A colleague from overseas and his wife were staying here on a few-days visit to UK. My wife and I joined them for dinner - and wow, we were so glad we did. The welcome from the staff, from the moment we walked in and throughout the evening was nothing short of wonderful. Friendly, professional and fun where appropriate. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent -- I would particularly recommend the Pigeon which I had as a starter - would have had it as main course if it had been an option. I suspect that if I'd asked, they would have accommodated that too - but there was plenty to choose from. All 4 of us enjoyed a great meal in a lovely space with a great view of the floodlit church in the grounds. Not cheap, but worth every penny - cannot recommend it highly enough and my wife and I are already planning to return soon.

Beautiful views outside from our window seat in the restaurant. Lovely staff, professional and friendly, special thanks to Tracy, May and Pablo for excellent attention to detail. The meal was delicious. We all had the beef Sunday roast main. The presentation was great and everything was cooked to perfection. The beef was juicy, vegetables had just the right amount of crunch, but the cauliflower cheese was my absolute favourite, I need the recipe! Thank you. I’m looking forward to staying in a couple of months.

Firstly, the dining room itself is one of the greatest features in this magnificent period house. Tables are well spaced apart, beautifully dressed and take advantage of the county views. Chefs serve delicious fare at breakfast and dinner. Our favourite dish over the 4 night stay was the chateaubriand, si good we had it twice. A good choice of wines from around the world and the bar is very well stocked with spirits. Friendly, well trained staff make dining an excellent and memorable experience.

Dining experience bad from start to finish. Too much to mention that was absolutely lacking. Absolutely not worth £200 for 3 course a and a bottle of wine. Handpicked has once again dropped the ball. Never again will we visit any Handpicked hotels. Lesson learned for good.

Very good food, beautifully presented, friendly staff in immaculate uniforms, Oak Room Restaurant and Drawing Room full of character. Very expensive drinks, and the hotel is not easy to find in the dark! More signs needed from main road, existing signs need to be larger. Otherwise would have got an "excellent" rating.

Average seems too mean as food was pretty good but very good is a bit too much praise so 3.5 from us. Trout and pate to start, trout and trimmings lacking in much flavour. Pate was lovely but one tiny bit of crisp bread is pretty stingy for £9! Lamb and pie for mains. Pie was lovely but slightly overcooked, chips were good. Lamb nice and tender but doesn't come with any potato accompaniment which we didn't notice and wish staff had suggested something to go with it as left hungry. Draught lager was warm. Food nicely presented and staff are great but for the pretty steep prices we expected a bit more.

Terrific setting, dinning room oak panelled and very pleasent, staff were more than helpfull, food excellent. We were treated like royalty every step of the way, escorted from the lounge to the resturant, i ordered steak rare, which some places struggle with, but not here perfect, pudding very filling, well stocked wine cellar at reasonable prices. The whole experience was worth it, thank goodness we were staying, as we felt very full sleeping well that night.

We booked a sparkling afternoon tea for five of us on a Saturday afternoon. Initially we were the only people in the restaurant so it felt quite chilly but as the room filled up we warmed up. Prosecco was delivered quickly. Food was a bit slower. The sandwiches were fresh but the fillings were not particularly tasty - especially the beetroot one and the houmous with capers. The scones were absolutely perfect and quite a few of the mini cakes were nice but the mango and coconut compote didn’t go down too well. The range of teas and coffees was very good indeed and the staff were friendly and efficient. The surroundings were very pleasant indeed. Rethink the sandwich fillings and it would be 5*.

We had the Table d'Hote menu while staying at the hotel. Dining is a traditional formal process with pre-dinner drinks and orders taken in the grand drawing room which is impressive if a little lacking in atmosphere recognising that is a personal view. When we were called in to eat we were seated on a table immediately next to another couple even though most of the dining room was empty with plenty of tables for two. This seemed odd and gave a lack of privacy. The obligatory Amuse bouche (latest restaurant fad) was rather bland humous based and too large. The mushrooms and pate starters were very. We both had Dover sole which was a whole fish, large and it dominated the plate making it difficult to eat and nowhere to put the debris. It was also somewhat lacking in flavour. The deserts were good.

