Number One Chinese Restaurant in Chichester

We’ve just enjoyed a really tasty takeaway from Number One Chinese Restaurant. Like other have said, the Sesame Prawn Toast is delicious - generous prawn layer, crispy and chewy all at once and not remotely greasy. Lemon Chicken is my usual order from a Chinese, and this was amongst the best I’ve had. Everything else we ordered was yummy, and the portions are generous. Most impressively, when I ordered at 5.40pm and they said it would be around 40 mins for delivery, I said that was fine but that we had a hungry toddler so any earlier would be appreciated. They were at our door 20 mins later. Brilliant customer service, thank you!

THE BEST Chinese takeaway, not just locally but that I’ve ever had. You have to try the Crackling Pork and the Prawn Toast, I promise you won’t have had Prawn Toast like it before 🤩 😋 Heidi is always so friendly too, if you’re local or visiting the Witterings, do not miss out!

We have just had the best takeaway that anyone could possibly want or need. Beautifully cooked, a good variety of dishes and you really feel that you couldn’t eat another thing, we couldn’t rate this restaurant highly enough, absolutely brilliant

Lucky enough to stay around the corner from this cracking restaurant or now take away. Moved out of London a few years ago, and we were worried about the quality, authenticity of eg Chinese food . Thankfully Number one is fantastic. The won ton soup, Singapore noodles, prawn and crab rolls being my favourite. If in the area give it a try

We ordered a few dishes which were of a good portion size. Singapore noodles was not quite what we were expecting but they tasted alright. Had free prawn crackers as delivery was over £20. Delivery driver friendly and courteous, met him at the reception area for handover.

Moved into the area 18 months ago and the food was great. 18 months on and after taking our delivery tonight we will not be using this restaurant again as it gets worse and worse with each delivery. The food this time was genuinely hardly edible, most of it was cold and for the 3rd time in a row part of the order was missing and upon calling we received no apology and were told we’d need to wait 30mins. Worst of was that after waiting all that time for the missing item they were so over cooked I threw them in the bin! If you want good Chinese food stay clear for now

I ordered for home delivery, polite phone manners and the lady who delivered was very friendly, food was hot and portions were large, sesame on prawns toast were brilliant best I had, all the main were really good, well done to the owners

Staying at a local campsite for a couple of days. Ordered delivered (for free) take away. Best Chinese we’ve ever had, better than some of the most expensive restaurants. Well done Heidi, will definitely be back

We’ve just moved into the area and chose No 1 from local feedback. We had an excellent takeaway, which we collected at the time given us, and enjoyed it immensely. Special mention for the prawn toast - the best ever!!

Called the restaurant from East Wittering Beach, where the restaurant was only a mile from, the food was ready within 15 minutes and we paid contactlessly. Food tasted great!

Food was very tasty and hot on arrival, delivery was very quick. Highly recommend. I’d definitely order again :).

Poor quality food, chicken balls over cocked again, chow main plain, simple food over priced, getting more expensive every year without improvement in quality, sorry but experience shouldn’t be ignored.

This was our fourth visit this year and just as good as previously.This time we took the in laws who are in their late 70's and usually hard to please.We recommend a few dishes ie the crispy pork belly and huge prawn toast.The father in law ordered a great sea food dish amongst others.This restaurant is a family run business and it really shows with the great food and service.As we live in Selsey it is a distance from us but we'll worth the time and sometimes price due to cabs.Can't wait to visit again.Thank you No 1.

We ordered 5 dishes for take away and they were all good except Hot and Sour soup. The soup was way too sweet. Otherwise they use fresh ingredients and nice seasoning and it looked very appetising and it was really good. We enjoyed it. Thanks Chef!

We booked a table based on a recommendation, but were very disappointed. The foods ordered were all bland or greasy and we felt it had all simply come out of a mass produced freezer. When we asked our server to take back some spring rolls which were still frozen in the middle, the plate was almost snatched off the table and from then on, all our food was slammed down in front of us. We left alot of the food as we did not like it and asked for the bill - And definitely will not return. The Bracklesham Diner a few doors away is better, friendlier and altogether a nicer experience.

