Old Mother Redcap in Blackburn with Darwen

Visited this establishment just before we were due to go to the Blackburn Empire theatre 🎥 to watch Beauty and the Beast, which btw was fantastic 😀 enjoyed every single second of it. But this place, the food was not fantastic 😕 it was what I call mediocre. There wasn't very much of it at all. .........

Called in for a carvery. Really warm welcome, friendly staff, spotlessly clean, no waiting excellent food and good value.

Had fantastic time at old mother and red cap was served by a very lovely woman called Darci was very kind and very helpful the I went with a friend who is disabled the drinks and food was amazing but was told by friends a free drink should of come with the carvery but did not get it paid for 2 each big thanks to Kim also thanks Lee and jay

Family meal to celebrate birthday party of eight. This isn't the first time that I've had a poor experience here. He's become a standard joke. We go here cuz really it should be classed as our local. It's the nearest pub to us. We tend to go when it's birthdays, etc or anything else that we want to meet up with as it's pretty Central to everyone. That's the only reason. In the past we've had six caverys and two people have ordered something from the menu. While we wait with our tickets to go and collect the car very and wait and wait and wait and wait eventually we give up go and get the car very and still wait for the others to get the menu that they've ordered. Usually around 45 minutes if they've not forgot. As for the sweets, ordering eight sweets again. You wait you wait. You wait you wait. You wait, you wait then go and ask to be told that they're out of stock of something. And would you like an alternative? Never once have we gone in there and actually got what we ordered. With this in mind, the last two times we've been in, we've all just stuck to carveries. Obviously last night we paid just shy of 80 quid for the meals plus all the drinks. When we got up to collect the carvary there was no potatoes nor vegetables. Nothing the cupboard was empty my wife and daughter-in-law just grab some scraps that were left myself and some other people were told to come back in 15 minutes cuz there was nothing ready. 15 minutes later went back. Still nothing ready. The family meal that we've gone out for was over the other seven had eaten the meals and are we still waiting to get mine. This never happened as when I return to the counter there was 16 people queueing up waiting with nobody at the serving hatch. At this point I'm not wanting to sit with the family eating a meal on my own cuz they're all finished. I gave up and asked for me the money back for my meal. The rest of the family decided not to bother with sweets. The tables were full of plates not collected from people that have been and had meals there. The place seems to have no staff. I've told the family even given the fact it's our local and it's on our doorstep but I've banned myself from going there again. The place needs to decide what it wants to do. It had loads of people coming in for just eat orders and this is where all the food went while I was queueing up waiting. He has to decide if it's going to cater for takeaways or actually serve food in the restaurant to customers that enter the building cuz it was clear from what I saw last night it can't do both. Maybe if he does want to do both it should look for better management of the establishment. As from what I saw last night, discarded food on tables, plates, piled up and the state of the carvery. It ain't working as it is. And I certainly won't be going in again or recommending it to anybody. It amazes me that other establishments that do carvary and we've been to including a well-known chain of pubs don't have this problem and you never experienced this problem in them. But when you read the reviews of this place. It seems quite common. I will certainly be giving it a total miss from now on and told the family if they wish to go in there. They'll be doing so on their own as I won't be going through the door again. You pay for a family meal you expect to eat together. That's the whole purpose of going out to a pub or a restaurant to have a meal together as a family prepared for you

What a horrid waste of space place, The food was absolutely terrible. There was LUMPS in the soup. And i found, what im pretty was a PUBIC HAIR in my GRAVY!!! Speaking this “gravy” it was more watered than rain. I might as-well gone and put a stock cube into a park puddle. The food was colder than my dads heart, and honestly chewy as heck. Another loss for the STAFF. Tell me why, it took 13 minute's to get me a coke. The wait for the starter was around 1 hour and there wasn’t that many of us. The service, The food, The staff AND the building is horrible.

Was an amazing night, was served by MAISIE Oliver she couldn't do anything more for us anything we asked she got us, with a lovely smile on her face, she's a credit to redcap and lovely to talk to, food was amazing and very warm and fresh and good atmosphere and bar staff very friendly and amazing.

