We visited as we were staying in the village. Each time we went in the welcome from all of the girls was very warm and helpful. They offer a wide range of food available all day, which suited us as we like to eat early. We visited for both dinner and breakfast. The food is well presented and delicious. They are very dog friendly with the added bonus of a little shop inside. A pub worth travelling to visit.

I don’t give negative reviews usually but felt the necessity to just write as this establishment has no email address on its website to keep my opinion within the business and if I telephoned I may not get to the powers above. Really nice location (we live 23 miles away ) recommend by a friend . The staff were faultless, the food acceptable but not outstanding. But when the bill came it was £5.60 for a large lime and soda. That is ridiculous- I questioned it with our delightful waitress and she apologised and said it was because it was 2xbottles and 2x lime . Maybe but come on you are so organised - get some soda large bottles in or a siphoned soda and be competitive. My lime and soda was just 40p less than my husbands pint of Guinness. That’s isn’t right - I was driving and lime and soda is the drink I enjoy - but .,,,,, your pricing is ridiculous-sorry to moan.

What an amazing pub, such friendly and welcoming staff and an unbelievable choice on the menu plus specials - so much to choose from, very hard decisions! Visiting an event nearby so a long journey for us to get there, 3 hours drive and didn't arrive til 2pm but nothing was off the menu or sold out. Absolutely fantastic food, generous portions and just wish we lived nearer as would be visiting on a very regular basis.

We were staying in the area and went for a walk for the day, stopping off here for lunch. The food and service were very good, the drinks were good, and it did what we needed for the day. However, it's a little pricey, and the sign on the door that muddy boots weren't welcome did put a dent in the experience.

Sixteen of us had a prearranged lunch after a 6 mile walk with our Walking Group. Large Pub consisting of old and modern decor which blends well. A lovely setting in this picturesque village with beautiful surrounding area. Our Reserved table was in a private area and the food was served promptly and very efficiently. I had ham, egg and chips with real thick sliced super quality meat. My wife had a special chicken dish which got a 10/10 vote. Everyone I spoke to complimented the Pub on the range and quality of the food. Well done to all the Staff who had a number of large and small parties to deal with on a busy Friday lunchtime.

Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed an outstanding Sunday lunch at the Old Royal Ship today. We have enjoyed excellent meals there before but never Sunday lunch. Our meal was almond as guests as my wife’s cooking - which is a very high bar indeed! The meat was full of flavour and plentiful, the vegetables cooked to perfection and I am told that the desert of crumble was some of the best ever (I was too replete to enjoy desert!). As always, the staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable which was especially impressive as the restaurant was full! I cannot recommend highly enough!

We have recently moved into the area and quickly discovered the The Old Royal Ship. Each time we have visited there has been a warm and friendly greeting. The pub is light and airy with plenty of space around the tables. Friendly and efficient service. A good wine list. A regular menu and a specials board. Today my wife had hake with a herb crust with vegetables and potatoes. I had a chicken bacon Caesar salad. Both were prepared to order and were absolutely delicious. Followed this up with a good coffee and had a good chat with mein host on leaving.

We went to this pub for a family birthday and all chose the roast dinners. My father-in-law has terminal brain cancer and wanted to make it a special experience for his wife's birthday, well we should not have bothered ! First thing was we booked for 12.30 and got our meals at 1.40 then my nephew got a long human hair all over his dinner and the staff didn't even offer to change the meal! The roast potatoes weren't even cooked and the vegetables were dry, the beef was cold . When my father in law complained the manageress was completely uncaring though she didn't charge us for the meal, it was as if it was a common experience. It's also not particularly disabled friendly Somewhere we won't be going again and definitely don't recommend

This was a great halfway point for my sister to meet me & mum. I really liked the overall place and the staff were particular friendly however the food was rather disappointing although maybe it was just bad food choices. I had the doorstep tuna/red onion mayo sandwich with chips - bread was rather stale. red onion was not mixed in with the tuna & chips were nothing special. Sister had burger & french fries and she said it was unimpressive. Mum had the salmon & prawns starter which looked very good although I can't comment on quality. Would I consider coming here again? that is a possibility if we had to meet up halfway again, although I would make better choices.