Ordered a group takeaway from "number one" Chinese the other week and the order was fairly large costing us over £100. After a long day at the beach we could not wait to dig in. When we received our food I was surprised with how the dishes were even sent to us so willingly. The chicken chow mein just wasn't chicken chow mein- unless you want a boiled vegetable soup with no noodles then go ahead and order this dish. Chicken skewers were pink and rubbery and half the dishes were half cold and unrecognisable. I wouldn't usually write a review like this but we phoned up and asked if there was a way for any sort of refund/ re delivery for some dishes and instead we were sworn and screamed at and told to come to the kitchen ourselves for a cooking lesson. From someone who works in customer service themselves, I was shocked at how extremely rude the girl on the phone was. The problems could have been easily recovered but the horrific customer service wouldn't even give this 'number one' chinese one star. Previously have visited Ocean Village in East Wittering and that is where you'll get a quality Chinese takeaway.

Yet another fantastic meal from the team. We went seafood based and we couldn't get over the size of the prawns. Biggest thing I'd ever seen! They were rammed with orders, which just shows the quality of the food. I think my only negative comment is that I know don't enjoy any other Chinese food now. I'll it eat, but it doesn't come close. You really are number 1.

Normally the food here is excellent but it failed to reach its previously high standards yesterday. The sauce in both the Kung Po chicken and sizzling beef was watery and lacked flavour. The young chow fried rice was not very exciting and the rice was a bit undercooked, a powdery gritty experience.

Lovely restaurant and great food. Best in the area. Sit in or takeaway fresh food cooked to perfection. Carl

Delicious food, made a special effort to accommodate my vegetarian daughter and coeliac wife. Very clean and welcoming, clearly a local favourite - will surely return!

Currently on holiday for New Year and as it’s our daughters 13th birthday decided to book the local chinese restaurant as chinese is her favourite. Not disappointed at all! Would highly recommend! Heidi and her team couldn’t have done more for us and the food was fabulous! Very small restaurant so would recommend booking as they could fill up easily. If we are ever back down this way we would definitely come back, as all 8 of us lived our meals! Thank you!

Visited on 15 th for a birthday celebration. The food and the ambience was fantastic. Was made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived.Very relaxed atmosphere, outstanding service and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this amazing restaurant. Will be back soon that is for sure..

I have been using this family run business for many years, the current owner was only young when I first started eating here. Every year I have my birthday supper here as there's nothing that matches No.1. Friendly welcoming staff, food second to none. Only slight comment becasue they are so busy take away 's have missed some dish, not a problem as they happily return the missing item. Love the food, nothing matches it for miles!

Food amazing , staff extremely friendly would definately recommend a visit .Pork belly crispy is fabulous.

We had a delivery which turns up extremely quickly with excellent attention to detail with the food. Although it might not be the cheapest, I would certainly pay the extra and visit here again. Not greasy or tasteless like other Chinese takeaways in the area. A wonderful Chinese we will certainly use again.

Best takeaway in the Chichester area. Will always opt for this when visiting family in Witterings, Great quality food, so tasty.

Had my first take-away from here when had friends visiting. I felt very let down as its not cheap but the food was bland and tasteless! Will not be trying it again!

I have to echo the previous reviewer. We visit regularly for a takeaway. Being notoriously picky, and locals, nowhere else comes close to Number One.

We moved down here from Surrey four years ago and had always raved about our local Chinese there. Didn’t think we would find anywhere near as good let alone better ! How wrong were we !!! This restaurant is by far the best Chinese food we have ever had ! Can’t fault at all ! Lovely friendly and very welcoming staff. Wouldn’t go anywhere else.

