We stopped here earlier in the year and found good service and good food so returned with friends to find rude and abrupt service. Food was ok, but felt like had to gulp it down and go as so unwelcome. The woman serving was abrupt and sullen and it was not busy, so that cannot be the excuse. On the way back we stopped at the Otter Valley the other side of the road which was FAR superior in every way.

Stopped in today on our way home to Exeter and can honestly say we have never experienced service so rude! The waitress/owner/server was unpleasant, unwelcoming and made us feel like we were putting her out just for being there. She was also very rude to other customers who had come in and questioned her regarding the wait times on their hot drinks. £7.50 for cream tea that was poor shop bought scones and tea pots that can only be described as having a dipping sauce pot in the top of the tea pot to keep the boiling water in! She did remark that she was there on her own but honestly her whole attitude and mannerisms and mediocre food was just a very poor show. Will definitely not be returning.

Stopped here to make a change from the usual, whilst travelling alone. Friendly, happy, lady who served me and checked in on me. Food was nice (fried egg was a bit rushed and bubbled up but was still runny, so a win anyway). Peaceful, quick service, nice view. Spotlessly clean (including the loos) so will definitely return. Keep up the good work!

We thought a nice stop off on way to Cornwall rather than keep stopping at Starbucks. Lady who took our order and served us seemed okay but not overly friendly. I noticed she was quite chatty with an elderly couple sat not far from us. I just felt she wasn’t very friendly to us but it didn’t really bother me much, my husband didn’t notice at all. The food was good and the coffee was hot so we were fine. I’m shocked to read so many reviews of bad experiences here. Had I read those first we wouldn’t have stopped there! I guess we were lucky ish that day!

Great Bakewell tart and a pricey but good home made crab sandwich. Drive past the turn in which is on a corner but did a upturn to find the crab sandwiches advertised. Lovely place with good parking and massive seating area inside and out. Perfect place to take the kids as there appear to be farm walks to do from the cafe.

We were staying at a self catering cottage in Upottery. On our first day out, we needed to go into Honiton, and not knowing the location of an eatery for breakfast, stopped at the Oaklands Farm Shop & Cafe. As per previous comments, we did find the lady behind the counter a little “short on words”, but certainly not rude as some have suggested. We ordered a small cooked breakfast which included fried egg, sausage, bacon, hash brown, beans and toast. All these items clearly noted on the menu…….. A cup of tea was also ordered. Although we were some of the first to visit on the day, the breakfasts duly arrived - cooked to perfection. During the course of the meal, the lady asked if everything was ok………which it was. It was also a pleasure to enjoy a properly cooked egg……… We will definitely be returning. Thank you………..

Stopped for breakfast en route to St Ives and received a frosty response from the owner, despite trying our best to be friendly. Breakfast was well cooked, but coffee machine was still ‘warming up’ (at 10.15am!) and tea was served in small white utilitarian cups. Really disappointed by everything as we have supported this establishment for years yet felt there was no attempt to engage with us in any way.

Once again tried Oaklands cafe on our way to Cornwall. Plenty of easy parking with clean spacious cafe, at a convenient place on our journey. However, just when we thought the awful waitress/owner/? couldn’t get much ruder and disobliging, she excelled herself. No acknowledgment I that I was standing at the counter waiting, but after five minutes with her back to me she informed me there was a long wait for food. ( no other customers around ) When I enquired how long is long, she replied 15 mins. I cheerfully said, oh that’s ok and thought she would take my order. But no ! With her back still to me, she said, ‘ I said 15 minutes’ I realised she obviously thought I needed to go away and come back later! She had not even turned around to look at me when speaking . I felt as if I was doing something wrong trying to order at her cafe. I can’t believe that this women would want to continue with her business with such an unpleasant and hostile demeanour. She obviously hates her job and has excelled herself with so many hostile reviews on trip advisor. John Cleese could do a fantastic sketch on this cafe, it’s got to be experienced to be believed. I never write bad reviews but this woman has inspired me with her rudeness. We went to Parr’s Farm cafe instead and it was excellent. The service top notch and the food to match. There is no hope for Oakland’s except a change of management

This is an updated review to my previous one. Yes, we did stop coming here for a few years due to the stroppy service, but the food has always been good and the cleanliness of the place is also faultless. The bacon lettuce and tomato sandwiches are our choice with excellent bacon used and they’re served really nicely with some attractive garnish and a few crisps. We came twice during our annual June visit to Cornwall and the service was much more friendly. There’s a nice outdoor sitting area backing onto some meadows with some lovely views and you can walk your dog on the lead for a wee stop. I think the current rating is a little low so I’d say give it a go. You’d be hard pushed to find anywhere better to have a bite to eat and cup of tea/coffee and some cake.

