Authentic Taiwanese cuisine. Highly recommend.

Being in a foreign land, I could eat authentic Taiwanese food, meet a chatty boss, and feel warm.

It was my first time traveling to London and I dined at Laoshu Taiwanese Restaurant in Chinatown. I ordered salty crispy chicken and braised pork rice, sesame oil chicken noodles, three-cup chicken, dry lentils and salt-and-pepper fried tofu. The taste was very good. Super delicious and really happy. Big recommendation!

Super affordable and for the price paid it’s definitely worth popping in for some noodles or snacks. We loved the fried salty and pepper squid! Only advice for improvement is that when I went to their toilet which was in their kitchen, it seemed a bit messy.

The fried chicken and pork rice were very nice, however the portions of the noodles and rice were too small (both the small and large bowls).

Good service The pork chop with rice was a bit dry, but the braised pork rice and braised egg were quite delicious. The salty crispy chicken tastes better than the fried pork ribs. Doesn’t feel Taiwanese Many people order noodles, which may be more Taiwanese-style.

The atmosphere and service was unfortunately better than the food. The noodles were too soft, almost mushy, and the oyster omelette had too much starch in it. Radish cake needed seasoning.

I'm Taiwanese but I missed home, and I thought it was lucky we came across the restaurant. The food was quite tasty, but service was really, really horrible. The waitress was bitchy when we didn't want more food, and when I went downstairs to the bathroom, there was another lady there was ranting about me and cussing me out to workers there. C'mon man, we're customers, we deserve the least modicum of respect. Honestly I typically try to support Taiwanese restaurants as much as I can when I'm not in Taiwan, but this was an absolute disappointment. I don't recommend it here. Also, be ware of hidden costs.

A friend from Hong Kong recommended that we go there. We ordered beef noodles and oyster thin noodles. The food was delicious, great broth, which makes us really want to visit Taiwan. I checked Google reviews, and while some mentioned rude staff and no card payments, we found the staff friendly. They now accept card payments, though cash and bank transfers are still options.

Nothing to rave about but also nothing to hate on. A simple restaurant with Taiwanese food. Restaurant is tucked away just outside Chinatown which is good to get out of the hustle bustle. Staff are friendly and food comes out relatively quickly. Serving sizes are on the smaller size but that's reflected in the prices. Cash only

Often our destination on visits to London and is always excellent, quality good. Note they only take cash although you can do a direct bank transfer too.

I have to thank Old Tree for the hospitality. They were so welcoming with my group and accommodated us even us having a dog. The food is absolutely amazing and the staff is so nice.

Super poor service. We can t even request more sauce for all the food. We try to request have more sauce, finally they provide but when put the things hardly and showing very impatient expression. When we would like to bill, just able to make the payment by card, the staff asking can we pay cash with very rude attitude and tone. Also, card machine is quite different with usually we used to, she knocked hard in the right way for us to tap the card. If you would like to test the food, please do accept with a ride service. And the food is not very authentic Taiwanese cuisine.

DISGUSTING PLACE Bad restaurant, bad experience Firstly I must mention to you that my friends and I, we like trying new cuisines & flavours, we go out for food at least twice a month and we usually don't pay over 20-25e per person. I must also declare to you that we don't have strange willing on food. We decided to go to this restaurant We ordered some food like pork braised(no taste mediocre food) dumplings (4/10) as per drinks lemonade and bubble tea,the drinks started to come when I noticed that the waitress drinks from my tea ,I ask her why she drinks from it then she get quiet I proceeded to ask for a replacement when she gets irritated my partner was horrified seeing what was happening,we decided to stay as our food was coming and after a long day we were hungry,we pay when we saw the bill we were not satisfied with the service and food,and we decided to not pay for service charge 5£ when the waitress lady got angry and she kept asking if we are sure for cancellation is like they force u to pay ,(please check your bill as u have the right to cancel service charges)and we cancelled as the whole thing was a bad experience,I’ll suggest going to Mc Donald’s instead of this horrible place the whole place is a mess the kitchen is near by the toilet where u can see how the food is made which is not in a hygienic environment so dirty plus seeing the chef preparing the food on the floor in a dirty pot disgusting this place should not exist STAY HEALTHY AND DONT BE FOOLED BY ALL THESE ,,GOOD REVIEWS “

Really don’t understand the low reviews. Went here on bank holiday weekend with three friends - service 5/5 and food 5/5. Paid via bank transfer. Definitely coming here again.

