Hands down the best Sunday roast I’ve had in a long time. Food was absolutely on point and at a price that is unarguably unbeatable. Brisket beef was to die for, roast potatoes and veg in abundance, cauliflower cheese was so tasty… went for the small plate, glad I did, a feast, you really need to be a big eater to go for the large! Trust me you will not be disappointed. I am guessing the Market Inn is family run, I say this because I found the atmosphere very welcoming and friendly, staff were great and happy to chat. Will surely be returning next time we are in Holsworthy.

When we arrived the barmaid seemed surprised to see us as she did not know there was a booking for us. We went away and came back once the rooms were ready, was a bit disappointed on entering the room, bedding was clean but very creased, two pillows on one bed, one on the other, they were so flat also. No hand towels, no glasses for water, we were not welcomed by the hosts at all during the whole stay ! As it’s a pub the noise at the front of the place where everyone smoked under the bedroom windows was ridiculous, Friday night it lasted till 1.30 am, I had to ask if they could move away from the window in the end as it was so loud. The shower was very intermittent running hot and cold the whole stay. The outside entrance to the rooms was very messy and it all just felt a little unprepared. Hopefully they will tidy things up and make the rooms more presentable.

Had dinner here just stopping through on our way home from our holiday on Friday 23rd August. We rang in advance to make sure that there were tables, but were told that they weren’t busy and we could just turn up. We came in through the back from the car park which goes straight into the restaurant area, where it was completely empty. Husband immediately said “shall we go somewhere else?” Pointing out the utterly filthy carpet in the restaurant but as it was late and we had 3 tired and hungry children with us we decided to just stay put and hope for the best. Asked at the bar if we could order food, to be met with a flapping barmaid explaining that the lone waiter was already busy taking another tables order and we would have to wait about half an hour. Seemed a bit of a strange thing to say seeing as the restaurant was completely empty, and we were a bit bewildered that it would take that long just because another table of 4’s order was being taken? I then asked if we just needed to go and sit at a table but she said we needed to sit in the front area, order our food there and then we would be taken through to the restaurant area when the food was ready. Quite a strange set up and not very practical when you have 3 children, one of whom is an energetic 2 year old who kept trying to run directly out of the front door which led straight onto a busy main road. Asked the waiter if we could just sit in the restaurant but he sheepishly said we needed to wait until the food was ready. After a lengthy wait we finally got ushered through to the very dated restaurant, it seriously needs revamping. The floor is awful and the frilly table cloths look about a hundred years old. Two of the kids had lasagna, both of which we had to remove the top layer of because it had obviously been microwaved to within an inch of its life and had gone rock hard. Other child had fish bites and chips which were fine. I had the steak, which was tasteless and tough. I ordered with sautéed potatoes but it got brought out with chips. It had taken so long that I couldn’t be bothered to complain in the end and just had the chips. One thing I did refuse to pay for though was the “red wine steak sauce” which cost an extra £3 or so. It was literally brown salty water. They did refund this with no questions. Husband had the lasagna which was again burnt and then microwaved to a crisp and unseasoned. All in all it was pretty disappointing and definitely not worth the money we paid for it. Would not recommend, I’m sure there are far better places to go and eat around there than here!

Visited the Old Market Inn Holsworthy on Sunday evening 18th August , first impressions were ok we ordered a drink and pondered over the menu , deciding to stay and eat, we asked the restraunt staff if they could fit us in for a table of two but explained our time was limited and we would need to leave within 1.1/2 hrs the young waitress said it would not be a problem and took our order . We were beckoned to our table in a very acceptable 35 mins after being told the food was ready , my food was the first to arrive and after a wait of around a further 5mins my wife's order came and was hastily placed before her , my wife immediately noticed her order was wrong having frys on her plate and not the sauteed potatoes she had ordered, she called the very agitated waitress back to the table who snatched the plate back and without saying anything proceeded back to the kitchen. Not wishing to start my meal till my wife had received hers we waited a further 10-15mins but in the mean time we called the waitress over and my wife asked how much longer it would take ? the waitress shouted very loudly at my wife to just be patient , the whole restraunt fell silent which made us feel very uncomfortable, we where by now about to leave when the food arrived and was literally thrown on the table with no apology or anything said. The food we recived was of reasonable quality in the end we stayed to finish our meal and after paying the bill at the bar and complaining about the waitress attitude we left . With hind site and although that waitresses behaviour was totally unacceptable, we felt that management should not only be offering better training for front of house staff but ensuring they have enough staff on duty to cover a busy restraunt and not expect one young girl with limited capability and a short temper to be the face of what could be a very nice Inn and restraunt .