Over the past 10-12 years we have been going to Cornwall for a holiday once, sometimes twice, a year and going down and coming back we have always stopped at the Oaklands Farm Shop and Cafe for refreshments. We love it there and find the lady who runs it most pleasant and the food she produces, whatever it is, which has been quite variable over the years, has been lovely, freshly cooked, hot and very enjoyable.

We have just had the pleasure of stopping here, and whilst there was a (reasonable) short delay in things arriving, they were very much worth the wait. My daughter is dairy intolerant which was beautifully accommodated with an oat babycchino beautifully presented, and a red pepper and tomato soup (even had a choice of soups) with brown bread roll. My daughter described this as the best soup ever, which might be a tad of a tall order but certainly demonstrated how much she enjoyed. The adults respectively thoroughly enjoyed an eggs royale (perfectly poached), a pea and ham soup (lovely) and a full cooked breakfast (declared extremely nice). Thank you for your lovely care and thank you Marcelle. Made us a beautiful enjoyed meal and a lovely break in our journey. We will hope to be able to return.

Explained we had and she walked off. Went back out to the car and changed my one year old in the car as we felt so unwelcomed, unfortunatly no bins and I didn't want to leave it on the road, went back in and asked to use a bin, again the lady who served us screaches you have to be a customer and buy something, all whilst screwing her face at me. Unbelievably rude waitress! I cannot understand why a person who seems to detest customers works in hospitality. Presumably she owns the place, because surely no-one would employ her with that nasty, rude attitude. The food was extremely basic - the bare minimum but at maximum prices. I had a crab sandwich (I was drawn in by the sign on the side of the road, but I wish we'd checked out the reviews before we ordered!). It was the most basic sandwich with a smear of brown crab meat (no white meat, despite what the menu claimed). £10!!! And I came away still hungry. Please avoid giving this place your custom. There are other places nearby that are so much more worthy, with better service, better food and better prices. This place was terrible on all counts.

I travel frequently between London and Devon and always use this cafe for my halfway stop. Over several years I have watched with pleasure as it has grown from very small in one room to the addition of a large and light extension and more recently a pleasant outdoor terrace. The food and coffee are interesting, well-cooked to order and just what one needs on a journey. The lady in charge is pleasant and helpful, but running the place almost single-handed. When it's quiet, which is not often, she is very ready to chat. Absolutely nothing to complain about...how much better to stop there than some ghastly service station or multiple roadside cafe.

Whilst waiting to be served I read the history of the of the business so then asked the lady behind the counter if she was the author who started the business and was answered with a curt 'Yes" with no eye contact. However, if you want good food that’s infinitely better than any of the other options on the A303 or surrounding motorway service stations, you should maybe try and ignore the generally unfriendly service here and give it a go. We returned today after years avoiding it and had full English breakfasts. They are of excellent quality with superb sausages (2), bacon (2) and fried eggs (2) plus mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans and toast. Fact is she is always extremely busy and may not always have time or inclination for meaniless banter. We've just stopped and had breakfast here. The food was good, if not a bit expensive(£29.50 for 3 cooked breakfasts and two teas), and it was great to have outside space for the kids to run around. However, the lady who served us was unfriendly and brusque and we felt like she didn't want us there. We're not going back unfortunately, would much rather visit an independent than a petrol station...

We have stopped off three times now as convenient with dog as great area to sit outside. However, the same lady has served us each time and she is so unfriendly, grumpy and rude. She disappears round back when you arrive, when serving is unfriendly and throws down food, and don’t dare be slow to close door as she sarcastically comments and slams behind you. It is such a shame as food quite good but she clearly dislikes customers!

Very good food. Tea served in cups-Hooray! An old fashioned café with lovely food. We always head for here when we are traveling-it really is very good. Love the fact they raise money for the Devon Lifeboats too.

Having stopped here on our way home before, we decided to stop today for some lunch. I’m not entirely sure what they have done with the prices but there seems to have been a huge hike. First of all, 2 cups of tea and 2 soft drinks were £8.50. Ok, not ridiculous, but high for a glorified shed in a farm yard. Next we sat down to take a look at the menu. Now I’ve eaten in all sorts of establishments but I’ve never spent £11 on an omelette. £11 for 3 eggs cooked in the quickest way possible. Not only was the omelette overpriced but a jacket potato was £9! Honestly, £9! That’s not £5, or even £7, £9 for a potato. I mean, how much does a potato cost? As far as I’m aware there’s no great discrepancy in potato prices at a local level. A spud’s a spud. Now, if you fancy something special, why not go for the fish and chips? Oh, oh, I’ll tell you why. £13, that’s why. The table next to us had fish and chips and you’ve never seen a more insipid plate of fried food!

