to the table of 8. Negative feedback from them too. I waited and waited then gave up. If you open at lunchtime make sure you can cope

Visited 4th October, great atmosphere. Restaurant has been refurbished and staff very friendly. Food was amazing I had the fish and chips with minted peas and my friend had the homemade cheese and bacon burger with hand cut chips. Will definitely be back again soon with my fiance as there are so many other delicious meals to try.

We stayed at The Olde Kings Arms after visiting the Harry Potter Warner Bros tour. The hotel is not far away at all and easily found with a Sat Nav.Located in the ‘Old High Street’ of Hemel Hempstead, surrounded by lovely shops, restaurants and quaint medieval English cottages, The Olde Kings Arms really is a lovely location, and is the best presented pub/guest house on the street. We only paid £50 a night and stayed for 2 nights. Our room was lovely and modern with a television, tea/coffee making facilities and a very nice modern bathroom. Whilst simple and basic in design, it was clean and tidy and more than suited our needs.Price includes breakfast in the morning. We enjoyed a lovely full English on both days, presented and cooked very well, accompanied by fresh coffee & juice. You eat downstairs in the restaurant/pub (The Olde Kings Arms is both a guest house and pub) and this is more ‘Olde English’ themed and very nice. Whilst we didn’t have a meal there, the evening menu looked very good! The owner was also a very nice chap, extremely friendly and helpful, let us borrow his laptop to check train times, offered to call us taxis and asked if we wanted anything when he visited the local shop! The Olde Kings Arms truly was a lovely little hotel and I’d stay again. There is also a bus stop a five minute walk away that takes you straight to London Victoria for £16 return (but doesn’t operate on Sundays). Worth bearing in mind if you wanted to visit London without having to pay the astronomical prices of staying in the capital overnight.

I stayed just for one night but was pleasantly surprised by the value for money experience I had. I paid £50 for the room and it included breakfast (which was delicious). The room itself was comfortable, had everything I needed with a small but surprisingly well equipped bathroom - the shower being the best part. In addition the staff were both polite and very helpful.

This was a rushed decision, one which I thought was simply going to satisfy the need to eat...how wrong I was!Once we had made the difficult choice off the traditional, but lovely sounding menu, we expressed our time limit and the excellent waiter stated everything was cooked from fresh so couldn't be any quicker, however it was worth the modest 15-20 minute wait. I had the chicken pie, and my partner had the burger... both looked impressive when they arrived and tasted excellent too! The oily mash took a bit of getting used to but was actually very yummy! Service was excellent and he understood that we had to rush off and catered to this. For what we received the price was excellent!! Highly recommend!!!

Called in on a Friday night with family, they were friendly and accommodating as we have some fussy eaters. We're willing to offer off-menu dishes and quality was great. Very attentive to us but not intrusive. We had a good time and will return.

Was looking at the resturants in the old town and took a wonder down the road for a drink one pub stood out as somewhere where We wouldn't stick too the floor or be mauled by children, was the olde kings arms, a lovely building with a lot of character, We saw the food menu as we entered and decided to give it a go in the brilliant resturant area we started of with shell on garlic tiger prawns and a prawn cocktail and for a main I had the fillet steak and my wife had the crayfish salad and it's one of the best meals I've had in a long long time the atmosphere was fine with nice background music but could do with being a little busier but with food like this I'd imagine it won't be long have recommended it to all our friends and they also have live entertainment on the weekends and 8 guest rooms.

Arrived rather early in Hemel for dinner so popped into this pub for a quick drink. It was ghastly. I was the only female for quite a while. It was full of rough foul mouthed men and I wondered if we had wandered into a gay pub as one particular man kept winking at my husband. I can't think of anything positive to say about this pub, the table we sat on was sticky, not a place for couples. Needless to say we won't be returning.

Absolutely delicious chippy. I had the chicken nuggets and chips. The nuggets were proper hunks of chicken. The chips were a generous portion with the perfect mix of crunchy bits and fluffy chips, perfectly cooked