We are a casual group (in this instance 11 of us) of not so young males looking for a comfortable venue to meet up for good!!! conversation over a pint and lunch. And this just what you get from the Old Royal Ship plus some friendly staff and chefs who know how to produce good pub food. We preordered our meals and on arrival were served with drinks that we took to our prepared table. 4 tables together forming a square that allowed us all to speak and hear one another quite well (hearing aids adjusted as appropriate!!) We deliberately arranged to be at our table ahead of the time that lunch had been ordered, catchup chat time! So our meals were delivered precisely when expected....how chefs manage that is beyond me!! The hubbub of chatter was replaced by the clatter of cutlery on crockery . My vegetable lasagna, salad and garlic bread was very tasty!!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

It’s been a while since we have been able to walk into a pub, sit inside, and dine! For us this was almost exactly 7 months since we were last able to do that. We are still being wary; we take precautions with masks and hand-cleanser. We also visited this pleasant pub at lunchtime on a weekday, rather than on an evening or weekend when it might be heaving with clientele. We had booked a week or so before: after driving past the pub when it was operating a takeaway service only. We resolved to visit when we could dine-in. So, we were expecting to visit what is a large and attractive Wiltshire village on a sunny day in late May, and have a spot of lunch; but sadly the weather had other ideas. The rain and strong wind did little to dampen our spirits though; it was good to be dining out, but in, as it were.We were welcomed by a cheery lady who showed us to our pre-booked table, we were glad to note that the pub was quite busy (suggesting decent fare). My partner decided on a warming coffee and I had tap-water. The large coffee, plus water jug and menus arrived quickly. The coffee was apparently very good and strong, and much enjoyed whilst studying the reasonably broad menu. We considered fish and chips, steak, and the burgers (the chicken variety of burger sounded more appealing than the beef to me, as I do like Cajun flavours). I prefer a starter and main whare as my partner prefers a main and dessert, and our choices reflected those preferences. With fish and chips, some restaurants do not use skinned fish and this changes the flavour and convenience factor of the meal. Sadly, the ORS use skin-on fish so my partner opted for scampi. I completed the homage to 70’s Berni Inns with a rump steak, but only after deciding on another old 70’s favourite, the deep-fried whitebait. Would you believe that back in 1973 an 8oz rump steak meal at a Berni Inn was 77p!!!My whitebait soon arrived, perfectly fried and dusted with paprika; it was good fish but the tartare, although having a reasonable unfussy taste, was so thick as to be very difficult to spread onto the delicate little fish. Dipping the fish into the pot of tartare was a no-no, and besides there was enough tartare for my partner’s scampi (providing it was not contaminated by whitebait remnants). The whitebait was accompanied by a generous serving of quite soft wholemeal bread, but with a butter pat that was far too cold to successfully spread onto the bread. There was a small attractive salad (sadly with AGP’s) and a lemon slice.AWP - Awful Green Peppers: vile-flavoured unripe capsicum peppers, that would have turned into beautifully sweet red capsicum peppers. WHY?!When our mains arrived I could immediately see, and soon confirmed that, I had made a terrible mistake by choosing a selection of vegetables to accompany my steak. The cabbage was overcooked and tasteless, the carrots were overcooked and had no ‘bite’ plus the taste was somewhat diminished, the broccoli was overcooked and practically tasteless, and the cauliflower was one stage away from being soup. The tomatoes were the large variety that I just do not care for, as compared with small cherry tomatoes. The latter are sweet, whereas large tomatoes are just not at all sweet. Despite the tomatoes being well cooked, hot and well presented, as they were on this occasion, they are just ‘not my bag’. I will not criticise here because other people like them (and they are welcome to my share … in perpetuity). The rest of the meal was very good, the medium ‘pink-no-blood’ steak was perfectly cooked: very juicy and tasty (i.e. unlike cheap supermarket steaks at £3-7 which are invariably tender but totally tasteless). A tiny bit of gristle was soon dealt with, and although a tad tough to cut, the steak was most enjoyable. As I ate my meal, the steak became increasingly tender, so I guess the steak had been served straight from the griddle pan, rather than having been allowed to rest (as we do at home). The chips were dry, not greasy, but on the edge of being overcooked (especially those with a smaller section), but they were very near perfect; especially with the good quality malt vinegar provided. The mushrooms were absolutely perfect. My partner’s scampi was excellent and cooked to perfection. The batter was light and crispy, the scampi was moist, hot and delicately tasty. The side salad was good: I noted the inclusion of cherry tomatoes and wondered if the chef had ever considered these as a replacement for the big tomatoes as served with the steak? My partner did use the remainder of the tartare with her scampi, and concurred that the texture made things “more difficult”.Mains finished, and I was full, and even after her single course my partner had no room for duff (a generic term for dessert, used extensively in Yorkshire). So dining was complete and we waited 5 minutes or so for our waitress to visit us during her (up to now) frequent reconnoitres to see if a customer was in need of service. On the whole our visit was good, the service was spot on, although I did have to go looking for someone to pay the bill: which was £41.85. I can forgive the veg because I should have known better, and recognised it was there more for a contrasting decorative colour rather than for a serious tilt at pleasing my palate. As a principle though I would never find it possible to forgive the use of AGP’s!!I’m sure we’ll be return here and will probably dine out in the, what looked like, large garden or under the generous canopied area adjacent to the pub, providing that we get some sun in this summer of our discontent.