Only on reading the reviews did I decide to write one myself. Its a lovely cafe in the countryside but the woman behind the counter was so rude and short tempered. Couldn't get a smile out of her. I thought she might be having a bad day but looking at the reviews it seems not. It was very quiet inside but it still took ages to get our food.

I hate to write a bad review but feel I have to on this one! Having visited Oakland’s last week I cannot believe that they are still in business. On arrival we were kept waiting at the counter without any kind of acknowledgement, when the lady behind the counter finally decided to serve us she was rude and arrogant. We ordered 2 Americano coffees which when they came resembled dish water (if you want a decent coffee Starbucks is 1 mile up the road), I had to ask for the previous people’s dirty dishes to be taken away after our coffee had been delivered. We also ordered 2 egg sandwiches which were seriously lacking the egg filling. I personally thought the menu was quite expensive. It’s such a shame as this place could be a gold mine with the right owners. On the plus side there is a field out the back to walk the dog around.

Excellent. I am delighted to write a review of this Café, for food, products and service. I sent a card with a query after my visit regarding something I had purchased, and received a courteous phone call the next day with sound advice and a good outcome. I have called at the café several times and have personally always found it a very pleasant experience, and am glad to recommend it

Had I seen the reviews prior to our visit we would have given a wide berth. However the Crab Soup was as good as any that I have had in many high end establishments. The menu board is good and decent. A great location but unfortunately customer service is sadly lacking. What a great shame, as a smile could make all the difference to your visit

If no stars were available then Oaklands would have scored that, they are lucky to get the one, this has to be one of the worst places I have ever visited for food, the food itself was of poor quality, I'll come to that in a bit, the main issue here is the staff, in particularly the lady serving behind the counter, the 'face' of Oaklands and after reading other reviews I assume the owner, her attitude is just horrible, rude, obnoxious and unwilling to find any common ground or build any form of a relationship with her customers, now I was simply after some early lunch not a new best friend but the way she operates is simply not good enough in any walk of life let alone in the catering industry where customer service and good food is so important.

Very expensive for a very mediocre breakfast - London prices without the quality to back up he charges. Staff were abrupt to the point of rudeness. Would never go back. Should have gone to the Starbucks 100 yarda down the road.

We stopped here on the spur of the moment whilst heading for Cornwall. We found the service in the cafe unfriendly, expensive, small and poor quality coffee and the owner very rudely told my wife to tell me to take my dog off his garden which I thought was a field. (there was no indication that it was a garden?)

While on a family holiday to the region we thought we'd visit this local "farm shop" and stop for some refreshments.

I concur with many of the previous negative reviews. Old fashioned decor and old fashioned attitude. Rude, curt and unhelpful service. Poor quality food for the money. The only up to date thing were the prices and then some. The place was littered with hectoring signs warning about various transgressions. I would have said the toilets were pleasant except for the notice warning that the police would be called if they didn't like you. I suspect they either don't read their reviews or they don't care. Avoid!

A word of warning, please don’t run the risk and ignominy of stopping here. We stopped en route to our holiday destination near Sidmouth. It was purely a chance stop as the kids were tired and needed a refreshment break. Ordered a couple of hot drinks and juices. The owner was beyond rude. It seemed like a huge effort for her to undertake anything and we were kept waiting for ages with no apology. I’ve subsequently read comments on Trip Advisor and wholeheartedly agree. Why go into a service industry, when you clearly despise your customers. It’s a shame, as it has the potential to be something special. The real kick is that there’s a Starbucks less than half a mile down the road. I’d much rather give my cash to a small independent rather than a faceless corporate, but my advise here is carry on past Oakland’s, & stop at Starbucks. It’s probably much friendlier, cheaper and they serve better coffee

Why run a cafe if you hate people. Rude and abrasive. I had the temerity to ask if I should wait for the drinks. I was told I will bring them when they are ready. Then they were slapped down on the table. I won't make the mistake of coming back.

Well placed on the A303, but the owner is miserable to her staff and indifferent to her customers. If you do stop just have a drink as you will be kept waiting for your food- without apology!

Fish was good but the chips were disgusting they were hard and look like they have been sitting around in dirty oil. Will look at going elsewhere

We have been going to kings fry for years and the food is great but the fans in there are disgusting and dirty and there is an atmosphere in there is strange. The young fryer is not very happy they seem to be having family arguments all the time. The cloths they are wearing are dirty and should be changed everyday. If the food hygiene people saw this they would get closed down. Never going there again.

I believe this pub was recently sold off by Heavitree after many years of neglect. I'm not sure they do food yet but I was very impressed by the lady behind the bar (Kelly?). She knows her job and has a very good rapport with the customers. We'll be going again.

A very warm welcome from Roger. I recommend a visit to a beautiful village and pub.