We happened on this small pub whilst visiting Devon in August. It would be hard to imagine a more British pub. Housed in a turn of the century building near the river, it exemplifies everything good about a pub. Friendly and helpful staff, a huge array of beers, and all the quintessential dishes from fish & chips and cottage pie to yorkshire pudding. If you are in Tavistock you can join the locals here for a pint and some gossip. Great place.

Found this Inn by accident on Bank Holiday Sunday evening while looking for somewhere to eat having been let down by the place we had booked to eat. The staff were very welcoming to our party of six people and one dog. They made sure we were well accommodated at the table and even bought some water for the dog. The food was quick to come and very tasty. The ‘light bite’ portions were a good size and the main dishes were just right. The service was spot on and we were asked if everything was ok not long after the meals came out. The girls really made sure everything went well with our eating experience. I’m now glad the other place we had booked let us down otherwise we wouldn’t have found the Old Market Inn. Will definitely be going back.

it was a lovely hot summer day , decided to go to the market for a drink in the beer garden , because we have in in this pub many times before , we walked outside to get to the beer garden at the rear of the pub as we had our dog with us otherwise we would have had to go through the restaurant area to get to the garden, on finishing our drinks in the pleasant garden we attempted to exit the garden the same way via the side passage but this was blocked due to a delivery van making a delivery to the pub kitchen and we could not get passed the only way to get out was through the restaurant area in the pub which we did ,no food was being served and the restaurant was empty , on passing the bar on the way out a very rude barmaid emma told us off about walking through the restaurant with our dog , we told her we had no option as the passage way was blocked , and she carried on ranting , no apology came , we will not be using this pub again ,

We visited here on Saturday evening, having tried a small village pub the previous night we were keen to try a different pub in this area. We parked in the town but when we walked down saw that parking was available. The pub was quiet, only a few other people there. We arrived at 6, on ordering drinks we asked what time food was served from the blunt answer of 6.30 was given. My partner had a pint of ale whilst I asked for a diet Pepsi. The barmaid informed me that the soft drinks were not working and pointed to a shop bought bottle of Pepsi max I said that was fine as she poured my drink it was the last of the bottle. Another staff member came out and they had a conversation about the Pepsi which went along the lines of "she's had the last of it" that was very embarrassing, it's a pub You go there to drink after all? The amount we paid for that Pepsi would of bought 2 bottles of Pepsi from the shop. We went and sat on the sofas, enjoying each other's company expecting someone to come over as it approached 6.30 but no one came. My partner went back up to the bar to ask if we should go into the restaurant area and was rudely told no the waitress would come and get us. No one came so we decided to have a game of pool, after 5 minutes of playing someone approached us with menus still very vague about where we ordered or where we would eat. We looked at the menus and although the selection of food offered looked reasonable we felt very uncomfortable. None of the staff seemed interested in us being there We finished our drinks made our excuses and left. It's hard to see what type of customers they want to attract, the restaurant area looked nice but the loud dance music gave us the impression it was more of a drinking establishment which is great if that's what you are into but it was not for us. I have never been to feel this unwelcome at any pub or restaurant I've visited before, avoid at all costs

We popped in whilst on holiday for dinner. We ordered the fish goujons for the kids and unfortunately there were bones in them which wasn't great. They'd have been better off just doing regular fish fingers than attempting their own if they couldn't guarantee fillets, especially when feeding kids. I had ribeye steak and chips which was OK but I have to say that the stilton sauce which it came with was fantastic, really delicious My husband had the scampi and chips which he said was overly greasy however, he agreed with me about the stilton sauce being really tasty.

If I could give this place zero stars, or negative, I would, but then I wouldn't be able to rate and review. Absolute horrendous service. I've never been so rudely spoken to or disrespected. I had the unfortunate luck to stay in the B&B. They do not cater for specific dietary requirements, so naturally I ended up buying my own food, only to be told that I was not allowed to eat the food which I had purchased in my room because it didn't suit the owner. I at no stage left any mess or issues for the staff, so for the owner to say that I was not allowed to consume the food I had purchased for myself, because they run a poor excuse of an establishment, is disgraceful. He was rude, aggressive and totally unacceptable. I ended up having to eat outside! The service is disgraceful and they need a crash course in customer services - definitely black listing this shoddy joint!