The worst chinese take away in my life, very small portions, half like in diffrent restaurant, tasteless, soup was in coffe cups - we just drive to the beach and looks like on photos. Egg fried Rice has No Egg. The Rice noodles was too dry to eat, and No taste, spring rolls was horrible, just prawn crakers was ok.

Don't be put off by the appearance of this restaurant, which from the outside looks like a wooden shed.

Firstly I walked in and the staff were arguing which immediately put me off but I gave them the benefit of the doubt and stayed for food. We were sat down and the appearance of the restaurant is good for what it is. The food came out fast which is a concern considering everything is supposed to be freshly made which means this restaurant is basically selling highly priced freezer food. My chips were soggy and icy in the middle, very disappointing. There was also a hair in my chow mien. Was not impressed.

Much to my husband's dismay, I generally avoid Chinese food like the plague. With coeliac disease and a peanut allergy it's a bit of a minefield for me. However, on this occasion my husband was desperate so we gave Number One a go and we're both really pleased we did.

We ordered a takeaway last night. It was ready in 20 minutes and absolutely the nicest Chinese we have eaten in a long time. We will most definitely be getting food again next time we’re here. It also had a little restaurant with seating for about 5/6 tables.

We ordered a takeaway from number one tonight, the meal was ready on time, reasonably priced and best of all freshly cooked - the aromatic duck was succulent and plenty of it, the other dishes were perfectly cooked and the beansprouts peppers were nice and crispy.

Family dinner based on reviews and comments. However, the 'I don't really know or care' service wasn't great but I reserved judgement for food which was average at best ,being kind. I've been in HK many times and this was a poor imitation. Bad , not fresh rice and lackluster flavours from a 'cook'. Really I can't see how the people of BB can supposedly love this place. Each to their own however.

It is always a pleasure to visit this restaurant, Heidi & her staff are so accommodating nothing is too much trouble.With a very varied menu we visit frequently especially during the summer months when in the area,we have also introduced many friends & family who have also enjoyed the excellent cuisine.

We visited this lovely, small family run restaurant on Saturday evening. Chinese food is a family favourite especially with our daughters and it rounded off a lovely stay in the area.

My favourite Chinese takeaway place! The staff are so friendly and always make the adjustments I order even if I'm being extra fussy. Such a beautiful little restaurant area and their food is so unique. I can't find another Chinese like it. I love the salt and chilli chicken!!!! Highly recommend

Great restaurant with very friendly and courteous staff. We often have take away and also eat in, both are just great. The food is always piping hot, very tasty and very well priced. If your looking to try it then do not hesitate.

I have eaten from Number one for as long as I can remember (20 years perhaps)!Staff are always friendly, the food is always great and great value for money.We are take aware people so can't comment on eating in. We always phone ahead and our order is always ready when we arrive.We never go anywhere else :-)

I am so lucky to have this little gem just round the corner from where I live.Have had a few takeaWays from here and the food is always hot and tasty. The service is efficient and friendly and I always recommend this restaurant to people staying in the area.This is always my number one choice!

My family and I have always had great takeaways and eat-in meals from Number 1, it's why we keep coming back despite the competition in the area. The staff are always friendly and the food is always fresh. I especially recommend the prawn toast and tempura beans for starters. It's not the cheapest place to eat, but I think you get what you pay for. We'll be back soon!

Egg fried rice was lacking egg it also had spring onion in which tasted old and ruined the fact that I wanted a basic egg fried rice ! Meal was a total waste of time and money needless to say I went hungry and the food went in the bin

Eat in, take away or get it delivered - ALL are great! This is the freshest, cleanest Chinese food I have ever eaten. It never disappoints. I highly recommend the tempura vegetables and the orange chicken. I won't go on about everything I like - try it for yourself!

Enjoyed another great meal here eating in here last weekend. It has always got people nipping in and out for takeaways too which is another good sign. My husband and I and our two young children thoroughly enjoyed our experience here, and no doubt we'll be back again.