I stayed and ate at this hotel last year and the food was great. Not life changing but great. I have reviewed the hotel separately because it's world class and I'll deffo be back. I'll just make sure I eat at a local restaurant until they change chefs. I don't say this lightly because my partner is in the industry but there's either a lack of skill or a lack of love... the food is almost inedible... and for the prices, is shocking. I've eaten at Michelin restaurants for less. I did inform the staff how I felt and they brought me an alternative dish after the first one was inedible. The second wasn't a big improvement i'm afraid. They did handle everything amazingly but I just feel I must warn people that the food might not be anything like expected. I really don't want the under seasoned, flavourless, cooking to impact on one of my very favourite hotels. I hope changes are made fast. I hate being critical because in my world, every chef is an artist but in this case, it's not just about a restaurant, it's about the deserving success of historical hotel and wonderful team. Please don't allow this to continue

The destination is the thing: a great, occasionally Gothic country pile with history going back centuries, international staff, lovely country setting and excellent cuisine. Drinks are in the enormous drawing room - which is impressive, but needs better lighting, sound system and decor to be worthy of the meal to come. Canapés appeared, prompting us to order a few glasses of Champagne. The dining room is baronial - try to be seated with a view of the ancient chapel bell tower, which is lit at night. An excellent 3-course menus is offered (the lamb was tender and delicious), as well as a la carte fare. Wines are well-priced and well-chosen. As in all the U.K., your servers will likely be from other countries, which makes for some interesting exchanges, but great friendliness. Worth it.

We were the typically annoying guests, who asked if we could eat earlier than the slot we'd booked. Despite the fact that there were three other events going on at the hotel that evening, they were happy to move us to an earlier slot with the warning that there might be a slight delay between courses. There wasn't! Everything arrived in a timely manner and was delicious. The courses are beautifully presented. The portions look rather small but I found I was full after my three courses and every mouthful was a delight. There is plenty of choice and I really think that £39.50 for three courses of this quality is very good value indeed.

The restaurant at Ettington Park is shabby and not as sophisticated and elegant as the professional photographs depict. We have been lucky to have dined in some of the finest restaurants in the world and have an understanding of what fine dining means. We chose the taster menu what a disappointment! At £75.00 per head a taster menu should offer a variety of tastes and foods that tantalise the taste buds sadly this was not our experience. We started with Grouse soup, which was luke warm, unseasoned and bland and had an after taste of vinegar. The next dish was a stilton parfait, which resembled a cheap cheese cake in looks and taste; my husband and I left the majority of this dish. The third course was monkfish and clams which tasted exceptionally vinegary yet again, the clams were closed and the monkfish tough. At this point we could no longer continue the meal and decided to leave the restaurant. I asked to speak to a member of the management team. The Operation Manager Mike Blake came to speak to me, at this point our experience of Ettington improved immensely. Having explained our disappointed he immediately went to speak to the Chef who unfortunately was not as professional as Mike and did not speak to us personally to apologise on behalf of his kitchen. This may explain why there is such a lack of care in the food served if he is not troubled by the fact that his diners have found their meal inedible. Mike did everything he could to make amends for the disastrous evening and I must compliment him but sadly we could not and would not recommend this restaurant. I cannot remember any other time that we have had to get up and leave a meal due to such poor quality cooking!

This is a glorious Victorian Gothic building and has great ambience. We visited with a Gourmet Society discount which helped soothe the bad bits.Drinks service could only be described as pathetic and although the barman was off that night a more capable stand-in should have been found. You cannot serve a Mojito without mint in it when this was pointed out to the waitress she returned with a sprig of mint on a plate!!The restaurant service was better, but slow and the cooking was good (portions a bit on the small side though). This venue used to be better than this and should strive to overcome staffing issues whilst building on it's strengths. We will go back but not for 6 months or so.

