Ordinarily the vegetarian options on previous visits have been great but this time was really disappointing and extremely pricey at that - paid £15 for one very small portobello mushroom, compared to near enough the same price for a chicken curry (with small pieces of meat), and a vegetable tagine that was heavier on the couscous than the veg. The staff are friendly enough and the place is lovely. Although it was a cold Autumnal evening and they wouldn't put the fire on, so didn't feel particularly cosy. Desserts at £8 a pop were over priced too.

This pub is one of the best. Even though we were only here for a week, we used it three times for food and drinks. We couldn’t have been made more welcome. The food was great as was the service. We would certainly use it again if in the area. Highly recommend.

How many good reviews can you keep writing about one place. We come back here at least once a year and it never fails us. We stay in one of the dog friendly rooms and meet our Devon friends in the pub. We eat here in the evenings. As always on our visit this time it was as good as ever. Friendly, spotlessly clean and the food superb. Once again thank you to every single one of you.

This pub manages to welcome visitors and obviously have a loyal following of locals. I booked a table only just before going and was met by name which was lovely. The food was good, I had the ribeye steak and chips and it was so large I couldn't manage one of the lovely sounding desserts. The pizzas also looked great! It was also dog friendly and indeed dog welcoming with treats on the bar. Definitely worth a visit when you're in the area.

This is a great pub, fabulous atmosphere and friendly locals. We went because the menu looked amazing, all our favourite things! The food is really good but the portion sizes are quite small for what you are paying and in comparison with other places. Avoid the desserts, they are £8, which is a lot, and really tiny - but nice. Our bill was pretty big for 2 people and we left hungry!

Sunday dinner... Come on! It arrived on a huge plate, with several dishes of EXTRA veg just incase you were a small family masquerading as one man :-D Seriously though, we walked from Morchard Bishop while on holiday before Christmas as the London Inn was fully booked. We certainly had the calories to get us back after the massive, super-tasty dinner, and a few well kept Exeter Brewery beers, and I didn't so much care about the cold drizzle as I had my beer jacket on. The bar looked great, full of characters, the way a 'local' should be. If I lived round that way, I'd be quite happy to join that merry throng regularly.

We ended up at this lovely pub, due to another one randomly being closed. The food is proper home cooked grub and lovely. The bar itself appeared to have mainly locals who were all friendly. There is also a pool table, which now is almost unheard of in a pub. We had the pizzas and they were delicious. We’re vegetarians, but one of us doesn’t have diary either and the staff catered for that, the best they could. The only thing I would say is that on the menu, there isn’t a great selection for anyone who is dairy free and even quite limited (nowadays) for a veggie, but the rest of the menu looked lovely. It is also dog friendly. Staff very friendly.

On walking a mile to the only pub for a fair way was very worried to walk in and see dozens of drunk people all over each other! No hand sanitiser, no social distancing - clearly no COVID precautions here! But carry on and hope for the best. The waitresses were good, however: My partner and I ordered Garlic mushrooms on sour dough for starter which came on french bread! For Main I ordered a “Home made” Hawaiian pizza that clearly came from a cheap bulk buy and had no Pineapple. Politely saying I couldn’t eat the horrid pizza and by the way the starters were not right I was then glared at by all. The landlady came and argued that they only have sour dough bread, even though there was a bread basket on arrival with the french bread. She then argued that she poked through my pizza and found some pineapple! Awful experience and the land lady and landlord had clearly been the wrong side of the bar all day, we couldn’t wait to leave. We are both 51 and eat out regularly, and can’t remember such a badly run pub in our lives! Do not waste your time or money here!

Been here before but this pub does not seem ro be following any form of COVID rules. Nobody asked us to sign in, no visible direction of flow, no masks by staff and no screens at bar. Locals buying and being served at bar and some even sitting on bar stools. Whilst understood the necessity for a reduced menu, the new style menu has very little choice and rather like a cafe menu. Overheard landlady saying COVID no worse than a bout of flu.

Booked here to stay over last minute for a Saturday evening, had great reviews but really wasn’t our bag at all. We found out on arrival that there was a band on, which was quite fun for a bit, but unfortunately it was right outside our room meaning we had no privacy at all. Also people stayed up and outside (loudly) until about 1.30 am meaning we couldn’t sleep until the small hours. We ordered dinner, but I really didn’t enjoy it sadly. I don’t know how my burger had been cooked but it was raw in places and well done in others, I’m guessing it was microwaved.Breakfast was better and the landlady and landlord were lovely. However we didn’t really enjoy our stay, it just wasn’t our cup of tea at all.