This is the only place I can think of (I of course may be wrong) where the Hong Kong style sweet and sour chicken is battered chicken and a separate sauce. I thought I had got chicken balls but with a single slice of pepper and a single chunk of pineapple..2. The order was missing fried rice and when I went back to get it I was made to feel like I was trying to get a freebie surreptitiously.It's fine. No better no worse. Not the best birthday treat!

Not just visited as a couple, as a family and in a large group and been highly impressed every time. The customer service is continuously at a high standard and the staff are all wonderful. I visited here on a whim after a long day out. It's a small restaurant and seemed very popular for take out.Staff are very friendly. Quick and efficient service.Nice food, good portion sizes and good prices.Only complaint was that the food came to the table ad hoc, meaning that one main dish was delivered long before the other main dishes. This way not all the food was as hot as required.Recommended for a casual meal. Not a large enough restaurant to accommodate families.

I have yet to give a bad or negative review. The food is always excellent, as is the service. Can't recommend Number One highly enough for eating in or a take out. The best Chinese around.

We chose the set menu which was ok. The dishes were hot and tasty but they could have been slightly larger.

We always get a takeaway from here when we are in the area other than being caught out recently as they close on Mondays. The food is always outstanding and not like any other Chinese takeaway. The quality is second to none although this is reflected in the slightly higher prices than your average restaurant. There is a definite freshness about the food which takes it to the next level and not just another run of the mill Chinese. The restaurant itself is quite small so booking is essential if you want to eat in. Don't be put off by the basic shop frontage this really is a case of not judging a book by its cover!!!

Me and my boyfriend just ordered this take away and it was amazing!The only fault is that the portion are small, so ideal for just two of us but if there were more of us one dish would not be enough.It is a bit more expensive than other places but definitely worth it!Will definitely be going back here again.

We went here for the first time Saturday 4th June. Have had their takeaway, lovely, first time eating in the restaurant. They could only offer us the table outside, our fault, we left it late! It was a lovely evening so we thought why not? The menu is extensive and were spoiled for choice. The service was friendly, the food was great, so tasty and some different dishes. Highly recommend, we enjoyed sitting outside watching the world go by but when they emptied a little they did offer to move us inside. We declined as we were enjoying outside. Would go again in a heartbeat, only comment would be, the metal seats outside are a bit hard after a couple of hours, might be worth investing in some seat pads for evening diners. All in all a super experience.

I visited this restaurant this evening and was very disappointed with the food. It was bland freezer food which is available at Asian warehouse cash and carry outlets, smothered in over sweetened gloop and sprinkled with sesame seeds. The waitress was nice enough and the wine was decent ( had it been chilled). A poor attempt to purvey pricey Chinese cuisine, but I suppose they do have a captive audience . Uncle Ben, eat your heart out. Seriously pricey for what the produce Won't be returning. Sorry !

Decided to go for a Chinese meal while we were camping in the wittering and really glad we did. Had a very nice meal and a couple of drinks. Small restaurant, only about 8 tables I think, really good service and not too expensive either. Well worth a visit

Love going to number one,the food is beautiful,I have been to mr chows in Knightsbridge,and I truly belive that number one foods is as good as that in mr chows,try the sisiling beef,prawn toast Singapore noodles

I have been going to this restaurant most of my life and so know the place really well. I was really pleased when it was refurbished and re-opened as a sit-down restaurant once again (as I think a lot of people were!). As the title of my review states, it really sets the bar for Chinese restaurants, and its one of the reasons why Number One has been around for so many years! I especially recommend their prawn toast, as they are the most generous portions I have found anywhere! Sometimes in season they also serve a whole crab or lobster hacked up and wok friend with a load of salt and chili - possibly the best thing ever. So always ask if there are any specials available. The food is delicious, with generous servings and the menu is extensive. I've seen a few reviews on here complaining that they ordered various things and it wasn't what they expected. I think one was about a 'chicken breast' which wasn't what they expected with their chips - well, I know for a fact that nowhere on the menu is a listing for 'chicken breast'. I can't think of any authentic Chinese restaurant which serves up a plain chicken breast... so, if you are unsure of what you are ordering, then simply ask, and check as there are no descriptions (so simply assuming that what you're ordering is going to be exactly what you think it is, is slightly short-sighted IMO). The staff know the dishes inside out so can explain exactly what it is, and if asked are usually really happy to accommodate what you might be after and cook something to order for you. But its Chinese food - so don't go and order something and expect an English looking dish.The restaurant itself is small but really cosy, and the family who run it have customers going back year after year for good reason. Highly recommended to holiday makers and locals! It is my favorite for a very good reason!