Went for Lamb as it is my favorite and was not disappointed. One of the tenderest joints ive eaten in a while, roasties to die for and a really good selection of vegetables. Gravy was flavourful and all the usual extras and condiments to hand. Didn't try dessert as too full but wife and kids had treacle tart with clotted cream, ice cream and cheesecake. Back to bar for another pint of Real Ale before nearly nodding off in the lounge whilst kids played some pool. Overall great carvery, beer and service, will be back again soon.

Sunday 11th September 2016, OMG never have I been to such a place like this before in my life. Never been before so after seeing advert in local paper we booked a table for 1.00pm we walked in the girl behind the bar was serving so I went up to a lady who looked like she was one of the owners and said we had a reservation for dinner at 1.00 well I have never been so rudely spoken to in any restaurant in my life, and told me to talk to the girl behind the bar, not what name is it sir I will get you sorted. Any way spoke to girl behind the bar who served us our drinks which she got wrong giving us sweet wine when we wanted medium. We were also given 4 bits of paper for our carvary. We walked in to what looked like someone's lounge awful, we went to sit at a table which was made up for 4 people and as we started to sit down a chap who I'm guessing was the other owner/chef came over and rudely said we could not sit there and pontes to a table in the corner which was so dark I need the torch on my phone to see what I was doing the table was so close to the wall I had to sit at an angle as I could not get my legs under. We did not know what to do so my wife went to ask the owner/chef guy what happens next he told her to sit down and we would be called up next to get our dinner, a waitress then came over to us and said we could go up when we liked, so we did my wife and daughter got a plate and the chef started to cut there meat my son was is front of me and the rude owner woman rushed over and snatched the plate out of my sons hands and told him I give you your plate and then gave him the plate back, the advert said 3 meats there was only beef and a small amount of lamb left. The food was awful the roast potatoes were well bloody terrible I nearly needed the dentist after biting the Yorkshire pudding it was rock hard. We could not get out quick enough, the customer services was none existent the atmosphere well what atmosphere, I would not let my dog eat there. And I your reading this as the owners of this pub/restaurant you should be ashamed a total shambles I would rather starve than ever eat in there again. JOKE

My wife and I were staying in the locality, needed somewhere for dinner and read good reviews so booked. Very warm welcome in the bar area but then entered the new(ish) restaurant area which has good-sized,substantial tables and chairs (oak?) and the Old Market is clearly making the effort to provide a 'better' offering and dining experience. I had whitebait to start followed by home-made Cornish pasty with great chips whilst my wife had pork chops (loin?) with cider and mustard cream sauce and home-made ratatouille (which is very unusual to be served); needless to say, I tried hers and it was delicious. To finish I had a large slice of a Belgian chocolate roulade with clotted cream which was fabulous; although not made in the Old Market this was locally produced and not a mass-commerial product. We were served by a delightful, solicitous lady who enhanced our welcome. I would certainly recommend the Old Market Inn (parking at the rear) for those seeking good, reasonably priced food

If you want to be served a burger with a mouldy bap and Hunters Chicken with chicken that's still pink in the middle this place is for you! Seriously, you'd save a tenner and have better food at the local greasy spoon! We thought we'd try this place as we are staying locally. We should have known really as the restaurant...if you can call it that...was totally empty. Anyway we ordered the 8oz burger and the Hunters Chicken from the specials board. When the food was bought out, I thought my hubby was joking when he said that there was mould on his bap....we made the staff aware, no apology, just took it away. ..bought it back..with a bun that looked like it'd had mould picked out of it, same chips, burger etc!!! I wanted to leave then, but hubby was starving and insisted we eat up. Surely it was just a slip up....well the dark brown chips suggested they'd been either double fried or cooked in old fat, but hey no worries, on we ate...then after I'd given hubby my, microwaved bacon off my chicken breast I got stuck in. Lots of BBQ sauce mmn...then PINK yes Pink chicken in the middle! I had to leave and relieve myself of the disastrously foul food! No one apologised, no one asked if we'd enjoyed our meal or why we'd left it. So in total 23 quid for beer, wine, mouldy burger bap, old chips and uncooked chicken.. Never again. I'm leaving a review in the book at the cottage we hired too, to warn others staying in Clawton! If I become unwell tonight I'll know why and so will the authorities!

The gammon topped with a fried egg we had as a main course was well presented with home made chips, super tempura onion rings, peas, mushrooms and tomato. Nothing fancy just good hot home cooked food.

the sunday carvery is very good, choice of 3 meats plenty veg and a good range of real ales plus the usuals ! very popular so worth booking in advance, in good weather there are tables on the decking and the garden at the rear of the pub, there is a small car park at the rear of the pub but we found it better to park in the waitrose carpark and walk over the road !!