About what you would expect given the hotel (see separate review). Atmospheric restaurant rooms spoiled by truck-stop muzak piped in at both dinner and breakfast. Lighting is poor and in the converted chapel it is execrable - if seated there, insist on being moved to the main dining room. It would help if the various blown light bulbs had been replaced. Pre-prandial drinks served in the beautiful and very grand salon. A pity the selection of drinks is so poor (and see below re cocktails). Insist on seeing the main wine list and buy a bottle. Food quite variable but not without some highlights. Starters poor; main courses good to excellent; desserts variable though do not seem to change day to day. Service slow and occasionally comically inept ("a dry Martini... Certainly sir.... With tonic water or ginger beer?"). Good and reasonably priced selection of Bordeaux, especially 2000 vintage (as of time of writing, April 2016). Markup on Champagne is 50%, which makes a nice change. If you are staying here for two nights, you'll probably be quite happy dining in on both. Not three.

The Eton Mess for desert was not served in quite the traditional fashion that I'd have expected and serving it on a slate didn't really do it justice. That perhaps is being picky though as we had a truly wonderful family day out. This was my first visit to this Hotel. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms traditionally decorated. This has to be one of the best dining experiences I have had. Although the hotel and restaurant were very busy (Cheltenham Races!) we were welcomed by the concierge and maitre d and made to feel very special indeed. A wonderful historical building - reputed to be haunted, but we didn't see anything! We were guided through the menu and wine list by the matre d'hotel with humour and grace. The food itself was fantastic - the duck terrine was out of this world, although I really dont get the fashion for cuckoo spit (foam) on one's plate (showing my country roots here - its commonly found on leaves in the spring), but it didn't detract from the dish. The fillet was perfectly cooked, as were the vegetables. My only little niggle was the cheeseboard, which I felt could have been a little more adventurous. Some nice Brebiou or Delice de Bourgogne rather than Brie would have been nice! Just a small niggle though. Well worth saving up for!

Very good choices on the menu and wine list. We ate on two evenings - the first our starters were duck egg with hollandaise sauce and terrine, followed by two blade of beef with garlic mash and runner beans, followed by two raspberry and almond sponge. Washed down by Little Eden wine. The second evening we had pork belly starters and again went for the beef blade as it was so delicious - we also managed a portion of their handcut chips and then a chocolate sweet. The wine was Borgo Saletta 2007 which comes from the Tuscan vineyards of the hotel's owner.

The tasting menu is worth the extra, and accompany it with the wine selection. Only problem is you are hard pushed to make it to the cheese. Chef has obviously perfected his signature dishes although the pork belly needs to absorb slightly less oil before serving. The combination of the pea/pear and garlic soup makes the menu for me. The melt in your mouth beef is a signature dish in its own league. Thanks chef

We were seated in a dark corner near the door we thought this was because it was busy but after we finished our meal there were only about 4 couples dining. We ordered a bottle of wine which was really expensive for the quality. It arrived before our starter but still had not been opened after we finished or sarter I had to ask for it to be opened and the waitress said she could not find a corkscrew! The roll we were offered was cold although the waitress had told us it was warm, the seafood cocktail was a very small two mouthful prawn cocktail nothing special, the main course was fish a tiny piece of bream, on top of half a carrot cut into batons and five green beans, with three small new potatoes cut in half and placed around the edge of the plate with a small amount of sauce drizzled over them. This was very disappointing as it was nothing special I could have made both of these courses at home. It was definately not fine dining. The dessert was better although my husband ordered lemon tart and when it arrived it was brown. I told the waitress that the order was wrong and we had ordered lemon tart and she was quite sharp and told me 'it is citrus'. I was not it was chocolate but we had had enough by this point so just ate it. I would not go back as if we had not had a voucher this would have cost us over £100