Taiwanese beef noodle 16.28 incl service charge. It was ok. There just aren't anything interesting in it- just bits of chewy beef and plain noodles in a dark oily broth. Open till late, after 10pm. I ate this drunk and I remember thinking I wish I had McD’s cheeseburger instead.

I just loved this place, had a wonderful dinner. First time trying Taiwanese food and I was impressed. Beef flat noodle with Szechuan pepper and chilli were absolutely delicious and good quality. The lychee cooler drink omg so so good. Service was very good, prices about average and worth noting they only take cash. 100% recommend I would love to return and try more of the menu.

We came to try this place out after passing it multiple times. We had no issues getting a table for 4, but it was cash only which meant we needed to find a cash point (not far). We were excited to try the beef noodle soup 牛肉面 and raised pork rice 卤肉饭. We also shared some sides of fried shrimp 🍤, balacan green beans 🫛, and stained eggs 🥚 卤蛋. The beef noodle soup was very tasty and was smothered with flavour. The raised pork rice was sweet and filling. All the dishes were enjoyable and authentic. The drinks were a bit expensive for what was given, but the food itself was great and worth the price. Next time I will probably stick with water.

Finally got round to trying this place after walking past it so many times and it seems like a cheap and cheery sort of place. We were quite curious as the reviews are quite mixed but I have to say we were pleasantly surprised - everything was very tasty! We had starters of the salt and pepper squid and chicken, and the Belacan (shrimp paste) french beans. Followed by mains of braised pork rice and the Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Both were very delicious and we cleaned it all up. I think if you go in just expecting a simple and no frills, but tasty meal, then give it a go!

I came here because there were too many people queuing up at other restaurants. It’s very different from a few years ago. There are fewer and fewer oysters in oyster omelette. Now there are only two or three. No wonder there is no need to queue

Worst dining experience ever in London! Don’t even go there! The waitress treated you like you xucked their whole family. Ordered braised pork rice and brown sugar pearl milk tea. The braised pork rice was okay, the pearl milk tea was very light and there was no brown sugar. I felt cheated. The bubble tea tastes worse than the bubble tea shops in the UK. Also, the store only accepts cash, so you won’t even mention it when you enter the store. The transfer is also to a personal account, not a company account. The waiter's attitude was extremely bad, and he was rude from beginning to end. The service is so bad that even Hong Kong people cannot accept it. There was no thank you when paying, just a lazy "Okay" without even looking at you, as if you owed him money. It’s hard to pay for things, and there’s a 10% service charge. It’s better to go to McDonald’s than to come here. The clerk is not Taiwanese, but speaks with a mainland accent. Mainland food sold under the name of Taiwan. I want to give negative points, -9999 points

HORRIBLE AND FRIGHTENING My friend and I dined at the restaurant, and unfortunately, I found a hair in my food. I brought it to the attention of the staff member who seated us and previously came out of the restaurant to get us inside, and although he acknowledged the issue by silently taking the food away, no further action was taken. As we were the only customers present, we requested the bill. Upon receiving it, I explained the situation regarding the hair and expressed my intention to pay only half of the bill, as I had not consumed half of the meal due to the contamination. This triggered the staff and he started swearing at us and told us to get lost. I calmly reminded him that we had treated him with respect and expected the same treatment in return. Eventually, he relented and claimed not to have seen the hair. However, the situation escalated further as other staff members joined in, confronting us while we were still seated at the cramped table. As two Asian women, we felt particularly vulnerable and feared for our safety amidst the disrespectful behavior, swearing, and hostile attitude exhibited by the staff. Regardless of all this we paid as one of the ladies stood over us, and left. I believe a sincere apology and the provision of a hygienic replacement meal would have been more appropriate responses to the situation. In light of the unsatisfactory experience and the compromised quality of the meal, I feel that I should not have been required to pay for it at all. Additionally, I want to emphasise that I have firsthand experience working in a restaurant environment, and I understand that this particular place was not even busy during our visit. This further highlights the unnecessary and unacceptable behavior exhibited by the staff.

