Both excellent food and service for a very reasonable price. The Tonkotsu was amazing.

Been here a few times now, more than reasonable pricing. Amazing service from the host and all the food I have ordered has been amazing. The decor inside is cozy and the atmospheric music is very relaxing I will continue to come here as it is quickly becoming one of my favourite places to eat out.

Reasonable price and portion. The salmon bento was a bit salty from my taste but perfectly fine as a standard bento dish. Sushi was well presented and reasonable priced. Overall a good dining experience.

Not welcoming at all, ramen was noodles in broth prawns external. Recently went to Kyowa and the difference is astonishing

⭐ 1/5.Terrible service experience. The waiter gave us menu and said nothing at first. And we waited a long time for someone to take our order, tried making eye contact multiple times, but were completely ignored. When I finally said “Hello” as that waiter passed by, he didn’t even look at us and just walked away. Later, he came back—not to take our order—but to tell us that outside drinks weren’t allowed(Why you not mentioned it before and that’s not your excuse to being rude to customers). Only after that did he finally ask what we wanted to eat. His attitude was rude, very impatient and dismissive. We didn’t order and just left the store and heading to Yo sushi which is not far away too. Food aside, no one wants to pay for this kind of disrespectful service. Plenty of other restaurants in Plymouth—definitely not coming back here.

It was very tasty and everything was perfectly salty. The interior has lots of cool art and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The people were really nice and gave us a free dessert as it was my birthday. Thank you very much

Got a takeaway from here sushi and sashimi very fresh, to point tuna had no fishy taste. Don't just go for the sushi, hot food also great, had the pork Katsu, and even the rice was amazing. I also got the red bean dorayaki despite not liking beans (where I heard Japanese people rate it), and enjoyed it. Nice change from standard takeaway options, worth the price.

Really lovely family feel run restaurant. Delicious authentic Japanese food. I went with my Japanese Dad who highly approved. Excellent service, very friendly and affordable for the quality. Highly recommend.

No real atmosphere, but it was late on a cold Sunday night. Food and service was excellent though. Although green tea was via a tea bag.

Katsudon, although a bit simplistic looking, has a great texture and flavour. Nigiri 🍣, on the other hand, is far too big, making it very difficult to eat. It also has too much rice compared to the fish.

Gyoza (both chicken and veg) were very tasty. Tonkotsu was very good, as well. Veg miso was tasty, although a bit more broth would have not hurt. Very little choice of hot drinks, but Japanese tea is worth a try (give it time to infuse). The place itself is rather basic (some nice posters on the walls).

For me, this is a little gem in Plymouth and brought back memories of when I went to Japan. The service was fantastic with the lovely team checking to see if I was okay with my food. I had the Chicken Katsu Curry and this filled me right up; mega tasty as well! It's a fairly small place and I went during one of their less busy times, but even so, it was nice to disconnect from the rabble of the main street and other greasy food shops! Fully recommend if you want a cosy meal!

We booked a table for 7 for our daughter’s 19th birthday. Unfortunately due to an illness (surgery) we couldn’t all make it to the restaurant. So instead we decided to order takeaway so we could all still enjoy the food from Oishi together. We cancelled the table booking and explained why, then pre-ordered the food for collection so that the restaurant had plenty of time to make it for when we wanted it. Not only was it ready exactly on time, but they had included some extra Nigiri, and a special birthday message for our daughter. The friends that we had invited had visited Japan and they were amazed at how fantastic the food was. They said it was exactly as they had in Tokyo, which is absolutely our experience too. Thank you so much Oishi, for being so helpful and kind, and for the message and extra food. Our daughter was so happy. And as always, your food was exceptional.

Lovely food at reasonable prices

Dined in for sushi, which was good but the rolls were a little big. I then ordered the ramen on Deliveroo at a separate occasion. The ramen broth lacked any depth and didn’t have much flavour to it. The pork was extremely thin and disappointing. The noodles themselves were nice and bouncy. Wouldn’t order the ramen again but the sushi is nice.

My family and I are quite regulars here and we absolutely love it! They have the best sushi in Plymouth! A wide variety, reasonably priced and all freshly made by the owner and her daughter. The staff are lovely and attentive. Whenever a relative or friend ask for restaurant recommendations, this is always among the top three. It never disappoints!