Positive first, the food was great, I had a calzone which was swimming in garlic butter which I love, and it was delicious. The rest of our group had similarly positive experiences. The staff were lovely, all friendly and smiling but...but now we come to the negatives. The chairs felt like they were about to fall apart they needed glueing or screwing together and the upholstery was filthy. The pubco needs to close for a week and do a deep clean, I really don't want to sit on somebody else's stains.

Amy was top notch we been a few times in the last few months. We have been so impressed with her professionalism. You can see she has excellent service skills from bringing drinks to table always scanning the room to see if anyone needs anything coming to each table to see if everything is ok , a note the breakfast items has really been cooked well recently. Had a surprising visit here for breakfast today. All you can eat. Everything nice and fresh. Lovely atmosphere. I mainly do Google reviews but thought I'd do one on here as people don't give this place much credit on here. Really lovely experience will definitely be back

Arrived around 4pm, one girl on the bar and I take it it was the manager pen writing reserved signs and positioning them before offering to help her. By 4.20 ordered carvery. After queing up for 10 mins and seeing people stood waiting for roast spuds to come out we was told the Carverer quite rightly did not want to put anymore hot food on plates till the spuds came out so we sat back down for 9 mins till then. Went to queue again to find the Turkey had been taken away for 'go eat customers' so we had to wait again for more turkey. 5.16pm we finally got our food. My daughter straight away said the gammon was under cooked really salty and to chewy & fatty to eat I didn't believe this because I had witnessed staff probing the meat with a thermometer, that was until I tasted it myself when I finally managed to cut a piece off. Needless to say we won't be going there again. 😡 But on the upside my pets had an expensive feast when I got home...

Bar staff more interested in talking to staff about nite out... Carvery chef disgusting attitude and rude to other customers... Very little choice and terrible food overcooked and bad tasting. Never go here

Since the old mother redcap changed hands to Stonehouse inns I can honestly say the experience and the food have been nothing else but absolutely amazing. We had carvery all you can eat I had all three meats gammon, turkey and beef and they were all cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth all the veg was delicious and so was the gravy. This was my second visit and it didn't disappoint from the first visit. 4 happy family members and we will be back no doubt. A shout out to the fabulous staff members for looking after us.

went for the carvery, what a joke! in queue of 6 took 20 mins for the girl to slice the meat, i wanted pork which she ran out of before i eventually got served, said i would have to wait 20 mins for it so decided to have the Turkey, bone dry tasteless so was the stuffing, rest of the poor offering of the veg ! wont be going back soon, enjoy....

We went about ten days ago 4 of us went we all had carvery and enjoyed it .The staff was Very polite and we plan to go again this week to try there fish and chips hopefully we will enjoy it as much as last time.

Each time we have come here it’s the same thing. You pay for a carvery yet get told to wait whilst they “catch up on orders” whilst packing just eat orders? Surely you priorities customers in the restaurant? … anyway waited about 15 mins I go up to be told there is no beef not serving anymore. If there is going to be things missing tell your customers when they order! My partner changed his order due to this to then have to pay extra for a pizza, I got mine that hardly had anything that a carvery should have on and he was waiting 45 mins. we paid for a carvery to include everything! Really annoying. Every time this happens. We once went in and got a drink only for them to tell us after we went back up that they stopped serving. Won’t be giving it another chance just irritating Thing is it is nice but when you aren’t told that there is gonna be stuff missing etc it’s annoying cos you’re throwing money. Only one member of staff doing anything. A lovely women super helpful. The two boys working did nothing.

Disappointing. My wife described our carvery meals as like a school canteen dinner with unenthusiastic staff. I was disappointed to wait after the rest of the family were served so they could do takeaway orders then to be told no roast potatoes come back in 15 minutes. My last review was excellent here(6 years ago) and I've given it the benefit of the doubt since. Now no more.

I’ve recently moved to the area , we ordered food from the menu , think the carvery menu is a favourite to the locals We were told no pizzas were available, on leaving pizza were coming out of the kitchen ! Had to wait over a hour for food, burgers and pasta , there was food on the floor around the table, and under the table , no cleaning had been done , the staff were standing around talking ,overall the staff were friendly

The carvery was nice, however, the dessert took over an hour to arrive and was subpar. It wasn’t worth the long waiting time.