Cash only. The taste isn't bad, but the price isn't cheap either. Unfortunately, the toilet was so dirty that I thought it was for employees only.

I’m Taiwanese, this is not Taiwanese food! Also the service is very different to Taiwan’s service! The owner is from China not Taiwan! Be careful! How can any Chinese open a store using simplified Chinese characters and still say it is Taiwanese? Not at all 😢

Rude services, I got stares from waitresses and the attitude was very condescending, would give negative stars if I can. Food portions are incredibly small. Tastes mediocre. Not comfy seatings. The most disappointing restaurant I’ve tried in Chinatown. Only accept cash or bank transfers so you can make your deduction as in why they were doing that.

Small no frills restaurant, tight for space, sit on hard stools, in and out pretty quick. Interesting food worth a visit, around 50 notes for two including two teas costing a fiver eachk Will pop in again and order the pigs trotters!!

Cash Only restaurant and regular favourite. Great food, cooked fast, at reasonable prices in a lively venue. Compact seating means its intimate. Taiwanese Salt+Pepper chicken is so light and delicious. Great broths and noodle dishes too. Unfortuantely the Spring onion pancakes are on menu, but sadly never available.

Thought the price was reasonable until they brought the food out and I was shocked to see how small the portions were. 10% service for very little service. I don’t recommend this place.

THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CARD. I don't know anything about Taiwanese food, so I can't compare. There were quite a few clients who spoke the language, I understand that if they choose it, it won't be bad. We liked it but nothing to write home about. Tables almost close together. What we liked least were two things: without letting us read the letter outside, they insisted on us entering so much that one feels "hunted", without the ability to think. By doing it this quickly, we couldn't read a small sign that said that they only accepted cash, and as tourists we didn't carry these widespread virtual cards. Their anger at seeing that when paying seemed excessive to me, that's a warning and that's it. Finally they agreed to pay in euros, I don't think the change they made was wrong, but with the methods they used, it was impossible to verify it. The service at the table was good.

As a Taiwanese who has been in the UK for a long time, I recommend you to come! At first I was a little scared to see such a low review, but after eating, I decided to come and help the store to vindicate itself. Let’s first talk about the shortcomings that everyone criticizes: 1. The price range is on the expensive side: well, the price range is generally in the formal center of London. After all, this is Leicester Square. 2. 10% service charge: This is also the general London restaurant price. If we really want to tell you, we took a cup of takeaway milk when we checked out before leaving, and even the takeout milk was +10%? ! And the size is obviously one-third smaller than the inner cup 3. Only accept cash (or bank transfer) It is not easy for everyone to live overseas. I have only seen this only in mainland restaurants, but I will not comment if the store does this. advantage: 1. I can’t say that the taste is Taiwan’s top standard, but it definitely meets the 87% satisfaction rate, especially the rich menu. For example, the noodle soup dish is something I have never seen in any Taiwanese restaurant in Europe when I studied and worked in Europe (Spain + UK) and traveled around. This alone is a great value (mainly because I like oyster noodles so much). Wire) 2. The milk is delicious! It's Taiwan's old-style black tea that I brewed at the time. It's really different from all the beverage shops opened by my mainland friends. The overall taste is really the same Taiwanese taste as I have experienced before. I feel homesick after living overseas for a long time. Even though it is a bit expensive, I am still willing to come and visit.

