What an absolutely gorgeous 3 course Sunday lunch. Cannot fault the food, service and atmosphere. The “Pork& Chorizo” Scotch Egg starter was delicious as were the Scallops my wife had. For main I tucked into one of the best Roast Pork I have ever tasted! For puds there was in my opinion only one item on the menu to pick … Caramelised Apple Crumble with custard … yum yum! Cannot recommend The Old Pheasant enough now it’s under new ownership … big round of applause to Damon and Chef Robert.

There were three of us staying in different hotels in the area and one was staying at the old pheasant. We met there and ate on the Wednesday night for dinner and it was excellent, food, beers and service was spot on. We all had different dishes and were all very impressed. So, we repeated the exercise on Thursday and it was superb again. Can't recommend this place enough.

Haven't been for a few years. As it was Saturday I booked a table in the restaurant, but it wasn't too busy at 6pm. Parking however was a nightmare and we ended up down a side street in the only available space. The menu is limited, probably the after effects of Covid. We opted for fish and chips with crushed peas. The portion of fish was large. Service was prompt. I felt however that we could have had a similar meal from a chip shop and it wasn't anything special.

Living in the area, we decided to have a staycation and have really enjoyed going out for lunch every day at the Pheasant. The staff are always attentive and knowledgeable, there's a good selection of beers and wines, and the extensive menu has something for everyone. Yesterday I had a vegan dish of warm roasted beetroot and pumpkin with red chickory and toasted seeds; to say it was delicious is an understatement. It was rich and indulgent; perfect for a dreary Autumn day! My better half had a ham sandwich, which was large and satisfying and stuffed with ham. It also came with fries and a salad and I'm told was fantastic. Even the hound appreciated it!

We enjoyed a relaxing four night stay, our first away from home since 'lock down'. We felt very safe and well cared for by the friendly staff. We had a small twin room, that was comfortable with a decent bathroom but some of the fixtures and fittings needed updating with attention to details. We ate each night in the restaurant and whilst the menu was limited it was uniformly excellent and full of imaginative twists. The giant mushrooms and tempura vegetables deserve a special mention, as do the cooked breakfasts. Highly recommended as a base to explore Rutland.

I recommended this restaurant on some comments by friends who had been here as somewhere for a works party, ( Ones, I hasten to add, who's opinions I trust.) But as anyone knows, you do get a feeling near the date that it might be not as one would hope. However, my feelings of trepidation where laid to rest as soon as we walked through the door. It must be 40 years since I went to this pub so it was lovely to see what has been done with it. It was warm and cosy, beautifully understated decorations. The cutest pub dog. The food on the whole was lovely. Everybody agreed that the roast beef was perfect. Warning to those who don't like their beef rare, it does come rare so would advise before hand that you prefer it non pink. Veggies were cooked beautifully and plentiful. And the red wine gravy, well could have had a jug of that. The reason I have marked the visit down is because after such a lovely beefy main I would have gone for a lovely piece of Stilton with a glass of port as a "dessert" rather than something sweet. The cheesecake, was lovely but too sweet for me, I do prefer a cheese course.Everybody said that their personal choices were lovely. Service was good, attentive but not in your face.I will be coming back for a normal menu soon.

Brilliant service! After a long journey from the coast, we called in on the off chance of a meal, but found that we had arrived literally ten minutes after the afternoon meal service had stopped. We were gutted so inquired at the bar if there was any way that we could get anything to eat, even a cold sausage roll would have sufficed at that stage. The very nice lady behind the bar disappeared to ask the chef who was in the process of, we assume, closing up the kitchen. “No problem,” she said cheerily, “chef said she’s happy to stay open for you - what can I get you?”.There were four of us so we were absolutely delighted. The food was simply lovely. We had two of the steak pies and the home made lasagnes and a lovely sweet as well. My cheesecake was outstanding. The beer was nicely kept and the gin and tonics were very refreshing. It was excellent value for money as well. We’ve been past lots of times and wished that we had called in before. Have no hesitation in recommending the Pheasant for its outstanding service, lovely food and exceptionally welcoming staff.Thank you for accommodating us we will definitely be back.

Misleading address as it states it's I'm Oakham but it actually is 5 minutes away from Uppingham. The room wasn't clean, the beds were old, the mattress was uncomfortable and creaking, there was paint everywhere outside the entrance. No proper staff to welcome guests, we were greeted by the chef instead and it made me rethink twice before even attempting breakfast. We went somewhere else. The price wasn't cheap for just two rooms of a family of three, £150. Wouldn't recommend it at all unless you are desperate.