The landlady (who I don't think ever takes a day off!) is always so welcoming and friendly. The food is always excellent. On this visit I had a homemade beef and ale pie. This was a proper pie with pastry on the top and bottom with a lovely filling. So many pubs these days put a square of pre-cooked pastry on the top of some beef casserole and call it pie - not at the Old Royal Ship - this was the real deal. All the other meals were well cooked and nicely presented. My husband even got his beloved roast beef with Yorkshire puddings despite the fact that it was Sunday evening when we went. Los platos son de calidad y abundantes. Platos típicos ingleses, muy buena la lasaña y el fish&chips.; Para tomar una cerveza es ideal también. El servicio es muy bueno, la dueña es encantadora y atenta.

Called here today on the way home back to Lancashire and thoroughly enjoyed our food. The staff where friendly and helpful and the food we ordered was delicious. I only wish we lived nearer as this lovely pub would become a firm favourite for regular visits. Will definitely be back when back down this way again.

Three of us had the two course Sunday lunch - choice of roast pork or roast beef on the day. The last member of our party had the beef salad - the beef looked absolutely wonderful, and apparently tasted just as good! All meals were thoroughly enjoyed - particularly the cauliflower cheese that came with the roasts and Yorkshire pudding. The desserts - three of us had the banoffee pie, the fourth had rice pudding - were very tasty too. The people behind the bar seemed to know most people that came in which gave the impression that people regularly return to eat. We had never been to the Old Royal Ship Inn before, but we were made very welcome and look forward to returning soon.

We have just had a break in the Cotswolds, needing food late on Sunday, we came across the Old Royal Ship and called in completely on the off chance. We were met with a good friendly service from the staff, good beers on offer and some very nice food, again served with a smile and some banter. The pub had a few early doors drinkers in, who were obviously local trade which is always a good sign.

Great pub to catch up with old friends as my husband use to work in the area many years ago. The staff have always been wonderful, great beer, great food and excellent service. If you would like to experience a Saturday afternoon, would highly recommend as the hunting people come in for a beer or two. Well worth the visit.

Booked a meal with family, the choice was brilliant, there is something on the menu for everyone's taste, especially with such a large choice on the specials board. The service at the bar and waitress service at the table was quick and efficient, which made the evening even more enjoyable. Well done to the top quality staff.

My husband and I called in on the off chance as we were passing. We had our two small dogs with us which weren't allowed in the pub - but on this occasion it wasn't a problem as it was a warm and sunny day and we were more than happy to sit in the more than adequately sized and pleasant outside seating area. The pub was quiet at the particular time of the afternoon that we called and we had one drink which we drank slowly, unaware that the premises was about to close. No one came to rush or hurry us and we enjoyed our relaxing and appreciated drink in peace and quiet. It was only when we took the glasses back to the bar and left that we realised we were the last customers in the pub and the staff had been waiting to close...and we only knew this by looking back and seeing that the doors had been closed. Would definitely call again if in the area but as we would have the dogs with us, it could only be on a fine weather day.

Had a lovely meal at The Old Royal Ship Inn. There was plenty to choose from the menu and also a specials board. I chose the Cheese, bacon and mushroom tart with salad and new potatoes and my partner chose to have a steak Bagette served with salad and chips. I must admit our eyes were bigger than our tummies as we chose to have a desert. A rather large portion of treacle tart with custard which beat me !!! The service was excellent and all the staff were polite. Would definitely eat there again if visiting the area.

Large car park to the rear and a nice garden in the summer right on the village green. The food here is expensive for what it is! Make no mistake, it is very good pub grub, large menu and specials board, plus a good selection of beers and cyders. But make no mistake, chips, veg etc are all frozen and sweets are micro waved. But it is a very friendly pub and I would commend it! But take your credit card.

Went here with a big party from U3A and had an enjoyable evening, apart from the noise level from the conversations! Plenty of choice of meals that were all seemingly enjoyed by our group. The pub was also helpful with special requests such as "no lettuce" and "berries only - no cheesecake". Staff prompt and helpful too. Choice of three real ales and plenty of wine to pick from.