My husband and I booked for dinner last night to make the most of the government’s meal deal Offer. We have been very apprehensive about going out since lock down, so it was really reassuring to see that all the social distancing measures and sanitising was in place. After ordering our meal I wanted to change my order! ( a pain I know) So i asked the waitress she said she would Check, the landlady came over and said they had already started cooking it. But she said she was happy to change it for me. How kind was that. Was really pleased with the response from her and the staff and food were really good. We will be back again soon. Karina x

We booked for a meal for 4. When we arrived both the bar and garden were full. No social distancing and no COVID-19 safety measures in place as far as I could tell. No screens at the bar, no face masks, etc etc. people just mingling around the bar area. We had to ask for the book to record our details for track and trace (I don't believe we would have been asked if we hadn't asked for the book). Both table staff and managers all standing far too close to us and came right up to the table and we had to ask them to step back. We had recently returned from Cornwall and had witnessed some very impressive measures in restaurants to ensure people were safe - eg outside areas only, having a little side table to put the food/drinks on so staff could social distance, bamboo recycled dishes, individual portions of condiments (as recommended by the government), all staff wearing face masks etc etc - none of these measures were in place here - not a face mask in sight! Food was fine, but we won't be returning due to lack of effective protective measures.

The Landlady was warm and friendly and professional in ensuring she got us to sign in the book. Great local beers and cider and excellent pub lunch with the nicest and lightest of batter on a whiter than white piece of cod. Great chips and when I asked for extra tartare sauce it was with me pronto. I would suggest in these COVID time’s we all need to work together and it seems this Pub is pulling its weight and I hear the locals feel the same and long may it continue.

We had a terrible experience here. When we arrived the pub was buzzing and it was impossible to keep one metre away from other visitors let alone two. The waitress who showed us to our table had no clue about social distancing and I had to keep moving away from her. We then sat and waited, and waited. We eventually got drinks and then waited and waited. Food eventually came. We both ordered mushroom burgers with mozarella. My daughter's was OK, my mozarella was a hard cold blob that had not seen the oven. We waited and waited until we saw a waiter and then I handed mine back. My daughter was far too far through her meal for me to order anything else, so I had nothing. We ordered ketchup and waited and waited. The worst part is that the bill presented to us had both meals on it and the landlady argued that the meal was perfect. She also wasn't prepared to take any negative feedback. She eventually deducted the meal with absolutely no apology about spoiling our evening.

The meal on friday was top drawer husband had pizza I had battered chicken and chips so we went again Saturday. We waited ages but it was busy so understandable. My husbands meal, pie and chips was good but I ordered fish pie which had three flakes of fish in it. No sauce, no cheesy mash. Just mashed potato in a dish. I complained and the manager was lovely and didn't charge me. I was not made to feel bad about complaining. Its a lovely pub a little lively for me. I would recommend the food and would go back again despite my pie because three meals were excellent. And the dogs were made welcome.

I hate giving a bad review and this is only the 3rd ever. I visited this pub with a group of friends for dinner. 3 of us had pre-ordered the pie of the day, which was steak & ale. The pastry was so dry and hard that the KNIFE would not go through and where the meat was near the top, it was dark brown and dried up. Despite telling the two servers that it was poor, no one came to see or apologise. I will not be visiting again.

Decided on this quaint old pub for lunch as we were in the area so glad we did. We were welcomed by the landlady and shown to a table straightaway. The menu was very varied and we were pleased to see that smaller portions for a lot of the choices were offered. The ladies in the party opted for the scampi with a very nice salad and lasagne with garlic bread. Both were tasty and well presented and just the right amount for smaller appetites. The men chose a steak and ale pie with chips and peas and a club sandwich both of which were delicious. We would recommend this inn and will return when we are next in the area.

My brother in law booked us in for Sunday roast. The menu said to ask for vegetarian options.I was told for the roast you can have the vegetables, but not roast potatoes as they are cooked in beef dripping, you can have mash or boiled potatoes. I asked if there was anything that came with it like nut roast, no just vegetables. They also charge full price for this. I queried this & they said they would deduct £1.00. I asked them if the thought this was fair that I should pay this when other diners were getting roast beef, suet pudding & roast potatoes. I was told vegetarians usually pay the full price for the vegetables. I told the landlady/manager how disappointed I was & she was defiant, unapologetic & couldn't care less.

Friendly pub that I have known since childhood. Everywhere very smart and clean but the addition of two heavy large armchairs in the woodburning stove area makes the bar area look very cramped, and they look out of place. I had a fish and chip lunch and was disappointed with the food for the first time. The chips had the taste of potato cooked the day before and then deep fried on the day. The batter on the fish was flat and more like a skin than a batter. The fish itself was delicious. I have eaten at The Malt Scoop many times before and enjoyed the food.