Highly recommended, reasonably priced carvery and one of the nicest cauliflower cheeses I’ve had. I would recommend the sausages on the carvery are abolished as they are not nice and dry, it’s better to just have plenty of pigs in blankets. Many thanks.

Having been to the old mother recap on many occasions for breakfast or lunch this was my worst experience..we ordered from our table with the app but was waiting ages for our drinks I had to ask a member of staff in the end to get our drinks for use ...The carvery was ok but my granddaughter ordered chicken burger and chips which was inedible..But the worst thing was my other granddaughter was charged £9 for 3 sausages for her little girl absolute rip off

Called at this place just after 1pm on a Monday. I know carvery’s can be a bit hit & miss but thought as it had only been open an hour we’d be ok…wrong!!! You pay up front for a reason. Dried out meats that looked like they were from the night before…I opted for roast beef but it was that hard no one in our family could chew through it. Stale veggies. I actually asked was there no fresh in the back to be told no. Had I not have been with family I’d have walked away. Cold hard peas, cold cauliflower, stuffing hard & the beans, mash & carrots dry beyond comprehension!!! It’s actually going to be remembered as the WORST carvery I’ve ever had - certainly not worth anyone’s hard earned money!

We often come here for carvery but decided to try pizzas tonight instead. My husband ordered pepperoni feast with stuffed crust and I ordered philly cheese steak. After about 40 minutes I went to see where our pizzas were. I was told they'd just gone in the oven. The bar staff said they had a lot if tickets on - it didn't look particularly busy to me but I suppose you never know. Our pizzas came out and we were very disappointed. Very little in way of sauce and cheese. The pepperoni feast had 11 small circles of pepperoni. The philly steak had some strands of beef on there but not much. No crispy onion bits. And the stuffed crust had little to no cheese in it. If we weren't hungry we would have sent it back or left. All in all, wish we'd stuck to carvery.

The old Mother Redcap is done up to a good standard. The ambience is very nice and the staff are lovely. My husband had the Carvery which he said was very mediocre and not quite hot enough. I had Chicken and bacon salad and a portion of chips. I think I had a full lettuce with too much dressing on .Otherwise it was OK. The garlic bread looked very un savoury so I didn't bother with it. I think they need to get there act together regarding the food because it could be a lovely pub

Went to old mother redcap on Friday 11th February with my friend Wendy , was quite busy but the service was very quick . We both had the simple chicken burger with chips . Then I had the chocolate fudge cake with cream and Wendy had the apple pie. It was lovely couldn't fault the food or service . I will be going again on the 21st February with my husband. This venue has recently changed ownership and has been fully refurbished. The atmosphere is brighter and more modern. I visited today for the first time and I was a little disappointed. Let's hope it was teething troubles.First of all I called them to check the times of the carvery. The phone was not answered at 15:00 in the afternoon, though I did try more than once. I was greeted at the bar however I could not describe it as a friendly experience. There was no server at the carvery and I had to wait several minutes. There was a wide selection of vegetables etc. Most were okay but the peas were v ery undercooked. The price for the carvery was fair however a standard pepsi Max (not a pint) was very expensive for a small pub. There was no interaction from the staff during my meal and my departure was not acknowledged. The food in general was satisfcatory and the toilets were clean and fresh

Not visited since it reopened, read the poor reviews but thought we'd give it a chance. Arrived at 5.45pm on a Saturday. Got served at the bar straight away, were we ordered drinks and 3 caveries. Found a table no problem but had to steal cutlery from another table. Went to get our food, turkey wasn't ready for another half hour, so we had a choice of beef or gammon. Beef looked very dried so we all chose gammon. The Yorkshire puddings aren't like they used to be...now small and hard. Most of the veg dishes were empty. The roast potatoes were hard in the middle and the mash was lumpy and cold. Best part was the gravy...tasty and hot. Sadly we won't be returning. Didn't expect top class but expected edible.