Brilliant staff, delish food, such a nice homey atmosphere.

It is not the normal Taiwanese flavor, feeling like an adjusted Chinese restaurant. Price doesn’t fit the taste. Welcome to go to Taiwan to have the most flavorful meals, which only cost you two pounds to be very full.

Great food and fast, but portions are horrible. Had a beef stir fry noodles, got three boc choys and that’s it. Quite expensive aswell, with a 10% service charge… anyway food was actually good tho

Scammed us we pairs £103 for 4 mains dishes 2 starters and 4 drinks. They would charge large portions without mentioning it. Staff were rude and unfriendly, took at least 20 minutes to get any tap water. Wouldn’t reccomend

My wife and I wanted to get a bite to eat when we left the theatre. While looking around we saw this little basic Chinese restaurant with a man encouraging us in, and as it looked quiet we thought we’d go in. It was just past 10pm so we thought it might be difficult finding somewhere. The menu was very basic with no prices. We didn’t recognise any of the dishes so we ordered some vegetable fried rice and something similar to chicken in black bean source but without the black beans. It was okay, a bit weird taste but okay. We share this one portion between the two of us. When we got the bill I nearly fell off my seat. It was £13.80 for the rice the other dish was £15.80. Two bottles of plastic bottled water was £6.00 plus service charge our bill come to just under £40!! So one portion of food and it wasn’t even particularly nice. What a total rip off?

The worst place to eat I have ever incounted.Bad customer service but even worse food.I have ordered sweet & sower chicken but I'm sure I have tasted pork cooked in sweet & sower sauce.Soja sauce(for dumplings we have ordered) was given only 3 times in tinny tiny porsions on our request instead of putting it on the table.Seemed like they were really stingy on everything they have provided.In the end we have decided not to pay for customer service as it was almost not existant.The manager/male was not apologetic but aggressive to us.Seemed liked he didn't care about improving customer service at all. They obviously hiding there income and avoiding taxes as the place is only paid cash in hand. Avoid this place at all cost!!!!!

the fried chicken was 50% raw inside The portion is relatively small compared with other chinese restaurants in this area. We would not come back again.

I come and take out their Turnip (radish) cake. It was freshly pan-cooked with crispy texture, highly recommended if anyone fancies some Taiwanese street foods or just being home sick👍🏼 (Cash only)

Food quality is ok, not the best but not bad if you want to have Taiwanese. However, the prices are an absolute ripoff. The side dishes (like fried chicken, fried tofu, taiwanese sausages) are around £10+, which is absurd. Don't look at the menu from a year or more ago, prices have increased a lot since then. As everyone else have mentioned, they have poor service and cramped seating, and yet will charge you 12.5% service charge. Also, it's cash only, which is a massive pain. There's a reason the shop is almost always empty whenever I walk past

The food is so tasty and good value for money, the noodles were rich and so tasty. servers were so nice, explained the menu to us and even made sure to ask about our dietary requirements. Everyone should come here and try!

Such a gem! The bao and the salt and pepper chicken were incredible. Other dishes also looked great. Don’t undersrand why the rating is not good. They clearly know what they are doing. I definitely want to come back.

Food was fine, payment method is cash only which is horrible especially after pandemic. The Cantonese owner is the rudest person in the world. Will never go again. If you want to have good food with a better service experience, don’t come here.

London's chinatown is full of small eateries ranging from the gaudy tourist traps to small authentic gems.... We found a few positive reviews of this restaurant as "authentically taiwanese" and gave it a try for a Saturday Lunch. Definitely not a gem :-) It is an unpretentious and cramped little eatery, mostly attended by a chinese clientele, and it is true that the food is very close to what you would get from one of the cheaper taipei hakwer stalls..... Hygiene is questionable, food quality is not to write anything home about and certainly not worth the inflated prices that are asked for it. Basically what you would get at any chinese market stall in the UK for maybe £20 will cost you over £50, cash only. Not what I would call a great value for money. Will definitely not return.