I've been here twice now. And the first time, I ordered sushi rolls and the rice in it tasted a bit strange. Not sure if it was the quality or how it was prepared. Came back a second time and ordered the katsudon (deep fried breaded pork cutlet with eggs) and tendon (tempura rice bowl), and those were both fantastic. Great flavors and everything was fried nicely and was crisp. These were both my favorite dishes when I lived in Japan. Very reasonably priced as well.

We are a blended family of British and Japanese, and we’ve been eating food from Oishi for a few years now and it occurred to me that I’ve never written a review. Oishi is absolutely the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Plymouth. We’ve eaten regularly at Koishii, Yukisan and Kuku (I’m not including Yo Sushi as it’s just too commercial to ever be considered authentic!). And as an authentic Japanese restaurant, Oishi wins, hands down. The food is freshly cooked and absolutely delicious. The portions are decent and the flavours really represent those of restaurants in Japan, as well as the way our family cooks and enjoys Japanese dishes at home. When we first started eating at Oishi, we were often the only people in the restaurant. Now we have to book in advance to secure a table as they are so busy. The popularity is well deserved. It’s hard to find such an affordable Japanese restaurant in the entire UK. Thank you Oishi staff for bringing the best Japanese food to Plymouth!

This place is amazing, the service is outstanding and the food delicious. Everything I tried was cooked to perfection, the flavours are truly Japanese and the ambient is cozy and warm. One of the best Japanese restaurants in Plymouth for sure. I will certainly come back / take-away again! 😁

Really disappointing. Food wasn't very flavoursome. Had tempura mixed fish with veg. Only 2 pieces of fish and was £10 as a starter. Teriyaki chicken, thin chicken breast and sauce thin and tasteless. Shame as that we might have found a gem

Well...the prices are cheap for this near the centre, but...there wasn't much substance or taste. I had tempura moriarty, which is battered bits of veg with 1 piece of fish and no rice, for £10.90, and bombadil veg for £11, that had rice in it. My wife had a few slivers of chicken breast and a load of rice. Add to that 2 diet cokes and 3 mini spring rollers, that puts you South of £41 ....

Their Tankastu Ramen is 100% the best ramen me and my girlfriend have had of all the places we've been to. I'm actually quite gutted we like to go to different places and try their ramen because I don't want to go anywhere else now it was so good here!

The food is glorious, the staff are a pleasure and the atmosphere is relaxing. This is one of the gems of Plymouth. Highly recommended!

Food and service were equally all I could ask for. I have been eating a lot of sushi recently, and this is definitely the best in recent memory (...though it has been mainly discount meal deal sushi lol). I wanted eel sushi, and I got eel AND seared salmon roll, so I'm a happy birthday fella. I have been to every sushi place in Plymouth, and I do believe Oishi is the best :) Item ordered: Shibuya Uramaki

The ramen was good. However, the agedashi tofu we ordered was not what we expected. Their tofu came with a very sweet sauce and thick batter.

Always quiet which is a shame as lovely people and great sushi. Better than overpriced yo-sushi 200m away!

Cosy family run place with simple food.

I’ve been planning this for a while. Had lunch with my teen on the 15th July, and as other reviews said it didn’t disappoint. We had the fried squid balls and seaweed salad as our starters, then a bowl of ramen and a £26 set sushi meal . All portion sizes were generous and pretty prompt coming out. The sushi that came with my set meal was pretty large compared to chain restaurants or supermarket bought, so I got full, and it was all so lovely and fresh. Outside and inside is pretty average and understated but you won’t be disappointed.

What a fantastic little restaurant! Came here for my partner's birthday lunch along with some friends and our kids. The service was polite, attentive and professional, every question was answered diligently. High quality and fresh ingredients throughout all courses, everything went down well and there was not a scrap left in sight. The katsu curry sauce was one of the best I've tried, along with some of the best cooked rice. The bento box was a bargain considering the portion size was huge and all our small plate dishes were reasonably priced too! We'll certainly be returning!

The food was a wonderful experience, service excellent and plenty of parking nearby. We all immensely enjoyed our meal and probably ate more than usual, just to savour what was, for us, the best Japanese food we have ever had in the UK. It is a small restaurant with basic amenities but keenly priced and we will definately be back.