Inside was a bit of a miss-mash of styles and décor and didn't have any sort of theme.Staff were friendly and pleasant, service was in general good. The ale was in good order. The food was however, a disappointment. Starters were soup (was fine) and ribs (very poor - just heated-up meat smothered in sweet chilli dipping sauce). Mains were vegetarian sausage and mash (was OK) and lamb in red wine and mint sauce (sauce was lacking depth of flavour and had been over-thickened such that it had congealed). Vegetables were well-cooked.The whole experience was just a let-down. Won’t be going back, sorry.

Firstly, The tables, although they look clean seem to have a sticky residue on them, which we noted on our last visit, almost as though they have been very poorly varnished and it hasn't set/dried properly, but they feel almost tacky, a problem that could be easily solved by the use of table cloths, especially in the restaurant, but we didn't even have table mats today! Also 2 people in our party were quite ill after their meals, 1 within minutes of eating, and the other within minutes of leaving the restaurant, (different meals, but same veg, spread, and stuffing balls - taken from my plate when I'd finished)!Ours lunches consisted of: Starters - 2 soups, & 2 garlic mushrooms, no complaints on those but to serve Margarine (or the cheapest most disgusting tasting spread), that looked as though it had been scraped out of leftovers from other dishes, instead of proper butter with the bread, is a definite "no no", (if someone prefers spread then they ask for it, but I don't expect to have to ask for butter in a restaurant! Even in a café if I'm paying for "bread & butter", I expect butter, not spread!Main course - 2 roast pork, which was just about the only edible thing on the plate, served with roast potatoes that looked & tasted like they were several days old and had been reheated numerous times, Yorkshire pudding that was like leather and almost burnt and a rather anaemic looking grey stuffing ball and gravy. Supposed to have been served with apple sauce but we even had to ask for that!1 salmon & prawn dish served in a white tasteless sauce, which although at he time of eating it tasted ok, left daughter feeling very ill soon afterwards.1 vegetarian pasta dish which also was very bland and tasteless.Accompanying vegetables to share between four adults were1 Small dish of tasteless and watery Cauliflower cheese, and 1 small dish which contained old boiled potatoes,(cooked in skins, to look like new potatoes), broccoli, carrots and peas. These were just edible! Desserts - we didn't even go there, for fear of what may have been served up, especially as Eton Mess was on the menu!!!!Service, what service? Orders taken, food bought, table cleared, 2nd course bought, table cleared, asked if we wanted dessert, menus bought by which time we'd all decided we'd had enough. The waitress did ask if everything was ok, in between courses, out of our party of 4 people one said very quietly "fine", because hers was at the time, one nodded,(he rarely complains, just doesn't ever go back), 2 people never answered. Now I would have thought that with that sort of response they'd realise not everyone was satisfied.Got the impression that even if we had complained we would have somehow been wrong in the Manager/Owners eyes anyway, he comes across as rather self opinionated, not the sort of person to complain too, not hugely endowed with people skills or bothered by his lack of them!Staff that we saw excluding the Manager/Owner - one barman and one waitress didn't look or sound happy in their jobs! I wonder if this was because they are overworked due to lack of any other staff? I would have expected to see more staff front of house on a busy day like today, especially with the number of customers in the place, because I noted when we first walked in that some people were eating in the bar area also, and the car park was full to bursting, so they were very busy, but if other customers experienced the same as us, I can't imagine they get many returning customers, and can't see the business thriving on passing trade alone, especially if the hotel side is managed in the same way!

We booked for breakfast at the restaurant of The Old Pheasant, on arrival there was no staffpresent, so we sat at the most convenient table, and waited, and waited, and waited. Finally a girl came to ask if we would like tea and coffee, which we ordered, but, she didn't give us any cups! we then tried to get her attention, eventually a man came to our table extremely abrasive, and began to talk to us in a very degrading manner, telling us that we were atthe wrong table, as you can see its set for dinner, your table is around the corner (which we did not see) We said we apologise, but, we didn't know this!!! he then began to rant yet again, about how he was explaining to us as though we were naughty school children, VERY EMMBARRASSING not only for us but for the other diners!!!! We placed our food order, received our Breakfast, which we could not eat, as it was very poor, under cooked bacon and dried up scrambled egg, we left the food paid the bill and hoped for some kind of reaction from him, but alas he was only interested in whether or not we wanted a bill for his over priced food. We visit this area frequently as my family and friends live there, and we have eaten at some lovely places, THE OLD PHEASANT needs up dating on customer service.