Stay well away! Don’t touch it - even if you had to with a barge pole! Defiantly needs Gordon Ramsey to clean the stink up. I wouldn’t feed that to my kids, even if it was the last source of grub on the planet.

decided that we would go this morning for breakfast had a look on the web at the opening times . new years eve 9am until 11pm . we turned up at 10.15 to find only 3 cars on the car park the place lit up like a christmas tree and all the doors locked . had a look through the but could not see anyone inside , if they have had to close because of corvid they could of at least put a notice up telling people and updated there web page. used like going on a sunday morning for breakfast but if this the case won`t be going again.

had xmas dinner here and we booked one of the last sittings as we didnt wish to rush, we was told we would have 2 hours for the sitting, started with the soup which was half decent, then the main, and thats where it all went downhill, the meat was dry, the roast was rock hard, the gravy was like water and for as bad as the meal was, that was the best part of the experience, the staff was rude, hanging round every 2 minutes asking if we had finished, whispering to themselves that we was taking our time on purpose, I would mind but the 2 hours we was told we would have turned into 1 hour, when the manager came over and told us she was closing and we would have to leave, and she wasn't polite about it either.The Red Cap use to be a decent place a long while ago, but with this management I really cant see it lasting much longer, a elderly couple next to us commented on the price being 4 times over what it should be, they was comparing it to where they had been the day before with some family, and where they had booked for new year, and if it had been 10 times less the price, you still didnt get what it was worth, it is the worst place I have ever been and that includes some of the greasy spoon truck stops I have been to.Please people avoid this place and save your hard earned money, if your hungry go to Greggs and have a bacon butty.

Loved it had a bit of a wait but I expected it place was busy food came out was great you get what you pay for if you want high flyer food not place for you but good pub grub can’t complain loved it will definitely be back!!

Massive queue but luckily I was 3rd in the queue, didn’t matter because it still took 20 minutes to get served, then when I went back I was 2nd in the queue again took 20 minutes to get served, my order came after a 40 minute wait, my burger had half the toppings missing and my daughters wrap was over cooked, couldn’t complain because there was only one member of staff on the rest had disappeared, when I finally got someone’s attention we was ready to go home, what a complete waste of money and 2 hours of my life I will not get back.AVOID I’m being generous giving it one star

Called on a Saturday evening 5:45pm. Can't say about the quality of the food as we were sent away because they 'are not doing walk ins'. There were only 4 of us (2 adults 2 children) and there were plenty of tables (only some had reserved signs on). No info online to say booking essential, no signage on doors, no greeter. Well you won't be getting any business from me.

ONLY reason I'm giving 4/5 is because we had pre ordered our food before we even set off to this establishment, but upon arrival were told that certain foods on the menu were missing due to the lack of an electrical fault with the ovens. Something about the food or something I didn't really understand . But what I do know the assistants and the chefs made good of a bad situation and told us that our next visit will be a 100% menu with no issues hopefully. But as I say the staff were amazing. My only quarm was the fact that we had to wait 20-30 minutes 4 our soup with the wrong bread we asked for brown we got white. But under the circumstances we overlooked it and carried on regardless. So having said all that and got it off my chest we WILL return to this place again in the near future after Xmas due to circumstances. That will more than likely be a 5 star rating, we will see ? Thought we would try this place again not much has changed decoration wise had a paint job and looks a lot cleaner . Ordered at the bar two carvarys and fish and chips we sat down and waited 10 min then I told friends go get the carvery and my fish and chips should be here say and waited 25-30 min and hadn’t come asked at the bar and the member of staff went to check in the kitchen she came out and said they was just about to prepare it now as the cheque had not gone through to the kitchen which I feel was a bit of a lame excuse as other people who had ordered from the menu had been getting there’s so for one check to go missing I think is highly unlikely. I just requested a refund for my meal as I hadn’t anymore time to wait . The friends who had the carvery said it was really good and the meat was don’t to perfection and was happy with the food they had . I will put this down to teething problems today and will try again in the future but I do feel they need to be a little more organised

Came for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. Came here last night with my father. Ashleigh served us and we couldn't have asked for better service. We both have special needs and going out can be challenging as well as overwhelming. Ashleigh was more than accomodating, checking up on us and asking if we needed anything, and due to her recommendation dad even tried and enjoyed something other than chicken wings for a once!Thank you Asheligh for making our dining experience so pleasant. We will definitely be back

Visited the new old mother redcap this week since it’s just reopened on its first night. Wasn’t sure what to expect but it looks really good and the food was nice. Served by someone Ashley I think she was called who got all the food and drinks sorted for us. Will visit again cheers

Absolutely love the food From here. Had carvery each time I have been here. Going shortly for breakfast and looking forward to it. The place is welcoming and the staff are friendly

Brilliant food and exceptionally helpful and welcoming staff. Couldn’t fault it at all. My friend and I will definitely be coming back. The carvery was delicious and very reasonably priced. 10/10.