Oh wow, what a fantastic find, can't wait to go back. We arrived at 8.55pm just as the kitchen was closing. But we were welcomed so beautifully by all the staff and regulars. I have an allergy and they so diligently checked the ingredients with me. I had red Thai curry.. Absolutely delicious and excellent value too. Everything was 5 star. Despite being so late we had a very relaxed meal. Would wholeheartedly recommend and look forward to returning.

A roast dinner is my favourite and this meal was exceptional. Having had a roast dinner from various places over the uk, even going to Harrods carvery, which was very good, THIS meal was first class. Initially we thought it was quite expensive, but the portions, the 7 fresh vegetables, the gravy, the roast potatoes, the yorkies all topped with carrot chips soon put that thought to bed. It was worth every penny and we can't wait to go back again very soon. The chef is first class and the young lady that served us was friendly, all in all a very good experience. Don't miss out on this gem in Lapford in Devon, and have a truly Devine dining experience.

This is still a proper English village pub but with extremely modern and well equipped accomodation and views over miles of rolling fields and grazing sheep. Good choice of beers, lively atmosphere, perfect landlady and a delicius generous breakfast. Well worth a visit

Obviously a popular place with the locals. We were made welcome and ordered our food which arrived promptly, was hot and was served on hot plates. I foolishly had the starter of garlic mushrooms which wasn't a problem until the pie of the day arrived with all the trimmings. Whilst I tucked in with relish, unfortunately my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I had to admit defeat returning several chips and a lot of the veg back to the kitchen. Would certainly recommend this place to anyone who likes good food and has a big appetite.

We went here on a Sunday for a family meal, of about 20 of us. Some of us were slightly late getting to our booking. So we did order later than planned but food then took a very long time to come out. Well over an hour. However when the food arrived it was very tasty and everybody enjoyed it. Its a nice cosy pub with a very nice feel to it.

We stayed 2 nights here while attending a Wedding nearby. The guest accommodation is in a converted barn at the rear of the pub and completely separate. It has lovely views over the surrounding countryside. The room was newly completed and was very comfortable with a high standard of finish throughout. The bed linen, towels, carpeting and all finishes are of good quality. The bed is particularly comfortable. Linda is a very friendly and helpful host. We enjoyed two great breakfasts here and the food is of good quality.

Locate the pub by chance as our intended venue was closed Monday lunchtimes. The landlady was very accommodating and friendly. They have a great well priced menu. My husband tried the herb crusted rack of lamb with spring onion mash and I had the lasagne made with local ruby red mince - both were delicious. Hope to return soon.

We ate here twice during our short stay between Christmas and New Year. Although it was not our local it was well worth the short 10 minute drive from Down St Mary. Excellent food and great atmosphere.

We stayed here for five nights bed and breakfast. What a treat was in-store for us. Newly completed accommodations all finished to a very high standards. The breakfast also matches the same standards all freshly cooked to order with good sized portions. The staff are all very friendly and very helpful. Nothing is to much bother. The bar is well stocked with good range of local beers and ciders. A great atmosphere with the locals all very friendly and welcoming. A great place to stay and eat with a very good dinning menu if you decide to have your meals there. You will not find any better eatery locally .

We ate here on a Friday evening and we were so impressed. The food was great, service was great, atmosphere was lively and the landlady was one of the best I have ever met. Would I eat here again, yes in fact we have booked to take our family to there next Wednesday. There is just one complaint the servings are big, but if that is my only complaint then I have to say wow not a bad complaint.

So, as above I can't comment on the food (although my wife has eaten there and said it was excellent, girls night out so I missed that!) but simply as local pub it is excellent. The beer is good, the service is friendly, a lovely, though small, outside area for us smokers (yes, I know, I know) so all in all a great place for a few beers. Personally I just wish it was walking distance away but not much to be done about that!

Stayed here for New Years Eve 2024. We chose the pub / hotel for its remote location and lack of fireworks (we have dogs and one is traumatised by loud noises) - from the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. A quintessential English pub with wonderful, nicely designed and spacious rooms and very comfy beds (we had Beech and Birch). The owners and locals were very friendly and inclusive, taking care to make us feel welcome. We felt very well looked after. Breakfast was delicious (full English) and served with locally made tea and coffee (Miles, made in Porlock) and unlimited juice. We are happy that this place is only 50 mins from where we live because we will definitely be back for lunch and will find an excuse to stay again soon, I’m sure… highly recommend. Thanks to everyone there for a great stay! Sam and Nick Clarke