Poor service but have service charge?

I went to dine in alone in 3rd Dec , someone else split my drink and they said they will pay mine, however I think the shop still charge me double, because I only had a braised pork rice, veg, mulrbean milk and a small plate of braised pork and it charged me 30£… I was having something in mind at that moment so I trusted them however it just ruined my night. The seats are too small too so I think people there split the food all the time. Food itself is fine but as a Taiwanese sadly I won’t go there ever again

吃过最难吃的台湾菜，一塌糊涂的蚝仔煎，葱油饼和盐酥鸡，盐酥鸡全是面没有鸡。服务态度差强人意，做这么难吃还好意思摆poker face？还好意思收service fee? 也就只能在游客区做做游客的一次性生意了

I had the Taiwanese beef noodle soup and soy milk, the soup was really good. Prices were alright, just like eating in any other restaurant in London. Service was also very quick, my food took less than 5 minutes to come! This place is cash only.

As a Taiwanese, their food doesn't really taste like home to me at all. Quite disappointing. Feels like the owner was someone who had been to Taiwan and trying to recreate the food. The dishes look authentic but fail to taste so. The only authentic item is the soya milk which they make themselves so that explains 😂 If you've never been to Taiwan and fancy some "exotic" experience then I'd say go for it, but if you're looking for authentic taste this is not the place to go.

While the Sichuan Beef Noodle is spicy and quite authentically tasting, its portion and price don't seem to be a fair match. In addition, this shop is cash only, so be sure to have enough cash for your meal there.

The food was average. The beef noodles weren't very authentic but it tasted fine for what it was. My main complaint is that the dishes are very overpriced. The side dishes especially are very small portions and range from £6-9.

Today - 26/2/2022 - Saturday. I went to this restaurant to have oyster omelette on my own. Having good intentions of taking some photos to show it to my friends to recommend them to this restaurant and to post on here as well for helping others as well. I was was shocked & shaken by this very bad customer service experience. I never had in my life. I am 65 years old I was taking the photographs of the food that has been served out. With placing the menu with the restaurant's name on, this girl came over to me in a very rude manner, not once, but every few seconds to harassing me of taking the photo. I explained to her that by my taking the food photo is for recommendation as she can Google search me of all the food reviews I had made over the past years. She refused to listen. And continue to be very abrupt, rude. I demand to speak to the restaurant owner. She refused & said boss in not in. Her attitude was so intimidating until I qanted to call the police. I left with no choice. I had to take a photo of her for my own security purpose. Sorry to say. I need to post her photo on here. In hope, the owner should looks into this matter on her attitude and her customer service before she ruins the whole business. I don't recommend this restaurant anyone and definitely not going on your own. Who knows. One day, this crazy girl would beat up a customer. Or spit saliva on customer's food. Beware. Completely no trust at ALL. I guess, I am not the only one who has given bad reviews to this restaurant. Many has been experiencing bad customer service etc. 👎👎👎👎👎

I used yo frequent this restaurant for ages. Before the pandamic. Then recently, I started to go there again. Having my great intention of taking more food photo included with the menu name in it. I was shocked by the way the waitress was so insulting, keep confronting me every few second. I almost has to call the police, they way she was so rude, harassing me. I explained to her. Saying. I like to post on Google to help others. I has been on Google for various restaurants. From top notch 5* restaurants to cafe. And I never had given any bad reviews on any restaurants. This is my 1st bad reviews on this waitress. She is so rude, harassing me every second. Even I told her, I need the menu to take with the food as to show the food I had is from the restaurant. She was nit happy with that. What is wrong with her? I hope the boss would deal with this employee before she ruined the whole restaurant business. I never knew, this cafe/ restaurant has such a low rating. Until now when I start to search from other customer's review. Sorry to say, this restaurant is not worth to go. As just round the corner. Is the C & R restaurant where they has been around for decades. And they have better quality food, great service at C & R