We have just taken an apartment in Holsworthy and this was only our second day measuring up and getting things together there. It was a pretty miserable day and we needed some lunch, so we headed through the town looking for somewhere to eat, Rain and major roadworks in the town centre wasn't helping trade that day, even though it was market day, so when we spotted the Old Market Inn and saw through the windowthat it looked quite cheery, despite customers being thin on the ground, so we went in, bought a drink and asked to see the menu. I don't eat meat, so there wasn't much to choose from, but the veggie lasagne was home-made, so I went for that, and Pauline asked for ham egg & chips. The lasagne was also advertised as being with chips, but as another dish came with saute potatoes, I asked for those and they were happy to oblige. The two dishes came to just over £15 altogether, so I wasn't expecting much, but both were well produced and very substantial. The chips and the sautes were excellent and the ham was right up to the standard you'd expect in a country town. My lasagne was much more interesting than the usual pub version. The four stars reflects a somewhat limited lunchtime menu, but we'll certainly be back there regularly once we've moved ihn properly and hope to be able to bump it up to five when we've tried the evening menu and the carvery!

Went here for a family meal, quality of food was poor, meat was very tough, plates were cold and same with the food. Chips and onion rings were very greasy. Staff were very rude apart from one. Didn't feel welcomed and we felt rushed into leaving. Poor value for money. Won't be visiting again and personally wouldn't recommend it.

We arrived at 8:45pm on a Friday in August. Their sign said they served food till 9:00pm. I asked to see the menu. I was told I could not. The menu would secured behind the bar until the chef could be consulted. The couple in front of us were allowed to order main courses only. We were left at the bar waiting. And waiting. Eventually the bar maid took pity on us and asked the chef if we could eat. It is now 8:55pm. She returned to tell us the answer was 'no'. The miserable waitress did not return. We left hungry.

I went out for a Sunday carvery here with my wife's family. I am gluten free and we rang in advance and were informed that was not a problem. On arrival at were asked "Can I help you?", to which we said "We have a reservation for 7" and the response was an unconfident "Really?". All was fine and we confirmed the gluten free, but it was an unsettling start. We had to wait a little while but service was fairly speedy. We went up for food, I mentioned I was the gluten free and was given no reassurance other than I had gluten free gravy coming. I had to guess what I could have of the veg.The food itself was really tasty and my gluten free gravy was prepared especially. It was very flavoursome if a bit watery. The dessert board wasn't looking hopeful for me, which I didn't mind, but we then discovered there was an ice cream side. So when I came to ordering I asked if any of their ice cream was gluten free. The response was a fairly sulky "Oh I very much doubt so", which surprised me as they had a lot of flavours. They went to check and came back and informed me I couldn't have any. I personally highly doubt they knew what they were looking for, but this is suspicion at this point.Irrespective, my main issue with this restaurant was the constantly poor customer service. From our cold and sarcastic greeting to the lack of friendliness when choosing my carvery to the unapologetic selection of desserts I couldn't eat, I wasn't impressed. The food was excellent and the staff were clearly friendly to locals, but it is one of the least friendly restaurant experiences I have had of late.

Went for a Sunday carvery. No complaints about the food but nothing positive to really say either. The restaurant was very dimly lit the bar service was sooo slow and the staff were miserable and moody. The young girl handing out the plates is a credit to that place.

This pub is fine for a simple meal, but not inspired at all. The Sunday lunch was good and tasty but other meals have not rated highly with my family. I feel they could up their game if they could be bothered. It just seems to be more pub than grub.

I went here after working all day, looking for a nice meal. The atmosphere was unfriendly. Had to order at the bar where I was ignored in favour of the television. I ordered a chicken breast with mushroom cream sauce and potato mash. The meal was practically inedible as the chicken was so dry. I think it had been re-heated and not cooked fresh. Very disappointing. Expensive too for what you get.

Reasonable sized double room with en-suite. Quiet enough until the first lorries of the morning come rumblng past the window, but that's no fault of the hotel. Breakfast is perfectly adequate and plenty of it.Certainly ales on tap, but nobody drinking them whilst we visited, those I did sample were warm and stale from being sat in the lines all day without any pull through.Nice place to stay in the town and not far from Bude, all shops and other amenities are within a 5 minute walk. Staff pleasant and polite.

This is one of the most enjoyable pubs I've found here in Devon, if you enjoy the pleasure of drinking real ales. The pub has won the North Devon CAMRA pub of the year in 2012 and 2013, because it's beer is so good. With great food and a varied menu, a visit is a must.