I went mid week with friends after work. not as good as it use to be, saying that it was ok for just over £5.00, service was quick and we all had a good time.

We have been a few times and it's a very poor place THE meat was dried up and the rest was not much better will not be going again We all ways whent there when it first opend and it was good but now it's gone very poor

Following the demise of Sycamore Farm under new management, I regularly visit Old Mother Redcap which is now in my opinion the best carvery in the area. Always good food and very friendly staff. My only criticism being that the beef could be better quality, but if I want beef I normally get a pie and they are great.

I visited the Red Cap with my dad and sister for lunch. The bulk of the menu, such as sandwiches were not available to buy as it was Sunday so a carvery was the only main option. If I had wanted fish and chips it would have been over £8 which isn't good value. In the end my dad had a regular carvery which looked small to me and myself and sister just had drinks. The total came to £20.48 for one regular meal and 3 drinks. Totally not good value. The food itself looked dry and not very good. I wont be visiting there again in a hurry.

Not been here for years but called in with dad whilst passing. Friendly staff lots on offer on carvery and good value. Will call again.

Myself and my family had a lovely meal yesterday evening at the Redcap. The staff were really friendly and the food was delicious. Highly recommended.

An offer of a Vegan Nut-Roast on a sunny Sunday afternoon brought our hungry bellies to this lovely place..The smiley staff were super pleasant and helpful from the moment we arrived and made sure we were catered for without fuss :) The veggies were fresh and tasty and the Cranberry Nut Roast was to die for! Sunshine, yummy food and full bellies made our Sunday afternoon a fabulous one :)A very good find indeed!

Its been a while since I had Breakfast here, previouslt it wasn't anyrthing special.This time however it was noticed they have upped their game. Great initial impression welcoming and friendly. What a pleasent change unlike other local alternatives similar pub chain the (Full English)buffet breakfast isn't rationed , it remains serve yourself. The food was plentiful, fresh well cooked and no wait unlike other places for it to be replenished. Disappointed that the coffee is dispensed from an urn rather than fresh from a pot. On the basis of this visit I will return, hopefully they can keep the standard up .

Came here literally for the all you can eat breakfast! How can you grumble at the price! Everything was hot, tasty and not overdone as is sometimes the case with breakfast buffets. The only issues we had is, although not dirty, the place could do with a refresh. The seating has massive pieces missing in places. I understand that it used to be a place everyone raved about, I don’t think is the case anymore but we were overall happy with our visit.

I took my Gran here for a meal as she used to come here all the time with my Grandad. When we walked in, we couldn't believe how quiet it was as it used to be busy all the time.We ordered to Carverys at the bar and our drinks too. My gran couldn't decide what wine to get and the bar lady was getting impatient with her.We went to the Carvery area and we were waiting to be served for between 5 and 10 minutes before the same Lady asked us to come back in 10 minutes so the beef would be ready. We told her we didn't want beef, and my gran has difficulty walking so didn't want to walk back to her seat then back to carvery again.We waited another 5 to 10 minutes anyway whilst the chef just stood their looking at the meats and moving them around.Finally, we got served and we hardly got any meat. I got 1 sausage and 1 and a half slices of Turkey. My gran got 1 slice of Turkey and 1 slice of ham which was extremely fatty. We topped our plates up with the usual and went to eat.Well what a disappointment! Meat - extremely dry. Sausage - extremely chewy. Chips - raw on the inside. Mash - lots of little bits in that had fallen in from other surrounding food. Stuffing - rock hard and not fresh.... I could go on.We ate a few fork fulls then left it, downed our drinks and left.Never again!