We had dinner here whilst staying in the hotel and with a varied menu and lots of options, we had no trouble selecting a starter, main and dessert each. Everyone was very happy with their meals and it was all good value too. I particularly enjoyed my mussels to start, kangaroo for main and chill chocolate dessert.

We have just had a little snack here at the Old Pheasant, it took 30 minutes to receive a baguette which did not have much sauce with it! Would have been better to make my own for that, very expensive and the dessert was vile, we were promised a malteser cheesecake and the chef came out with a mint cheesecake which was awful! There was also a waitress working in PURPLE jeans, hoodie and warn in uggs, which did not look professional, she was also sat at the bar with her feet on the chair which people have to sit on! Also her attitude to the other member of staff and to the customers was appalling. Last of all we went to the toilet and there was urine all over the seat and hair on the floor not very clean at all! We wont be coming back in a rush! Very disappointing.

We were stopping at the nearby travellodge and needed somewhere to have a decent breakfast to fill us up as we were attending a wedding and wouldn't be having food again till late afternoon. We arrived to a warm welcome and were seated in the breafast area of the restaurant. The interior of The Old Pheasant is lovely a really pretty country pub. We had our 1 year old daughter whom they had a very nice highchair for and she was made a fuss off too. We were told to help ourselves to juice and cereals and then our order was taken for our cooked breakfast. The breakfast was delicious and kept us full till we ate again late afternoon. Would highly recommend the breakfast to anybody wanting a good start to the day.

After reading a lot of bad reviews i decided to come and see for my self. Well I've got to say massive menu, must try the kangaroo, the new owners are hilarious!! The manager Paul is very friendly and does what ever he can to make you welcome. Can't wait to go back what a night everyone seems to join in conversation when they are sitting by the open fire!! My only tip is start booking its going to get busy as the owner nicked the chef from London!!!!

Gostamos de todo o menu e da cerveja. A simpatia do atendimento e como estavamos com um elemento numa cadeira de rodas, não se pouparam a esforços para o conforto do mesmo.

No one there apart from one two other couples. Lovely setting though. Tree to have to book years ago. Food pretty tasteless but piled high. Would go for drink only.

We ate here a couple of years ago and it was fantastic, so decided to go back as we were staying locally. The food wasn't bad, but compared to our previous experience we were disappointed. The high spot for me this time was the starter (garlic and stilton mushrooms), which really was delicious. The rest was certainly quite acceptable, straightforward, pub food, but the whole menu lacked the 'sparkle' of our earlier visit (when it had been necessary to book a table in the restaurant rather than take our pick anywhere in restaurant or bar: was this due to the recession of a loss of reputation?). I suppose if I hadn't been there before my expectations would have been lower and I'd have been quite happy with what I had.

We have just had a Sunday roast and it was fantastic.. we have been all over locally for a good Sunday roast and always seem disappointed. Lovely staff, amazing food! Really couldn’t recommend more highly. Friends have eaten in the week and the lunch time menu is also very good. We will be back next weekend!

We met family here today for lunch, absolutely great! The pub is clean, well appointed, tasteful decor, staff were all friendly and helpful, toilets were spotless. A party of 5, we ordered whitebait and trout for starters. Whitebait was generous in portion size and cooked to perfection, trout was well presented, all were delicious. Mains were chicken supreme, sea bass, steak and a risotto. Plates were hot, food was hotter! And all of it was well cooked, well presented and delicious. The setting is delightful, worth the 2 hr drive for both parties to meet, I recommend this place on all counts. This will be our family meet up point going forward. If you’re local to Barrowden use this place, support it, it deserves it. Shame we live so far away!

I attended a family birthday party for 50 people here on 14/9/24. We had drinks, sit down dinner and all 14 of the attractive bedrooms were occupied by us. This is a lovely, traditional pub with good parking, seats in the garden, and in the middle of a beautiful village. Food and service were fantastic and the rooms were gorgeous with a cottagey feel and large, modern bathrooms. The owner, who I think also served us, did a brilliant job and I can't recommend this venue highly enough. 5 stars +++ from me!