The barmaid who checked me in won't win any Cheerful Barmaid of the year awards, but the evening staff were very nice. Room was modern, clean, and spacious. This pub sells great real ale, worth the trip alone. Food was not so good. Think of 10 pub grub meals and that is the menu here, possibly the most uninspiring menu I've ever seen. There was a special but I didn't fancy fishcakes, so I went for the sausage and mash because it came with veg and no chips. The mash and veg were great but the sausages were very cheap and nasty, Tesco basics range quality. Please buy good food and ill pay the extra. My room,2, suffered from some serious road noise which woke me up at 5 am and I couldn't get back to sleep. Room 1 might be better. The nice rooms, fair prices and great beer save this place, I'd stay again, but in another room.

I've been to Holsworthy a few times while staying at a nearby fishing lodge with family and every time I make sure to visit The Old Market Inn at least a few times during my stay. It's one of the few pubs I can genuinely describe as perfect inside and it has deserved every award it's won. I absolutely love this pub.The pub/bar area is quite large inside with comfy seating, traditional pub décor and a pool table. The bar itself is full to the brim with any spirit you could wish for, a good selection of lagers and standard bitters, a great selection of draft and traditional scrumpy ciders (including ones from local cider farms). And the ales? There's always a great selection, about three or four on hand pumps and a further six or seven fresh from the oak barrel (again, most of which are locally produced and for a Devon/Cornish ale drinker like myself it's Heaven). It feels like being part of a mini beer festival every time. It's all very reasonably priced too which is always a bonus (£3.30 average per pint). As for the staff I have always been made to feel very welcome and the manager Lee in particular is a true master of his trade. He runs the bar with a real passion and pride which definitely shines through into the pub itself. The food is also excellent. I've only eaten a few times there but it's always been good, hearty, traditional pub food with a nice, home cooked quality to it. I don't believe you can eat in the bar but the restaurant is lovely, with the waiting staff calling you through just before your food is ready. Sundays are always busy for lunch so it's probably best to book in advance but otherwise we've never had a problem getting food there. The pub also hosts comedy and music nights too featuring pretty decent acts as seen on TV. While I haven't stayed at the inn myself, one of our travelling party would not stay anywhere else while in Devon and says the breakfasts are gorgeous. My only negative is that it's ruined other pubs for me. I wish more pubs were run to the same standard as the Old Market Inn. Well done to all the staff on keeping such a wonderful place!

We knew this when it was a temperance hotel but what a change. Great food and choice of menu. Big plus was reasonable drinks prices.Service first class. Will definitely visit again when next in Holsworthy or anywhere near

2012 North Devon CAMRA pub of the year and for the beer it's great, with a good range available, along with friendly service. As for the food, if you eat meat, then a good range of dishes on both the (all meat) specials board and on the menu. If however you're a vegetarian or pescatarian, then, on this day at least, not so good. Very limited. We had the beer battered fish which was fine, without being exceptional, and certainly good value. The bar area is pleasant, as is the seating area at the front, but we felt spoilt a little by the large pool table by the front door. The restaurant area at the back is I'm afraid, dull. Probably some good reason, but would it not be better to swop these areas around? All that said, it's a nice pub, good beers and with friendly service.

Second night away at a B&B, we thought we would get a meal in town and liked the look of the Old Market Inn, so gave it a try. We were glad we did. The meal and ambiance of the place was great and also represented good value for money. One small criticism I would make is that my meal went cold quickly. Had the plates been warmed first I don’t think this would have been a problem. If we visit the area again I will certainly use the Old Market Inn, but this time leave the car behind and try some, if not all, of their 8 or 9 real ales.

If ever in the Holdsworthy area, you have to stop into this pub. The landlord, Lee and his staff are all extremely friendly (until they get to know you, when they take the mickey mercilessly) as are the locals; the food is top notch - if there on a Sunday, go for their carvery, but book first, it's understandably popular. The large selection of good beers (and also a cocktail menu) will keep you there for a while if you're not careful so it's best to have a nominated driver with you just in case.Never stayed there, but friends have & they've all said the rooms are excellent too.

We had a lovely cream tea here and sat upstairs, overlooking The Quay, enjoying the view. We had two huge homemade scones each and there was plenty of jam and clotted cream to go with them...delicious. The staff were friendly and the service was good, so we were happy.

Tourist trap! Food was nice but absurdly overpriced, £100+ for 4 fish and chips and drinks, crazy price considering you have to collect your own food and it's served in paper trays without proper cutlery. Boutique restaurant price for takeaway food.