We visited here about 6 months ago and really enjoyed it.As we have a place in Selsey and liking a drink it is a £30 round trip so waited for another "excuse" to splash out.My brother and sister in -law were down for the weekend and so decided on visiting again.I must say at this stage my brother in-law is a very good cook and actually has been paid to do private dining.He ordered the Hot and sour soup to start with and claimed it was the best he had eaten but not for the feint hearted.We shared chicken sate,salt and chilli ribs and pancake rolls all very good.For me the best was still to come.For mains we had sizzling fillet steak Cantonese Style,Number One special noodles,Kung Paon Chicken,Roasted Crackling Pork and mushroom rice.All washed down with beers,bottle of wine and shorts.We all agreed it was amongst the best Chinese we had ever had.Will not wait to find an "excuse" in future and so hope to be back sooner rather than later.Well done Number One.Food and service Excellent

I really enjoyed everything I ate at the restaurant, the seafood was exceptionally good. The staff were friendly and helpful, so pleased I found this lovely restaurant.

I ordered a chicken noodle and got a noodle with prawns in no chicken,Also ordered a chicken breast and chips and got sliced chicken in batter.Called and complained only to be told that is what they do.Below average cash and carry food and will never use again.

To order the food and tell us it will be 5 minutes alarm bells start ringing in our ears, Yes it took 5 minutes on a averagely busy night we would say.Cannot really tell you a nice thing about the food! Dim sum utterly disgusting flavor and hard! Sweet and sour chicken balls pretty much raw! Satay chicken obviously using pre-cooked chicken! I would say not as good as stated or maybe we have just eaten in good Chinese previously!

Went here 23rd December ordered chicken curry 5.00 boiled rice 2.60 chips 2.50 very small portions. Not enough curry sauce. Chicken not enough, curry sauce bland and tasteless. Chips frozen. Boiled rice cold. Total meal freezing cold not at all enjoyable. Compared to other places never will return.

Several weeks ago I booked a table for 8 people for a family event. We had family coming from all over the south east. However when it came to the day we found a sign up in the window that said the restaurant had closed for 2 weeks and was not due to open again until the following Tuesday. I can understand that circumstances sometimes crop up which are unexpected and sudden but the least we can expect is to be contacted to be informed and allow us to make alternative arrangements. Appalling customer care.

We have been visiting this restaurant for many years.The food is excellent with best quality ingredients used. Good sized portions, and good value.We visited last Saturday, and the place was packed fortunately we booked in advance (advisable).The young owners have transformed the restaurant and we feel it is more like being invited to someone's private dining room, quaint and small.The staff together with the owner go the extra mile.

This very small Chinese restaurant has a good reputation in this area. So much so that a taxi driver from Chichester, 6 miles away, told me he makes the effort to come here rather than to a restaurant in Chichester. It has the usual comprehensive menu and is a small place but what struck me most was the very good service. Couldn't fault it, everything was noted and dealt with straight away and they take the trouble to ask you things such as whether you prefer a bowl or a plate and cutlery or chopsticks. My daughter requested both as she wanted to experiment and it was no trouble. Equally since she is vegan the menu presented no problem and they were able to tailor things such as fried rice with no egg. It's a popular place and you have to book but well worth it.