A group of us went here for Sunday lunch, and you really can't fault the location. The building itself is stunning, and the grounds make for a very rewarding walk after dinner. We were made very welcome when we arrived, and were shown into the lovely Drawing Room for pre-lunch drinks (good selection, but very pricey). We were then shown into the Oak Room for lunch. The service here was a little inconsistent, as we were waited on by three different members of staff - ranging from nervous, to overly-friendly. In terms of ordering and delivering food though, there were no issues. The food itself was good without being spectacular, although the portion-size - even for a fine-dining restaurant was a little disappointing. My desert in particular was tiny - two mouthfuls! I have to say, that I was still hungry after three courses - which is very unlike me when I dine out. Having said that, a three-course Sunday lunch for £24.95 in such wonderful surroundings was just about worth the money.

I booked afternoon tea for myself and 4 others as a girly treat, left feeling a bit disappointed. The building itself and the grounds are stunning, on arrival it felt like a very expensive hotel, on the inside though...not so much. There was a wedding at the venue on the day we visited so we were seated in the library instead of the main restaurant which was a shame as this room is small and quite dark. The tea itself was quite nice but for £18.95 I have had better. The interior is a bit shabby and rough round the edges. With a bit of TLC it would be really lovely, unfortunately the inside lets the outside down dramatically! Service during tea was good but when we wanted to pay our bill we were told that we would need to wait at reception, which we did. They were however busy checking people into rooms so unfortunately we waited for 20 minutes! I won't be rushing back!

Food was delicious, service is amazing, wine is a really nice selection of high quality wines. The only issue you may have is that it's all such high quality, the prices are more like central London Michelin star price rather than country retreat. However, it was good enough for me to feel perfectly happy picking up the tab.

Had not eaten in the Oak Room before - only been to the hotel previously to attend a wedding reception. It's a wonderful building and full of history but we left disappointed after our visit. The staff are friendly but something is lacking as far as the overall service and presentation are concerned. The menu at £24.95 offered a good choice and the starter was adequate. Then the main course arrived - plated and looking like a canteen meal! We had chosen the chicken and surprised to find that a small jug of bread sauce had been included on the same plate and was sitting in the gravy! If it is one big issue I have with restaurants it is having all the vegetables and potatoes included on the plate especially when green beans are included which I particularly dislike. Fair enough if fine dining then the artistry of these additions usually enhances the plate but in this case there was no skill. We chose the crumble for dessert which was served with vanilla ice cream. The plates arrived - a ramekin dish containing the crumble with a scoop of ice cream on the top but this was sitting on a large plate with a folded full sized white napkin underneath. A very strange presentation because to get one's spoon into the dish you needed to remove the ice cream so had to remove the napkins! Not on our list for a re visit in the future.

Fabulous building and surroundings. Definitely recommend a walk around the grounds and concierge gave us a run down on the history of the house. We ate in the main restaurant - there is also a bar menu. Food was expensive and slightly eccentric! I wasn't convinced that brie, bacon, coleslaw, roesti and scallops went together but food well presented, excellent friendly service and worth a visit for a look around!

Have dined at Ettington Park on a number of occasions but usually dinner. Went for lunch today as they serve a limited menu in the lounge. As usual the food was very good, albeit it's not quick but it's clearly freshly cooked. My problem was the lack of attention given by serving staff. We sat down at a table and overused the menu and then waited and waited. Every so often a young waiter would come in and do stuff with napkins and table settings and the leave the lounge before you could attract his attention. Eventually I got up and followed him out of the room and placed an order in the anti room. He was very polite but it was over 50 mins before we saw any food.

We stayed here and went to the restaurant to find it set for breakfast. On check out we discovered it had been closed for a year which caused issues as I’m type 1 diabetic! Shame also as the reviews were fantastic

Excellent in every way we were a group of friends all with dogs it’s a very dog friendly hotel. Mazine was the duty manager that weekend he was brilliant always there and happy to go that extra mile for the group. Fabulous food, clean spacious rooms and the staff are very friendly. I would highly recommend the hotel it’s in a great position friendly great food. I can’t understand why anyone could write a bad review if you want 5 star go to the Hilton or the Savoy