My daughters birthday so we ordered a large lunch. Wanting to take home the majority of the food we were amazed they only allowed us 2 small takeaway dishes. Despite asking for another one they refused and said we must just squeeze all the food together. After spending £65 this left us very upset. Won't be going back

DO NOT USE this place through Deliveroo. They use their own drivers who are incompetent. My address is clear as day and I order through Deliveroo on a weekly basis with no issues whatsoever. We live in saltram meadows housing estate and the delivery driver opted to take the clear construction route that is closed to the public instead of looking for another way into the estate they chose to return the food to the store. The number on the receipt was a complete different one to our mobile number on the account, it even started in 020 and the driver supposedly attempted to call us a couple times before turning around. After waiting for hours we decided to Call Deliveroo who said we needed to contact the restaurant as they use their own drivers. The restaurant refused to refund us or re deliver the food as they said the road into the estate was closed but anyone with any common sense and a phone would of seen clearly how to get to our adress, like any other delivery driver or postman we’ve ever had. We’re now £25 out of pocket and no food with no help from either Deliveroo or oishi.

I come here once a week for a treat and I always look forward to it Welcoming staff who are always smiling and respectful every time I've been in and the food is absolutely delicious and so cheap (i rarely spend over £20 and its 2 small plates, a main, and a drink), I genuinely can't get enough of it, its almost addictive I look forward to it every week 🍲

Good food, good price and very friendly.

A non-descript shop front just off Plymouth's main street. Do not let the decor put you off. It may be a little dated but the food is well worth it. We had a variety of starters: tempura prawns, gyoza and teriyaka. All amazingly tasty, arrived promptly and was hot. Main was a set meal of nigiri, mini rolls, uramaki and again, they were spot on. There was a good mix of octopus, sweet beancurd, salmon etc. Perfect for the three of us. Presentation was good. We also had sake and at £14 for about a half-bottle, was a nice addition to the meal. For three of us with starters, mixed platter, sake and a coke was just short of £60. I feel this is very good value. We will certainly be back again and whilst we were there, it was a busy lunch and popular and I can see why.

Yeah…I’m not coming here ever again. This just isn’t it. I’ve been here twice, the first time I just ordered some hand cut rolls and they weren’t too bad. Second time round, I dined in with some friends and when the food came out is was really disappointing. I don’t like giving bad reviews, but I’m sorry to say this wasn’t the best food experience I’ve had in Plymouth. We got an array of dishes on their menu - gyoza, two different types of donburi, sashimi, takoyaki, chicken wings, and the only thing that wasn’t that bad was the miso soup. They put too much sugar in the teriyaki chicken and chicken yakitori sauce. The chicken wings had more bone that meat and we’re the size of a pinkie. The takoyaki needed more octopus in it and the sashimi was really not fresh, and looked dull in colour. I think if you do come here, just stick to the hand cut rolls or nigiri since they are always neatly presented and the prices aren’t too bad.

It was really comforting for me to have found this place. I was dying for a sushi, and in the previous restaurant I stopped by (in the Barbican) they treated me like sh!t. Here, at oishi, they didn't pay attention to how I was dressed or that I was (obviously) wet because it had been raining since an hour earlier. They treated me just as well as any other client there. They were cordial, attentive, and my rolls were delicious and gorgeous!! I ate with my eyes!! Price is super fair and there are plenty of options for various tastes.

A nice little place with friendly staff. The food was delicious as well as being a reasonable price. They offer a large and varied selection, quite difficult to decide, would definitely visit again.

Food was okay too much rice on the rolls. Service was not very good as we went at lunchtime which had no one there Except us and it took a little while for them to serve us and getting the bill was a challenge to get their attention. Plates were still left on other tables from previous customers. The staff speak Cantonese and was commenting that all we wanted to eat was sushi. I hope the staff will be more mindful speaking in Cantonese in front of customers next time.

Service and food here is always fantastic. I've spent a great amount of time in Japan and the food here is as close as it gets and is the real deal. Polite staff who make you feel welcome and deliver an amazing experience every time I go.

We were really disappointed with our order, certainly not worth £95 for four people! Almost all the food was over salted - especially the vegetable spring rolls. We waiting over an hour and a half for delivery, which the online app was not updated with. We called a couple of times to be told by a brash and rude person that their driver was not there yet and he'd be another 20 minutes to collect it. Very disappointing when it finally arrived and half of it was cold, and all of it was underwhelming. No real flavour to any of it. Do not recommend.
